Technology widening scope for musicians: Amit Trivedi

0
0

National Award winning musician Amit Trivedi, who has composed for films like "Dev D", "Wake Up Sid", "Udaan" and "Queen", says technology has enabled composers to explore a wider range of sounds via computers, and the effort required has reduced to a considerable extent too.

"Technology is widening scope for musicians every now and then. We are getting a better chance to explore ideas through new softwares. It has provided more options to us to showcase our talent," Trivedi told IANS in an interview over the phone from Mumbai.

"More of computer-based music is in demand today, and there is special software through which music is created," he added.

The 35-year-old recently composed a song for the fourth season of "Coke Studio@ MTV".

Talking about the platform for experimental fusion music, Trivedi said: "It's wonderful. There are no actors involved here for whom we have to do lip sync. It's a stage where artists can show their talent without any involvement of film fraternity. It's like telling the world about pure music."

Trivedi is associated with Bollywood, but he has no qualms in admitting that the popularity of film music in the country has restricted the understanding of 'Indian music'.

"Bollywood is a very big platform. Good looking faces (actors) attract people more, and music is just a part of the filmmaking process. That's why in India, music is restricted to films.

"But it doesn't mean that music is overshadowed by actors. There are many well-known film stars who have got recognition through music," said the singer-composer, who says making music for films and for albums is incomparable.

He is also quick to add that while rap, hip-hop and item numbers are increasingly getting popular, Indian classical music will always be part of the country's core music.

"Classical music cannot deplete from Indian industry. It's just that there are new trends coming up. People are widening their choices to new genres. But classical music, which is the root of India, will never get sidelined," he said.

"If people like peppy numbers, then such songs have to be catered to them at regular intervals. If they will demand for classical tracks, then definitely we will make those too," he added.

On his part, he tries to avoid using vulgar lyrics in his songs.

"I never use vulgar and cheap lyrics in my songs, especially the word alcohol. Neither do I try to encourage that culture with my tracks, nor do I love it. All musicians who are using such lyrics are may be doing so because of a film's demand," Trivedi said.

He will next give music for films like "Bombay Velvet", "Guddu Rangeela", "Shandar", "Fittoor" and "Udta Punjab".

Sushant on how Dibakar framed him in kissing scene

0
0

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who shares a kissing scene with his co-star Swastika Mukherjee in the period drama "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!", says director Dibakar Banerjee played a "game" with him for the scene.

"Dibakar (Banerjee) played a good game with me which eventually turned bad for me. He instructed me about a scene and I got ready for it, but I didn't know that Angoori Devi (the character) was going to kiss me in that scene," Sushant, who had earlier kissed actresses Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor on screen, said here.

He says that usually he tells his girlfriend Ankita Lokhande about a film's script "so that she is mentally prepared" for whatever he needs to do.

But in the case of "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!", the director kept the kissing scene a secret.

"I was also not prepared for it. But the interesting thing is that even Byomkesh Bakshy (the character) in the film didn't know about it. So, the first take happened and I reacted the way I was supposed to react as the character, and Dibakar got his take. He didn't tell me and pretended as if he also didn't know about it," added the actor.

He even said that despite getting his perfect shot, Banerjee made him give six more takes.

"He asked for a few more takes. I did six more takes and then called Ankita to tell her that she does not need to worry as nothing of that sort has happened," Sushant revealed here on Monday at the second trailer launch of the film.

But it was upon seeing the film's trailer that he "saw the kiss".

"I looked at Dibakar and was like 'What is this?' So this is how he played such a game with me," he added.

Based on Saradindu Bandyopadhyay's well-known and successful fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshy, "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" is a contemporary interpretation of Calcutta (now Kolkata) during the 1940s. It is an adventure thriller mired in deep political intrigue. It is slated to release April 3.

"Thank god we’re friends and we are rooting for each other in real life because the intensity that we had to build against one another was so deadly,” he added.

Can't spread my arms like SRK: Gulshan Devaiah

0
0

Being a good-looking romantic actor - a la Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan - was not what Gulshan Devaiah was aiming at when he stepped into filmdom. It was Manoj Bajpayee's gritty role in "Satya" and Ram Gopal Varma's dark works that inspired him to be a performance-oriented talent.

Known for playing second lead but intense roles in films like "Shaitan" and "Hate Story", Gulshan told IANS: "I was five or six years old when I thought of being an actor. I grew up imitating Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra.

"But it was after watching Manoj Bajpayee in 'Satya' and old films of Ram Gopal Varma that I decided that I wanted to be a performance-oriented actor rather than just be a good looking one or a romantic actor."

The actor, who also looks up to the critically acclaimed Irrfan Khan, says what superstars like Shah Rukh and Salman do on the big screen, he can't.

"I love Shah Rukh and Salman's films. But I can never spread my arms and look cool. I wanted to do it, but couldn't. So, I figured out my strength and started polishing it," said the actor, who moved to Mumbai from Bengaluru in 2008 to follow his film acting dream.

He is content with his projects.

"I'm happy that I have a film career. I have films in hand and I'm happy living my dream," said Gulshan, who has films like "Cabaret", "Love Affair" and "Junooniyat".

In "Hunterrr", which releases on March 20, he will be seen playing the protagonist. The film is about a sex addict and his lustful journey in life.

"As a protagonist, I have greater responsibility. It is an entertaining script and I hope it does well. But I don't have unrealistic expectations from the film," he said of the movie, directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni, and which also stars Radhika Apte and Sai Tamhanka in important roles.

As much as he loves acting, Gulshan is sure that television is not the medium for him --at least not for now.

"Some people can do a lot of episodes. I like to work for 50 to 60 days and then move on to another project. I don't think I have the aptitude for TV right now. Maybe in the future," he said.

Till then, he hopes to entertain the masses with films that let him explore his versatility.

"I hope I get lots of variety in films that I do. I hope I don't get slotted in one area. I am trying to experiment with my film career," he said

Actor Charandeep, who rose to fame with his antagonist roles in Tamil films such as "Jilla" and "Sigaram Thodu", says he likes to be seen as a powerful villain.

"I have no reservations about playing any role. In fact, I enjoy playing a powerful villain. I think it suits my image," Charandeep told IANS.

Thanks to his dark, tall and six-pack sporting body, he feels he's cut out to play the baddie.

"I spent about three years on learning mixed martial arts and developing six-pack abs. I think all that is finally paying off," said Charandeep, who has four Telugu films and one film each in Kannada and Tamil in his kitty.

Of all the releases, he's most excited about his Kannada debut "Boxer", which is directed by Preetham Gubbi.

"'Boxer' is an out-and-out action film that revolves around kickboxing. The hero and I are pitted against each other in the ring," he said, and admits that his experience in mixed martial arts came in handy while shooting for the film.

Charandeep's big release in Telugu is S.S. Rajamouli's magnum opus "Baahubali".

"I play the villain's brother in the movie. I have limited screen presence in the first part, but I return in an extended role in the second," said Charandeep.

In Telugu, he also has "Vinavayya Ramayya", "Vyuhama and "Tungabhadra" up his sleeve, while in Tamil he's all set to team up with "Sigaram Thodu" director Gaurav again.

Stench problem sorted near Big B's home

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is glad that the stench -- caused by a collapsed sewage line close to his bungalow Jalsa in Juhu here -- which was complained about to the civic corporation, has been taken care of. Meanwhile, he's signed a brand endorsement for a perfume.

"The work on the drainage that had been reported blocked, is perhaps over," Big B posted on his blog srbachchan.tumblr.com.

Bollywood veterans, including Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha and Big B, complained to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) about the stench that had been causing discomfort in Juhu since March 7.

An equipment is hanging about in front of the Bachchan bungalow, and it continues to divert traffic.

However, the 72-year-old says "the stench does not persist thankfully".

"The drilling machine has reached and penetrated the bottom of the Earth, and the neighbours are not complaining. Coincidentally though, I sign on for another product endorsement and its connected to fragrance and perfumery and joss sticks - most valuable in the present circumstances," he added.

Not music to the ears; Goa DJs face drug probe

0
0

The arrest of yet another DJ for possessing and peddling drugs in Goa has forced police to increase surveillance on musicians who are regular fixtures at electronic music dos, especially in coastal areas known for rave parties.

Even as DJ Vickey Fernandes, 23, became the fourth DJ in the last three years to be booked on narcotics charges after his arrest in Assagao village, 20 km from Panaji, police sources told IANS that the department was working on collecting intelligence against other DJs and musicians.

This would depend on their regularity of performances at bars and music hubs known for notoriety and their closeness to individuals with a history of narcotics offences.

"This is the fourth DJ who has been found actively peddling narcotics," a senior official involved in anti-narcotics counter-operations told IANS, refusing to be quoted on record.

"Vickey was a part of a network which provided him drugs and used his connections in the party scene to peddle the contraband," added the official.

Earlier, in 2013, a Japanese DJ, Yasuji Hinagata, was arrested with 'charas' and LSD valued at Rs.8 lakh.

In 2012, a Chennai-based sound engineering student was arrested by the Goa Police for the possession of a stash of various psychotropic drugs, again valued at Rs.8 lakh.

Last year, another foreign national, Briton Allan Bainbridge, was taken into custody at Anjuna for having LSD and MDMA valued at Rs.22 lakh.

"We are exploring whether there is a larger network here. Our effort will be to crack it," says state Narcotics Control Bureau head Superintendent Jitender Ranjan, who headed the raid that led to Vickey's arrest.

Interestingly, all the above DJs, including Vickey, were peddling party drugs popular in Goa's rave and nightlife scene. While LSD is popularly known as acid, the street name for MDMA is ecstasy.

"Some of the DJs are part of this ecosystem because they sell the drugs which are often consumed during these parties. Therefore they become very effective pushers who do not have to reach out to consumers," the police official said.

"Their consumers flock to them," the official said, adding that several foreign DJs did not have business visas and therefore could not "work" as musicians in India.

Increased suspicion of involvement of a certain section of DJs forced the Goa home ministry to increase surveillance on them two years back.

In October 2013, then Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar told the assembly that a watch was being maintained on the foreign disc jockeys for involvement in narcotics activities.

But this time round, the emphasis is on creating a much thorough dossier on DJs and their known associates, right from music lovers, who are in regular attendance, as well as patrons and managers of night clubs as well as beach shacks who hire their services.

Interestingly, for the last three years, the Goa Police have conducted on an average one drug raid every week, which underlines the extent of the drugs and narcotics in circulation in the state.

"Goa, especially the coastal belt in north Goa, is becoming a hub for drugs. The police are simply not doing enough," Michael Lobo, a legislator from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, told IANS.

Two weeks ago, Lobo, much to the embarrassment of the BJP-led coalition government, had gone on a day-long fast to protest against the inaction of the police vis-a-vis drug proliferation.

Goa, one of the top beach tourism destinations in the country, is also known as a hub for cheap narcotics. Goa attracts nearly three million tourists every year, out of whom half a million are foreigners.
