'Hawaizaada' declared tax free in UP

Filmmaker Vibhu Puri's directorial debut film "Hawaizaada", which will hit the screens Friday, has been declared tax free in Uttar Pradesh.

"We are extremely happy to receive the tax free grant. This will ensure that the film reaches out to a much larger audience base," Sanjeev Lamba, CEO, Reliance Entertainment, said in a statement.

"The achievements of Shivkar Talpade are largely undocumented and even uncredited. This film is our attempt to highlight one of his biggest achievements of flying the first plane ever at Chowpatty, Mumbai in 1895. We are glad the authorities agreed with us on making the film available as tax free and we hope to follow suit in other states," he added.

Presented by Reliance Entertainment, "Hawaizaada" is inspired from the life and works of Shivkar Talpade who flew the first ever unmanned plane eight years before the Wright Brothers.

Directed by Vibhu Puri, the film features Ayushmann Khurrana, Pallavi Sharda, Mithun Chakraborty among others.

The film is slated for a global release Jan 30.

'Hawaizaada': A dreamlike masterpiece about a dreamer(IANS Movie Review, Rating: ****1/2)

$

Film: "Hawaizaada"; Cast: Mithun Chakraborty, Ayushmann Khurrana, Pallavi Sharda, Naman Jain, Jayant Kriplani, Natasha Sinha; Director: Vibhu Virender Puri; Rating: ****1/2

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to fly? Then see "Hawaizaada", a film that soars into the skies with its overweening ambitions and miraculously manages to stay airborne as it chronicles the life a man who wanted to fly.

Debutant director Vibhu Puri's very accomplished film, a tribute to the scientist who apparently manned the first aircraft that civilizations has ever flown, is a stunning feast of visual splendour, compounded with a script that's tightly and judiciously written to accentuate the audacity and eccentricity of people who can float in the future.

Straightaway it can be said with great pride that Vibhu Puri's debut is a homage to the art and visual aesthetics of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Every frame is reminiscent of several Bhansali creations, notably "Devdas" and "Saawariya", the former for the theme of unfulfilled love (with Khurana's capricious love interest Pallavi Sharda forming a fusion of Paro and Chandramukhi's two-layered character from Devdas) and the latter for the rich bold use of flamboyant colours to highlight the heightened opera-styled emotions.

"Hawaizaada" attempts an almost-impossible marriage of a visual splendour with emotional surrender. The characters, be it the whimsical aimless Shivkar Talpade or his kooky mentor Shastry , or the Britishers who scowl at any attempt by Shastry and Talpade to create inventional history....these are people who don't believe in holding back emotions. When they feel show. Period.

The year is 1895. The possibilities of recreating that era in present times seems far-fetched and unlikely. Thanks to Puri's art directors(Subrata Chakraborty0, Amit Ray), music composers(Vishal Bhardwaj pitches in with a zestful lavni filmed on the gorgeous Sharda) and most specially his incredibly gifted camera-person Savita Singh(who happens to be Puri's wife), the director has constructed a world as unthinkable on paper as the theory of flying a plane must have seemed to Talpade's contemporaries.

Thank God for the dreamers, back then and now.

"Hawaizaada" is a film with tempestuous ambitions. Co-writers Vibhu Puri and Saurabh R Bhave use Talpade's dream of flying as a metaphor for anyone from any era who has dreamt of breaking free. The pronounced but Amuted metaphor is extended into Talpade's extend family of repressed character, again very Devdas-like in its operatic structure. There is the growling father(Jayant Kripalani), tightlipped mother(Natasha Sinha), smirking brother(Mehul Kajaria), dominated bhabhi(Priyanka Sethia)....They all long to ,well, fly .

Encircling this wide arc of wannabe fliers who are piloted into the epic plot by Talpade's navigational dreams, couldn't be an easy task. Vibhu Puri manages the seemingly impossible maneuvering skilfully joyously and playfully through lives in an era when oppression was a pre-condition.

Soaring on a dream, "Hawaizaada" transports us into an enchanting world of a dream-reality where anything can happen. Birds can sing, humanbeing can fly....whatever! Fuelling the impossible dream is the central performance by Ayushmann Khurrana. He breathes animated life into Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, the audacious 19th century scientist who dared to fly. Khurrana plays Talpade as a trippy dreamer, a Devdas drunk on his dreams.

Mithun Chakraborty as Talpade's mentor is goofy eccentric and endearing. This is the actor's most effective performance in years. As for Pallavi Sharda, though admittedly that well-toned gym-produced physique doesn't jell with the film's periodicity, she is a revelation doing an amalgamation of Paro and Chandramukhi from Devdas.Besharam is forgotten and forgiven.

Going back in time is never an easy task in cinema. Many have failed to court periodicity convincingly. "Hawaizaada" gets away with its flight into the mind of the man who dared to fly. This miniature masterpiece leaves us exhilarated and exultant. Thank God for the dreamers, past and present.

Thank you, Shivkar Bapuji Talpade. Thank you, Vibhu Puri.

I exercise six days a week: Anil Kapoor

$

Actor-filmmaker Anil Kapoor says he exercises six days a week and recalls the time when he travelled to the location shooting of his 2005 film "My Wife's Murder" on his bicycle.

The 58-year-old was here along with Vijay Sampla, union minister of state for social justice and empowerment, to inaugurate the International Bicycle and Fitness Expo (IBFE) organised at Pragati Maidan Thursday.

Anil, who apparently spends more time cycling than travelling in his car, elaborated on his passion for cycling and fitness.

"I exercise six days a week and whatever I eat or put inside my system, I try to take it out through exercise.

"I have always been passionate about cycling. I have been cycling since my childhood. A cycle not only gets you from one place to another, but it also helps to maintain the fitness level. Since the past eight or nine years, I have been cycling to keep myself fit. Even though I own big cars, I spend more time cycling than I spend in my car," Anil told reporters.

Speaking about his role as a lower middle class husband in "My Wife's Murder", Anil said he cycled his way to the shooting so that he can remain in his character.

"I played a lower middle class person in the film. So I thought 'if I go to the shooting in a luxury car, I will not be in my character'. So, I used to travel to the shooting on my bicycle," he said.

The relentless actor wasn't afraid of the long cycling trip and used to bathe at the sets after his cycling workout.

"The location was one and a half hours away by car but I used to reach in one hour and 15 minutes by my bicycle. I used to shower at the location and then proceed with the shooting. During the entire course of shooting for the film, I followed the same routine.

"Travelling by a bicycle saves the time that you would spend in a gym to remain fit. I would also like to request Sampla sir to encourage cycling -- not only in the cities but also in small towns and villages," said Anil.

The three-day expo, which aims to promote fitness and cycling, will conclude Saturday and is being attended by 50 exhibitors from Europe, China, Japan and Taiwan.

Films don't need controversies to get mileage: Kay Kay Menon

Versatile actor Kay Kay Menon, whose next movie "Rahasya" is in the eye of storm for reportedly being based on the infamous Aarushi Talwar murder case, says movies do not need the push of a controversy to get an audience.

Asked if pre-release controversies help a film in any way, on this, Kay Kay told IANS: "I think that's a very wrong thought. I don't think a film needs controversy to get mileage. A film should run on its own merit."

"If your film is genuinely good, then it will be liked by the audience," he added.

The Bombay High Court recently rejected a petition filed by dentist couple Nupur and Rajesh Talwar, who had sought a stop on the release of "Rahasya", said to based on the murder of their daughter Arushi and domestic help Hemraj.

Talking about the film, Menon said: "The Aarushi Talwar murder case was famous, so people are comparing it. It's a fictional story. This story has got nothing to do with Aarushi murder case."

Directed by Manish Gupta, "Rahasya" also features Tisca Chopra and Ashish Vidyarthi.

Intimate scenes weren't difficult: 'Khamoshiyan' actress

$

0

Actress Sapna Pabbi, who is making her Bollywood debut with Vishesh Films’ “Khamoshiyan”, says intimate scenes in the film were not difficult for her to pull off, and instead, it was the emotional scenes which were challenging.

The supernatural erotica, which has abundant steamy and bold scenes, features Sapna in a lead role as a conniving seductress Meera, and Ali Fazal as Kabir, a writer in search of a story. Gurmeet Choudhary plays Meera's husband Jaidev in the film.

“Intimate scenes were not difficult. The difficult scenes for me in the film were the heavy emotional ones,” Sapna told IANS in an interview.

“There were times when I cried all day on set. I couldn't stop crying, it was a very emotionally heavy scene I had done with Gurmeet one day. It was really difficult for me to snap out of Meera's character,” she added.

Sapna, who is known for her role as Kiran Rathod in espionage drama TV series "24", finds her journey from TV to Bollywood “unreal”.

“It was because of '24' that I got 'Khamoshiyan' and a lot of other things also. It was four months after '24' that I signed my first film. It's been unreal. I've got great friends in Mumbai. I couldn't have asked for a better journey,” said the 24-year-old Bollywood debutante.

Speaking about her attachment with the film, which released Friday, she said: “'Khamoshiyan' is close to my heart. I'm very overwhelmed and the film has been a great gift to me.”

Her dark and mysterious character in the film has a lot of secrets and is “very complex”.

“Meera is a very complex character. She has a lot of different layers and shades to her personality. She carries a lot of dark secrets from her past. She likes to play mind games and she is very dark and mysterious,” she said.

Asked if she would still want to work for TV, having already made a Bollywood breakthrough, she said she wouldn't mind and would be happy to “break the barrier” between Bollywood and TV.

“In Hollywood, everybody acts in films and then they act for TV, so I feel somebody has to break that barrier in Bollywood.

“Acting is acting, no matter where you do it, whatever the medium may be. I hope Bollywood and the Indian TV industry break that ice. It'd be nice to see more filmy faces on TV,” she said.

Sapna also expressed her fascination of veteran actress Rekha and her talent.

“The roles with more depth attract me. I'm in love with roles that Rekha ma'am has pulled off in the past. 'Khoon Bhari Maang' is my favourite film and Rekha ma'am is my favourite actress.

“The great thing about her is that she used to stand out in the scenes all the time and she still does. I'd love to do roles that have more personality to them rather than the look on screen,” she said.

Although she is a “huge fan” of superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Sapna also appreciates Manoj Bajpayee's work.

“I'm a huge Shah Rukh Khan fan. I've watched his films more than anybody else's. And, I'm a huge fan of Manoj Bajpayee too,” she said.

'Rahasya' - gripping, edge-of-the-seat whodunit (IANS Movie Review, Rating: ***1/2)

$
0
0

Film: "Rahasya"; Cast: Kay Kay Menon, Tisca Chopra, Ashish Vidyarthi, Ashwini Kalsekar and Mita Vashisht; Director: Manish Gupta; Rating: *** ½

Half of the star-rating extra for the sheer abundance of acting talent that Manish Gupta’s stylish confidently-shot whodunit throws forward, with Kay Kay Menon helming the murder mystery as an walnut-chomping CBI officer on the trail of the murder of a young girl, who is killed in her swanky home while her doctor-father was drunk in the next room.

No no no...don’t go away! This is not the tragic Arushi Talwar murder revisited and sensationalised on celluloid. Director Manish Gupta, who has earlier made a strong but crude film on ragging, "Hostel", keeps the proceedings on an even keel. Taking the Talwar tragedy as a take-off point, writer-director Gupta has woven an intricate whodunit with enough twists and turns to keep us guessing about the murderer’s identity till the very end.

The killer’s identity, when revealed, is not entirely unexpected but nonetheless shocking and more importantly, convincing.

Whodunits in Bollywood frequently flounder in their end-game. Not "Rahasya". Gupta keeps the narrative going in a steady flow and at a perky pace. The shots are cut deftly. Editor Suresh Pai gives the wide array of characters ample room to breathe but never allows them to overstay their welcome.

This suspense here largely depends on the efficacy of the actors. And here’s where "Rahasya" really scores. Kay Kay Menon as the wry investigative officer fighting off his wife’s persistent demands to get corrupt, brings a tremendous engagingess to his character. His character Sunil Paraskar is a man who survives the hardships of a thankless job by cracking cruel jokes about himself and others.

There is a sequence where a character subtly tries to offer monetary gratification to Paraskar.

“You aren’t trying to bribe me by any chance are you,” Kay Kay’s eyebrows arch menacingly. When the temptation is hurriedly pulled back, he growls: “Ah, a miscommunication.”

Such moments of delectable humour should have been present more frequently. Largely, "Rahasya" opts for an exaggerated ambience, mood and treatment. The background music by Ranjit Barot is excellently subdued, more suggestive than illustrative. But the actors’ voices are over-dubbed and over-punctuated.

Particularly grating on the nervous system is that wonderful actress Ashwini Kalsekar, who as the dead girl’s nanny, whines, sobs, moans and wails almost throughout the film.

We almost wish for one more murder to happen.

But the actors nonetheless save the day. Besides Kay Kay, who is spectacularly subtle, Tisca Chopra as the dead girl’s mother and a new actor Nimai Bali as a corruptible cop, emerge triumphant. Mita Vashisht as a smouldering mysterious television actress in backless cholis attempts to be what was once described as the femme fatale. Given her choice of lover for the film, Ms Vashisht ends up as all smoke with no fire.

Admirably, the director shoots Mumbai’s underbelly -- the chawls, narrow lanes, toilets and local trains -- with great affection. Faroukh Mistry’s camera roams the city restlessly. The long shots of the city waking from uneasy slumber every morning merge into the microscopic view of the traumatised family.

This is a dark, desperate, sinister, gutsy and gripping thriller which may not tilt you to the edge of the seat. But you do want to know who killed the teenaged girl Ayesha Mahajan.

The answer won’t please you for sure.

Messy lives, sordid relationships, betrayal and revenge run through the veins of the film. Barbara Cartland would have frowned. But Agatha Christie would have assuredly approved.

'Khamoshiyan' - full of moronic mumbo-jumbo (IANS Movie Review, Rating: **)

$
0
0

Film: "Khamoshiyan"; Cast: Sapna Pabbi, Ali Fazal and Gurmeet Choudhary; Director: Karan Darra; Rating: **

The biggest puzzle in the public domain, besides the question, "Why US President Obama chose to mouth Shah Rukh Khan’s lines from "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'?" is, "Why does a sensible intelligent man like Vikram Bhatt chose to write such stupid shiver givers?"

"Khamoshiyan" makes you shiver. But not in fear. It just makes you shake in embarrassment for all the ghosts and spirits who are so royally snubbed and insulted by such travesties of terror. Maybe the spiritual world could sue for defamation. And then there should be an added penalty for wasting three talented young hopeful actors looking for a break.

All "Khamoshiyan" gives them is a pathetic plot where creaky doors and spooky apparitions get more playing time than the actors who have to look scared and shattered when they are probably laughing behind the camera wondering who in this day and age believes in such moronic mumbo-jumbo.

Not the progressive Mahesh Bhatt for sure. Why Mr.Bhatt who has made some of the most pathbreaking films in recent times would choose to back something so shrouded in the raga of the regressive is beyond comprehension.

But all is not lost. There is a brand new version in this fearful film of the Khemchand Prakash-composed classic "Aayega aanewala", which launched the career of Lata Mangeshkar as the voice of the nation.

I'm not too sure what the Bhatts (brothers Mahesh and Mukesh and their protege Vikram) mean to achieve by mocking the melody from the film "Mahal" in this way. Whatever their motive, the new version of "Aayega aanewala" only serves to remind us how far the ghost drama has strayed from its original purpose of creating a world where the tenable and attainable cross one another’s world in pursuit of love and fulfilment.

In "Khamoshiyan", the protagonists snub the spirit and focus on the body. Debutant Sapna Pabbi, playing a hotel receptionist with a serious face twitch and body itch, leads both the men not so gently in bedded perdition. We see Sapna and Ali Fazal kissing, writhing, moaning and...umm...erupting. We see Sapna and Gurmeet Choudhary kissing, writhing....you get the picture? Same-to-same.

Sex never looked more boring.

These are three bodies with no claim to a soul, grappling with a script in a power-piqued film that mocks every sensible rule of filmmaking. All the fearsome threesome does is make out in different locations and positions. Maybe they thought they were shooting for a condom ad. The characters certainly need protection....From the onslaught of idiocy that assails them from every nook of this misguided thriller, more idiotic than erotic, with a female protagonist who is more neurotic than enigmatic.

By the time we come to the....ahem....climax, we are past caring about these three abandoned souls. To their credit, the three actors manage to look appealing in spite of their unsavoury circumstances.

Ali Fazal playing a writer with a block tries to enjoy the suffering. Somewhere you feel the character’s pain has been superseded by the actor’s agony. Sapna Pabbi has a gamine-like charm which this film tries to turn into a pub-house of horny antics. Better luck next time, Sapna.

Pabbi is not just miscast, she is mess-cast.

As for debutant Gurmeet Choudhary, he definitely has a screen presence. One wishes he had chosen for his film debut a script that respected the audiences’ intelligence and tolerance level.

Gandhi's Song: New documentary on centuries-old bhajan

$
0
0

A nearly six-centuries-old song written by Gujarat's most revered poet-philosopher Narsinh Mehta and made by Mahatma Gandhi as his life's guiding force is now a subject of an upcoming documentary.

The documentary titled "Gandhi's Song", being written and directed by Chicago-based journalist and writer Mayank Chhaya, begins production in the next couple of weeks with location shooting in Junagadh and elsewhere in Gujarat where Mehta spent his life creating some of the most popular metaphysical ruminations addressed to Krishna.

"Generations of Indians since Gandhi's assassination on this day sixty seven years ago have grown up thinking that 'Vaishnav Jan To' was written by him. This is a remarkable example of the creation being more enduring than the creator. This particular bhajan is unique in the sense that it remains so current in its moral underpinnings about what constitutes a civilized human being," Chhaya told IANS.

"Gandhi's Song" will be a full-length documentary feature with a clear focus on bringing Mehta and his profound philosophy about the universe to the attention of global audiences. Mehta, who by most widely accepted consensus lived between 1414 and 1481, was in a sense unwitting figure in India's great Bhakti Movement, which flourished organically throughout the country during medieval times between 800 and 1700 CE.
In the tradition of the figures of the Bhakti Movement of the time, Mehta was also a pioneering social reformer who used the power of his poetry to break down rigid caste and class barriers.

"Vaishnav Jan To, which is easily among the most widely sung songs in the world, was typical of Mehta's deceptively simple but profound worldview. Each verse essentially defines what kind of moral standards should drive humans. I would argue that the bhajan in many ways shaped Gandhi's larger socio-cultural view that was at the heart of the country's freedom movement. It is any poet's envy that a creation not only lasts centuries but continues to retain its modernity," Chhaya says.

Although "Gandhi's Song" is pegged on "Vaishnav Jan To" because of its global recognition, the documentary will dwell on Mehta as a poet, reformer and figure who defied constricting social norms and worked all his life to establish societal equity among people divided by castes.

"When Prime Minister Narendra Modi was feted at the Maidson Square Garden, violin maestro L. Subramaniam and his singer wife performed a re-composed version of 'Vaishnav Jan To'. No one mentioned that it was written by Narsinh Mehta. I want to correct that huge omission although knowing his philosophy it wouldn't have mattered to Mehta one bit," Chhaya says.

If the rumours turn out to be true, Shetty would have managed a lead cast that's been adored over the years in films like "Karan Arjun", "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham..." and "My Name Is Khan".

Meanwhile, Shetty is busy gearing up for another exciting project next month -- "Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 6", which goes on air on Colors Feb 7 with 14 celebrity contestants.

Amit Sharma worked with Sonakshi Sinha and Arjun Kapoor in his directorial debut "Tevar" this year. Now, the director is "in talks" with Abhishek Bachchan for his next project.

When about the reports of him directing Abhishek in his next, Sharma told IANS: "He is a very good friend of mine and yes, we were in talks for a film... but nothing has materialised yet."

If one goes by reports, the film is said to be an action movie.

Whether Abhishek will bag the project or not is still uncertain, but he already has "Hera Pheri 3" in his kitty.
