Its' not easy to make people laugh: Shiv Pandit

0

Actor Shiv Pandit, who is trying his luck in comedy for the first time with "Solid Patels", says it's not easy to make people laugh.

"I am doing comedy for the first time and it's a very difficult and the toughest genre," Shiv Pandit told IANS.

"I feel it's not easy to make people laugh on-screen. Most of the comedy films have adult humour in it but this film is a clean family film. Even kids will enjoy this film as it's for the family audience," he added.

"Solid Patels" is directed by Saurabh Varma and is produced by Krian Media. The film also features Shazahn Padamsee, Ali Asgar and Kettan Singh amongst others.

Ask Shiv if he is also ready to do adult comedies and he said: "It all depends on the script and the content of the film. If I feel I can justify the character and the script of the film then why not. I will definitely do it."

'Film composers should be analytical about audience'

Debutant music composer Varshan says it's easy being an independent music artist but when it comes to composing tunes for films, one has to be wary about the pulse of the audience.

Varshan is making his debut with upcoming Tamil film "Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai".

"It was very exciting for me to work under a director for the first time. It's very easy to be an independent music composer. But when it comes to film music, a music director should be analytical about audiences. 'Purampokku...' transformed me from a composer to an entertainer," Varshan said in a statement.

"The film's title captured the attention of all. It became a challenge for me to run on par with the film's expectation. Yet it is a golden opportunity for a debutant to work in a multi-starrer film," he said.

The film, directed by S.P. Jhananathan, stars Vijay Sethupathi, Shaam, Arya and Karthika Nair in lead roles.

"I am basically a music instrumentation graduate from Trinity College of London. And, later pursued Indian music from Chennai Music College. Jhananathan sir liked my scratch tracks and gave me this opportunity to work.

"I have composed five songs in the film. All the more I was very conscious that my composition should complement Jhananathan sir's script," he said.

The film, produced by UTV Motion Pictures, is slated for release on May 1.

RGV's next on the killer of Veerappan

0

Maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, known for path-breaking films such as "Sarkar" and "Rakht Charitra", will next make a movie titled "Killing Veerappan" on the man who gunned down the dreaded smuggler.

A multi-lingual project, "Killing Veerappan" will be made in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi.

"I've always been fascinated by the story of Veerappan, and have been waiting to make a film on his life. Finally, I've got the perfect script that'll do justice to his story," Varma told IANS.

Kannada superstar Shivrajkumar has been roped in to play the killer of Veerappan, while RGV is yet to cast someone to play Veerappan.

"My story will not focus on Veerappan, but on the man who killed him. I've cast Shivrajkumar for a particular reason. Veerappan had kidnapped legendary actor Rajkumar many years ago, and now I'm giving his real-life son, Shivrajkumar, an opportunity to take reel revenge on the villain," he said.

Veerappan, one of the most wanted of Indian bandits, ruled the forests of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for several decades, smuggling tonnes of sandalwood. He was gunned down by the police in 2004.

"The governments of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka had spent hundreds of crores for his capture. Thousands of police personnel were on his trail for years. But only one man could kill him. My story will focus on that one individual," he said.

According to RGV, there was nobody else more dangerous than Veerappan.

"I can't find anybody more dreaded and dangerous than Veerappan. He was more cunning, ruthless and barbaric than Osama Bin Laden. Agreed Osama may have had bigger network and was working on an international scale, but he wasn't more dangerous than Veerappan, who, according to me, is the most dangerous villain ever," he added.

RGV, who is busy writing the film, will officially launch it by the end of this month or next.

"I'm almost done writing. I've been watching all films, videos and documentaries available on Veerappan. My story will be narrated from a different perspective as I have found new information from different sources."

"We are waiting for Shivrajkumar to be relieved of his current commitments. If all goes well, we might launch the film this month or in early May," he said, and added that other cast members are yet to be finalised.

When asked about whom he will cast in the role of Veerappan, Varma said it will be a surprise and that he wants to keep the identity of the actor a secret for now.

Bollywood's eternal romance with Kashmir lives on

0
0

Bollywood's romance with Kashmir that began in the 1960s and blossomed in the 1970s and 1980s, was interrupted for over two decades by violence that plagued the Valley. Bollywood then shifted its outdoor shoots to Europe and America. As violence began waning, Bollywood like a smitten lover, rebounded to its old love.

To encourage Bollywood's return to the Valley, the state government has been extending all possible help to film units during their stay here.

"We are hopeful of more and more B-town biggies to the Valley as we welcome them with open arms. We are the most affordable place in the world with most beautiful locations," Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director and Director Tourism Farooq Ahmad Shah told IANS.

Hoteliers, too, are more than happy.

"We hosted many film units in our hotel, we want to serve them as better as we can, we want the message of peace and beauty to go out, so that more and more people come here," Asif Burza of Pine and Peak Hotel in Pahalgam told IANS.

It was at this hotel that Yash Chopra and his star cast for "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" stayed while shooting for the film.

Addressing an election rally last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also echoed the need for Bollywood to return to Kashmir for the benefit of both.

"I have to bring back Bollywood to Kashmir," Modi told the rally, adding, "I have to bring back tourism to the state and I have to make Jammu and Kashmir the ultimate tourist destination in the world."

Leading the legion of Bollywood's eternal love for the breathtaking locales of Kashmir are the present-day heart throbs of the celluloid world - Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor and others.

"Jab Tak Hai Jaan", "Rockstar", "Student of the Year", "Yeh Jawani Hai Dewani" and "Haider" are Bollywood's assertions that nothing can keep it away from Kashmir's meadows, mountains, lakes and streams that continue to serve as mesmerizing backdrops to the movies shot in the Valley of Flowers.

"Kashmir is a beautiful place. If one sets up camera anywhere in Kashmir he will be able to appreciate its beauty. We will all cherish the hospitality and facilities we got here," said Shah Rukh Khan, during his extensive shoot for "Jab Tak Hai Jaan".

Personally also, Kashmir has worked wonders for Shah Rukh. While shooting for "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" in Pahalgam, he had told IANS that he assigned a ringtone to his mobile phone after years because his nerves had been soothed by the magic that Kashmir holds for everybody.

After the unprecedented floods hit Kashmir last September, film shoots scheduled for autumn in the Valley had to be cancelled, triggering uncertainty about the resumption of schedules here.

The first Bollywood unit to return to the Valley after the floods was that of "Fitoor".

"Fitoor" was scheduled to be filmed in the Valley "but the floods intervened. The unit then planned to go to Poland. We requested them not to cancel their Kashmir schedule and they agreed after being assured that things had settled down here", Khawer Jamsheed, a line producer in the Valley, told IANS.

"After Rekha, Katrina and Aditiya Roy Kapoor came here to shoot for 'Fitoor' a message of normalcy went out. Shortly afterwards, Yami Gautam and Pulkit Samrat came here to shoot 'Jononiyat'," said Jamsheed, who is now awaiting star-studded "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" with Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Nawazudin Siddique.

The unit arrives here later this month.

"Many producers have contacted me for their shoots in the Valley. I conveyed it to everyone that it is quite peaceful here and anyone can come here," Jamsheed added.

Trying to emerge from the nightmare of last year's floods, Kashmir is eagerly looking forward to rekindle the magic and beauty of Bollywood, for which Kashmir and its people have always been brand ambassadors.

Master class on screen-writing held in Mumbai

0

A master class on screen-writing was held here as a curtain-raiser to the inaugural edition of Drishyam Sundance Screenwriters' Lab 2015 -- a collaboration of Manish Mundra and Sundance Institute.

The event on Saturday was attended by seven creative advisers of the lab: Srdan Golubovic (‘Circles’), Erik Jendresen (‘Band of Brothers’), Rose Troche (‘The Safety of Objects’), Habib Faisal (‘Do Dooni Char’), Sriram Raghavan (‘Badlapur’), Shridhar Raghavan (Yennai Arindaal) and Kasi Lemmons (‘Eve's Bayou’).

Inaugurating the master class, Srinivasan Narayanan, who is leading the lab in India, said: "The lab is an opportunity for independent screen-writers to get specific feedback on their scripts and move it one step ahead in its journey to being made into a film."

Paul Federbush, International Director of the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program, who joined the gathering later said: “The Master Class was a huge success and we are hoping to have a wonderful Screenwriting Lab in Goa.”

The Master Class was moderated by Jendresen, who started the discussion by speaking about his own experiences of writing a script and inviting the other advisers to share their respective processes.

"We have an edge over other formats because here audiences take a break to get their popcorn. So we have two three-act structures to play with, one before the interval and one after it. I enjoy the thrill this provides of being able to build a three-act structure to a cliff-hanger, leave the audience waiting and then get into another three-act structure to complete the story,” Faisal said.

Pointing to films like “The Lunchbox” and “Court”, Golubovic said Indian cinema is at an exciting and dynamic stage, which young writers can tap into.

Raghavan shared an anecdote about the time he narrated the script of his film “Johnny Gaddar” to a filmmaker friend. "He said something I will always remember: 'The plot has no life and life has no plot'. I rewrote the script keeping this in mind and the result is out there for everyone to see."

While Troche compared a good script to a delicious meal a writer offers to an actor, Golubovic broke it down into two basic components: precise structuring and intuition. "It is more important what your characters do not say than what they end up saying," he said, stressing on the importance of sub-texts in a story.

Troche, calling the industry gender-biased, encouraged women screen-writers and directors to be confident about their work and not be swayed by the suggestions doled out by male technicians.

Repeal Article 370, build Smart City for Pandits: Anupam Kher

0
0

Veteran actor Anupam Kher on Sunday said Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees special status to Jammu and Kashmir, should be repealed and a Smart City should be built in the Kashmir Valley for the displaced Pandit community.

In an interaction with the media organised by Roots In Kashmir, Kher, a Kashmiri Pandit himself, said: "Personally, I feel that Article 370 should be abolished."

Arguing that Pandits can't return to their colonies where they once lived because most of the properties have either been burnt down or occupied, Kher urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to construct a new Smart City for the Pandits.

"It is more important today that the Pandits feel secure when they return to the valley and this is possible only when they live together as a cohesive unit in one township," said Kher.

"I request the (central) government to consider building this township as a Smart City. Some of the country's best doctors, educationists and IT professionals come from the Pandit community."

"If the township is developed into a Smart City, it will benefit the entire Kashmir Valley," he said.

Kher ondemned separatists as well as political parties of Kashmir for spreading falsehoods about the resettlement of Kashmiri Pandits.

"Kashmiri Pandits are free citizens of India and they should decide how and where they want to live. Nobody should dictate terms to us, least of all the separatists and terrorists who were responsible for our exodus."

'Let people decide on compulsory screening of Marathi movies'

0
0

Veteran actor Anupam Kher on Sunday said the people of Maharashtra should decide whether screening of Marathi movies in the state should be made compulsory.

"I think it (matter) should be left to the public to decide," Kher said here on the sidelines of a media interaction organised by Roots In Kashmir.

Noting that regional cinema -- especially Marathi films -- was doing well in the country, Kher said it should be supported.

"Marathi cinema is doing very well. I believe the regional cinema should also be supported. Some sort of preference should be given to regional cinema and Bollywood alone should not represent India," he said.

The Maharashtra government announced on April 7 that it was considering making screening of Marathi films compulsory in multiplexes in the state during peak hours.

However, two days later, the government relaxed the norms after drawing flak from several quarters and declared that Marathi movies can be screened between 12 noon and 9 p.m., instead of the earlier stipulated 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tamil actor Parthiban is set to dub in his own voice in his Kannada debut film "Dada Is Back". The film's director Santosh says the senior actor has been learning the language since the beginning of the film.

"He was learning the language from the day he joined us on sets. He must've watched over a dozen Kannada movies and also bought a dictionary with Kannada to English translation. He wrote all his dialogues in Tamil, practiced them and delivered flawlessly," Santosh told IANS.

The film, which is nearly sixty percent complete, will resume shooting from Wednesday.

"With just a week of shoot left, we should wrap up by this month end or early next month. We also have to shoot some fight sequences and a few songs," he said.

Directing child actor in 'Budugu' was challenging: Manmohan

0
0

Directing a nine-year-old, who plays the lead in forthcoming Telugu psychological horror-thriller "Budugu", was a challenge for Manmohan.

"The film is based on real events. It's about a kid with abnormal behavioural tendencies and his family. Prem, a child actor, plays the lead. To bring out the required behaviour from him on screen was extremely challenging," Manmohan told IANS.

"It was more challenging because the story is inspired from the life of my friend's child. I spent a lot of time with the real child to understand what he was going through. So I wanted Prem to bring out exactly what I saw in my friend's child," he said.

"Budugu" releases in cinemas on Friday.

Manmohan wrote the script based on months of investigation on the case. He says it's a shocking story that has been adapted to the commercial format.

"The child, who's sent to a boarding school, is subsequently removed and sent back home because of his abnormal behaviour. I was intrigued by the real story and decided to make it into a film with a happy ending," he said.

"The film will create awareness on parenting kids with such a typical behaviour. There's a purpose why I chose this story and that it was not just for commercial reasons," he added.

Before adapting the story for the big screen, Manmohan also discussed it with the child's family and a group of psychiatrists.

"The real kid is in Class 10 today. He's living a normal life. It's very important that my film doesn't affect his present state. Hence, I discussed with his family and a few psychiatrists to understand how much about his life was allowed to be adapted," he said.

"In order to appeal to the audience, we took some leeway and tossed in some horror element. Otherwise, people would get bored. Such compromises are inevitable when you're adapting real life stories."

"We've used about ten minutes of visual effects in the film, which features Sridhar Rao and Lakshmi Manchu in important roles," he added.

Heaping praise on actress Manchu, he said: "We had approached many artistes for the role of the mother, but nobody was interested. Finally, I felt Lakshmi would be perfect for the role. She immediately agreed to be part of the project and didn't have any qualms of playing a mother."

Born and raised in places outside India, actresses such as Amy Jackson, Nora Fatehi and Scarlett Wilson have crossed over continents to entertain audiences in southern filmdom where they've made a big splash and have won over fans.

British model and actress Amy Jackson made her acting debut in 2010 Tamil drama "Madraspattinam".

Two years later, she made her Hindi debut in Gautham Vasudev Menon-directed "Ek Deewana Tha", and subsequently worked in Tamil and Telugu films such as "Thaandavam" and "Yevadua, respectively.

In the last 12 months, since the release of Vikram-starrer "I", Amy has signed two new Tamil projects and is expected to soon sign a Telugu project as well.

Filmmaker Shankar's magnum opus "I" was the game changer for Amy.

"I had cast Amy because she was perfect for the role of an international super model," Shankar had told IANS of the actress, who also has Akshay Kumar's "Singh Is Bling" in her kitty.

Morocco-based actress Norah Fatehi made her acting debut in 2013 Hindi film "Roar".

Earlier this year, she grooved to an item number in Junior NTR-starrer Telugu actioner "Temper"; and in the last few weeks, Nora has been signed on for two Telugu biggies "Baahubali" and "Kick 2".

"Impressed with her work in 'Temper', Rajamouli had roped her in for a seductive special number in 'Baahubali'," a source from the film's unit had told IANS.

In the song, Nora shared the screen space with another foreign actress Scarlett Wilson.

Scarlett, a British model, was introduced to Telugu filmdom by filmmaker Puri Jagannadh in his film "Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu". She did a cameo in the movie.

Since then, she has mostly featured in special appearances and item numbers in southern projects such as "Prem Adda", "Samar", "Chandee", "Yevadu" and "Jillaa.

Australian beauty Amanda is ready to make her Tamil debut with upcoming film "Saahasam", starring actor Prashanth.

"She has already shot for 40 days for the film. We've kept her identity a secret all these days as we wanted to reveal it at the right time, which is now. We didn't just import a foreign actress. We chose Amanda because her looks suit the character," the film's producer Thiagarajan told IANS.

Amanda was born in London to an English father and Indian mother.

In upcoming Tamil film "Aagam", French actress Aliona Munteanu has been roped in for a crucial role.

"The film's story is about corporate scams. Aliona will be playing a corporate agent from abroad. She will join the sets on April 17," the film's director Vijay Anand told IANS.
