Budding Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko and four women, arrested for possessing and consuming cocaine, were granted bail by the Kerala High Court on Monday, after spending 59 days in custody.

The bail was granted soon after the Kerala Police filed the chargesheet at a lower court here. The government prosecutor opposed the bail.

While granting bail, the court asked the accused to provide details of their passports and mobile phones besides directing them to report to the police twice a week.

The accused were arrested during a midnight raid in January at a posh flat. Of the four women, one is an assistant director, two others are models and one works in Dubai.

The police later arrested a Nigerian from Goa besides two others.

Chacko began his film career as an assistant director besides playing small roles. In his last release "Ithihasa", he plays the central role.

AIFW 2015 high on design, less on Bollywood drama

A whimsical world of fantasies, silhouttes straight from fairy tales and 25 style gurus coming together to pay an ode to the rich heritage of India at the finale - the 25th edition of Amazon India Fashion Week (AIFW) here laid out bold, edgy, innovative style statements as designers rolled out varied styles in pastel shades of winter. However, the edition witnessed less of Bollywood - which was a good thing.

The fashion extravaganza, which started on March 25 at Pragati Maidan, saw a fitting finale on Sunday - there was music, dance, drama and style with 25 designers like Raghavendra Rathore, Ritu Kumar, Rohit Bal and Sabyasachi Mukherjee splashing colours on the blank canvas with theme 'Crafts of India' to express their interpretation of Indian culture.

The autumn-winter edition was special in many ways - a new title sponsor in Amazon and 25 years in the world of fashion.

Vikas Purohit, head, Amazon Fashion, India, said that the online platform plans to act as a bridge to minimise the communication gap between buyers, sellers and designers.

"The genesis of the event was consumer needs. So we thought what is the best medium to provide service to consumer and designer industry. The association with FDCI is on a larger scale and fashion week is a part of it.

"New talent is provided through fashion week. But then they need a platform to sell and also need data about what is in demand. We aim to bring all those things on table," Purohit told IANS.

FDCI president Sunil Sethi lauded the magnitude of the finale a press briefing, saying: "I salute them. There was no better way for the finale. Even though it was celebration of 25th edition, let's say it was the first edition and look how we celebrated."

Designer Rajesh Pratap Singh set the ball rolling for the fashion event on the opening day with a black-and-white collection injected with bits and pieces from the medical industry like surgical caps and masks. He paid homage to medical practitioners through his line.

Other names who created fashion trends through their collection were Sonam Dubal, Poonam Bhagat, Aneeth Arora, Pia Pauro, Malini Ramani, Rina Dhaka and Samant Chauhan.

While Shraddha Kapoor launched her fashion label 'Imara' on the first day, Sushant Singh Rajput presented an apparel line titled NOIR 43, inspired by his forthcoming crime thriller "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!". Actress Sonal Chauhan added Bollywood quotient when she walked the ramp for designer Nikhita Tandon.

Trends that stood out at this edition were layered clothing, asymmetrical hemlines, flared sleeves, new cuts, slits, capes and utilitarian outfits.

Inspirations were also galore and varied.

Designer duo Hemant and Nandita showcased the timeless allure of the Kashmir's Gulmarg resort through their range that personified undying techniques, embroideries and extravagant handicrafts; while designer trio Viral, Ashish and Vikrant captured the romance between steam punk and military, Aneeth Arora tried to explore how life changes after putting on a uniform with her military-inspired couture.

Designer Anju Modi sketched a world of fantasies with her range 'How to write a fairy tale'; and Dubal became a dream merchant with his 'Dream Sequins' collection.

AIFW is not all about fashion and style, but business as well. The business side was smooth with multiple domestic and international buyers.

Japanese buyer Tomoko, a regular at the fashion gala, said that the event was high on creativity. "I thought that some of the shows showed great progress in terms of creativity," said the fan of Manish Arora's designs.

Designer Gautam Gupta told IANS: "I have queries from Australia and Middle East. I stick to resort wear and bright colours. All those areas and all those countries which have that kind of need, is my target so things are going fine. Australia is the addition and one from Middle East this year. We have been approached by lot of online portals."

Chauhan, who made a white-hued statement with his collection 'Rajputana Kumari', said he concentrated on one destination for his brand.

"We don’t want to sell it to everyone. If you keep switching your sell point, then it confuses the clients. Or if you are selling it at two places, then by the time you go to one place, buyers change their mind and go to some other place. So we have decided to spread ourselves in Kuwait,” he told IANS.

Accessories were also a highlight of the edition with illuminated headgear, elaborate head dress with intricate detailing made of feathers of different colours giving a tribal feel, spectacles, turban, linear headgear and miniature dolls.

FDCI has already announced dates for the next seasons of Amazon India Fashion Week with spring-summer edition scheduled for October 14-18 and autumn-winter from March 16-20 next year.

Not here to preach anything: Paresh Rawal

After starring in a film like "OMG: Oh My God!', which touched upon people's blind faith in god and godmen, Paresh Rawal will now be seen in "Dharam Sankat Mein" as a man in an identity crisis due to his religion. But he says he does not pick such movies to preach anything to anyone.

Asked how such films will make a difference to the society, he said: "I am not here to preach anything. We just want to make good films. The plot of this film is different and I want to do more films which will have different layers in it."

The veteran actor also said the intent is not to "hurt anybody's religious sentiments".

"I want to make a point, but within the boundary," he added.

"Dharam Sankat Mein" revolves around a Hindu man Dharampal (Paresh), who goes through an identity crisis when he discovers he was adopted as a child and born to a Muslim family.

Directed by Fuwad Khan, the film also features Naseeruddin Shah and Annu Kapoor and is slated for release on April 10.

While films based on religious issues have always caught in controversies, Paresh says the audience of today still enjoys their content.

"Certain section of media is interested in contrversies. We can't fight with anyone... we can only make a good film. 'OMG' also worked. Who is the one who watched that film? Aren't they the audience? I think audience is ready for the change," he said.

Arjun's new haircut his saviour from summer heat

Actor Arjun Kapoor's latest mohawk-inspired hairstyle is not for any movie role. He says he wanted a change for the summer season.

“I felt like cutting my hair because summer is here. I was growing my hair out for a bit and I got bored of it... it wasn't any thought out or planned. I just went to get my hair trimmed and I said, 'You know I'm kind of bored and it's going to get hot very soon, so let's get a hair cut',” Arjun told IANS.

The 29-year-old debuted his new hairstyle via a Twitter post.

He was in the capital on Saturday as the brand ambassador of the Earth Hour when he opened up to talk about his unique haircut. The "Ishaqzaade" and "Gunday" star also looked a bit beefed up, and there was also news that it is in preparation for an upcoming film.

Asked about it, he said: “No, it is not for any film as such. It is just a part and parcel of the fact that I have been training for a long time, so I am bound to see more muscularity in my body.”

Arjun, who was last seen sharing the screen with Sonakshi Sinha in “Tevar”, is said to have signed a project with the Yash Raj Films (YRF) banner.

Refusing to divulge details, he said: "They (YRF officials) will announce the film very soon. I feel it's very unfair that an actor announces the film, it should be the producer to announce first, and then I can talk about it. The film will start in the middle of the year,” Arjun said.

The rumour mills are also abuzz with news that Arjun may play the character of a dacoit in his father Boney Kapoor's next project based on the book “The Confession Of Sultana Daku”.

Intimate scenes are like any other scenes, says Swastika Mukherjee

Actress Swastika Mukherjee, who has certain bold scenes in Dibaker Banerjee's crime thriller "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!", says actors don't think much about kissing or intimate scenes.

Asked if she was skeptical about doing bold scenes on screen, she said: "There was nothing to get ready for or being skeptical about. In Bengal, there is so much of serious work being done that actors don't think much about kissing or intimate scenes.

"The kind of subjects they (filmmakers) are doing these days, intimacy will be there. There are so many scenes in 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela' as well. It's not a big thing anymore. People don't even think about it. It's just like any other scene," she added.

The actress, who hails from Kolkata, says she wants to do more performance-oriented roles.

"For me, the language, or if I am the lead or not, all these things don't matter. It's my performance that matters the most to me."

"Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!", releasing on Friday, features Sushant Singh Rajput as the protagonist.

Actor-anchor Manish Paul, a gadget buff, has been roped in as the ambassador of Lapcare, a brand of smartphone, tablet and laptop accessories and peripherals.

He is happy to associate with Lapcare, a brand which he believes is "synonymous with innovation, style and functionality".

"I'm a gadget buff and very selective about the products I use. So, when I came across the funky products of Lapcare, I felt that they fit my technology-related needs, style, and personality very well," Manish said in a statement.

Known for anchoring shows like "India's Got Talent", "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa" and other live shows, Manish is known for packing in fun, style, and youth appeal.

The move to rope him in to endorse Lapcare is part of the company’s aggressive strategy to reach out to youth and tap newer markets.

The "Mickey Virus" actor will be promoting Lapcare and Lapcare Yo! series’ entire range of products, including Bluetooth speakers, headsets and powerbanks, among others. A national campaign starring the actor would begin in the first week of April across print, digital and various other mediums.

Sandeep Popli, chief operating officer, Lapcare, says this association with Manish is their "first major endeavour to grow Lapcare as a national brand in the mobile and tablet accessories market".

"We wanted someone who embodied youthful zest, has a unique style and most importantly, a connect with the masses. Manish fit the bill perfectly for us, as someone who is popular across the country, yet adds a dash of much-needed freshness to the campaign.

"It helps us to break the clutter and position Lapcare as a unique, innovative and stylish brand geared towards the youth," Popli said.

If you're fit, you're hit: Kabir on playing villain

0
0

Model-turned-actor Kabir Duhan Singh, who made a smashing debut as the antagonist in last week's Telugu actioner "Jil", says fitness is equally important for actors who play baddies on screen.

"Fitness is no longer just important for heroes. Even actors who play villain roles give equal importance about being fit and looking good. We are in the entertainment industry and it matters how you look. As a villain if you're fit, you're hit," Kabir told IANS.

Kabir's role as the dreaded don in "Jil" has been received well. He says offers have been pouring.

"Ever since the film's release, I'm flooded with calls from the south industry. My Facebook page has received record number of likes. Although I'm a newcomer, I'm delighted that audiences have accepted me. Their response has been overwhelming and it makes me feel like as if I made them sit through the film," he said.

While Kabir had received several offers in the past, he was hell bent on debuting in the south in a big project.

"I was very keen on making my debut with a prestigious banner and alongside a popular star and hence, I was exploring more opportunities in the south. It's tough for a newcomer without any contacts to make it big in Bollywood, which is very star-studded," he said.

"In south, when you have the potential, you get to showcase it in strong roles. The directors here make you deliver beyond one's potential," said Kabir, who has already worked on Ravi Teja-starrer "Kick 2".

Kabir is excited about "Kick 2", which is nearing completion and will release in cinemas this May.

"Director Surender is very happy with my work. I play actor Ravi Kishan's son and come in the film at a very important juncture. I come from abroad and lock horns with Ravi Teja. The scenes between us will be much talked about," he said.

Kabir says he wants to work only in big projects backed by studios.

"Since I've started with a big project, I can't afford to choose small projects now. Had audiences not accepted me in 'Jil', I'd have thought about working in smaller project but I'm happy I've been welcomed. I'm only keen on working alongside big stars," said Kabir, who wants to use his powerful eyes to distinguish himself from other villains in the industry.

"There are so many villains, but very few can strike fear with their eyes," he said.

Kabir is also working in Kannada actor Prajwal Devraj's 25th film, while he is in talks for superstar Puneeth Rajkumar's next project in the language.

In Tamil, he is in discussions with the makers of actor Ajith Kumar's next project with director Siva.

Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin trash censors over 'Dharam Sankat..'

0
0

While there were reports that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) invited religious leaders for the screening of "Dharam Sankat Mein", film's lead actors Paresh Rawal and Naseruddin Shah say the idea is absurd.

Reacting to the reports of calling a Muslim maulvi and a Hindu priest for the screening, Paresh Rawal told reporters: "...getting Pandit and Maulvi to watch a film is a dangerous sign."

Adding to this, Naseeruddin said: "It's absurd, in fact. For me, it's beyond absurdity."

Reportedly, the board's reasoning seems to be that if the religious leaders gave the film a “clean chit” before certification, it would save the board and the makers from controversies later.

"Dharam Sankat Mein" revolves around Hindu man Dharampal (Paresh) who goes through an identity crisis when he discovers he was adopted as a child and born to a Muslim family.

Directed by Fuwad Khan, “Dharam Sankat Mein” also features Annu Kapoor among others. The film is slated for April 10 release.

Cinema has brought India, Egypt closer: Amitabh Bachchan

0
0

Terming cinema a "great integrator", Bollywood mega star Amitabh Bachchan has said Hindi movies have, over the years, brought the historic cultures of India and Egypt closer.

Interacting with the media at the inauguration of the "India by the Nile" festival here on Monday, Bachchan noted that the two countries have always enjoyed "good relations" and the bond has been further strengthened by cinema.

"Cinema is a great integrator. Movies give us an opportunity to laugh and cry together. When we go to watch a movie we don't ask the religion or caste of the person sitting next to us," Bachchan, who enjoys a huge fan following in Egypt, said.

The superstar has been roped in for the third edition of the festival being organised by the Indian embassy in partnership with Egypt's ministry of culture and tourism as well as the Cairo Opera House.

Bachchan said the festival (March 30 to April 17) is an opportunity to bring the Indian and Egyptian cultures together.

"We've had a historic legacy as both the civilisations grew up on the banks of two rivers - the Ganges and the Nile.

"We've always had good relations with Egypt and this festival provides an opportunity to bring the two cultures together," he said.

"It's wonderful for the film industry."

Speaking on Egypt's tourism industry which has been hit the most in the wake of the 2011 political upheaval, Bachchan said things have started to look up.

"Egypt is an important destination for tourists owing to it's rich history. And now things are settling down here," said Bachchan.

The River by the Nile festival too is an attempt to give a boost to the tourism sector of Egypt -- the country's major revenue earner.

In addition to screening Bachchan's films, the festival will promote yoga, Indian handicrafts, folk dances and street food among the locals.

Bachchan hoped that more and more Indians will be lured toward Egypt in the near future.

Films for internet is the future: Homi Adajania

0
0

Celebrities can be seen taking the virtual route to stay connected to their fans, but filmmaker Homi Adajania feels that making films for internet is the next big thing. He says internet allows people to pick films matching to their sensibilities.

“I am very interested in exploring films for the internet. I believe that is the future. The democracy of the net allows the audience to find your films rather than the film finding the audience,” Adajania told IANS.

Adajania, who is in news for his over two-minute visual piece for Vogue "My Choice" on women's empowerment, noted that promotional activities for films will also be tweaked with the change in platform.

“For 'Finding Fanny', we had to think about marketing it in a certain way so that the desired audiences would come to the theater; but online it’s different. If people are interested in 'Finding Fanny', they will search for it,” he added.

However, the filmmaker, who has earlier helmed "Cocktail" and "Being Cyrus", also pointed out that there is a need to explore all dimensions before diving into this format.

“If you can figure how this model works out economically for the producer then that’s the way to go. The possibilities and opportunities are immense; we can make any story - there are so many options to explore in terms of formats and this is exciting.

“I mean imagine watching your actors performing a one-act live, like a play, where the audience dictates the direction of the narrative. These are exciting times to tell stories,” he said.

So other than films, what keeps him busy?

“Running away from the city as much as I can! I want to do a course but I’m not sure if it’s cooking or writing. Apart from that, juggling between the usual adventure sports and baby-sitting take up a fair share of my time,” he said.

'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai' trailer released, goes down and dirty

From Ram Kapoor's double-meaning ticklers to seductive stints of actress Sunny Leone, the trailer of comedy caper film “Kuch Kuch Locha Hai” that has been released on Tuesday sees the uncommon pair going wild and dirty.

The trailer of the film shows Ram as a 45-year-old married man, Pravin Patel, who witnesses a “locha” (turmoil) in his life after he gets a chance to meet Bollywood star Shanaya (Sunny), whom he always fantasised about.

The bikini-clad Sunny takes the glamour quotient to another level by showing each and every avatar of her from flaunting red sari to mini skirts.

Delhi boy Navdeep Chhabra, who is making his debut with the film, is playing the role of Ram's musician son, Jiggy who wants to marry his rockstar neighbour Naina (played by Evelyn Sharma).

Meanwhile, Ram can be seen gazing at Sunny who is posing in a yellow bikini in the film's first look that was also unveiled on Tuesday.

'Nanbenda' could be called 'Ok Ok' part 2: Udhayanidhi

0
0

Actor-producer Udhayanidhi Stalin says his forthcoming Tamil comedy "Nanbendaa, which releases on Thursday, could be referred to as the sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit "Oru Kal Oru Kannadi" (Ok Ok).

"'Nanbenda' could be called 'Ok Ok' part 2. Whatever is expected when Santhanam and I team up, you'll find all that in this movie. Santhanam plays my wingman in love. It's about the story of three childhood friends who fight, separate and reunite many years later," Udhay told IANS.

The movie features Udhay and comedian Santhanam as best friends.

"Audiences loved the scenes featuring Santhanam and I in 'Ok Ok'. Our combination worked wonders for the film. We've milked the hit combination once again," he said.

Ask Udhay why the combination didn't work in their last outing "Oru Kathirvelan Kadhal", and pat comes the reply: "The reason it didn't work as well as 'Ok Ok' was because we tossed in some family sentiment, which was not received well by everybody. The unanimous feedback was that people walked in to see something as funny as 'Ok Ok', but what we gave them was not even close".

In Jagadeesh-directed "Nanbenda", Udhay is paired with Nayantara for the second time in a row.

"I've known her since 'Aadhavan' days. When she heard the script, she felt the character was very close to her real self and hence agreed to be part of the project. By now, we've all become such a great team and it's so much fun working with her and others too," he added.

Udhay, who has mostly relied on comedy and bromance, has tried some action too in the film.

"I generally don't like action and prefer making light-hearted comedy entertainers. But I realised audiences expect me to do more than just comedy, especially after my second film. So we've done a small action sequence this time," he said.

Unlike "Ok Ok", the actor won't be seen piggybacking on Santhanam here.

"With 'Nanbenda', I've graduated to the next level and have equal screen space with Santhanam as my director felt that he dominated me in 'Ok Ok'. Scenes were specially written for me in this movie," said Udhay.

The team shot three songs in exotic locations such as Bali, London and Ireland.

Udhay is currently shooting for "Gethu" and will soon start working on "Idhayam Murali".
