When David Attenborough was scared by rat in Indian toilet

David Attenborough, one of the world's most famous naturalists, says he isn't a fan of rats, especially after being startled by one on a trip to India.

The 88-year-old has revealed that the rodents are one of the few creatures he hates because of an unpleasant experience he had with one while coping with an upset stomach during a recent trip, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Speaking at the launch of "David Attenborough's Natural Curiosities" Wednesday, he said: "I was in India recently and I am by and large not affected by tropical diseases but I did get a bit of the belly, you know, and I had to run to the loo. I was sitting on the loo and I did what I had to do and then I looked up and a rat came out from between my thighs. That is not endearing."

Despite the nauseating incident, the acclaimed documentary maker still finds animals just as fascinating as when he first began his career.

"I think understanding animals enriches your pleasure, finding out how to understand them is the great pleasure. I never stop reading books about man and animals; they're always full of interesting stuff. I'll turn the page and my eyes will be popping out,” he said.

AIB removes controversial video, says 'they're just jokes

After removing controversial videos of AIB Knockout -- a live filmed event -- following outrage, standup comedy group All India Bakchod (AIB) Wednesday posted an open letter explaining that the attempt was to "push the envelope of comedy" in the country with "just jokes".

The AIB team -- Gursimran Khamba, Tanmay Bhat, Rohan Joshi and Ashish Shakya -- via a 720-word letter posted on Twitter Wednesday, reached out to their fans and critics to explain why their decision to pull down the video was "pragmatic".

"They're just jokes. Unfunny, crass or whatever you want to call them, they're still just jokes," they said.

The letter comes after a three-part edited version of the 'Roast', titled AIB Knockout was posted on online video-sharing platform YouTube Jan 28.

AIB Knockout was a December 2014 charity comic event where filmmaker Karan Johar and a panel of comedians 'grilled' actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor on their personal and professional lives. The event raised over Rs.4 million and its videos went viral, sparking laughter in some and debate from others.

But the clips were pulled down Tuesday by AIB after Maharashtra Education and Culture Minister Vinod Tawde ordered a probe following complaints about the below-the-belt contents of the programme which was viewed by a 4,000-strong live audience, and which later generated over 8 million views on YouTube.

Even Brahman Ekta Seva Sanstha president Akhilesh Tiwari lodged a police complaint expressing anger at the programme hosts, who he said used abusive, offensive remarks loaded with sexual overtones during the comedy show.

Later, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena demanded an "unconditional public apology" from all those involved in the event, failing which the organisation would not allow their movies to be screened.

Stressing that "no one person or force forced us to take this video down", the AIB team said that while the idea was to "push the envelope of comedy in this country" in "our own juvenile, idiotic way, but then the envelope pushed back".

"Things got to a point where people who have supported us, people who work hard to make what we do come to life, were put in a position where things could get deeply unpleasant for them. And that's a problem," they added.

After the backlash, the AIB team received support from several Bollywood celebrities, who waxed eloquent against moral policing of the comedy event.

What's he working on now?

Conveying feelings to your crush can sometimes be nerve-racking, but since Valentine's Day is right around the corner, bundle up your guts and try these bold yet magnetic ideas to express your love, Bollywood style.

Inspired by some of the most iconic scenes from various films, toothpaste brand Closeup is hosting a Cupid Games contest, which dares young Indians to be unapologetically bold in expressing their feelings towards their affectionate ones.

Here are some 'dares':

* The Big Surprise: Blindfold your crush or guide them to a breathtaking spot where you can break the news. The more elaborate your plan, the bolder your move. This is inspired by Ranbir Kapoor's surprise for Deepika Padukone in "Bachna Ae Haseeno", which leaves her stunned and amazed.

* The Remote Romance: Ask your crush out on a date, in public, for Valentine's Day. Inspired by Aamir Khan's proposal to Preity Zinta in a dance club in the film "Dil Chahta Hai", that's how a bold and impulsive proposal should be like.

* The Foodie Fiesta: It's a common saying that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. However, that doesn't mean women wouldn't prefer the same. So try and treat your date with a delicious Valentine's Day surprise by putting your culinary skills to test. Inspired by Aditya Roy Kapur's sumptuous delights for Parineeti Chopra in "Daawat-E-Ishq."

* The Radio Romeo: Make sure your beloved is tuned in when you call the radio jockey to ask your crush out live on air. This is inspired by Saif Ali Khan's proposal to Preity Zinta in "Salaam Namaste".

* The High Flier: Show them love is in the air with a Valentine's Day invite attached to a flying object. Balloons, kites, drones -- the choice is yours. Inspired by Rajkummar Rao's attempts to flirt with Kangana Ranaut in the movie "Queen".

* The Dance Dedication: Get a club's disc jockey to dedicate a song to your crush. Then ask them out for Valentine's Day in the middle of the dance floor by busting your moves to that tune. This is inspired by Hrithik Roshan's rocking dance number in "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...", in which he woos Kareena Kapoor through his dazzling dance moves in "You are my Sonia".

The three-day event, that is taking place at Hotel Grand Mercure here, started with Dayal's designs that was surely a perfect amalgamation of bright colours and exotic prints.

Dedicating the show to the adoption of the homeless dog movement by PETA, the designer unleashed a line-up of silhouettes that can be worn separate to bring out the diva in a woman.

Treat every film as first: Akshara Haasan

$
0
0

Sharing the frame with a stalwart like Amitabh Bachchan and a star actor like Dhanush in her debut movie "Shamitabh" has helped Akshara Haasan imbibe a valuable learning for her film journey - that she must treat every new project as her first.

The 23-year-old, younger daughter of acclaimed actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika, was offered films galore before "Shamitabh" landed on her lap. And even though her role is one among those essayed by the Big B and Dhanush, Akshara completely surrendered herself for her role to the director of the film, R. Balakrishnan.

"I trusted Balki sir for 'Shamitabh'. When I read the script, I loved it and I wanted to do it instantly. And knowing the fact that it has two amazingly talented actors, I didn't let my trust go from Balki sir as I knew he'll let me shine," Akshara told IANS in an interview during a visit here.

Of course, the young and talented girl has been feeling the pressure of being the daughter of versatile actors, but she says "there was no pressure on me to star opposite such big names".

"They all stood by my side and helped me grow as an actor. They actually made me feel comfortable on the sets. I have learnt a lot from them and there's a lot more that I can still learn.

"I've learnt the passion and the drive that they have for their work and how they treat every film as their first film. I wish to have that same amount of dedication and hardwork that they give to their roles," she added.

Akshara feels "Shamitabh", which hit the screens Friday, was the perfect choice for her to step into filmdom as an actor.

"I never thought of a debut like 'Shamitabh'. Earlier, I was approached for 10 to 15 films which I declined, but I didn't want to let down this opportunity to learn from them (those working on the film). I never imagined that my debut will be so big," said the newcomer, whose elder sister Shruthi is a popular actress and songstress.

Akshara's preparation for her role in "Shamitabh" involved rehearsals and training to fluently deliver dialogues in Hindi. After the movie, she wants to focus on making herself an actress who can juggle different genres.

And, along the way, she hopes to become an actress with her "own identity".

Producer Chandrapal Singh turns director with 'Azamgarh'

Chandrapal Singh, who has produced two movies - "Lakeer Ke Fakeer" and "Bhouri" - is now all set with his directorial debut "Azamgarh".

"I belong to Azamgarh (in Uttar Pradesh), a place that has a negative impression in the media and the world. I have always witnessed that bad things are remembered and good things are forgotten," Chandrapal Singh told IANS.

The director, who was born and raised in Azamgarh, moved to Mumbai in 1996. According to him, some people from his place may indulge in wrong activities to achieve their target, but the entire city can't be blamed.

"I wanted to portray all the elements in my movie. My movie will have situation-driven crime. And for the rest, it's too early to reveal details. But the film ends with a message that 'I Belong To Azamgarh and I Am Not A Criminal'".

He contends that a "city or place is not a reason behind any crime".

"A majority of people have made a misconception that Azamgarh is crime-oriented. Mumbai is India's financial capital. We've got crime here also, but we never blame any Mumbai resident as a criminal. So why Azamgarh?"

The director is not yet keen to reveal the cast of his film.

"My script demands all intense characters who can understand the depth of the story. So with no compromise, we shall go for all A-Listers artists only," he said.

Chandrapal Singh will produce "Azamgarh" under the S. Video Pictures Pvt Ltd banner and is likely to go on the floors by April.

'Shamitabh' - ode to Big B's baritone, human mortality (IANS Movie Review, Rating: *****)

$
0
0

Film: "Shamitabh"; Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Dhanush and Akshara Haasan; Writer-Director: R. Balakrishnan; Rating: *****

Balki must really stop doing this. This is the third time he has stunned us with his originality and audacity and engagingness. He's spoiling us silly.

His third feature film is perhaps his most audacious cinematic journey yet. The writer-director takes the voice of Mr. Bachchan (in other words, the voice of the nation) and puts it on Dhanush, that intelligent Tamil actor who is rapidly emerging as the inheritor to Kamal Haasan.

It really can't any more audacious than this...though admittedly, there's no telling what Balki would dare to do next.

"Shamitabh" opens yet another door to Balki's creative resourcefulness. There are only three main characters in the film -- the film-obsessed mute Danish; Amitabh Sinha, the autumnal cauldron of discontent who gives voice to Danish's dream; and the very cute assistant director Akshara (Akshara Haasan), who plays a reluctant and rather frail mediator between the two raging men. She is really not up to the task. But then, life never plays fair.

Given the inventive premise of the plot and the sheer charm of the three principal actors, Balki could have comfortably allowed the narrative to work itself out. Blessedly there is no lazy writing in this powerful film. Almost every narrative twist is cleverer and wiser than it would outwardly seem. At times, you may think the film is trying to act smarter than it actually is and in the process, it may seem as though the narrative is getting carried away with itself.

But no. Every action has a profound cause. There is a grand design behind every seemingly spontaneous movement in the plot. You may wonder why Amitabh, the embittered alcoholic actor with a voice that could move mountains, lives in the graveyard (with an entertaining sidekick-cum-confidante)...A bit of a metaphoric indulgence, you would say. But wait for the film's stunning finale: death is indeed a grave matter, specially in lives that have seen better days.

Balki's characters light up the present with their stubborn eccentricities. Not co-incidentally all the three path-breaking characters that Mr. Bachchan has played in Balki's films so far -- in "Cheeni Kum" and "Paa" -- have been relentlessly stubborn characters. Going many steps ahead of his vain chef's character in "Cheeni Kum" and the arrogant progeric boy-man in "Paa", Big B in "Shamitabh" is a raging volcano of ill-tempered defiance.

Early in the narrative we are told (in that mesmerising voice that plays the main lead in the plot) that once upon a time, The Voice had been rejected by not just the film industry but all popular mediums. This, as any Bachchan fan would tell you, is a fact from the superstar's real life.

Balki is a Bachchan fan and a director. He picks out many real-life incidents and character-traits from Mr. Bachchan's life (for instance, that smirking monologue about why we choose ape Hollywood by calling our film industry 'Bollywood') to create a character whose splendid surliness sweeps across the plot's canvas, creating a man who has never quite come to terms with his failure and now suddenly gets one last chance to be famous as a wannabe superstar's voice.

It's a compelling premise transported to illuminating heights by the writer-director's insight into human nature. Balki never flinches from looking at the darker zones of human nature. Yet, he likes to keep the surface amiable, gentle and very viewer-friendly. His cinematographic ally P.C. Sreeram paints an almost Shakespearean autumnal ruin around Mr. Bachchan's character.

Wisely, the colour palette gets more eye-catching and vibrant when the camera is around Dhanush and Akshara, the wannabe star from rural Maharashtra who goes on to become, ahem, the first Marathi superstar of Bollywood.

The journey is mapped with immense warmth and tenderness. The child-actor who plays Dhanush's film-crazy character in the prologue is so in-character that you wonder if Balki stole him away from a nearby movie theatre.

Dhanush plays the mute star-aspirant with great understanding. His role gets progressively complex as his on-screen persona must mesh with the Bachchan baritone in a way where the merger looks convincing. Dhanush manages to pull the character, into the realm of the utterly believable.

The chemistry between the alcohol-laden Voice and the dream-drenched face is the film's focal point. Dhanush's rapport with Akshara's character never quite gets there, partly because she's a little too young and inexperienced-looking for the part, though nonetheless a prized discovery. The growing romantic fondness between the two doesn't get your attention. Neither do some of the songs, specially the romantic number where the commode plays a pivotal role. Ilayaraja's background score is far more evocative than the songs which strive to be 'cool' rather than compelling.

But you're really not listening. Not to the songs. Not to the characters. But to the sound of their aching arching hearts reaching into a space beyond what god and technology have created for them.

Nothing prepares you for this astonishing film. Its absolutely original plot and spellbinding aesthetics make it compulsive viewing. The delicacy and dynamism of structure and movement are indicative of Balki's mastery of the medium.

"Shamitabh" is not just a homage to the great Bachchan baritone. It is also a magnificent ode to the theme of human mortality.

Mr. Bachchan rages and towers over the proceedings as only he can. Is there no end to his brilliancy? Dhanush's synchronicity with the Big B, so crucial to the plot, proves him to be an actor of remarkable resources. Thankfully, like Balki, Dhanush is a Big B fan later, an honest artiste first.

Akshara Haasan holds her own between the two seething squabbling co-stars, though the sequence where she chastises both the men in a kindergarten class falls pretty flat. Not her fault. Akshara never allows us to know this is her first.
