Rs.100 crore is too less: SRK

0
0

Indian filmmakers often go gaga when their movies cross the Rs.100 crore benchmark, but Bollywood's blockbuster hero Shah Rukh Khan believes that the industry needs bigger dreams.

He says every film must make at least half of the amount that Hollywood film "Avatar" minted.

"Rs.100 crore is too less. To think of it is a limitation by itself. People who don't understand films and creativity in films, they put our work in these boxes (of Rs.100 crore clubs).

"I would want every film to do roaring business. If we have to establish a footprint globally, Rs.100 crore is too less. I would want each of our films to make as much money as 'Avatar'. At least 50 percent of it," Shah Rukh said at a press conference here Thursday night.

The actor, whose "Ra.One" and "Chennai Express" were money spinners, says that by putting the Rs.100 crore cap, we are limiting our own possibilities.

"It is a good base to start off business-wise, but I don't think of business. I am a creative person. I think and I like to believe there is no limitation to creativity," he said.

The actor's next film is "Happy New Year", which comes from his home production Red Chillies Entertainment. A multi-starrer heist drama with dollops of dance and music, the film is directed by his close friend Farah Khan.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who co-produced the film "Mary Kom", says M.C. Mary Kom's victory of India's first women's boxing gold in Asian Games in Incheon, is no surprise, given her "tenacity and passion".

“She is a true hero. I am not surprised by her victory. I expected her to bring the gold home from the Asian Games. Mary has the tenacity and the passion. These are qualities that prompted us to make a film on her life in the first place," Bhansali said.

"Mary Kom" is a biopic based on the ups and downs of the star boxer's life. Featuring Priyanka Chopra and Darshan Kumar, it is directed by first timer Omung Kumar.

Darshan, who played Mary Kom’s husband in the biopic, said: “We are all super-proud of the super-woman. Congrats Mary for the wonderful victory. You’ve made India shine with your gold. I feel blessed to have been part of a film about your life.”

Mary Kom punched her way to victory, defeating Kazakhstan's Zhaina Shekerbekova in the flyweight (48-51kg) final in Incheon Wednesday.

Javed Akhtar clocks 50 years since stepping into Mumbai

It was on this day 50 years ago that Javed Akhtar had stepped foot in Mumbai from Gwalior to pursue his creative dreams.

The now acclaimed lyricist and writer recently participated in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Swachch Bharat Abhiyan' on Gandhi Jayanti Thursday at the Mumbai Central station to sweep the platforms.

Speaking of the experience, Javed said: "It is always a pleasure to be part of any campaign for a better nation. And Narendra Modiji's 'Swachch Bharat Abhiyan' was definitely a wonderful idea. I happily supported it."

Pointing out at a significant personal historical link of his past to the clean-India campaign, he said: "It was 50 years ago on Oct 4, 1964 that I left my hometown Gwalior to reach Mumbai by a train that took me to Mumbai Central. And now, just two days short of the day, I had arrived in Mumbai 50 years ago I was the same place as part of a clean-Indian campaign."

He feels the turnout could have been better in support of the clean India campaign.

"We talk of a clean Indian, corruption-free India. But we can't even keep the road in front of our homes clean. We say, 'Let the government do it.' Why must the government be expected to do everything? Don't we as responsible citizens have a responsibility towards society?"

He feels it's time to take matters into our own hands.

"It's time we realised that we are the government. No on else is going to do it for us. We see big shiny malls with dirt and filth right outside it. We only talk about change. But we don't want to do anything to bring a change," he said.

Born to Jan Nisar Akhtar, an Urdu poet and a Bollywood lyricist and Safia Akhtar, a teacher and writer, Javed's tryst with the world of words was as though predestined.

The 69-year-old got his first break in "Yakeen" (1969), and since then, he has been credited with a slew of songs, scripts and poems, which have been highly appreciated.

As a scriptwriter, his erstwhile partnership with Salim Khan, gave the Hindi film industry, movies like "Zanjeer", "Deewar", "Sholay", "Haathi Mere Saathi", "Seeta Aur Geeta" and "Trishul".

Some of his best works came out as a songwriter. He penned lyrics for "Saaz" for which he won the 1996 Best Lyricist National Award. He also bagged the National Award for "Border" (1997), "Godmother" (1998), "Refugee" (2001) and "Lagaan" (2002). His soul-stirring lyrics, he won Filmfare awards for "1942 A Love Story" (1995), "Border" (1998), "Refugee" (2001), "Lagaan" (2002), "Kal Ho Na Ho" (2004) and "Veer Zaara" (2005).

In his personal life, the creative expert had first married Honey Irani, a scriptwriter for Hindi films. With her, he has two kids - actor-filmmaker Farhan and Zoya, who is a filmmaker.

After ending his marriage with Honey, Javed married actress Shabana Azmi in 1984.

Javed's first collection of Urdu poetry, "Tarkash" came out in 1995.

His work and contribution to the literary was lauded with the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2007.

Small wonder 'Haider' rides on word of mouth

0
0

It's a small film made with a lot of heart. Vishal Bhardwaj's "Haider", his twist on William Shakespeare's tragic play "Hamlet", is climbing up the Bollywood box office ladder thanks to a positive word of mouth, say experts. It has earned a cumulative of Rs.13.07 crore within two days of its release.

The Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu and Kay Kay Menon starrer hit the screens Thursday along with the big budget entertainer "Bang Bang".

On its opening day, "Haider" minted Rs.6.14 crore, and on the following day, it managed a business of Rs.6.93 crore, registering a 14 percent jump in its collections, said a source from the production team, UTV Motion Pictures.

"The film witnessed a huge jump in most of the regions, including Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan," the source added.

Made at a budget of Rs.24 crore, the canvas of "Haider" is dark and violent, but beautiful in its own way.

Set against the unrest in the Kashmir Valley, the story revolves around a man who wants to avenge his father's death. And Bhardwaj, known for giving Bollywood buffs a different cinematic sensibility with movies like "Maqbool", "Omkara" and "Kaminey", has used apt locations and setting to suit the grim and gritty mood of his latest offering.

Industry experts believe "Haider" is performing well, and its collections are poised to grow over the days.

"It has performed really well. The film did pretty well on the first day and I believe it has only become better. The liking for the film is not only limited to single screens as the film is getting a good response from multiplex audience as well. The response for the film at our cinema chain is really good," Deepak Sharma, chief operating officer, PVR Pictures, told IANS.

Sharma said the audience is aware that it's a "very different movie", and its performances and cinematography are turning out to be crowd pullers.

"Word of mouth publicity is working for the film. I would say that the audience is not only appreciating the film because of the publicity, but due to genuine liking towards the movie," he added.

Agrees Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines.

"'Haider' has collected over Rs.11 crore so far and it will grow through word of mouth," Thadani said, adding that the fact that "Bang Bang" released on the same day, has affected the collections that "Haider" could have managed.

"Bang Bang", starring Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, and directed by Siddharth Anand, is the official Bollywood remake of Hollywood film "Knight and Day". Its exotic locations, high octane action sequences and star power added an additional buzz much before the movie hit as many as over 4500 screens worldwide.

"Haider" is said to have released in around 1500 screens.

Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Arts says "'Haider' is doing decent business. The screens have been divided between both the films, but both the films are little long...If the films had medium or short length, they would have got more screens."

Now dads also involved in kids' upbringing: Sonali Bendre

Actress Sonali Bendre, who was initially hesitant about taking up a fiction TV show due to her son, is glad that men nowadays are giving importance to their child’s upbringing. She credits her husband for helping her to manage work and family.

The “Zakhm” star has a nine-year-old son Ranveer with husband and filmmaker Goldie Behl. She believes that now fathers take equal interest in their children’s development as much as mothers do.

“Mothers were only involved in bringing up of their children. Now fathers are also involved. Earlier it was just about mothers,” she said.

Sonali, who will be seen on “Ajeeb Daastaan Hain Ye” for at least six months, says she wasn’t keen on taking up the forthcoming fiction TV show because of her son. But her husband has been supportive and “helps a lot”.

“My husband said ‘Don’t worry, you go, I’m there. I will adjust my meetings. I’m there for Ranveer.' He goes to our son’s tennis class sometimes or picks him up from school," said the actress, who plays a mother in the show too.

“I drop my son to school and by his dinner time, I’m home. Sometimes, I have to do night shooting and it’s tough for me. My kid on the other hand, is getting freedom,” she added.

Amidst shooting, supervising house, the fit and fabulous Sonali manages to find time to work out.

“I go gymming thrice a week and I don’t eat junk food or take aerated drinks. I have always eaten healthy. Since childhood, after every two hours I would feel hungry.

"My mom used to get irritated and would shout at me. Now, people are spending lakhs by going to a dietician who suggests to eat after every two hours,” she said.

She hasn’t thought about any new project after the show goes off air, but knows one thing for sure -- if she has to work with her husband, it “has to be special”. But production is not on her mind as of now.

“People take production lightly. You need training for it. I am an actor and I won’t do a job that I don’t know,” she said.

Directed by Jaya Ravindra, "Nee Jathaga Nenundali" released in August and did well at the box office.

"The film has recovered money and it has been a profitable venture. In fact, the producer is so happy with my work that he has asked me to do his next film as well. I am in talks with him," Sachiin told IANS here.

Naseer not in favour of Adajania making another 'Cocktail'

Naseeruddin Shah praises Homi Adajania for valuing "aesthetics" and "authenticity" and adds that the director is also savvy enough to make a "completely synthetic and crass film like 'Cocktail'."

After working with the director in his dark drama "Being Cyrus" and his recent quirky film "Finding Fanny", the National Award-winning actor seems to be quite impressed with Adajania's way of working.

"I love Homi. I just love his insanity. He is very good with his work," Naseer told IANS.

"He values aesthetics and authenticity and at the same time he is savvy enough to make a completely synthetic and crass film like 'Cocktail' and didn't get carried away by the success of a film like that... That is very courageous," he said.

He added: "If he would have been making another film like 'Cocktail', I would have kicked his ass and secondly, I wouldn't have done it. I am happy and proud Homi has made a film like 'Finding Fanny' where he could have easily made a film like 'Cocktail'.

"I don't feel making 'Cocktail' was necessary because he could have made 'Finding Fanny' equally well five years ago."

Adajania's 2012 release "Cocktail" was a romantic comedy-drama and the Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty-starrer had become one of the biggest earners of the year.

Meanwhile, Naseer, who had made his directorial debut in 2006 with "Yun Hota To Kya Hota", has no plans of helming another film at the moment.

"No direction. I am happy directing on stage," he said and added: "I might (direct), but I don't have the energy. It's too much of hard work."

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan says he is “proud” to be part of the film fraternity, which acts as an integrator.

“Cinema in today's times is perhaps the only integrator left, in this fast disintegrating world ... Proud to be in its fraternity,” the 71-year-old tweeted Sunday.

A star, who rose on the film firmament during the 1970s, has so far retained his charm and his fan following is growing even today. His wife Jaya, son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai are also film stars.

He will turn 72 Oct 11 and his kitty is full with assignments -- he has Vidhu Vinod Chopra-produced film in hand and he recently wrapped up filming for R. Balakrishnan aka Balki's “Shamitabh”.

Currently, Amitabh is hosting reality game show "Kaun Banega Crorepati" on the small screen.

Glad to see character actors getting lead roles: Boman Irani

0
0

At an age when most Bollywood actors end up with "itsy bitsy" roles, Boman Irani is getting to play strong and sensible characters and pitches for Indian cinema exploring such films where such actors get equal prominence - as in the recently-released "Finding Fanny".

"I think there are many situations where character actors are getting equal prominence like main leads, but eventually it is the kind of cinema that has to be explored. 'Finding Fanny' is a great example of the same," the 54-year-old told IANS in an interview.

Directed by Homi Adajania, the English language Bollywood entertainer "Finding Fanny" had Arjun Kapoor and Deepika Padukone as the lead pair, but the film's USP was veteran actors - Dimple Kapadia, Naseeruddin Shah, and Pankaj Kapur - in key roles.

"I am so glad that 'Finding Fanny' found a great audience. I am very proud," said Boman, who began his acting career pretty late, but he was lucky to get meaty and memorable roles soon enough.

He started his film career in 2001 with "Everybody Says I'm Fine!", but proved his mettle as J.C. Asthana in Rajkumar Hirani's 2003 hit comedy "Munnabhai M.B.B.S". There was no looking back for him after that.

He followed it up with "Being Cyrus", "Lage Raho Munna Bhai", "Khosla Ka Ghosla", "Don - The Chase Begins Again" and "3 Idiots".

The actor admits that in the past, there were films that had put the spotlight on senior actors and proved to do well.

"I think 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' was a good example where the title role was played by Anupam Kher. There have been many examples in the past too," he said, stressing that an artiste's age is of little significance.

"I feel it is not about characters, but more about the story. It is eventually the story that we are telling and then everything comes under play. We have to come up with a great story," added the actor who is geared up for his next release "Happy New Year".

Directed by Farah Khan and produced by Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment, the film is centred on six losers who set out to change their destiny.

Other actors who will be seen in the film include Deepika, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, and Vivaan Shah along with Shah Rukh himself.

"Happy New Year" is set for a Diwali release.

'Mickey Virus' director's next - clean comedy 'Meet The Patels'

0

After making his directorial debut with "Mickey Virus", Saurabh Varma is set to make his next comedy film titled "Meet The Patels". He says it will have clean humour.

"'Mickey Virus' had a thriller element. But this time, I'm making an out-and-out comedy film. It's based in Mumbai and there's no abusive language in it, no slapstick comedy. It' a clean comedy," Varma told IANS.

He says the movie is an effort "to make a comedy which Indians would love".

Talking further about "Meet The Patels", he said: "This film will have two characters named Tom Patel and Jerry Patel. The story revolves around them. I am targeting all Indians but it will have a Gujarati flavour to it. There will be a Gujarati song too, but the whole idea of the film is to have universal appeal."

To be produced by Krian Media, the film will go on the floors in November.

Varma's first film starred Manish Paul and Elli Avram.

However, he is yet to cast anyone for "Meet The Patels".

"We're in the process of casting. It is too early to reveal the names (as of now). In the next few days, we shall make an official announcement. There will be a lot of interesting characters in it and there are some very good actors (in the film industry) today," he added.
