We are not Congress stooges: Censor Board's Ira Bhaskar

0
0

Academician Ira Bhaskar, one of the 10 members to quit the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) following chairperson Leela Samson's resignation, says they are "not Congress stooges" and were never "rebels without a cause".

A proof, she says, is the December 2013 letter in which the board had stated to the then Information and Broadcasting minister, their concerns about the "difficulties and obstacles" to the realisation of their goals.

Jaitley in a Facebook post titled "Rebels Without a Cause" Saturday slammed the “alleged interference by the government and corruption in the (censor) board” cited by Samson and other members.

He even said they were all “UPA appointees” and if there’s any corruption, they “have themselves to blame”.

But Bhaskar, a professor of Cinema Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University here, says that the matter for them is not about the BJP or the Congress.

"It's not about the party, the bureaucrats or the ministers. It is about the health of the CBFC -- the film certification process and by extension social interests as well."

"We are not Congress stooges, all of us who have resigned. We are academicians, professionals and film critics, and we have been trying to make efforts to get the ministry to pay attention to our attempts to make film certification a transparent and efficient process," Bhaskar told IANS in an interview.

“This would help not only the film industry, but all stakeholders involved. We continued attempting to make efforts towards the realisation of our vision, and hoped that despite the fact that our term was over in April 2014, and we were on extension, we would be able to work towards our goals," Bhaskar said.

"The matter has got nothing to do with the BJP or Congress. Even when the Congress was in power rule, it was the same."

Apart from Bhaskar, Lora Prabhu, Pankaj Sharma, Rajeev Masand, Sekharbabu Kancherla, Shaji N. Karun, Shubhra Gupta, T.G. Thyagarajan, Mamang Dai and Arundhati Nag have put in their papers via a letter to the ministry. M.K. Raina and Anjum Rajabali resigned earlier.

Samson was appointed chairperson April 1, 2011, and the board members were appointed at the end of April the same year.

No board meeting has taken place for the last one year since January 2014 and Jaitley has said that Samson, as chairperson, should have convened the meetings, and it is not for the minister or secretary to do it.

But Bhaskar said that when Samson asked the CBFC CEOs -- first Rakesh Kumar and then Shravan Kumar -- to organise the board meetings, she was initially told in April 2014 that the government is going to change and it would be possible only after the elections. Subsequent demands by Samson for board meetings were met by a response that there was a lack of funds.

Bhaskar also said that both Shravan Kumar, who was appointed by Prakash Javadekar as interim CBFC CEO after former CEO Rakesh Kumar was arrested on bribery charges, and before his arrest Rakesh Kumar himself, had stopped reporting to Samson.

"If the ministry keeps filling the CBFC with their people and coterie, it will largely affect the film certification process, the film industry, and ultimately the interests of society itself," Bhaskar told IANS.

She said the system that exists for film certification, is "good", but the government needs to support the CBFC as an autonomous body, whose decisions on certification must be upheld.

Bhaskar even wants the current government to take a dekko at their December 2013 letter to the then minister as well as the Mudgal Committee Report, which earlier in 2013 aimed to address what ails the process of film certification. But in vain.

"People just don't want anything to change. The suggestions for changes in the Cinematograph Act of 1952 have not been been presented to parliament as yet," she said.

Bhaskar says instead of playing the blame game, the people calling the shots must look at their earlier letter to the minister for “some strong suggestions on rehauling the systems of the functioning of the CBFC...and suggestions for strengthening both the freedom of expression of filmmakers, and their social responsibility".

“After all, during our tenure, we have had successes with film certification and have also had some strong judgments from the Supreme Court and the high court supporting artists’ freedom of expression.”

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana says he's ready to go back to his roots -- the small screen -- but only for a non-fiction show which is "interesting".

The "Vicky Donor" actor, who has done his fair share of anchoring on the 'idiot box', told IANS: "I started my career on television. I was an anchor on TV. If given a choice, I would be excited to do a non-fiction show on TV, but it has to be interesting."

He feels the line between TV and films has blurred, as "all superstars are anchors" these days.

"So if I get an out-of-the-box show to anchor, I will do it," he added.

Ayushmann is currently busy promoting his forthcoming film "Hawaizaada" in which he will be seen playing a Maharashtrian character.

Asked how comfortable he is talking in Marathi, he said: "It's been six years in Mumbai and you should know the language of where you work.

"In six years, I can understand Marathi. I am not fluent in Marathi, but I'm good with the accent. In my film you will not realise that a non-Maharashtrian is speaking Marathi."

Directed by Vibhu Puri, "Hawaizaada" also features Pallavi Sharda.

MSG row: Prohibitory orders issued in Haryana town

Authorities in Haryana's Sirsa district Monday issued prohibitory orders in certain areas of Sirsa town in view of tension between the Sikh community and Dera Sacha Sauda sect followers over the release of controversial movie "MSG (Messenger of God)".

The ban on assembly of five or more people at one place was imposed in view of tension building up after Sikh groups sought a ban on screening of the movie, which stars sect chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

Sikh groups tried to take out a protest march in Sirsa town Monday.

The sect headquarters is located close to Sirsa town and thousands of sect followers live in the town and surrounding areas.

The opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) in Haryana has been holding protests against the movie.

The Punjab government Saturday announced a ban on the film's screening in the state.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said Monday said that the ban was imposed following an advisory from central agencies that the movie could lead to law and order problem.

"MSG" was to be released on Jan 16 but it did not get clearance from the censor board in time. The new date of release of the movie has not been finalised yet.

The sect claims that the movie is not against any religion, group or people and was only highlighting social evils.

Composer Jeet Ganguly, who has created tunes for films like "Aashiqui 2", "Youngistaan" and the forthcoming "Khamoshiyan", says filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt is his "godfather", who gave him a "rebirth" in the Hindi music industry.

Ganguly had worked for a song in the film "Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai" and then came back into the music industry with "Aashiqui 2", which was produced by Bhatt's Vishesh Films.

"I came back to the Mumbai music industry after 10 years. My godfather is Mukesh-ji, he brought me back. He has given me a rebirth," Ganguly told IANS in an interview.

Speaking about his musical inspiration and childhood, the composer said: "My childhood was full of Salil Chowdhary, R.D. Burman and Madan Mohan sahab. My father used to play with them and I used to play my guitar on their notations. That is where I got my inspiration from."

Ganguly, who has composed music along with Ankit Tiwari for the forthcoming film "Khamoshiyan", praised Arijit Singh for his voice in the title track.

"Arijit's rendition of the song and his flawless singing is the USP of the track. When he heard the title track, he liked it a lot.

"Arijit took three or four hours to record the song. I had told him that I want a fresh tonal quality for the song and there has to be innocence. He followed the same and did an excellent job," Ganguly added.

The supernatural erotica, which is the directorial debut of Karan Darra, stars Gurmeet Choudhary, Sapna Pabbi and Ali Fazal. The film will hit theatres Jan 30.

Meanwhile, Ganguly is busy composing music for upcoming films like "Phir Se", "Mr. X" and "Hamari Adhuri Kahani".

Pahlaj Nihalani appointed new Censor Board chairperson

Four days after Leela Samson quit, film producer Pahlaj Nihalani, younger brother of filmmaker Govind Nihalani, was Monday appointed the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), along with nine new members.

Nihalani has produced films like "Shola Aur Shabnam" and "Andaz" in the past, and is a former president of the Association of Motion Picture and Television Programme Producers.

"The Central Government is pleased to appoint Pahlaj Nihalani as Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification in an honorary capacity from Jan 19, 2015 for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier," read a statement from the ministry of information and broadcasting.

The nine members appointed with immediate effect include Mihir Bhuta, Syed Abdul Bari, Ramesh Patange, George Baker, Chandra Prakash Dwivedi, Jeevitha, Vani Tripathi Tikoo, S. Ve Shekhar and Ashoke Pandit.

The decision comes just days after Samson resigned as CBFC chairperson, citing interference, coercion and corruption of panel members.

CBFC is a statutory body under the ministry of information and broadcasting. It regulates the public exhibition of films under the provisions of the Cinematograph Act 1952.

Samson, an acclaimed Bharatnatyam dancer, was appointed its chair in 2011, and she and her members were continuing on interim extensions.

Following her, 10 of the Censor Board's members -- Ira Bhaskar, Lora Prabhu, Pankaj Sharma, Rajeev Masand, Sekharbabu Kancherla, Shaji N. Karun, Shubhra Gupta, T.G. Thyagarajan, Mamang Dai and Arundhati Nag - also put in their papers via a letter to the ministry, citing the "cavalier and dismissive manner" in which the board is treated by the government. M.K. Raina and Anjum Rajabali had resigned from the board earlier itself.

The breaking point regarding their resignation is said to be the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal's (FCAT) green signal to the release of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's controversial film "MSG - The Messenger of God" despite the decision of the CBFC to deny clearance to the film.

'I' a big boost to Amy Jackson's career

0
0

The success of Vikram-starrer Tamil romantic-thriller "I" has cemented Amy Jackson's career in southern filmdom to the extent that producers are now making a beeline to cast her.

With two big projects ready to kick off, Amy has come a long way since her debut in 2010 Tamil romantic-drama "Madraspattinam".

"Amy already has a film with Udhayanidhi Stalin and Dhanush ready to go on floors. She has also been approached two big-budget projects, one each in Tamil as well as Telugu. She's on the verge of signing the dotted lines," a source close to Amy told IANS.

On Wednesday, Amy's yet-untitled Tamil project with Udhayanidhi is going on floors.

"The film will portray Amy as a village belle, contrary to all the glamorous roles she's played so far. It will be interesting to see how audiences accept her in a different role," film's director Thirukumaran told IANS.

Amy will next team up with Dhanush for another Tamil film, which will be directed by Velraj.

Velraj and Dhanush previously collaborated for 2014's big hit "Vela Illa Pattathari".

Last year, Amy made her Telugu film debut opposite Ram Charan in "Yevadu".

"She was offered a few projects post 'Yevadu', but she couldn't sign them due to 'I'. She's expected to announce about her next film in the language soon," the source added.
