'S/O Satyamurthy' an ode to fathers: Trivikram

Filmmaker Trivikram says his forthcoming Telugu release "S/O Satyamurthy" is an ode to every father.

"There are more films that have dramatised relationship with mothers. Many of us completely ignore the role of the father in our lives. For most youngsters, their fathers are their superheroes. But it isn't the same when they grow up," Trivikram told IANS.

"Quite late in our lives, we realise the importance of father. In some cases, by the time one realises the role of his father, it's too late. Through this film, we want to say loving your father for a few years doesn't count and he should be loved forever," he said.

Starring Allu Arjun, Nitya Menon, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Adah Sharma in the lead roles, "S/O Satyamurthy" is the second time Arjun and Trivikram have collaborated after "Julayi". The film will release on Friday.

Double dhamaka for Adah Sharma

Actress Adah Sharma is excited since for the second time in her career two of her forthcoming films - "Son of Satyamurthy" (SOS) and "Rana Vikrama" - are releasing around the same time.

While "Son of Satyamurthy" releases on Thursday, "Rana Vikrama" will hit the screens on Friday.

"Both the films are important to me as they're releasing in the same week. Last year, it was 'Hasee Toh Phasee' and 'Heart Attack', and this time it's 'S/O Satyamurthy' and 'Rana Vikrama', which happens to be my Kannada debut," Adah told IANS.

Pointing out that both the films are commercial entertainers, she said: "In Telugu, I've already been accepted, thanks to 'Heart Attack'. But I've tried something different in 'SOS'. Hopefully, they'll like me in this role as well. In Kannada, it will be my acid test as I'll be facing new audience. I hope they accept me with opens arms".

This is the first time Adah has teamed up with actor Arjun and director Trivikram for film "Son of Satyamurthy". And she terms working with them as a learning experience.

"There's so much to learn when you work with people like Arjun and Trivikram. Both have been on my list of people I've always wished to work with in Telugu industry. It was so much fun with them on the sets," she said.

"I've been a fan of Arjun's work. He's a great dancer. What really mattered to me was being part of a project featuring Trivikram and Arjun because it's not every day you get such big projects," she added.

Quiz Adah if she was nervous about working with Arjun or Trivikram, and pat comes the reply: "I don't get nervous about these things. I was very happy. I get nervous only when I'm unprepared. I'm not the kind of person who thinks whether I should do this or not. People think when you work with the likes of Trivikram, you bear more responsibility. But I seriously don't feel that way".

"I enjoy what I do and that's why it's so much fun. If I start thinking about the burden and responsibility, then I have to worry about proving and it will only mess things up," she said.

"Son of Satyamurthy" also features Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nitya Menon in leading roles. Although Adah didn't have any scenes with Nitya, she enjoyed working with Samantha as she got to learn from her.

In "Rana Vikrama", she's paired with Kannada superstar Puneeth Rajkumar.

"I'm quite excited about the film. I'm eager to know how audiences will receive me. Nowadays everything rests in the hands of the viewers because they are more intelligent and know what to reject and what not," she said, and added her portion in the film is set against a college backdrop.

Adah and Puneeth will also be seen in a never-seen-before fantasy song.

"There's something very imaginative about the song. I'm sure audiences will love it," she said.

Actress Amyra Dastur says she was sceptical before saying yes to her forthcoming film "Mr. X" opposite Emraan Hashmi because of his bold image.

"I was a little apprehensive and sceptical initially to work with Emraan. However, Vikram Bhatt (film's director) made it very clear that its an unusual film and a U/A certificate kind of film. I was fine with it then,” Amyra told IANS.

The actress added that Emraan helped break the ice on the sets.

“Vikram made me feel very comfortable and after reading the script there was no looking back. Emraan is a wonderful co-star with a great sense of humour and he made me feel very comfortable," she said.

The film features Emraan as an invisible guy, who seeks revenge for all the wrongs done to him. The film is slated for an April 17 release.

The 21-year-old, who ventured into Hindi cinema in Manish Tiwary's "Issaq" alongside Prateik Babbar, emphasises that it's a “family" entertainer.

"It's a proper U/A film as there are just two kisses in it. It's a family film. People do kiss and I think its time Indian audience accept it," she said.

Demand to ban 'Nanak Shah Fakir' plain politics: Producer

$

Amid the demand to ban the film "Nanak Shah Fakir" -- a biopic on Guru Nanak -- its producer Harinder Singh Sikka says the whole episode is driven by some political agenda.

Radical Sikh group Dal Khalsa on Wednesday asked Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to intervene and stop the release of the film, which is slated to hit the screens on April 17.

"Our film, 'Nanak Shah Fakir' was ready much before the release of 'Chaar Sahibzaade'. Of course we added many scenes later and re-edited the film as well. I showed the film to all members of Darbar Sahib and received written support from them before bringing it to public domain.

"What is happening now is plain politics and pressure tactics by fringe elements who were also against the release of 'Chaar Sahibzaade'," Sikka said in a statement.

Directed by Harry Baweja, "Chaar Sahibzaade" was a 2014 animated historical film on the sacrifices of the sons of the 10th guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh.

Talking about the issue, Sikka added: "It is therefore sad that select people wish to make his teachings as an intellectual property or play politics even if some one is trying to spread his message selflessly".

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the mini-parliament of Sikh religious affairs, has also objected to the release of the film, saying that it is an assault on the fundamental tenets of the Sikh religion.

“Nanak Shah Fakir”, which is based on the life and teachings of the first Sikh guru, garnered a lot of appreciation at the Cannes Film Festival and the Sikh Film Festivals at Toronto and Los Angeles.

However, Sikka also says that some people want to make Guru Nanak's teachings as an “intellectual property” and are trying to “play politics” with it.

He added that the money made by the film will be used for the good of society.

"It is pertinent to mention that no income from this pious project shall come to our house. It shall but be used as a seva for sarvdharm (as is done in Guru ka langar). I would not like to comment on why is this select group changing it's mind, especially when I have received tremendous support from all quarters, both within and across the globe”," he added.

This kind of demand is not new as the SGPC sought a ban on films like "Son of Sardaar", "Jo Bole So Nihaal" and most recently "MSG: The Messenger".

Meanwhile, the film's music was launched in the capital on Tuesday by Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman and veteran vocalist Pandit Jasraj.

Designing for 'Gun Pe Done' was challenging: Chandni Sahu

Designer Chandni Sahu, who has designed costumes for the film “Gun Pe Done”, revisited the period of veteran actor Feroz Khan to get the perfect look. She says bringing out the style of the era was challenging.

"In 'Gun Pe Done', turning Jimmy Shergill into Feroz Khan sahab was the biggest challenge for me. He is commercial and an intense actor, so creating western genre star in tech world is risky and challenging," Chandni told IANS.

She further added, "Abhik Bhanu (film's director) told me that he wanted Jimmy in western cowboy persona. And who else has epitomised cowboy than legendary Feroz Khan. I had to keep in mind today's style also, so that people identify with him."

Cowboy hats, bell bottoms and black leather bands were apt choices according to the script and budget.

“You can see the cowboy boots, bell bottoms, black coloured leather bands in accessories or the dog tags, necklaces he has worn on his neck. We wanted a swagger with a waistcoat, which is classic western look,” she said.

Asked what about other cast members like Vijay Raaz and Sanjay Mishra, she said: "There was no reference point for Vijay so I travelled to a lot of places like Mohammad Ali Road, Bhindi Bazaar and even Chandni Chowk."

For Sanjay, Chandni “wanted him to look, act and behave like a local liquor mafia with a modern twist”.

“So we gave him hoodie with a dhoti, which is fusion, thus making it an interesting look," she said.

The film is produced by Asif Kazi and Manoj Menon under the banner Pioneer Films and Entertainment LLP.

A video titled "Choose Beautiful" to encourage and inspire women worldwide by persuading them to reconsider the choices they make about their beauty was launched by global beauty brand Dove.

The brand launched the candid, eye-opening short film, shot in five countries across the globe, on video-sharing website YouTube on Tuesday, read a statement.

The video captures real women of San Francisco, Shanghai, Delhi, London and São Paulo considering their own beauty.

The women made a choice about the way they see themselves -- 'average' versus the frequently avoided, 'beautiful'. The film reveals that women often struggle with recognising their own beauty.

"While we were filming, it was so clear that the women who chose to feel beautiful shined with a positive, empowered outlook. We all have the personal and powerful ability to rise above others' points of view, social media and pop culture.

"I hope the film inspires women around the world to reconsider how they view their own beauty," Paul Dektor, the film's director, said in a statement.

'Broken Horses' - Intelligently tamed (IANS Movie Review- Rating: ***1/2)

Film: "Broken Horses"; Cast: Christopher George Marquetter, Anton Yelchin, Vincent D'Onofrio, Maria Valverde, Seean Patrick Flanery, Jordi Caballero, Thomas Jane, Henry Shotwell; Director: Vidhu Vinod Chopra; Rating: ***1/2

Vidhu Vinod Chopra's English Film "Broken Horses" is a different, yet emotionally packed take on the American Wild West, set somewhere near the Mexican border.

With heavy doses of bromance, the tale delves on the bond between two orphaned brothers. It explores their sensitive and caring nature towards each other.

Narrated in a linear fashion, it is the story of Buddy Heckum, a sensitively hooked slow learner, his musically inclined younger brother Jacob Heckum, who is also known as Jackey, and a conniving gangster Julius Hench, who in order to safeguard his own interests tries to separate the two brothers. This forms the crux of the tale.

Fifteen years ago after the death of their father Gabriel Heckum, the Sheriff of this border town, the boys are left to fend for themselves. Julius takes Buddy under his wings and instigates him with, "There are lots of bad people out there, somebody got to stop them... Miguel Stanton killed your dad and you cannot let him get away. You kill him."

Buddy takes revenge. This "job" was his initiation into the crime world. And in order to protect Jackey from his world of crime, the ever caring older brother packs him off to New York to let him pursue his dream of becoming a violinist.

Years later, Jackey plans to get married and settle down with Vittoria (Maria Valverde).

Buddy insists that Jackey return home to have a look at the surprise wedding gift he has in store for them. The gift was "a promise he had made".

Jackey obliges. It is then, when he is in his hometown, that Jackey learns about Julius' sinister plan and the film garners momentum.

"Broken Horses" is Christopher G. Marquette's turf. He engages you as Buddy and gets you hooked. He alternates between a simpleton and a pigheaded revenge-seeking mercenary hitman with equal ease and grace.

Anton Yelchin as his younger brother is sincere. The fear and concern for his brother is palpable on screen.

Of the rest of the cast, Sean Patrick Flanery as Jackey's music teacher, with his amputated legs is a bit dramatic and unconvincing. Maria Valverde as Vittoria, the only woman in the male bastion to have some credible screen moments, is functional.

There are some subtle emotional moments between Buddy and her which are touching. Vincent D'Onofirio as the sweet talking, pyrophobic villain is not at all menacing.

With not enough weightage given to the sub-plots, the overall piling of the plot seems superficial and shallow, especially the passage when Jackey goes to interview Mario Garza, the rival gangster. Also, the metaphor used in that scene is trite and oft seen in gangster films.

Though this is an original story by Vinod Vidhu Chopra, "Broken Horses" finds its genesis in numerous older films, which includes Chopra's earlier film "Parinda." But what makes it stand apart is its treatment.

The intelligently written screenplay and dialogues, especially the summation of the title of the film, by Chopra and Abhijat Joshi, more than make up for the deficit in the design scheme.

Tom Stern's camera work is excellent. He has a flare for wide angled panoramic shots. Some of the shots of the Wild West and Jackey's Ranch, captured in the twilight zone are worth noticing. So is the underwater shot during the climax.

Well mounted with good production and technical values, the film has an inexplicable gentleness to the narration, very characteristic of Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It will appeal to the emotionally inclined.

With 13 films, mostly shorts, delving on the subject of how adventure freaks come over odds, the Banff Mountain Film Festival, presented by Columbia Sportswear, aims to inculcate among Indians a culture of going outdoors.

A day long fest, it has already travelled to Surat and Mumbai, and will be heading to Pune (April 12), Delhi (April 17), Vadodara (April 26), Nasik (May 12), Leh (Septemeber 6). The dates for Bengaluru, Mussoorie, and Kolkata are being finalised.

"These are short films ranging from a few minutes to about half hour...some of them are special edits only for the festival. The films were selected to cater to a wide audience, cover different adventure activities and inspire the audience to take to a life of adventure," Divyesh Muni, secretary of the Himalayan Club, the organisers, told IANS.

The Himalayan Club has been screening the Banff Festival in India since 2001. Till last year, screenings were done only in Mumbai and occasionally in Delhi, but this year they are going all out for a multi-city tour.

While activities covered in films at the festival range from rock climbing, parasailing, skiing, mountain biking, ice climbing and trail running, one such movie is on Vasu Sojitra, an adaptive skier who overcame the odds despite an amputated leg.

"It is an inspirational film that showcases how one can overcome a tragedy," said Khyati V. Bhinde, vice president, Chogori India Retail Ltd., Columbia.

"We are here to inculcate a culture of going outdoors. We believe in the real outdoors and want people to move away from the mundane, explore nature and experience the joys that it has to offer," added Bhinde, who believes that "adventure tourism has seen a sharp rise across the country".

"We see a paradigm shift where people are taking to the outdoors even on weekends and during short breaks. The Banff Festival showcases and celebrates the achievements of great adventurers to inspire people to keep trying but we urge people to do so responsibly and under appropriate supervision and guidance from experts using the right gear," she said.

'Dharam Sankat Mein' - Oh My God, Paresh plays non-believer again (IANS Movie Review - Rating: ***)

$
0
0

Film: "Dharam Sankat Mein"; Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Annu Kapoor ; Director: Fuwad Khan; Rating: ***

Making a film mocking the sacred cows isn't easy in this country where every artiste stumbles on a sensitive organisation, green saffron or yellow, every step along his way.

The makers of "Dharam Sankat Mein"(DSM) must be applauded for going where angels and agnostics fear to tread.

Of course, Raj Kumar Hirani's "PK" did it recently, how can we forget? And before that Umesh Shukla's "Oh My God" (OMG). Much of Rawal's performance in his new religious satire is a repeat of what he has already done in OMG.

Now there is the added responsibility and burden of representing the BJP. Rawal takes on the tricky task of being both non-religious and finally hugely respectful towards all religions.

To make his pro-government stand even more cogent, the film is shot in and around Ahmedabad in the lives and colonies of Gujarati families. This gives the narrative a quaint and comfortable lived-in structure even when the dialogues raise thorny issues on the Great Religious Divide.

The film outwardly seems to scoff at ritualistic religion. The script, derived from Josh Apignanesi's "The Infidel" turns the satire on anti-Semitism to a pro-Islamic statement. The very idea of talking religion so openly on screen seems audacious enough.

There are scenes in the early part of the film where Rawal's Gujarati Hindu character scuffles verbally with his Muslim neighbour, played with emphatic elan by Annu Kapoor. These scenes are the backbone of the film. The dialogues penetrate sacrosanct spaces occupied by both the religious orders, offending both and thereby hurting none, so to speak.

Hats off the Rawal and Kapoor and the dialogue writers (Alpesh Dixit, Sanjay Sharma, Vijay Desai) for the absorbing lines shared by the two characters.

Pithy' the words are lost in contrived translation. In trying to be faithful to the original material, "Dharam Sanket Mein" ends up being a bit of a botch and a whole lot of hash. The twist when Rawal's wife suspects him of having a homosexual affair with his neighbour fitted in well into the original. Here it looks forced and embarrassing.

"Tumhe kya lagta hai main gay hoon? Main bilkul straight hoon," Rawal chuckles to his screen wife, making you wish he was gay after all...Perhaps the tedium of tirelessly lampooning ritualistic religion would have broken.

The film's main dramatic core when Rawal discovers his Islamic parentage is squandered in trying to be sassy and funny. Throughout the film while Rawal discovers his religious identity, audiences become more and more confused about their own religious allegiances.

Adding to the identity crisis are the songs. Punjabi star Gippy Singh shows up dancing to Bhangra beat whose significance is as hard to decode as the reason why Naseer would take up a role so ridiculously over-blown.

Naseeruddin Shah as the Hindu godman Neel Anand Baba is quite evidently modeled on a certain self-styled rock-star guru. Naseer seems to have a lot of fun chanting the cheesy lines and being extra-friendly with female devotees. The fun, alas, never filters down to the audience.

There is an inherent dryness to the drama that is hard to ignore. And even harder to digest. As the screenplay serenades a stupendous surfeit of absurdities, you are left counting the blessings inherent in the theme of infidelity.

It gives filmmakers the freedom to think out of the box. Though how far that freedom is taken is entirely a matter of individual vision.

"Dharam Sankat Mein" has some lucid moments of self-questioning where the religious divide is pungently scrutinized and satirized. Hilarity at the cost of organised religion is not an easy target to achieve for any filmmaker.

This films achieves a remarkable threshold of thoughtful humour. Though a lot of it is gradually eroded by over-punctuated satire, this is that rare film which takes potshots at the religious divide without offending anyone.

'Ek Paheli Leela': A voluptuous fairy tale (IANS Hindi Film Review)

0

Film: "Ek Paheli Leela"; Cast: Sunny Leone,Mohit Ahlawat, Rajniesh Duggal, Jay Bhanushali, Rahul Dev; Director: Bobby Ahmed ; Rating: *** 1/2 (3 and a half stars)

It is interesting to see Sunny Leone's name as a solo credit during the titles while the names of her male co-stars are bunched together.

Yup, the Hindi film heroine has come of age. How much so, is apparent when we see Sunny Leone, the brunt of so many giggly jokes just two years, take centre-stage in this surprisingly engagement and yummy yarn about a sexy British-Indian model who in her previous life was a sexy Rajasthani chokri whom the local sculptor lusted after.

Amusingly Ms Leone flashes more of her ample cleavage 300 years earlier in the pre-incarnation flashback than she does in the present. The very fetching Ms Leone's skin-show, done in temperate measures, provides an apt sense of continuity to a plot that is partially inspired by Shakti Samanta's "Mehbooba". The hummable Amaal Malik track "Tere bin nahin laage" is used to nudge Sunny Leone's memory awake in much the same way that the haunting R.D. Burman track "Mere naina saawan bhadon" was used in "Mehbooba" to refurbish Hema Malini's memory.

Either way Ms Leone just can't stop taking a stroll down mammary, sorry, memory lane.

"Ek Paheli Leela" is a voluptuous feast for the eyes, and I am not only referring to the film's heroine who is supremely confident in her skin. It's the aura of the film. The images splashed across the frames to represent two differences eras, are done in tastefully flamboyant colours that seem to pay a homage to the flamboyant aesthetics of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

And just to get the Bhansali image out in the open, director Bobby Khan uses the very perky "Dholi taro dhol baaje" from "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" to spice up the proceedings.

In all honesty, just like one part of our heroine's anatomy, the audiences' interest level is never allowed to sag. The plot moves through two completely antithetical eras with surefooted steps, making sure that none of the characters trip over in their enthusiasm to inject a freneticness into the plot.

And for once, the songs do not brake the proceedings. They carpet the narrative forming an attractive tapestry of love and betrayal, as Ms Leone moves from playing Mira in London to Leela in Rajasthan.

Stunningly mounted and sumptuously narrated, "Ek Paheli Leela" is a feast for the senses. Basha Lal's camera caresses Ms Leone's assets and the sand dunes of Jaisalmer with equal affection.

Though the luscious Ms Leone dazzles in her double avatar, the question is, can she act? Well, dear friends, while the jury is still out on that one, let's just say this. Could Zeenat Aman act? Like the sex bomb of the yesteryears, Sunny Leone fills up the screen with her voluptuous presence. Curiously she looks different not only in her two avatars but also from one frame to another.

Happily her male co-stars are also largely competent. Rajniesh Duggal (his eyes exuding the innocence and adoration of Rishi Kapoor) and Rahul Dev provide powerful support. And yes, it's good to see Mohit Ahlawat return to the screen with a quiet controlled and thoughtful performance.

Jas Arora's hamming gets annoying. And the gay comic jokes featuring the veejay Andy suck. These could have easily been avoided. This film with its disarming mood of a fairtytale didn't need perverse props. It moves forward with confident steps creating a world of unabashed makebelieve.

And yes, the twist in the climax is jolting.

It may not be revolutionary in concept or path-breaking in execution. But make no mistake. "Ek Paheli Leela" is the surprise of the year.
