Purab Kohli is baffled, but why

0
0

Actor Purab Kohli, who is associated with a number of social causes like animal welfare, welfare of under-privileged women and children, says he is baffled why people associated with a good cause are not paid well.

“Some of the groups I work with do such amazing work that I often wonder why these people aren’t paid top notch salaries? Why do they have to go around asking people for money when their work is focused towards the betterment of societies?

“They fill in the gap and think and execute areas that governments overlook or are too busy to notice. My contributions towards them are minuscule compared to what change these people bring about in the lives of so many,” the actor said in a statement.

The “Rock On!!” actor firmly believes that compassion and humanity are the most important things in life. As part of his philanthropic activities, Purab continues to be a part of NGO Toy Bank as a mentor since early 2009.

The 35-year-old feels he is spreading joy with Toy Bank as the NGO provide toys to under-privileged children.

Talking about his association with the NGO the actor said, “Toy Bank works very hard towards bringing that play back into the lives of under-privileged children. By volunteering with them I feel like they bring back some in my life too".

Actress Gul Panag, who is the face of the adventure campaign Kingfisher Blue Mile, said it's a general convention that adventurous people are mad.

“Adventure to me is about pushing my limits, pushing my endurance limits and taking extremely calculated risks,” the actress told IANS on a telephonic interview.

“Most people think adventure is being reckless. The typical person out there thinks, 'People who are adventurous are actually mad'. No, they're not.

“They're not reckless at all. They plan and they calculate and then you take risks. Those who pursue adventure are essentially people who understand the risks involved, cater for them and then push their limits,” she added.

The campaign will take adventure and wanderlust seekers on a thrilling trekking expedition to Everest base camp.

The actress will be present at select campouts as the official ranker of the campaign. She will also flag off the trek and greet the participants as they summit at Everest base camp.

'Hawaa Hawaai' brings curtain down on NCFF

The first edition of the National Children's Film Festival (NCFF) came to an end with the screening of Amole Gupte's “Hawaa Hawaai” Sunday.

The 120-minute film was screened here at the Siri Fort Auditorium. It tells the tale of a young boy, Arjun, who discovers the hidden world of in-line skating through coach Lucky, who mentors kids to become skating champions.

While Arjun starts coaching under Lucky, his four friends get together to make his dream come true for him. Arjun is played by child actor Partho Gupte, who has made his debut in the film “Stanley ka Dabba” while actor Saqib Saleem plays coach Lucky.

The film, which released earlier this year in May, made the audience, consisting mostly of school kids, applaud and whistle.

The three-day festival, organised by Children's Film Society of India (CFSI), began with the inaugural lamp lighting by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley along with tennis star Sania Mirza and actress Dia Mirza followed by the screening of Seemaa Desai's “Pappu ki Pugdandi”.

Also present on the inaugural day was actress Divya Dutta, TV star Sakshi Tanwar, Minister of State Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, along with festival director Shravan Kumar.

A collection of children's films was showcased and various workshops were also organised.

Films like Bernd Neuberger's “Summer with the Ghost”, Thomas Neilsen's “Sunshine Berry and Disco Worms”, Shridhar Rangayan's “Yeh Hai Chakkad Bakkad Bumbe Bo” were also screened.

Shiamak Davar Dance Workshop and Film and Television Institute of India's Film Appreciation workshop were also organised.

The festival director, also the CEO of CFSI, said that even though this time the festival was not a competitive event, he has an intention to make it one in the future.

“This is a non-competitive event, but our intention is to make it competitive in the future,” he told IANS.

Kumar believes reaching out to children takes a diverse range of efforts.

“Children audience is very dynamic in terms of receptivity. You can't have a monotonous way of reaching out to them the way the schools do, they have a standard pattern of educating kids.

“But creativity cannot be imparted like so, that is why I have organised such a diverse festival where we have kids mela, exhibitions, workshops and of course films,” he added.

Filmmaking not just for rich kids, says Shravan Kumar

0

Films can be made by children irrespective of their background, says Children's Film Society of India's (CFSI) CEO Shravan Kumar.

At the National Children's Film Festival (NCFF), organised by CSFI, Kumar said filmmaking doesn't differentiate on the basis of one's financial status.

Giving an example of award-winning film “Phoolwati Amma”, Kumar said it was directed by two girls from sixth standard with humble background.

It had won the second best award at 18th Golden Elephant International Film Festival.

“Last year, in the 18th Golden Elephant, I had curated a section called 'Little Directors' in which films made by children were competing. We have a stereotypical notion that filmmaking is generally for children with elite background.

"These two girls, who made 'Phoolwati Amma', came from a very humble background. One of their parents' used to work as a domestic help," he told IANS.

“...You have children studying in municipal schools and making movies that are winning awards. They won the second best award, The Golden Plaque. It is wonderful and it gave me immense satisfaction,” he added.

Kumar also highlighted that it is important for filmmakers to be extra careful while making children's films.

He said: “We at CFSI are very thorough in choosing the films so right from the synopsis stage to the screenplay, there are a lot of intense debates with the filmmakers.

"That is the most important thing, we consider all the aspects and then we finalise the film as the young mind is very impressionable.”

This was the first edition of the NCFF organised at the Siri Fort Auditorium here. The festival featured films like Seemaa Desai's “Pappu ki Pugdandi” and Amole Gutpe's “Hawaa Hawaai”.

Exhibitions and workshops were also organised for children.

The three-day festival opened Friday on Children's Day and concluded Sunday.

Children are agents of change: Prasoon Joshi

Writer-lyricist and ad guru Prasoon Joshi, who has recently penned the anthem for "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”, says children are the future of the nation and if "we instill a value in a child, it will go a long way".

“If we want to see 'swachh Bharat' after 10 years from now, we need to talk to the children as they will be adults at that time,” Joshi told IANS over phone.

The song titled “Swachh Bharat ka irada” has been put to music by Vishal Khurana and was released by the information and broadcasting ministry in October.

Along with singer Kailash Kher, the anthem has been sung by many children, including Joshi’s daughter Aishaanya, and was taken to different schools on Children's Day Nov 14, to generate awareness about the campaign.

Joshi insists that children's voices were incorporated as they can “bring the change we want to see”.

“Children are the main singers of the anthem along with Kailash. Children are the future and have the innocence, if we instill a value in a child it will go a long way. Hence, we are trying to make a pledge through children towards a better future and bring a change,” he said.

It was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who took forward the message to clean India in all quarters and Joshi says the idea of using children's voice too was inspired by Modi.

“I saw that PM is so connected with children. He believes that children play an important role in bringing a change in the country. It inspired me and I wrote something that sounds nice in children's voices,” Joshi said.

The lyricists, whose poem “Mumkin hai” was used in the finale episode of “Satyamev Jayate”, is now looking forward to film “Margarita, with a Straw" starring Kalki Koechlin.

“Right now I looking forward to 'Margarita, with a Straw'. I have other projects but I can't talk about them right now,” he said.

Oscar winner Megan Mylan's documentary "After My Garden Grows", which tells the story of a teenager in rural West Bengal growing food on a tiny rooftop garden to feed her family and as a means to delay her marriage, was screened at the 20th Kolkata International Film Festival to a packed audience.

The American documentary filmmaker clinched the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) for "Smile Pinki", which released in 2008. It is based on a five-year-old girl from Varanasi with severe cleft lip.

Her current venture, the 10-minute short "After My Garden Grows", was showcased at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Bollywood actor Aamir Khan hosted a special showing in Mumbai Friday.

Revolving around 16-year-old Monika Barman, a resident of Bhutkura village in Bengal's Cooch Behar district, it shows how minor girls are turning to farming on small plots of land in the district for their independence and empowerment.

This stops girls from getting married off at an early age.

Monika is one of the 40,000 girls participating in a programme to empower adolescent girls through the micro-agricultural programme for adolescents launched by the state government in 2011 as part of the central government's Sabla scheme.

"Monika is trying to change her life as well as the lives of others in her village. This is an example that change is happening in India and through the film, we hope it reaches others," Mylan told the media Sunday after the screening.

Monika and her sister Kanika were also present at the premiere Sunday.

Tamil filmmaker R.S Prasanna says Kamal Haasan's "Hey Ram" had a big influence in the making of his upcoming English period film "On A Quest", about Swami Chinmayananda, a Hindu spiritual leader who inspired the formation of Chinmaya Mission.

"During the making of 'On A Quest', meant for the film festival circuit, I was devouring the masterpiece'Hey Ram', along with my film crew. Each and every frame was a masterclass on making a period film, and many times we forgot that we had a film to make of our own and got into gushing love and admiration at the detailing and intelligence of the film," Prasanna told IANS.

He said that "Hey Ram" was "years ahead of its time".

"On A Quest" features art director Thota Tharani as Swami Chinmayananda.

Kamal Haasan was the reason Prasanna fell in love with the magic of filmmaking quite early on in his life.

"In my second grade, I became obsessed with 'Guna', walking around my house in circles chanting paeans to Abirami, and of course finishing with a solid crash against the wall. It never hurt," he said.

"Kamal Haasan was the Drona to this Eklavya as I went through school, trying to balance my grades with my growing obsession with films," he added.

Prasanna had "sleepless nights" when Kamal appreciated his critically acclaimed Tamil debut "Kalyana Samayal Saadham".

"Kamal sir will always be the Drona to million Eklavyas, who never asked for a thumb in return!," he declared.
