Rajinikanth files caveat application in 'Lingaa' case

Superstar Rajinikanth Monday filed a caveat application here to prevent the Madras High Court bench from passing any interim order in the "Lingaa" case without hearing his stand.

He filed the application anticipating a writ appeal by aspiring filmmaker K.R. Ravi Rathinam, who had alleged the makers of "Lingaa" of stealing his script. This was after the refusal of a single judge to order a probe into the alleged theft.

On Dec 3, dismissing the case, Justice M. Venugopal advised the petitioner to initiate civil or criminal proceedings instead of filing a writ petition since this was a private dispute.

Rajinikanth's counsel Sanjay Ramaswamy will argue the case Wednesday before the film's release Friday.

Directed by K.S. Ravi Kumar, "Lingaa" is said to be about the construction of Mullaiperiyar dam.

RGV's next based on a chapter from 'Rakht Charitra'

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma's next Telugu film "Spot" will be based on a chapter from his own 2010 film "Rakht Charitra".

On his YouTube page, RGV revealed in a video that "Spot" is a Telugu colloquial term used for murder plan by factionists.

"I will never forget the incidents I came across and the people I met during the making of 'Rakht Charitra'. But I couldn't do even 10 percent justice to whatever I encountered in both parts of 'Rakht Charitra' due to several reasons," he said in the video.

RGV's "Rakht Charitra" is a biopic based on the life of factionist-turned-politician Paritala Ravi.

"Just like the Mahabharat, 'Rakht Charitra' too has many chapters. One such chapter is the killing of Obul Reddy by Paritala Ravi's henchmen. I've decided to turn that chapter into a film called 'Spot'," he said.

He added that "Spot" will throw light on the reasons and planning behind Reddy's murder in broad daylight in an apartment in Hyderabad.

"Obul Reddy's killing that shook the entire state Hyderabad took place in 1996 in Masab Tank. I've learnt about everything behind this murder from the people who were involved in it recently. The details gave me goosebumps," Varma said.

RGV is yet to finalise the cast for the film, which is likely to go on floors soon.

HC asks censor board to relook 'En Dino Muzaffarnagar's case

0

The Delhi High Court Tuesday asked the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to review the documentary film "En Dino Muzaffarnagar" again and pass its order.

Its maker Meera Chaudhary had filed a plea challenging the CBFC's refusal to grant it a certificate on the grounds that the film has the potential of creating communal disharmony.

Justice Vibhu Bakhru asked the board to watch the documentary again and pass an order with reasons. The court remanded back the matter to CBFC, Kolkata, with a direction that the matter should be disposed of within four weeks.

The board shall also has to furnish reasons for whatever decision it takes - if it feels that the movie is worth certifiable by certain excisions, then the board should mention the part of the documentary with reasons, said the court.

If the board feels that the entire movie is objectionable then also it should substantiate it with reasons, said the court, adding that the members of the board would be different this time.

During the hearing, advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for Chaudhary, told the court that the film was denied a certificate "arbitrarily" with the panel saying it could create communal disturbances.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Sanjay Jain appearing for government told the court that the film is biased and allowing its screening may lead to riots.

Chaudhury's plea challenged the CBFC's June 30 order denying a certificate of unrestricted viewing of the film and the July 19 Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) order upholding it.

The CBFC or the FCAT fail to provide a cogent reasoning for refusal to grant certification of the film, argued Bhushan.

"The order by the FCAT and CBFC suffers from malafide, non-application of mind and runs counter to the fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under article 19(1)(a) of the constitution and the law laid down by the Supreme Court in plethora of cases," said the plea.

Chaudhary's plea said the main objective of the film is to make people aware of the politics behind the riots and to create the right perception, to create dialogue and debate on the issues to be highlighted in the documentary among journalists, activists and political classes.

"It will help in bringing peace and harmony between Hindu and Muslim community, because the film will clear the doubts and suspicions in the minds of both the communities regarding the real reasons behind the riots," it added.

A 1,000 weeks on, DDLJ's romance with Bollywood lovers continues

0
0

It tugged at the heartstrings of the young, middle-aged and the old alike when it released way back in 1995. Even a thousand weeks after its run at the box office, Shah Rukh Khan-starrer romantic drama "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (DDLJ) continues to be "cherished" by youths, who consider it an "ideal love story".

When the film, debut-directed by Aditya Chopra, released Oct 20, 1995, it came as a refreshing change as well as a clutter breaking and trend-making entertainer with all ingredients of a Bollywood masala potboiler -- love, romance, comedy, action, melodrama, thrills, songs and dance -- put together cohesively to tell a story of the victory of true love.

DDLJ has a simple story -- a fun loving London-bred Punjabi boy Raj meets an NRI simpleton Simran (Kajol) during an European holiday. Love blossoms between them, but winning over the girl's conservative family is not a cakewalk for the hero, who then makes every effort to take his 'dulhania' (bride) with him.

Such was the film's effect that most young girls felt love was all about 'finding their Raj', boys idolised SRK's ways of fighting his way to get the love of his life, while the picture perfect family scenes reflected the fun and frolic of a typical Punjabi household -- whether it was Amrish Puri's strict yet loving father's character, Farida Jalal's emotional motherly act or Anupam Kher's goofy portrayal of the boy's 'Pops'.

Muskan Agarwal, a 21-year-old, says "everything about the movie rocks".

"Its filmy dialogues, beautiful outdoor shooting locales to superhit songs...it's great that the movie is completing 1,000 weeks. They should still make movies like DDLJ," said the Bollywood fanatic.

The film's songs like "Tujhe dekha toh ye jaana sanam", "Mehndi lagaa ke rakhna", "Ruk ja oh dil deewane" and "Mere khwabon mein jo aaye" continue to be played even today.

For 22-year-old Ranjeet Rajotia, the chemistry shared by SRK and Kajol -- one of Bollywood's best onscreen couples -- in DDLJ, surpasses their pairing in all their other films.

"SRK and Kajol have worked together in a lot of blockbusters but DDLJ will always be recognised as their best work till date," Ranjeet said about the film, which won 10 Filmfare Awards, including best film, best actor, best actress and best director at the 1996 edition of the ceremony.

Produced by the late Yash Chopra, the film this year started its 20th year of uninterrupted run at the iconic Maratha Mandir cinema hall in Mumbai and it now holds the record of the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema.

While the youngsters have already seen the film enough times, watching it on the day it completes its 1,000 weeks is special in its own way for them.

"Can't wait to watch 'DDLJ' at Maratha Mandir. I really want to blow whistles when SRK fights on screen and hoot when Kajol turns around during the famous 'palat' moment," said Meghna Mathur, who was perhaps only a year old when the movie released.

The theatre is fully booked for the special milestone screening, Manoj Desai, managing director, Maratha Mandir, told IANS.

DDLJ even appealed to those who aren't particularly fond of Bollywood entertainers and prefer sci-fi Hollywood movies.

Said Gopal Rathore: "I'm not into Bollywood movies but DDLJ is something I've always cherished. It's an all-time classic. It's always good to watch an ordinary couple go through extraordinary lengths to be together in the end."

A lot of emotional viewers ended up shedding tears during the movie, and it hasn't been any different for the new generation.

"When I first saw 'DDLJ' it made me cry. After watching the movie, almost every girl started expecting some Raj to walk into her life and love her the same way that he did in the movie, at least I did," said Ashra Sachdeva.

There are many unforgettable aspects of the film -- the plush yellow mustard fields, the Swiss cow bell, SRK's 'Senorita' and 'Bade bade shehron mein choti choti baatein hoti rehti hain" dialogues, Kajol's pristine white salwar suit and the famous climax, where Kajol runs towards her bruised lover, who's already aboard a moving train.

Gushes Ria Malhotra, a 26-year-old: "The scene was repeated with SRK and Deepika Padukone in 'Chennai Express', but nothing can beat the charm of DDLJ, where a father tells his daughter to go and live her life to the fullest with the love of her life."

'Horror Story' director to helm scary film on Mumbai mill

0
0

Ayush Raina, who made his directorial debut with "Horror Story", says his next movie is titled "Haunting At Bombay Mill", and he will be shooting for it at some real locations.

"The backdrop of the story is Mumbai, so the film will be widely shot in Mumbai and, yes, in bits and pieces we are planning to shoot in some real locations as well. The mills today in Mumbai are not in a great state, so it would not be easy to take the crew there and shoot the entire film. We will start shooting in the next couple of days," Raina told IANS.

"Haunting At Bombay Mill" is being made in association with Team Pentacle, a group dedicated to Paranormal Research and UFOlogy in India, to make horror films based on real life investigations.

Talking about the film's storyline, Raina said: "Six months ago, there was an investigator who looked at one of the mills and shared his experiences with us. That's when we decided to make a film on it.

"As far as the casting of the film is concerned, we have a wonderful team including Kainat Arora, Feryna Wazheir and Nandu Madhav. I am looking forward to working with them."

The Madras High Court bench here Thursday allowed the release of superstar Rajinikanth-starrer "Lingaa" Friday on the condition that its producer Rockline Venkatesh deposit Rs.10 crore in the court.

According to the order, Rs.5 crore needs to be submitted in cash and the rest in bank guarantee by Friday noon to the court registrar.

Justice V. Dhanapalan and Justice V.M Velumani passed the order on a writ appeal filed by aspiring filmmaker K.R. Ravi Rathinam, who accused the makers of "Lingaa" of stealing his script.

Justice Dhanapalan said the order was passed as a pre-condition to release the film and protect the petitioner's right until he approaches the right forum.

Earlier, a single judge had dismissed the petitioner's petition and directed him to invoke criminal or civil proceedings.

Producer Rockline Venkatesh said he will "abide by the court's decision".

"The film will release globally tomorrow (Friday). There won't be any change in the release," Venkatesh told IANS.

"Lingaa", which also stars Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty in the lead, is the first Rajinikanth film to release on his birthday. The superstar will turn 63 Friday.
