Opera-style Ramayana creates musical symphony in Delhi

0

Though the set wasn't as grand as operas are known for, but the way different dance forms - Indian and western - contributed in weaving a narrative of a unique opera-styled Ramayana here Friday it highlighted the nuances of performing arts and how they can merge with elegance.

On Friday evening, the national capital witnessed a magical music and dance performance when six dance forms - Italian opera, Yakshagana from Karnataka, Purulia Chhau from West Bengal, Odishi from Odisha, Manipuri from Manipur and Kathak from Delhi - blended to chronicle the journey of Ram and Sita, from their meeting to the coronation.

What made the 100-minute performance stand apart was the conceptualisation by yoga guru Bijoylaxmi Hota, known for having used different dance forms to define qualities of each character.

Italian opera dancers donned the roles of Ram and Lakshman, delicate and resplendent Sita was an Odishi dancer, deers and peacocks were played by Chau dancers and the mighty Ravana, also called Dashanan, was played by a Yakshagana artiste.

The nuances of their respective dance forms reflected in their roles where their performances seemed speaking louder than words could convey and the emotions and movements lent gradual support to the performance.

Organised by Odishi dancer Reela Hota who played Sita in the event, this opera was a part of the 5th International Ancient Arts Festival.

"We are not doing the fusion for the sake of doing. Each character was given a dance form that could blend in their role's characteristics, Hota told IANS after the performance.

"The challenge here was to create an opera without using props. Classical dance forms don't use props. Our musical presentation wasn't cosmopolitan but a representation of our rustic culture," she added.

The "Ishq Vishk" actress was busy doing a US TV show called "One Life to Live" and a travel show titled "Culture Shock".

"Currently, I am doing a show in the US called 'Brown Nation' in which I am representing India and I am also acting in a show for Comedy Central in the US. I got back to Hindi films when I got 'Main Aur Mr. Right', which is a new, fresh and exciting romantic comedy," said the former video jockey.

I will be hesitant to kiss on-screen: Pakistani actor

0
0

Pakistani actor Mikaal Zulfiqar, who touched the hearts of Indian audiences through his performances in TV shows "Dhoop Chaaon" and "Aaina Dulhan Ka", is willing to work in Indian soaps, but says he can't get intimate on the screen.

"I would love to do Indian shows, provided the script is good," said the actor who is not new to Indian cinema. He worked in "Godfather", a collaborative Pakistan-India film, as well as Jag Mundhra's "Shoot on Sight".

The Indian television is getting bolder, but Mikaal says he cannot adapt to the trend.

"Call me old-fashioned, but I will be hesitant to kiss on-screen. It will take some time for the boldness to find a place in Pakistan. At the end of the day, we are an Islamic country and it's a sensitive topic," Mikaal told IANS over phone from his home in Lahore.

Ever since Pakistani TV shows have entered Indian households via the 'Zindagi' channel, viewers have latched on to short and crisp dramas revolving around real life. Mikaal is of the view that it's time for Indian producers to ditch the 'larger than life' storyline and focus on realism akin to Pakistani serials.

"Pakistani serials are more inclined towards reality and it's our strength. It's not necessary that murder or infidelity will only add drama to the serials," the actor told IANS over phone from his home in Lahore.

"In our country, serials narrate about small household issues. For instance, it's not necessary that the business deal should be of Rs.500 crore, it could be of Rs.10 lakh as well. I feel there's no need to go into such elaborations," he added.

He also feels that Indian television is the reflection of Bollywood.

"Indian TV is probably influenced by Indian cinema, which is larger than life. But in case of Bollywood, such portrayal works. Cinema is to entertain and it exudes a feel good factor if it is full of songs and dance sequences," Mikaal said.

Mikaal has also worked in popular Pakistani dramas such as "Ik Kasak Baaki Hai" and "Paani Jaisa Pyar".

Bhagavad Gita must be declared national scripture: Sushma

0
0

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj Sunday applauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's gesture of presenting the Bhagavad Gita to world leaders, saying the holy book has been elevated to the status of a national scripture.

She proposed the need for a formal announcement to this effect in order to officially establish the book's status to that of a national scripture.

"Prime Minister Modi gifted the Bhagavad Gita to US President Barack Obama, which means it has already received the honour of a national scripture. What we require is only a formal announcement now to officially declare the Gita as a national scripture," Sushma Swaraj said in a public meeting to commemorate 5,151 years of the Bhagavad Gita at the Red Fort.

Underscoring the importance of the Gita's role in daily life, she said its message to perform one's duty without feeling attached to its outcome is what guides her sense of duty at the ministry.

"I face a whole range of world problems at the department (external affairs ministry). Guided by the Gita's principle, I thank Lord Krishna for giving me the outcome of my efforts as per my will. And in case of the opposite, I accept the outcome as his divine will," she said.

The Gita, believed to be the divine advice of Lord Krishna, is a 700-verse Hindu scripture that is part of the epic Mahabharata.

Its call for selfless action inspired many leaders of the independence movement, including Mahatma Gandhi who referred to the Gita as his "spiritual dictionary".

Organised by the Global Inspiration Enlightenment Organisation Gita (GEIO Gita), the event marked the end of a week-long celebration - Gita Prerna Mahotsav - that sought to create awareness about the scripture as a source of practical inspiration for people in politics, education, business and other fields.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who was also present, called for a need to have a postal stamp to mark the Bhagavad Gita's anniversary.

Gita lovers from across India participated in the event to promote its message beyond communal and racial divisions.

"I have faith in the Gita," said Yusuf A. Ranapurwala, president of the Minority Morcha, who came to the event along with 15 other Muslims from Gujarat.

"The prime minister has asked all of us to stay united as a nation. We all have to walk together while looking beyond our disparate religious backgrounds," he told IANS.

In view of the Indian diaspora's appreciation for Modi's work in making the Gita significant worldwide, Britain-based Steve White told IANS that the Gita was "universally relevant for its preaching that also helps in personality development".

Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ashok Singhal, yoga guru Ramdev, GEIO Gita founder Swami Gyananand Maharaj and noted heart specialist Naresh Trehan also attended the event along with many spiritual leaders and foreign dignitaries from over 20 countries.

People from across India pledged to adopt the Gita's message and lead their lives in accordance with its principles. There was also a dance performance and recitation of some Gita verses by school children.

Rishi Kapoor to play grandfather for the first time in Divya Kumar's Sanam Re

Divya Khosla Kumar, who made her directorial venture with the hit film Yaariyan, is all set to direct her second love story Sanam Re. For the first time, one will see Rishi Kapoor playing the role of a grandfather in her film. Produced by Bhushan Kumar, the film stars Pulkit Samrat, Yami Gautam and Urvashi Rautela.

Rishi Kapoor, who has been reluctant in the past to even play the role of a father, has now agreed to play a grandfather's role in Divya's film.

When quizzed Bhushan Kumar about Rishi Kapoor agreeing to play the role of a grandfather for the first time, he said, “"Since I know Rishiji, Divya asked me if I would ask him to consider playing a dada's role in her film. My first reaction was that Rishiji, being a big star, would ask for big money and given that Divya's film is a small budgeted film, I was not comfortable asking him. Yet, I was at his house and reluctantly decided to ask him. Rishiji immediately said, 'Divya is like my daughter, being your wife and I would have done it for free had it been a father's role, but dada ka role main kissi keemat pe nahi karoonga.' I pushed my luck with him and said, 'Just for her satisfaction, can she please come and present her script to you?' A few days later, Rishiji came to our office, heard the script from Divya and then came into my room to say, 'I will play dada only."

When contacted, Divya said, “From the time I was working on the script, I had Rishiji in mind to play the role of a grandfather. I am happy that he loved the script and agreed to play grandfather’s role for the first time in my film.”
