"My film is in the final stage of scripting. Now we will start with the casting of the film. The movie will go on floors by early 2016. Actress Poonam Pandey, who ventured into tinsel town with the film "Nasha", says she will try to promote "Helen" in the best possible manner because she feels her debut film was not marketed properly.

Poonam's first film "Nasha" which released in 2013 did average business at the box office.

"I was quite upset because 'Nasha' was not promoted well though the movie was good. This time for my film 'Helen', I have spoken to the marketing team to spend a lot on promotional and marketing activity. I will try my best to promote this film in the best possible way," Poonam told IANS.

The 24-year-old previously clarified that the film is not a biopic on yesteryear's dancing diva Helen. According to sources, there is a famous Helen dance number in "Helen", and Poonam has been doing workshops for the same.

"This film is very close to my heart, I am more interested in doing content-driven films and this film has a very strong content. As of now, I am undergoing workshops and trying to learn some dance moves for a song in the film. It has been a tedious journey so far, and we shall start shooting by next month," said the actress, who first grabbed attention when she promised to strip down for the Indian team if they won the World Cup in 2011.

"Helen", directed by Ajit Rajpal, is produced by Sureh Nakum and Vipin Medhekar under the banner of The World Networks.

Bollywood helps push independent projects forward: Singer Papon

0
0

A multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, Assamese artiste Angaraag Mahanta, popular as Papon, is oscillating between his independent music and his career in Bollywood. With focus on both, he says Bollywood acts like a support system for independent artistes like him, and helps them reach a wider audience.

“Bollywood is a very big platform in terms of its reach. The reach of your voice and song is immense. If you are doing something other than film music, then it helps support both. You can carry on both as Bollywood helps you push forward other stuff along with it,” Papon, who is credited for reviving interest in folk music from the North East, told IANS over phone.

Apart from carving a special place in Bollywood with his heartwarming tracks like “Jiyein kyun”, “Kyun”, “Zindagi aisi waisi” and “Kaun mera”, he has been a part of TV show “Coke Studio” that aims at bringing the soulful music of India in the forefront and has also doled out Assamese and Hindi albums.

The singer is optimistic that his success story in the Hindi film industry will make people from North East come forward and try their luck in Mumbai.

The singer opened Rongali, a three-day festival, here on Friday with his band East India Company with a performance high on traditional, electronic and accoustic tunes. The crowd was left asking for more.

Papon says that performing in the state has always been welcoming and overwhelming.

"It has been a comfort zone for me as there is an immediate connect with the audience. I always look forward to coming here and playing in front of the audience,” he said.

Talking about the ongoing cultural gala which aims to boost state's tourism, he said: “It is very early to say what impact will the festival have as it is just a beginning. When people come to this kind of two or three day-festival, then they get a sample of everything -- culture, food, craft and art. I hope the festival gets bigger."

North Easterns have faced racial discrimination in different parts of the country, and people from the region have been fighting to overcome the menace. Papon feels that the prejudice exists in society, but needs to be handled smartly.

“I have never faced racial slurs and even if something came my way, I took it in a light manner. There is a definitely a discriminatory kind of look out towards people from North East.

"I don't know why Bollywood and other drama has always depicted Oriental people from the region. There is that mindset, and I think there is a way to go around it and to deal with it smartly,” the singer said.

Music is often used to address problems of the society, but Papon is quick to note that for him, societal issues generate thoughts rather than inspire his music.

“Burning issues of the society don't inspire my music, but are good for thought about music. Something bad about society is not inspiring. Recently, I have been writing songs on social issues that I think need to be discussed,” Papon said.

Globalisation is one of the topic that has compelled Papon to pen a song about how the “local identity and attributes are fading away with multinational companies” and invading the market.

His song “Moh moh ke dhaage” from movie “Dum Laga Ke Haisha” once again struck an emotional chord. His fans have a reason to rejoice as the singer says that there are “many things lined up” on professional front.

“I am working on a Assamese and Hindi album. There are some Bollywood projects as well. I also want to do some interesting collaboration and an international act. So I'm thinking about a lot of things, but I'm unsure about which way to go,” he said.

Can't wait to hear more of Honey Singh: Pretty Lights

0
0

After ruling the hearts of youngsters throughout the country, rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh has now impressed American electronic music artist Derek Vincent Smith, who performs under the stage name Pretty Lights, on his maiden tour in India. Smith "cannot wait" to listen to more of the rapper's creations after he came across his music on the radio.

Smith's Indian tour, wherein he performed at Le Meridien, Gurgaon on Friday and will play in Pune on Sunday, is part of Vh1 Supersonic Arcade, which provides an experimental music experience to its audience.

He landed in the country not long ago and Smith has already left fans enraptured by his performance on Friday. Although, it was long before he played in Delhi that he'd been acquainted with the "Brown rang" hitmaker's tracks.

"I went out filming and heard an amazing music on the radio and I loved it -- Honey Singh. I loved the beats he put in. Cannot wait to hear more of him," Smith told IANS in an interview.

The 33-year-old music artiste, who has been "dreaming about coming to India for a long time", says he is interested in learning about the current electronic music scene in the country.

"The current beat production scene in Mumbai and all of India is what I am most interested in learning about. And by 'learning about', I mean hearing as much of the music as I can. I have met several cool producers and DJs so far while I've been here and I am getting connected with the music. What I've heard so far has got me really excited," he said.

Smith, along with producer Michal Menert, began working on Pretty Lights in summer 2004 and by the end of 2007, they had started performing for large acts. He says rock band Pink Floyd is his greatest inspiration not only when it comes to music, but also in other spheres of his life.

Being a “vinyl junkie”, Smith has been exposed to “a lot of old Ravi Shankar records” and he has amassed quite a collection of his work which he loves to listen to on original vinyl.

Visiting India Gate and the famous Taj Mahal is on the musician's check list, as is “enjoying Indian delicacies”.

“Michal has been to India a couple of times and he always talked about the beautiful and exotic places around in India. I have read a lot about the country and its heritage. We would like to visit a whole lot of places, from India Gate to Taj Mahal, enjoying Indian delicacies,” he said.

Smith, who hopes to gather a lot of memories by the end of the tour, has a keen ear for Bollywood music and has “developed a wild curiosity” about the music scene in the country.

“I love Bollywood soundtrack music and I love the sitar in general. That probably sounds a bit ignorant, but it's because I am a bit ignorant to the music of India especially the modern music of India.

“In the short time that I've been here, I have developed a wild curiosity about the different types of music that are blossoming and evolving within the Indian music scene today. I can't wait to hear that and be inspired. I can say for sure that I will be on the lookout for this kind of music moving forward," he said.

Pretty Lights will also perform for 'SPIRO' which is a part of MTV Indies on Saturday at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai.

Theatre actor Geetanjali Kulkarni gets 'stamp' for film journey

After almost 20 years in theatre, actress Geetanjali Kulkarni took to the cinematic medium with a key role in "Court", a poignant film which has won the National Award in the best feature film category even before its theatrical release. The wife of actor Atul Kulkarni says it comes as a stamp on her belief in quality storytelling.

The multilingual film, which has dialogues in Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and English to capture the realism of daily humdrum, puts the spotlight on the Indian judicial system through the trial of an ageing folk singer in a lower court in Mumbai.

Directed by Chaitanya Tamhane, the movie, which is releasing on April 17, has won multiple awards and garnered appreciation at film festivals in Vienna, Singapore and Hong Kong, apart from being recently lauded with the National Film Award.

For Geetanjali, 41, it came as a thumbs up to her choice of film for her big debut.

"It was as if my belief in the film and the director had got a stamp. The National Award gave it a stamp, and my faith has been reinstated in the fact that not just one type of storytelling works in India. I can now confidently go with my belief in content," she told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

In the film, the actress plays a middle-aged public prosecutor. Given her theatre experience, Geetanjali undertook research and groundwork, including workshops to perform the role to the best of her capability.

"I did some workshops, and even went and saw court cases, victims and even the accused people for real. I became more sensitive to their issues. My whole perspective on these things changed, and I felt I grew as a person. It was a revelation to go to the courts," she said, and added that "Court" shows a court "realistically".

What took her so long to enter the film world?

"I've done some cameos in Marathi projects, but 'Court' is my first big role. I didn't try much for films or went out of the way to find projects because I was satisfied in theatre," said the actress, who is a National School of Drama alumnus, just like her husband Atul, who is a National Award winning actor.

Will she ever team up with him on screen?

"Well, if somebody approaches us and gives us a chance, why not," she questioned.

He last produced "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" for YRF.

"Aditya is looking into getting some creative producers for his production house as a studio model and is keen to take a step back and focus on his directorials, for which he might not give as much time as he was giving before.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday paid homage to legendary Bengali screen icon Suchitra Sen, a day ahead of her birth anniversary.

Popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg was once again embroiled in controversy here -- this time by wielding a 'gun' during a musical performance, threatening the audience not to leave otherwise he would shoot them.

The singer of 'Ya Ali' fame from "Gangster" movie, was performing at an ongoing three-day cultural and musical extravaganza at the veterinary college ground in Guwahati's Khanapara area on Sunday night.

"I'll sing with this gun now. It's not fake, it's real. Don't go away or I'll shoot you," he said in the middle of his performance while brandishing a pistol in his hand.

Garg held the gun for some time as he resumed singing. Soon police arrived at the event only to find that it was a toy pistol.

"We were informed about the incident last night at the Khanapara play ground. Our personnel frisked the singer but they found only a toy gun with him," said Deputy Commissioner of Guwahati East Police District H.K. Das.

"Zubeen later told us that he came to the programme from a film shoot and he brought the toy gun from the shooting. No case was registered against him as no one had lodged any complaint in this regard," the official added.

Dibakar thrilled with Kolkata's response to '...Byomkesh Bakshy!'

Director Dibakar Banerjee is relieved after receiving a "thrilling response" to his latest directorial "Detective Byomesh Bakshy!", especially in Kolkata.

Initially, Dibakar was scared about how actor Sushant Singh Rajput's interpretation of the detective will be received in the city, where the film's story is set. But the positive response to the movie has left the director in a happy zone.

"We both (Sushant and I) were very scared about what response the film will get in Kolkata? This is because Byomkesh's character is one of the great detectives of Bengali fiction and (we felt) people won't accept Sushant as Byomkesh," Dibakar said on Sunday during the promotion of the film at a theatre here.

"But what we have gathered from there (Kolkata), shows that Sushant has really become Byomkesh for them," he added.

Further, he says Sushant's impersonation of Byomkesh has created a new image of the detective.

"Audiences have a strong impression of Byomkesh Bakshy on their minds as they have been reading about him in books and have watched a TV series on him too... but what I can see now is that after Sushant's portrayal of Byomkesh Bakshy, the audience's impression has changed," the filmmaker said.

Also featuring Swastika Mukherjee, the film, based on Saradindu Bandyopadhyay's fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshy, was released this Friday.
