0

In keeping with its aim to provide a platform to new designers, the Indian Federation for Fashion Development (IFFD) has announced names of 18 new designers who will get a chance to exhibit their talent at the India Runway Week Season-4.

IFFD has shortlisted the designers for two categories -- New-Gen and Budding Designer -- on the basis of their quality, innovation and marketability for the event to be held from April 10 to 12 here. Ten fashion enthusiasts have come on board for the New Gen category, while eight have found a place in the latter.

“IFFD has nurtured fresh fashion talent over three seasons of India Runway Week and provided them with an opportunity to showcase their creativity. We expect them to grow to their fullest potential while maintaining their individuality,” Avinash Pathania, IFFD founder, said in a statement.

Zeroing in on the designers was not an easy task as there were more than 250 submissions for the spot. India Runway Week fashion director Kiran Kheva said the increase in the number of applicants is a positive sign.

“The increased number of entries along with the continued growth of the India Runway Week reaffirms the platform’s stature in terms of relevance and reach in the Indian fashion market,” Kheva said.

Nani took giant leap with 'Yevade Subramanyam': Director

0
0

Director Nag Ashwin says actor Nani took a giant leap in terms of performance in forthcoming Telugu film "Yevade Subramanyam", which is not an easy film to accept as the story has no point of reference.

"Actors usually go a step or two further for any project in terms of performance. But Nani literally took a giant leap with my film. The story is such that there's no point of reference. I don't think any other established actor would've even expressed interest to work," Ashwin told IANS.

Unable to place "Yevade Subramanyam" in a single genre, Ashwin calls it a "happy movie".

"It's tough to attach one genre to it. It's an existential comedy with a hint of philosophy. But the content is not intense. It's about a highly successful and ambitious guy called Subramanyam, who finds answers to questions he asks himself on a journey," he said.

But it's not even a road film, clarifies Ashwin, who shot for nearly a month in the Himalayas.

"We were reasonably a small crew and since there were no roads, all of us had to trek to reach the shooting spot. And this whole experience, maybe it was because of the oxygen level, it made us feel closer to the gods," Ashwin said.

"Not many would be willing to put themselves through this kind of a rigorous shoot. We were living in small inns and were completely disconnected from the outside world because there was no phone or internet connectivity. In a way, it was a sort of self-discovery for all of us," he added.

Talking about the experience, Ashwin said: "After a while, all of us started peeling off things which we thought were important in life. When you're thrown in such a place, you don't belong to the category of people who define themselves by their jobs, bank balance and realise who they truly are."

He added that they even braved a typhoon to complete shooting in the mountains.

The film, which is slated to release in cinemas on Saturday, also features Malavika Nair, Ritu Varma, Vijay Deverakonda and Sowcar Janaki in important roles.

Initially, Ashwin wasn't sure if Malavika could pull off her role. But he was proven wrong.

"I thought there was something very special about this girl; something unique unlike other heroines. When I initially met her and spoke to her, I didn't know if she had it in her. But the way she transformed on the screen is unbelievable," he said.

"When I was watching the film, I realised that she just lights up on screen. It's once in a lifetime that you get actresses with the rare combination of beauty and talent. Malavika is one such actress and she reminds me so much of veteran artist Shobana," he added.

Ashwin believes "Yevade Subramanyam" truly deserves big screen viewing for the overall experience.

"There are few films that are worth experiencing on the big screen. And some films are good watching with your family even at home, but 'Yevade Subramanyam' deserves theatrical viewing, for the Himalayan experience can't be enjoyed on your television or computer screen," he said.

Can point camera at anything in India: Filmmaker John Madden (IANS Interview)

0
0

India's vibrancy, rich culture and chaos of urban life turned out to be magnets for John Madden, who has shot two of his films --"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and its sequel -- in the country. The English director says every frame in the nation is worth capturing.

His film's sequel, "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", is being released by Fox Star Studios in India on Friday. The movie has more things Indian than its locations -- there are actors like Lillete Dubey, Tina Desai and British actor of Indian descent Dev Patel.

Madden sat down to talk about his fascination with India during a tete-a-tete with IANS here.
"It is so different culturally. It is colours that define Rajasthan, but it also has an energy which is so powerful," he said.
Both his films are extensively shot in Jaipur and Udaipur.

"The films are more about chaos of urban life in Rajasthan and I was very affected by that. My point is that you can point your camera on anything, and you will find something interesting (in India)," added the 65-year-old, who was here to promote his movie.

The director, whose film "Shakespeare in Love" won an Academy Award, has captured the essence of daily life in India - with its cycle rickshaws, bargaining in flea markets and more.

When Madden came to India for his new film, he says it strengthened his bond with the country.

"I understood it better. I felt a stronger sense of identity with India. The country is stimulating, vibrant and astonishing to the greyer tones to the British life or western lifestyle," said the filmmaker.

The impact reflects in his movies.

His 2012 movie revolved around life of a bunch of Britons who come to India to find a new meaning to their life post-retirement, and how they end up in a hotel in Rajasthan; while the second one in the franchise narrates their journey after they decide to stay back.

Madden says the sequel is about "simulation" with "more Indian perspective".

"If you say that the first film was about a group of people, who have never been to India, and cultural collision, so the second is about simulation. These people make a colossal choice to stay in India.

"Their life in India carry certain implications and that is what the second one is about. I think it is also fair to say that the emphasis of the film is more on Indian perspective," he said.

The film is high on talent with an ensemble of actors like Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Richard Gere, apart from the talented Indian cast members.

Asked how this experienced cast impacted his job as a director, he joked: "Well, you don't have to teach anybody how to act."

On a serious note, he said: "Their experience made it easy for me in one way, but in another way it was a challenge. The film is not about any single one of them, but about all of them."

With most characters being aged in the movie, Madden has used "gallows humour" to help audiences embrace the truth of life.

"I think in both films, humour comes out as an acknowledgment of mortality. One thing Britishers are good at is gallows humour. I think all the people in the film are aware of how old they are and their way of dealing with it is to make jokes about it," said Madden, who has also made films like "The Debt" and "Proof".

Popular Telugu comedian Brahmanandam, who has over 1,000 films to his credit, says he is cutting down on offers to concentrate on penning his autobiography, which he plans to finish by this year-end.

"I want to focus on completing my autobiography. I need quality time to finish it by this year-end," he said.

The 59-year-old says it's not easy to turn down offers.

No film producer will doubt my integrity: Pahlaj Nihalani

Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani, who is in the news after film fraternity members reportedly complained against his autocratic ways, says no film producer can doubt his integrity.

Amid all the controversy, Nihalani is playing it cool.

"Let them try to get rid of me. The information and broadcasting ministry is aware of what I am doing and who are the people who want me out. The brokers and middlemen are conspiring with the disgruntled elements in the CBFC to create bad blood between me and the film fraternity.

"But they forget I've been a part of the film industry for many decades. No film producer will doubt my integrity," he said.

Nihalani was appointed CBFC chairperson in January. His stance against vulgarity and abusive language in films has led film industry members to stand up against his 'diktats'.

Some film celebrities, including Ramesh Sippy and Aamir Khan even met Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Monday.

But Rathore said the meeting was not to displace Nihalani, but rather to discuss issues, ideas and suggestions.

Rathore also met certain CBFC members on Tuesday to discuss modernisation of the board.

'Dil Ki Baatein' celebrates life, not death: Mahesh Bhatt

0
0

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who was in the capital on Wednesday to promote the forthcoming TV show "Dil Ki Baatein", which touches upon euthanasia, says the Ram Kapoor-Gurdeep Kohli starrer will promote a zest for life among the people.

"'Dil Ki Baatein' celebrates life because there is death, and thank god there is death because (otherwise) people won't realise what life is all about. It is about a zest towards life," Bhatt, who has penned the show's concept, said here.

The filmmaker said the show "has been made passionately because it comes from an area of my life where I've gone through such circumstances".

"It's possibly the most powerful autobiography and narratives that I've drawn out from my heart," said Bhatt, who was joined by Ram and the show's co-producers Guroudev Bhalla and Dhaval Gada at a press conference here.

Talking about what aspect of his life the show highlights, the "Arth" director said: "It comes from a very intense relationship that I had with this man named U.G. Krishnamurti, who was my friend, guide and philosopher. Whatever I am, is based on the backdrop of my understanding that I had towards him.

"In March 2007 (when Krishnamurti died), I had to go through this very painful process of making a decision, similar to what the character (in the show) does -- how do you go about executing the desire of the person who you love the most...when that person says allow me to make an exit from the world, what will you do then... Will you allow him to go or do you and your own selfishness will block his way?"

The story of the show -- loosely based on Bhatt's 1989 film "Daddy" -- revolves around Ram (played by Ram himself), who wants to rescue his terminally ill wife Anandita (essayed by Gurdeep) and how he and his children try to bring her back into their lives.

Talking about his character, Ram said: "I'm very privileged and honoured to be a part of this project. I know it's going to take a lot from me because I'm an actor who likes to connect to his roles and feel them intentionally."

Ram says he didn't do any preparations for his role in the show.

"I' a married man too. I also have two children. I connected to my role quickly. What I thought is that I'll try and connect Ram (the character) to my real life.

"Whenever I was performing in front of the camera, I was not thinking about my reel family. I was looking at my real family. When I saw her (Gurdeep) on the death bed, my eyes were full of tears because in my mind it was my real wife Gautami. That's what connected me well to my character. He is very close to me," he added.

Apart from Ram and Gurdeep, "Dil Ki Baatein", which will be aired on March 23 on Sony Entertainment Television, will also star Mahima Makhwana, Ratna Shinde and Pankaj Dheer.

The show is likely to bring freshness in the telly world.

"We want to redefine the kind of stories that are currently aired on television. TV usually shows 'saas bahu' shows and kitchen politics, but with a show of this kind, we want to rewrite the root of television industry," said producer Guroudev Bhalla.

LFW: Gen Next show kicks off summer-resort edition in style

0
0

Lakme Fashion Week's role as platform promoting young and budding designers was quite visible on the opening day of the fashion gala's summer-resort 2015 edition on Wednesday with some fresh faces showcasing their collections whose unique and out-of-the-box themes left fashionistas mesmerized.

The five-day fashion event started here at the Hotel Palladium and unlike many other platforms where established names are given the responsibility to open, the LFW started with Gen Next show where six new designers showcased their creativity.

Mentored by ace couturier Anita Dongre and presented by INIFD, the 19th edition of the Gen Next show witnessed collections that were a fabulous mix of creativity, style, innovations and trend setting directions.

Kicking off was Alan Alexander Kaleekal with a collection illustrating how a child would reinterpret an adult wardrobe. Moving away from specific norms of fashion and categories, the line was an eye-catching offering of stylish clothes, using a colour story of ecru and black to craft a sheer-solid tie-up dress, a cotton boxy tunic, a cut-away overall with cropped top and a rear back tie-up tunic with shorts.

Ankit Carpenter's collection focused on timeless clean construction and silhouettes. Inspired by the cactus, the outfits exuded sophisticated elegance, luxury and comfort, yet had a wild streak and beauty. It comprised jumpsuits, one-shoulder dresses, pant suits, embroidered gowns and many more.

Next was Kanika Goyal whose collection was inspired by the stillness of the night and the wild instincts this time evokes. Using glass nylon, polyester satin, denim, lycra, lamb leather and cow hide in shades of white, beige as well as lilac, the designer showed a line that had a clever mix of textures.

Manish Bansal's menswear range was inspired by the suit of cards as well as the garb of corporate head honchos. His designs gave suits a new dimension. Blending past and present fashion statements, the designer showed a knit kurta with kangaroo pockets, shorts, Bermudas with racer back tank, shirts with a single embellished sleeve sporting the playing card casino print, zippered blouson and thigh-long coat with discreet prints.

Priyanka Ella Lorena Lama presented an inspired collection from the mythical utopia. Her ensembles had that unconventional quality that is aimed to create aesthetics via constrained imperfections but with a restrained design story. Draped Zen like kimonos, kaftans with long trails, wrap-around oriental creation with looped back, ballooning sleeves, dress with rouched draped cover, rolled collar cloak and the final batwing long kaftan, were some of her pieces.

Inspired by Pablo Picasso's cubist painting "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon", Salita Nanda's designs were designed for the young stylish woman. Working with digital prints and a series of 3D printed fabrics, she creatively brought out the African undertones in Picasso's masterpiece with prints and symbols that portrayed love, beauty and strength.

Off-white was the base of the collection for the artistic prints, which appeared on jumpsuits, cropped tops, skirts, an unusual boxy rectangular tube over skirt, wrap around shorts, applique printed maxi and a striking off-shoulder cropped top with a lampshade shaped skirt.
