0

Emmy and Golden Globe-winning stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld's debut performances in India on March 14 and 15 have been cancelled due to traffic and parking issues at the venue.

The performances were scheduled to take place at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium here.

"Fans who have purchased tickets for the shows will be issued a full refund by March 25 - details about the same have been e-mailed to all ticket buyers and a special helpline will be in operation from Monday onwards to address any queries that fans might have," said a statement from the organisers, Only Much Louder.

"The cancellation was unavoidable due to circumstances beyond the artist's and the organiser's control. Issues related to traffic and parking at the venue, which were brought to attention only recently, forced the cancellation of all artist travel arrangements," the statement further reads.

Seinfeld's comedy career took off after his first appearance on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" in 1981 and he later became the man behind comedy series "Seinfeld".

Sona Mohapatra remembers 'brave' Kolkata rape survivor

Reminiscing about her meeting with the "feisty" and "brave" Park Street rape survivor, Suzette Jordan who died here of encephalitis, singer Sona Mohapatra said the news of her death is "upsetting, depressing and very heartbreaking."

"Upsetting, depressing and very heartbreaking news. The feisty, brave and wronged Jordan is dead. Met her during the 'Satyamev Jayate' shoot," Mohapatra tweeted late Friday.

Mohapatra, known for recording remixes with English singer-songwriter David Bowie ("Let's Dance") and with Australian rock band INXS on the hugely popular song "Afterglow", said the treatment meted out to Jordan by society was "worse" than the incident.

"Make sure that we don't do this to another woman. How we treated her as a society after the ghastly night was worse than the gang rape..." she said.

The 40-year-old from the Anglo-Indian community died early Friday following multiple organ failure while suffering from encephalitis.

The "Ambarsariya", "Naina" and "Jiya Laage Na" singer urged people to read about the "feisty" and "brave" woman.

"I had met the feisty, brave and very wronged Jordan during the shoot of my song 'Bekhauf Azad' in 'Satyamev Jayate' and just got this upsetting, depressing news of her death online. Do read her story aa#aZIndia. Share her story," the performer posted on her official Facebook page.

Coming out of a night club on Park Street, the woman was allegedly raped at gunpoint inside a moving car in February 2012.

The mother of two revealed her identity in 2013 and marched on the streets of Kolkata to protest a series of rapes and murders in the state.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had courted controversy after she dubbed the incident as "fabricated".

However, police subsequently cracked the case and arrested most of the attackers.

While five persons have been charged with the offence by the court, only three are behind bars. Two others, including the prime suspect, are on the run and remain untraced.

Return of the 1990s: Is music trend here to stay?

0
0

What the tunes of "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" managed to do for music lovers hasn't happened in Hindi filmdom for a long time - they have enlivened the aura of romantic, lyrical and meaningful songs of the 1990s. Singers and composers of that era hope that the "melodious times" will some day return to filmdom.

During the 1990s, Bollywood composers came up with some memorable romantic tracks. "Mujhe neend na aaye", "Tu meri zindagi hai", "Dekha hai pehli baar" and "Maine pyar tumhi se kiya hai" are cases in point.

But in current times, the music charts are topped by the likes of rap numbers and songs with double entendre lyrics. In such times, the music of "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" came as a clutter-breaker.

Kumar Sanu, one of the post-romantic voices of 1990s and the voice of songs like "Tu" and "Dard karaara" from "Dum Laga Ke Haisha", feels that it's time to give listeners some "good music".

"We are missing meaningful and lyrical songs nowadays. There are many reasons for the lack of it, and one of it is lack of confidence. Producers have no confidence on directors; directors have no confidence on music directors; and music directors have no confidence on singers. This is the reason why we are going through such a bad phase (in music)," Sanu told IANS.

"All teenagers are enjoying 1990s music. The audiences are not so useless that they'll listen to songs like 'Chaar bottle vodka'. We force people to hear such songs and when people hum it, we say it's a hit. It's time to think what are we giving to society with such meaningless songs," he added.

The story of "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" is set in the 1990s, just when audio and video cassettes were going out of fashion. Its tunes, composed by Anu Malik, are thus rightly suited for its setting.

Altaf Raja, another singer who has created ripples in the music industry with his album "Tum toh thehre pardesi", calls the resurgence of 1990s inspired songs a "cycle".

"Change is a constant and after every 15 years, there is recycling of the songs. India is a vast country when it comes to lyrics. I feel that if we have so much to give to the world in terms of shayari and all, why don't we utilise it?" Raja told IANS.

Veteran singer-composer Bappi Lahiri, who has always had a pulse of the listener's taste, says "melodious tracks are always appreciated".

"Melody is good and it brings freshness. I feel that in today's time, wordings of songs need to be changed, as young generation is in love with the old style of melody," Lahiri, who has lent his voice for a song in forthcoming film "Hunterrr", told IANS.

For Salim Merchant of music composer duo Salim Sulaiman, hip-hop and EDM (electronic dance music) genres are mainly heard in metro cities, but in places like Ghaziabad, Jaipur, Rourkela, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar and other small cities, they prefer more 'desi' tunes.

"They love our own Indian music, whether it's Bollywood or classical. They are more used to it. I don't feel that Indian classic can ever deplete from the music industry. The problem is that most Indian filmmakers and record labels are not trying to promote music, which is made classically," Salim told IANS.

The music duo always make sure to create songs with a classical touch -- be it "Rasiya" for the film "Kurbaan" or "Aayo ji" in "Satyagraha". However, Salim rues that these "songs are not promoted like item songs".

"For that we have to fight against the system (in filmdom), but Indian cinema is very passionate about promoting our culture and our country," he said, adding that "the Indian music industry is being ruled by a couple of...music labels".

Without taking any names, he added: "They are not giving people a choice to listen to other genres. They are promoting a stereotypical kind of music, which is working. But that is unfortunate, because whatever people listen on the radio and channels is actually directed by them."

Jerry Seinfeld's Mumbai show: Organisers explain cancellation

0
0

It is "unfortunate" that Emmy and Golden Globe-winning stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld's maiden shows here had to be cancelled due to last minute traffic and parking related issues, says a representative of the show's organising body Only Much Louder (OML).

The official announcement of the cancellation of the performances, which were scheduled to take place at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium, National Sports Club of India (NSCI) here on Saturday and Sunday, came from the organisers on Friday.

Explaining the turn of events, Vijay Nair, CEO, OML, told IANS: “Everything was going on track until Wednesday, when we got a call from the local police station saying that they're not going to give the event a license because there are some parking issues and they've decided that shows can't be given permission at NSCI."

The cancellation of the license came as a result of the increased pressure on the Mumbai traffic police after a major fracas that took place on March 1, when Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' convoy reportedly held up traffic outside NSCI as he was on his way there for a political event.

“...Police had to re-think licensing of events at this venue. However, the first time we were told about this issue was on March 11. We did everything we could to come up with solutions, including offering to book additional parking and doing the show at 3 p.m. so that traffic would be minimal.

“However, this was not satisfactory for the authorities and we were told that the event would not get a license,” Nair added.

The organisers, who have previously organised events like the AIB Knockout and Russell Peter's performance in India last month, were forced to call up Seinfeld and cancel the event.

“...On the night of March 11, a few hours before the artist’s crew were scheduled to get on a flight, we called them and cancelled the show. The private jet which was booked for the artist was also cancelled,” he said.

Just as OML was about to go public with the cancellation, Nair got a call from the authorities on Thursday and was called for a meeting. Due to the involvement of an international star, the authorities decided to give the go ahead since a last minute cancellation would reflect badly on the country.

This was, however, not possible since the logistical arrangements couldn't be made to get Seinfeld here in time.

“Since this would be a last minute cancellation, the authorities were trying to help us with a plan to let this weekend’s events go on... Having cancelled the performance with the artist already, we did our best to re-book a charter and look at every possible option to get them here on time.

“Unfortunately, with all our travel arrangements changed, parking slots cancelled and crew being re-assigned, it became impossible to make this work... It was just too late. In short, we were trying to arrange what took us a month the first time around, in 12 hours time,” Nair said.

Although the cancellation of Seinfeld's performance cost OML an estimated $2 million, the comedian's manager and agents were very supportive towards the organisers following the cancellation.

“I was coordinating with Jerry's manager and agents and they were really supportive and understanding but the entire turn of events was unfortunate. Our loss is going to cross about $2 million,” said Nair.

The capacity at the venue was for 3500 occupants per day and, according to Nair, all but 80 tickets were sold out for the first show and a 170 odd remained for the second day.

Fans who purchased tickets for the shows will be issued a full refund by March 25. Details about the same have been e-mailed to all ticket buyers and a special helpline will be in operation from Monday onwards to address any queries that fans might have.

Seinfeld's comedy career took off after his first appearance on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" in 1981 and he later became the man behind comedy series "Seinfeld".

Real hero of 'Tungabhadra' is producer Sai Korrapati: Director

0
0

Debutante director Srinivas says had it not been for the willingness of producer Sai Korrapati to experiment, his forthcoming Telugu action-drama "Tungabhadra" would not have been made.

"My producer is the real hero of the film. If there's one producer, who dares to experiment in Telugu filmdom, it's got to be Sai Korrapati," Srinivas told IANS.

"The film was completely shot outdoor in a single schedule without a break. One can imagine the pressure on a director in such circumstances, but my producer supported us throughout the shoot. He took the pressure off us," he said.

The film was shot near Guntur and its surrounding areas.

"Most of the shooting happened in live locations. When you're shooting in remote villages, it's not easy to control the crowd who likes dropping in on the sets. It was my producer, who came to our rescue and that's why he's our hero," he said.

Slated for release on Friday, "Tungabhadra" is not a faction film clarifies Srinivas.

"Since it's titled 'Tungabhadra', people came to the conclusion that it's a faction-based story set in Rayalaseema. But the story is set in against the backdrop of villages such as Tadikonda and Karlapudi near Guntur," he said.

"The title refers to the rivers Tunga and Bhadra. Here are two big rivers from different parts coming together to form Tungabhadra. But people born and raised in the same place can't live in harmony. If rivers can meet, why not people. This question is addressed through the film," Srinivas added.

The story will highlight things that divide people.

The film features Adith, Dimple Chopda and senior Tamil actor Sathyaraj in the lead roles.

"When I finished scripting, I felt Sathyaraj sir would be perfect for the role. But I had my reservations about whether he'll work in our small film because he usually works in big-budget projects. After I narrated the script, he instantly agreed to be part of the film," he said.

Srinivas admits that Sathyaraj's presence automatically got his film lot of attention.

Adith was cast after the director was impressed with his look in upcoming Tamil film "Orey Nyabagam".

"Adith and Dimple were cast even before Sathyaraj sir. Both of them worked really hard. Dimple particularly held her nerves and shot with great commitment in live locations amidst thousands of people," he said.

According to Srinivas, "Tungabhadra" is a "beautiful love story" packed with a message.

"The title shouldn't mislead the audience. This is a love story laced with good family sentiments. Most of the story takes place within the family of Sathyaraj sir. He plays the heroine's father and their relationship will be talked about," he said.

The film also stars Charandeep and Kota Srinivas Rao in important roles.

Music demand at an all-time high: Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan

0
0

Pakistani singer Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, known for delivering hit Bollywood songs like "Mitwa" and "Yeh honsla", believes that compact discs are getting phased out by the digital platform even as there is a spate of demand for music now.

The singer with roots in classical music is ready with his third album "Muh Dikhai", which will be released on March 20 on Times Music.

"It's an album, which is coming out after five years. I've not worked on any specific genre in this album. There are more Punjabi songs this time for a change and I'm excited about the response from people," Khan told IANS in an email interaction from Lahore, Pakistan.

Asked why he chose to launch "Muh Dikhai" here even as albums are not doing well in India, Khan said: "CD as a format may have gone down, but music consumption is at an all-time high. The difference is that it happens digitally now."

"I've been inundated with fan messages for the last few years asking me for a new album and new content," said the singer, who has performed across the globe including India, Singapore, Britain and Dubai.

The former Fuzon band member entered Bollywood with the popular number "Mitwa" in 2006 and has since then won hearts of many an Indian. He says singing Bollywood tracks takes up a lot of time which is one of the reasons why he took five years to come up with a new album.

"Bollywood and tours take up most of my time. So, there was hardly any time for my own project. But I'm very happy with my work in Bollywood. I've been blessed with some really great tracks and I've worked with the best music directors and some really good compositions," said Khan, who has worked with Indian composers like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Salim-Sulaiman.

Bollywood projects mostly mean singing someone else's compositions. Instead of considering it as a restriction, the artist in Khan takes it up as a challenge.

"Normally, I'm always offered tracks by producers for movies which they feel are made for me. I never feel restricted because singing another music director's or composer's composition is a challenge. You have to meet the requirement and the mark the composer has set for you in that track; so it is a great experience," said the "Aankhon ke saagar" hitmaker.

"Sometimes, when you do not want to sing a particular melody, it becomes an issue because I don't like to tell a composer that I don't like the composition as I feel every creation is that composer's baby. That hasn't happened very often with me, so it's fine," he added.

But he still has the urge to create music for movies.

"Yes, I'm a composer myself and would love to compose for movies some day. 'Kherheyan de naal', which is my composition has been used in 'Tevar'. But I will compose for a movie, the day I receive a meaningful offer," he said.

The 50-year-old, who believes music is "in my blood and my DNA", is a frequent performer in India and says visa authorities have always been kind to him.

"Even the Indian embassy has been very helpful and cooperative with me in giving visas and making my work here possible almost seamlessly. I do follow all the regulations put down by the authorities and they have always been supportive in giving visas," he said.

The artist from across the border might have a large number of fans in India, but he is yet to be honoured with any of the prestigious Indian awards for his talent.

"I won't say that since I haven't bagged any yet, they are not important at all. They have an important place in every singer's career. But not receiving them doesn't stop your creativity or you creating good music," said Khan.
