Sonam Kapoor's 'oh my god!' moment with Salman

0

"Oh my god," exclaimed Sonam Kapoor when she was offered a chance to romance Salman Khan in the forthcoming film "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo".

She says it was also a bit weird to work with director Sooraj Barjatya and Salman, whose romantic sagas she was hooked on to while growing up.

"Working with Soorajji and Salman is like the weirdest thing because I have grown up watching Prem (Salman's character) and it's like, 'Oh my god! Prem is romancing me.'," Sonam told IANS.

"I have grown up with his films like 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun...!' and 'Maine Pyar Kiya', and it's just like an 'Oh my god moment!'. So I had to pinch myself at times," she added.

However, this is not her first film with the 48-year-old superstar. The 29-year-old romanced him in her debut film "Saawariya".

Talking about working with Salman yet again, she said: "We have finished our first schedule. It's been seven years since I worked with him...I have known him all my life, but he is amazing. He is a professional; he has got the highest amount of IQ."

"I have never seen him being nasty to anyone or rude to anybody. He has immense respect for women and he is extremely hardworking. He is always on time, always improvising. He is one of the best actors I have ever worked with. He is always trying to do something different."

Amjad Ali Khan tours US to promote 'the sarod project'

Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and his sons, Ayaan and Amaan, will undertake a concert tour of the US through October. The concert and Khan's teaching stint at Stanford is part of what he calls 'the sarod project', an attempt to make more Americans aware of the sarod, a musical instrument, which has so far not been as well known as the sitar, popularized in the West by the likes of Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Khan will be in residency at Stanford in the spring to teach a course, "Classical music-a way of life"

"Since my childhood, I always wanted my instrument, the sarod to be able to express the entire range of human emotions...to sing, shout, whisper and cry. It has been a long journey so far and by the benevolence of the heavens, the sarod has become far more expressive than it was 25 years ago. Those moments are a profound reminder of the blessing it is to be in the position of loving-and living-your life's work. Across cultures and faiths, music has always been the pathway to spirituality," Khan told IANS.

Khan said he had a debt of gratitude to his father and guru. "For my father Haafiz Ali Khan, though, there was no question of a life outside music. Life itself was music and music was Life. And so I came to inherit from him the legacy of five generations of musicians as naturally as a bird taking to the air.

Referring to the inevitable comparisons with his sons, he said, "I never wanted to create two more Amjad Ali Khans. I gave both Amaan and Ayaan the freedom to develop their musical minds and tastes in the most natural way. Today, I feel that they are both very blessed to have a mind of their own musically and also have their distinctive flavours as artists."

Khan said that classical music will thrive under the new generation of musicians, even as the art remains unchanged. "Today we have cell phone, I pods etc, but nobody could create a thirteenth note. These twelve musical notes are the base of every kind of music in the world. In fact music has connected the whole world. We are still struggling on account of religion and power. We need kind and compassionate people in the world and I see classical music as a means to nurture such feelings," he said.

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt Friday lent support to the 'rice bucket challenge' by distributing 'biryani' packets among the needy at a programme organised here by Taj Falaknuma Palace, a hotel of the Taj Group.

Bhatt challenged young filmmaker Karan Johar to participate in a similar charity programme.

"We challenge the film industry's young and talented filmmaker Karan Johar... We have lit a lamp here. You light a lamp there. That is only way we can end the darkness from the country and the world," he said while talking to reporters.

Bhatt stressed the need to inculcate empathy towards the weak, saying the initiative has rekindled the great Indian tradition of sharing.

Taj Falaknuma in association with Sapna Iktara Foundation distributed 500 packets of 'biryani' among the underprivileged near the Cancer Hospital at KBR Park.

Girish Sehgal, general manager, Taj Falaknuma, said the rice bucket challenge is creating awareness about the need to help alleviate hunger by donating a bucket of rice.

The rice bucket challenge is the Indian version of the famous 'ice bucket challenge' of the US.

It involves donating a bucket of rice to the needy and clicking a picture and posting it online to raise awareness.

Manju Latha Kalanidhi, who came up with the idea of the rice bucket challenge, hoped that the participation of Mahesh Bhatt and support of major organizations like Taj Hotels will give a boost to the initiative.

Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee will star in his first lead role as an actor in "UnIndian", the first feature of a recently established Australia India Film Fund (AIFF). He will share screen space with Indian actress Tannishtha Chatterjee.

The romantic comedy, which will highlight the complexities of the Indian diaspora, will go into production in October in Sydney, it was announced during Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott's visit here Thursday.

Written by Thushy Saathi and to be directed by Anupam Sharma, "UnIndian" is being presented by Devendra Gupta and Yateender Gupta.

The two actors are excited.

"I'm honoured to have been cast as a lead in the first AIFF film, privileged to be working with Anupam Sharma and humbled to be working with an actress of the calibre of Tannishtha Chatterjee," Lee, who had earlier featured in a cameo in Hindi film "Victory", said in a statement.

Tannishtha is equally upbeat.

"Australia has always been a very special country for me. I love the script (of 'Unindian') and I am super excited to work with Anupam Sharma and his entire team. And Brett Lee... What can I say? Look forward to having a blast, Brett," she said.

Sharma and Lisa Duff are co-producing the film while Chandru Tolani is the executive producer.

AIFF was established in 2013 to invest in Australian films with Indian themes for a global audience.

The story of "UnIndian" is about a divorcee and single mother, Meera (Tannishtha), who meets the charismatic Will (Lee). Love is the last thing on Meera's mind, but her marital status is the subject of much discussion within her family, and she is encouraged on a seemingly daily basis to marry "a nice Indian man".

Devendra Gupta, CEO, AIFF, said: "Over the next few years we intend to inject significant funds into the Australian film and television industry, with specific focus on cross-cultural stories.

"As Indian-Australians we see it as our responsibility to both celebrate the values of and strengthen ties between the two countries."

Use star status rationally: Pakistani actor Fawad Khan

0
0

He may or may not take up a bold and intimate roles, but Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Khan, who enjoys a clean image, is clear about his responsibilities as a celebrity. The "unpredictable" actor-singer feels star status should be used "as rationally and as logically as possible".

He is a big name back home, thanks to his clean and rewarding roles in TV shows like "Dastaan", "Humsafar" and "Zindagi Gulzar Hai" and telefilms "Khuda Kay Liye". His popularity transcends the border and he struck a right chord with Indian audiences with the same shows.

Now the 32-year-old is set to take this further with his Bollywood debut "Khoobsurat", again a clean family drama.

Asked why he chose a family entertainer for his debut, he said: "You do certain projects, play certain characters and present it to the audience because you tend to educate them.

"Celebrities, as public figures, have an opportunity to use their status as rationally and as logically as possible. It is a very dangerous position and when you take on that responsibility you have to take a lot of things into account."

Will he accept bold or intimate roles?

In his response, he pointed out the difference between presenting something crassly and with class.

"There is a difference between vulgarity and aesthetics. When any such thing comes to me, and if I feel I am ready for it, you never know... I am unpredictable.

"The ball game is open, but I will play a little safe... it's not hypocrisy," he said reminding his character in "Zindagi Gulzar Hai".

So far, a number of Pakistani artists like Ali Zafar, Veena Malik and Humaima Mallick, among others, have tried their luck in Bollywood but none could attain stardom.

Fawad is pretty open ended about success or failure.

"Everyone fears a financial crisis. And that matters to me as well. You have to keep your house running.

"I have had minimum expectation from my work even back home, but I have been fortunate in many ways. No one in my family is into music or films. For me, it has been an immense journey. You tend to learn a lot.

"I don't think about what's going to happen tomorrow, because if I start doing that I will tend to limit myself," he added.

Directed by Shashanka Ghosh, "Khoobsurat", a remake of the 1980 superhit film, will see Fawad romancing Sonam Kapoor, who is central to the story.

When asked if he was sceptical about debuting in a female-centric story, he said: "It has its advantages and disadvantages, but choice matters at the end of the day. There were also male-centric films offered to me, but I wanted to try this.

"There are a lot of interactions between these two characters (Fawad and Sonam). Even if you have 15 minutes to be part of a project, you can do a lot with it. It depends on how you take what's given to you," said Fawad, who made an impact as second fiddle to Shan in "Khuda Kay Liye".

I hope to kill girl-next-door image: Parineeti Chopra

0
0

Actress Parineeti Chopra feels perturbed when people refer to her as the quintessential 'girl-next-door' of Bollywood. She hopes that with her forthcoming films "Kill Dil" and "Daawat-e-Ishq", she will be able to break that stereotype.

In an interview, Parineeti has shared insights about working in "Kill Dil", on being stereotyped as the 'bindaas bubbly' girl and dating rumours.

Excerpts:

Q: What's it like working with Shaad Ali in "Kill Dil"?

A: I think I am in awe of Shaad. When I got the offer, I was happy I was going to work with the director of "Saathiya" and "Bunty Aur Babli". But now that I've got to work closely with him, my love and respect for the person that he is, has touched the sky. He is is a joy to work with. No matter how much the stress on the sets, he's always in a good mood. When a director is not temperamental, then the actor looks forward to going to the sets every day. For us actors in "Kill Dil" - Ranveer Singh, Govinda and me, Shaad is not just a fantastic director but also a friend. When we finished shooting we partied together.

Q: Ranveer and Shaad are very close friends. So were you the outsider in the beginning?

A: Oh yes, for sure! I already shared an equation with Ranveer. I used to manage his career when I was working for Yash Raj Films. He was also my first co-star. But I didn't know Shaad at all. But within five minutes of meeting him, the ice was broken. It's not difficult to get along with Shaad.

Q: He's an introvert and you're an extrovert?

A: Shaad is not an introvert! He talks a lot. He is constantly joking and laughing.

Q: So after Rani Mukerji are you the new 'Babli' in Shaad's cinema?

A: Ha ha. I hope not. I am not at all the bindaas bubbly type in Shaad's film. I am very different in "Kill Dill" from the way I am seen in my other films. That's what we all from the 'Kill Dill' team believe. So far I haven't done anything that's glamorous, be it 'Shuddh Desi Romance' or 'Hasee Toh Phansee', I've so far pretty much played the normal working class girl.

Q: I think slotting you as the girl next door belittles your versatility?

A: That's what I feel too. Whenever I am asked this, I've to spend half an hour explaining why I feel I don't need to be slotted as the girl-next-door. Like when I am asked, 'Oh, you excel at playing the loud Punjabi girl'. The funny thing is, I've only played Punjabi in my first four films released so far. I was not Punjabi in 'Ishaqzaade' or the subsequent films.

Q: Then why this perception?

A: Maybe some people think just playing loud characters makes me Punjabi. But if you think about it, the girl I played in "Hasee To Phansee" was very different from the girl in "Ishaqzaade". I hope "Daawat-e-Ishq" and "Kill Dill" kill that image.

Q: You seem to have worked with all the younger actors. Now do you look forward to working with the Khans and Kumar?

A: I am doing a film with Saif (Ali Khan). I am very excited. I don't plan too far in the future.

Q: What about a boyfriend. One never hears of you being linked with anyone?

A: Oh, there is one link-up, with Maneesh Sharma - that's always there. That rumour never goes, maybe because I spend a lot of time with him, even go out with him. Over here if you are seen with the same man more than once, you're presumed to be involved with him. But the truth is that I haven't really found a person to be in a relationship with. I am looking forward to that.

Q: I am sure there's someone waiting for you out there. We have Mr. Yash Chopra's word for it?

A. In that case he better come out in the open quickly!
