Actor-producer Sohail Khan, brother of Salman Khan, will this year compete in the 16th Raid de Himalaya, one of the world's toughest off-road motor rallies, event organisers said here Tuesday.

Sohail will compete in the Adventure class, an all-out speed category, Shimla-based Himalayan Motorsport Association (HMA) president Vijay Parmar said.

The rally will have 50 competitors in Rally Moto (motorcycles and quads), 41 teams in Rally Xtreme (4X4) and 51 teams in Rally Adventure. Each team in the Xtreme (4X4) category and the adventure category comprises a driver and a navigator.

Rally Adventure follows the TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) format and is considered to be the safer option for rallying while the Xtreme category is an all-out speed category and a high-risk sport.

Raid de Himalaya is one of the two Indian motorsport events listed on the off-road rally calendar of international automobile and motorbike federations -- FIA and FIM. Only 12 international motoring events worldwide are listed in this calendar.

After flag off from Shimla Oct 4, the rally will pass through Manali, Kunzum Pass, Kaza, Komik, Dhankar, Gramphoo, Darcha, Sarchu, Debring, Daat, Keylong and will finally culminate in Manali Oct 10. The prize distribution ceremony will be held in Manali Oct 11.

The rally will cover about 1,650 km through harsh and difficult terrain at 4,000m above sea level and will cross 11 mountain passes. The Raid would pass through some areas where temperature dips below 20 degrees Celsius.

Due to the recent floods in Jammu and Kashmir the rally route was revised to facilitate the ongoing relief and rescue efforts.

For his navigator, Sohail picked Pune's Rahul Sancheti, who ranks among the top motorsport navigators in the country for TSD rallying. Sancheti, 42, has earlier ranked first in the TSD categories of 2010 Raid de Himalaya and 2011 Desert Storm, two of the highest ranked rallies in the country.

Hansal Mehta's next a women-centric film?

If all goes as planned, Hansal Mehta who last directed "Citylights", will next wield the megaphone for a women-centric film.

A source close to the director said: "Hansal doesn't like to talk about his projects in their initial stage, but yes, if things go well, his next will be a women-centric film."

Asked about it, Mehta said: "It's too early to talk about it. I cannot reveal anything right now. I am still writing the script."

The director was recently in news when he announced that he may cast the National Award winning actress Shweta Basu Prasad, who was recently caught in a prostitution racket, in his next film.

Will she be in this women-centric project?

"There is too much of speculation right now. I would not want to talk about my project at the moment," he said.

Mehta had recently also met actress Kangana Ranaut and there were reports that he had approached her for his film.

But brushing all reports aside, Mehta said: "These are all speculative reports. When you meet actors and discuss things, it doesn't mean something is happening."

Filmmaker E.Niwas, who last directed "Aman Ki Asha", now plans to launch southern actress Anushka Shetty in Bollywood with his next film, titled "Juvenile".

"I have narrated the script to Anushka and she has liked it, but it's in a very initial stage right now. Neither we have confirmed anything nor have we got a confirmation from her end," E. Niwas told IANS.

"Anushka is one of the top actresses, she fits the bill (for the movie) and so we
zeroed in on her. We are in the process of (finalising) it and we will take a call by end of this month (September)," he added.

Talking about his film he said: "The film is titled 'Juvenile' and it's a multi-starrer. It's a fresh script and not a remake. It's not even a women-centric film. It has multiple stories, which get connected in the climax. I will start shooting for this film in January 2015."

Anushka is among the leading actresses of the Tamil and Telugu film industries. She is currently working in films like "Baahubali" and an untitled Tamil film with Ajith Kumar.

“Daawat-e-Ishq” has minted more than “Khoobsurat" in the past four days, but they didn’t meet the expectations of the audience, says an expert.

Anil Kapoor and his daughter Rhea had joined hands with Walt Disney Studios to co-produce "Khoobsurat", a remake of the 1980 Rekha starrer "Khubsoorat".

With a strong fan following of the movie’s lead actor - Pakistani sensation Fawad Khan - many people were expected to catch it at a hall, but going by the movie’s earnings it seems like the movie buffs were not that excited about the film that also stars Sonam Kapoor.

“‘Khoobsurat’ is picking up because of word of mouth, but it’s not been much appreciated. Since, the movie brought together Fawad, Disney and Anil Kapoor, expectations were higher. It has earned only Rs.13.75 crore in four days,” Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines told IANS.

The film is directed by Shashanka Ghosh.

Habib Faisal’s directorial “Daawat-e-Ishq” also couldn’t pull in the audience to theatres much.

It minted Rs.15.63 crore in four days, said a statement.

“It has done better than ‘Khoobsurat’, but not great,” said Thadani.

The movie’s stars Aditya Roy Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra had also gone on a food yatra to promote the film.

Annu Kapoor is a name that has become synonymous with the musical game show "Antakshari". And the National Award winning actor "feels sad" not being offered roles that involve music.

"I will always feel sad for not doing a role which encompasses music, like a music teacher," Annu told IANS.

"All the musical roles in Bollywood are given to people who don't even know the ABCD of music," added the actor, who also hosts a musical show on radio.

He attributes the connection to music to his mother.

"All my knowledge about music comes from my mother. My mother was a good singer and was well versed with classical music. Hence, I got to know about the nuances of music by listening to her," Annu said.

However, the "Vicky Donor" actor asserts that it's not only music but much more was gifted to him by his parents.

"Thanks to my mother and father, I got exposure to different kinds of literature at a very early age. On one hand, I used to read about William Shakespeare, O. Henry and on the other, I read about Ghalib, Tulsidas and Kabir," he said.

"The combination of music and literature is very rare. My mother had both. She was a scholar of Urdu, Persian and Arabic," he added.

The 58-year-old has done a bouquet of roles, including some stellar performances like the naughty inspector of "7 Khoon Maaf" and a sperm-obsessed infertility specialist in film "Vicky Donor".

And he is now ready with a line-up of seven films.

"...All the films are ready like 'Shaukeen' will release in November followed by 'Saat Uchakkey', 'Badlapur Boys' and 'Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho'," he said.

Hollywood action star Arnold Schwarzenegger has thanked producer Aascar Ravichandran for his hospitality and making his Chennai visit "incredibly successful". He also praised the filmmaker's forthcoming Tamil romantic-thriller "I" as a "dynamic film".

Schwarzenegger visited Chennai earlier this month for the audio launch of Vikram-starrer "I".

"Thank you for everything you did to make my visit to Chennai such an incredible success," the star of "The Terminator" franchise wrote in his letter to Ravichandran.

"I was proud to be part of the launch of the soundtrack of 'I' and you and your brothers all deserve a lot of credit for producing not only such a dynamic film, but also for putting on one of the best events I've ever attended," he wrote.

He mentioned that he was "blown away" by their "hospitality".

"From the incredible hotel to the delicious food, the visit was perfect. But the icing on the cake was the event. I have been to the Oscars, and the Golden Globes, and every event you can imagine. Let me tell you something - they could all learn from how you stage a production," he wrote.

"The whole event flowed perfectly, and the energy there could have powered all of India. The bodybuilders were a fantastic touch and made everything organic. I couldn't help but take the stage after that performance, because I knew it was the perfect time," he added.

He also wrote that he would like to work with the producer "again in the future".

Directed by Shankar, "I" also stars Amy Jackson, Suresh Gopi and Upen Patel in important roles. It will release around Diwali.

Katrina Kaif has given many hits like "Dhoom:3", "Ek Tha Tiger" and "Raajneeti". And the actress hopes that she is making the right choice when it comes to scripts.

"Two films have not done well. Nobody has that answer. I just keep praying and hoping the record remains well. Besides destiny and blessings from god, it's good script sense and what the audience might like. I hope my script sense is good," Katrina told reporters in a group interview.

"I follow it and go with what I want to do. Sometimes, I may have been wrong, sometimes it's better. I have been happy for the most part with the choices and the places I have found myself in," she added.

Katrina is currently busy promoting her film "Bang Bang!" and talking about her film, she said that it's an official remake of "Knight and Day" which is "good".

"The makers were inspired by the film and even though it's just the germ of the idea they have taken, they have still done in the proper way and in the right spirit which is how it should be done," she said.

"But the film is different. There are certain sequences like the motorbike one, but the story has been adapted to what Siddharth Anand (director) wanted to make," she added.

Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor's daughter Rhea Kapoor, who had made her debut as a producer in 2010 with "Aisha", says she would definitely want to venture into the small screen.

"We are expanding as a company. We are looking into venturing into television, but a lot of time and energy is needed for that," Rhea, whose father had produced and acted in "24" - the Indian remake of the popular US thriller TV series of the same name, told IANS.

"The kind of product '24' was, a lot of time has been given for that so any other project that we take up, we will give its own time. We will do it patiently and do it well. Yes, I am certainly looking at television," she added.

Rhea's second production venture "Khoobsurat" hit the screens almost a week back and says the film's actress Sonam Kapoor, who is also her sister, has taken "more risks than any of her contemporaries".

Nawazuddin Siddiqui: Neither stirred, nor shaken by success

$
0
0

For an actor who has made his mark playing an arrogant Intelligence Bureau officer in "Kahani" and the villain with the heinous laugh in the recent blockbuster "Kick", one would expect Nawazuddin Siddiqui to project a larger than life image, or at least an air of entitlement that stars of lesser talent don effortlessly. Instead, he explains for the benefit of an audience at Chicago's Icon Theater, he is nervous, being ill at ease on a public stage.

In fact, Siddiqui said in an interview with IANS here that he has never allowed the need for an image to distort his craft as an actor. Siddiqui's unswerving commitment to the craft and his apparent detachment to stardom appears to have been honed more by his setbacks - till recently his appearances in mainstream Hindi cinema were limited to a solitary scene, often of a torture victim - than his recent spectacular commercial and critical successes.

For Siddiqui, who grew up in Budhana, a village in the Muzzafarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, a break in films was nothing if not fortuitous. When he moved to Mumbai, all he wanted were a few roles in television serials.

In a profession, where stardom is a destination, and narcissism an essential virtue, Siddiqui would seem to be a misfit. He struggled for about a decade trying to get a break and today he appears gratified, but not unsettled by success. After the success of "Kick", he has been getting several offers for similar villainous roles, but has rejected all of them, keeping a promise to himself that he would not do more than one commercial film a year.

"I knew I would get offers to play the villain after 'Kick', and I had already decided to reject all of them," he said, adding: "Fortunately, I have enough scripts to give me a choice. The success of 'Kick' will help in the marketing of other small budget independent films I have acted in. A big blockbuster like 'Kick' expands the audience for my films and makes it easier to promote them."

Siddiqui was honored at the Chicago South Asian Festival for his "outstanding achievements", where two of his films, 'Liar's Dice' (India's entry for the Oscars) and 'Monsoon Shootout' were screened, and where despite his reticence, he appeared to an audience favorite. He had earlier attended a similar festival in New York and was scheduled to attend another in Los Angeles.

One of his most cherished memories is of the time he spent with the reputed Chicago-based film critic, the late Roger Ebert, watching "Citizen Kane"(1941) , Orson Welles' landmark work. "I had seen the film earlier, but watching it with Ebert was a unique experience," Siddiqui said. "He explained the significance of the scenes, giving me a new insight into the film."

Siddiqui's exposure to films has been quite disparate - from C grade Hindi films, which were the only films screened in his village, to the best of international cinema at the National School of Drama in New Delhi. Two of the actors he watched in Budhana still remain his favorites - Dada Kondke and Joginder Shelly, who acted in such films as "Ranga Khush" and "Pyasa Shaitan". The Hollywood actors he admires are Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. While he appreciates the art of Hindi screen legends like Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt and Dilip Kumar, his favorites veer towards the contemporary - director Anurag Kashyap and Manoj Bajpai, whom calls a vastly under-rated actor.

Coming to "The Lunchbox", his film with Irfan Khan, which has been a commercial success and also won critical acclaim in the United States, he said his character in the film was modeled on a friend he has known for several years. "For me it was very easy, because I copied his mannerisms and his reaction to situations."

One of Siddiqui favorite leisure activities is to listen to background scores. "Background scores allow me an absolute flight of the imagination and I travel in my mind's eye. I do not like the scores to have vocal notes, because they act as a limitation to these flights of fancy," he said.

The craft of acting is a journey and what fascinates him is the ability to delve into himself through it. "Acting is a process. Even now, I feel I am a beginner on this path, because it an ocean and I go into its depths with a great feeling of apprehension. There are a thousand different ways to play a character for example. You have to build on each character from zero, because they have no connection to the characters you played earlier. I strive to bring integrity to the roles I play. I think this is essential for an actor. I have done that in small budget films like 'Miss Lovely' or 'Liar's Dice' or in a big budget film like 'Kick'.

Siddiqui said he was overwhelmed by the compliment that legendary actress Waheeda Rehman paid him in her recent biography. "I am her fan. I do not remember the number of times I have seen her film, 'Teesri Kasam'(1966)."

How does a village boy stay grounded through the commercial success and the wild accolades ?

Siddiqui sees no other choice. "It is my instinct to act that has brought me this far. It would be foolish of me to kill that instinct now by focusing on other activities like image building and starry tantrums." He said he is still ill at ease promoting his films at media events, but does it nevertheless because his directors want him to.

Siddiqui is supremely confident that he can thrive purely on small budget independent films. "I have limited needs. If you have unlimited desires, of course, then you have a problem."

Kareena Kapoor, who has done her share of female-centric dramas, says she wouldn't accept a biopic or a woman-oriented script just because others are doing it.

It won't be saying wrong that this year is riding high on women centric dramas. Be it Kangana Ranaut's sleeper hit "Queen" or Alia Bhatt's raod movie "Highway" or Rani Mukerji's "Mardaani" or boxing champ Mary Kom's biopic starring Priyanka Chopra in the title role - all came and conquered the box office.

When asked Kareena about the same, she said: "I have done female-centric film. I did 'Chameli' at 22, then 'Jab We Met' and then 'Heroine'."

"So, I would only do one if I really like the script and not just because everyone is doing it. That is not how I work," the 34-year-old said Wednesday at the Head & Shoulders event here.

Kareena was recently seen in Rohit Shetty's commercial hit "Singham Returns" and her upcoming films include "Happy Ending" with husband Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Gabbar" opposite Akshay Kumar.
