Rahul Mishra is "stunned with the response" to his debut show at Paris Fashion Week (PFW) Spring/Summer 2015. He gives credit to West Bengal craftsman for his marvellous collection, which not only helped him make a mark in the international fashion circuit, but also helped him in wooing global buyers.

Thanks to the show, Mishra is busy taking orders from buyers across the globe.

"We are selling very well. Not just in Paris, we are booking orders from all over the world," the designer told IANS by phone from the venue - Palais de Tokyo - in Paris, one of the fashion capitals of the world.

"From 10-15 stores in Italy, to some in New York and Sydney, we are stunned with the response. I think we need to double up our production to serve all of them," added the designer who is returning Oct 15.

Mishra showcased a spring-summer 2015 collection titled "The Ferryman's Tale" at the nine-day fashion extravaganza, which concluded Wednesday.

"The collection was hand-made in rural India for the world," he said.

"I worked with a bunch of West Bengal craftsmen who are currently staying in Delhi and Mumbai and it was because of their efforts that we ended up presenting such a marvellous collection," added Mishra, who showcased on the last day.

Asked about the title of the ensemble inspired by traditional Japanese artworks and three centuries old Chintz textile, he said: "The story of a ferryman carries stories from across the mainland, garnered with beautiful chronicles of timeless textiles and techniques."

High on intricate hand embroidery, the range scored, thanks to the detailed simplicity in the line represented through age-old craftsmanship in a modern progressive graphic style.

Sharing his experience about his debut show at PFW, Mishra said it was "super fun", especially when veteran fashion expert Suzy Menkes complimented him for his contribution to Indian handloom.

"Spent some time with Suzy Menkes and she loved it (the collection). She loved the detailing on clothes and said the craftsmanship was extremely detailed," Mishra said.

"She was also curious to know about rural India and said you are doing a big favour to fashion,” said the designer, who is also engaged in empowering and employing Indian craft community through his sustainable design interventions.

Masaba, daughter of cricket legend Vivian Richards and Indian actress Neena Gupta, was only 24 when she took over the responsibility as fashion director at the brand.

"As two wonderful years of being Satya Paul's fashion director come to an end, I am grateful to Sanjay Kapoor (managing director at Genesis Colors) for giving me the opportunity to become an integral part of the legendary label. It has been a great learning curve for me and I am thankful to my team without whom this career-defining journey would not have been possible,” said Masaba.

Forget the ice bucket challenge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday started a similar chain, nominating actors Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and industrialist Anil Ambani among nine people to spread the message of Clean India.

Modi, launching the Clean India Campaign Thursday, nominated nine eminent personalities to take forward his message to clean the nation.

The others nominated are Goa Governor Mridula Sinha, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, yoga guru Baba Ramdev, actor-producer Kamal Haasan and the team of television serial "Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah".

These nine celebrities will not only have to take up cleaning campaigns to spread the message, but will have to nominate nine more people, starting a chain, similar to the ALS ice bucket challenge that recently went viral.

"I have invited nine people and asked them to come to public places and work towards a clean India," Modi said.

"These nine people can nominate nine more people, and they can clean and upload videos," said the prime minister.

The ice bucket challenge involved dumping a bucket of ice water on someone's head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research.

The prime minister also gave a call to launch a social media campaign with hash tag My Clean India.

Modi said pictures an videos of dirty places and their cleanup must be uploaded online.

The Clean India Campaign, launched by the prime minister Thursday, aims to clean up the country by Oct 2, 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

'Bang Bang': Big, dumb and pointless flick (IANS Hindi Film Review)

$
0
0

Film: "Bang Bang"; Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif; Directed by Siddharth Anand; Rating: **(2 stars)

There are many beautiful locations in this ....ummm....bang binge. Prague, Greece, London, Shimla, Dehra Dun and...Pizza Hut.

Yup, one major action sequence featuring Hrithik and Katrina, the Golden Couple on the run (gee, what fun!) is set in a pizza shop. In fact this particular chain seems to be very good at delivering their goods, considering Danny Denzongpa, playing an international kingpin, is seen nibbling at the same pizza brand at the start of the film.

Appetizer, anyone?

Wish we could see the same zeal for delivering the goods in the direction of the film. In one word "Bang Bang" is pointless. In two words it is annoyingly pointless, with Hrithik Roshan cast as a double and triple agent with a fake version of what this week's other release describes as chutzpah.

Katrina Kaif plays the kind of vexatious dreamer who would allow a renowned criminal to convince her that she should abandon her boring life for some supposedly cool hi-adventure. And hi-adventure in "Bang Bang" means somersaulting cars, vertiginous jumps from heights and Hrithik trying to pass off water sports as stunts performed to save the world from catastrophe.

None of this is as exciting for us to watch as it is for Katrina to do through. She is having fun the way other boring girls in our films do when they meet the unpredictable adventurous hero. Check out Deepika Padukone in "Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani". The difference between Deepika's and Kaif's awakening is palpable. You see the first girl transform in front of your eyes. You only see this girl prancing like a kindergarten kid to get attention.

Where is the plot to suggest there is a simmering chemistry between Katrina and Hrithik ready to erupt in the midst of all the blazing guns and screeching cars? Somewhere tucked away in this glamorous mess there must be a plot that you are expected to spend a good two and a half hours searching for. All we see is a cocky Hrithik infusing an extra dose of bravado into his jewel-thief hero's role. This is Hrithik's loudest performance since Sooraj Barjatya's "Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon".

But we are are digressing. "Bang Bang" is not about the finer points of the cinematic expression. For that check out this week's other release "Haider". "Bang Bang" is about smooth surfaces, beautiful faces, well-toned bodies and locations that are chosen for no rhyme or reason except to beat the next Big Bollywood Blockbuster from getting there.

It's not just the finances that are squandered in making the film look scenically adventurous(maybe to hide the bottomless pit of nothingness that such bang-bang actioners aim for). The criminal wastage of acting talent makes you wish there were laws preventing actors like Pavan Malhotra, Vikram Gokhale, Ankur Vikal, Danny Denzongpa, Kanwaljeet and Deepti Naval from signing on for these films that presumably pay well.

The best performances come from two actors in cameo parts playing waiters in two different restaurant scenes, one of them in the aforementioned Pizza Hut sequence. The other is in a classy eatery where Hrithik cocks his eyebrow knowledgeably and identifies the red wine as foreign, only to be politely snubbed by the waiter who says it's local wine.

The above little scene sums up the wannabe spirit of "Bang Bang". It aims to be a clever slick remake of the Tom Cruise starrer "Knight & Day". It ends up borrowing all the absurdities from the original and burying them under tons of idiotic posturing by a leading man should've known better and a leading lady who is happy speaking her Hindi lines with a British accent.

Despite the enormous resources, "Bang Bang" doesn't seem to get it right. The action is motivated by an urge to impress rather than as a part of the plot. The stunts are shot in the spirit of item songs and strewn across the narrative with scarcely any room for the characters to breathe.

Director Siddharth Anand takes the Tom Cruise original out of its naturally stupid habitat and makes it look spruced up. But where is the face behind the farce?

"Bang Bang" gets the boredom quotient bang-on. The rest is all noise and fury about a diamond, Kohinoor no less, stolen Afrom a British museum. The way the thief carries the precious "diamond" (which looks like a paperweight) around in his pocket goes to show how little a certain group of filmmakers respect the audiences' intellect.

They think Hrithik dancing, singing, fighting and taking off his shirt amounts to entertainment.

Little do they know.

I'm weak-hearted, can't judge others: SRK

Bollywood 'badshah' Shah Rukh Khan prefers to avoid being judgmental about others. He says he doesn't like to judge shows and competitions because he considers himself "weak-hearted".

The actor, along with the team of his forthcoming film "Happy New Year", will soon don the hat of a judge for a one-of-a-kind reality show "Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale", to be aired Oct 11 on Zee TV. It's a promotional initiative for his film, but that doesn't change the fact that SRK hates to judge.

"I am very weak-hearted. I'm a bad judge and I'm not judgmental about others," Shah Rukh said during a press conference here Thursday.

As part of "Dil Se Naachein...", Shah Rukh, along with his "Happy New Year" team, will go on a multi-city tour, visiting Mumbai, Delhi, Indore and Ahmedabad in search of 'happy dancers'. They will be judging these dancers based on their zest and ability to spread happiness.

"I feel people who have the jazbaa (zest), those who can perform on the stage in front of thousands and lakhs of people uninhibitedly and entertain them without thinking of the complexities and technicalities of the art...will be great. I'm not a good judge. I will keep giving ten on ten," Shah Rukh said.

He narrated an incident of his past experience as a judge of a beauty queen pageant.

"I asked Waheeda Rehman-ji to tell me the marks she was giving, because I couldn't judge them (the contestants).

"I avoid judging shows and I would rather go and tell everyone that 'you're doing very well' because it has happened with me. I don't have too much talent, but people have always given me ten on ten," said the actor, who made a successful transition from TV to films.

His forthcoming movie is a heist drama, also starring Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah. Directed by Farah Khan, the film will be Bollywood's big Diwali release this year.

Katrina not choosy, calculative about script

$

Katrina Kaif says that she neither thinks about the cast nor script while signing a film and adds that her decision is influenced by her thought process at that particular moment.

"I don't calculate and choose scripts. At that moment of saying yes, I would have something in my mind that this is what I want to do," she said.

"When I signed 'Dhoom 3', I was sitting in my car. I was listening to a song and I thought I want to do something different with the songs I am doing and that I want to dance and that film ('Dhoom: 3') seemed to be the best space to do it in," added the actress whose latest film is "Bang Bang!", in which she is seen with Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan.

In fact, in her last few releases she was seen with Bollywood's top notch Khans - Aamir was her co-star in "Dhoom: 3", Shah Rukh in "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" and Salman in "Ek Tha Tiger".

When asked are you working with superstars by choice or design, she said the cast depends upon the script.

"I don't think anyone approaches me with a (pre-decided) cast. Out of my last five films, I was on board of two even before the male actors were signed on. If it's a good script, by default you would get a well known actor or big star."

"In terms of who comes with which actor, I don't see it that way. One of my next films is 'Fitoor' by Abhishek Kapoor. When he signed me on, there was no actor on board. Later they roped in Aditya Roy Kapur. That time I had not seen 'Aashiqui 2', but I didn't question the director. That is his decision, his vision and I go by that.

"When I did 'New York', Neil Nitin Mukesh was one-film-old. When I worked with Imran Khan and Ali Zafar (in 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan'), they were new. I have worked with new people as well," she added.

Actress Cherry Mardia says her debut film "Jigariyaa" is a love story based in the late 1990s and not a period drama.

"It's a love story. It is based in the late 1990s. In today's modern lifestyle where people are getting hooked to the quick break-ups and patch-ups, this is a reminder that love is honest and simple. It's not a period drama...Not like 'Jodhaa Akbar'," she said.

Cherry essays the role of Radhika, who is very sorted out in life, well spoken and well behaved. She calls it a "challenging role".

"But I am having fun with the lights and camera," she added.

Directed by Raj Purohit, "Jigariyaa" also features Harshvardhan Deo. The film is slated for an Oct 10 release.

Cherry has done many TV commercials for brands like KFC India, Tata Docomo, Limca, Maggi and Kurkure.

When asked what made her accept the film, she said: "I find myself very comfortable when cameras are on. I never wanted to be an actor after finishing my studies. I did TV. I started getting calls and offers then I auditioned for 'Jigariyaa' and now I am here. I am not nervous now. I am excited and hopeful."

Govinda is my favourite dancer: Farah Khan

$

Farah Khan has choreographed song sequences with a bevy of Bollywood stars in her over two-decade-long career. But she says her favourite dancer amongst them all is comedy king Govinda for his sheer ability to dance with all his heart.

"Govinda is my favourite dancer. I feel very happy when he dances," Farah said here Thursday at a press conference for the official announcement of new dance reality show "Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale".

The Zee TV show, which will be aired starting Oct 11, is being launched in conjunction with Farah's forthcoming directorial "Happy New Year".

While talking about the show's concept, the choreographer-director spoke about the element that impresses her most when she judges dance shows.

In the past, Farah has been associated with dance-based TV entertainers like "Nach Baliye", "Dance India Dance" and "Just Dance". But what makes "Dil Se Naachein..." different is that the "Happy New Year" team will look out for dancers who may not have the technique or training, but those who feel happy dancing and make others happy with their dancing.

Farah said: "Dance comes 'dil se'. Steps come from the mind. I believe dance should come from the soul. I've judged dance shows earlier and I know I've had to give points to the technical aspects, but my favourite ones are always those who dance with their heart."

"Dance has to give the dancer and the viewer happiness. I've never seen a sad dancer," she added.

Her new offering "Happy New Year" also has an angle of non-dancers, who dance to make others happy -- while there's a heist angle to the story. The movie stars Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah, who will feature as 'Agents of Happiness" on "Dil Se Naachein..." to judge talent in four cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Indore and Ahmedabad.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who co-owns Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is happy that several actors are encouraging different sports in the country, but he feels the only way to make the games popular is through TV.

Appreciating the efforts of actors like Abhishek Bachchan, who has invested in a Kabaddi team as well as in a football franchise, SRK said at a press conference here Thursday: "We should be supporting every kind of sport and I am glad some of the actors have come forward.

"But it can only happen through TV. Till the time a sport is not popular on TV, it won't get the required encouragement. That's the reality," he added.

The actor, who is a sports enthusiast himself and starred in "Chak De! India" -- about Indian women's hockey -- also said that sports have to reach out to a larger audience base via the digital medium, especially via the internet and platforms like YouTube.
