Call me a flirt, but don't tag me: Ranveer Singh

$

Ranveer Singh has his ways to impress - he is smart, witty, charming and has a natural flair for acting. The young Bollywood actor, who is often called a flirt, says he doesn't mind this, but he admits he has a problem with tags.

"I'm just generous with my compliments. I tend to see the beauty in everyone. I don't hold back in expressing my feelings and that's why I think all these traits of mine add up to me being tagged a flirt... Which is fine," Ranveer said in a group interview.

"It's not that I have a problem with being tagged as a flirt! I have a problem with tags. You define and limit people with tags. Each person is complex and infinite," he said.

Thus, his song "Kya karun oh ladies, main hun aadat se majboor" gels well with his ways!

The actor has been seen flirting with actress Sonakshi Sinha at promotional events for "Lootera", which released Friday.

The on-screen couple was not bereft of dating rumours, but giving his side of the story, Ranveer said: "I have great chemistry with her. I remember that there were rumours of us seeing each other even before 'Lootera'. We have a friendly relationship."

"She is easy to work with. She has great ease and effort by the way we work. I kind of learn from her to be more easy about my work. she is a spontaneous actor and understands that films are about capturing life's moments...she's tremendously gifted."

"Lootera", a period drama directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, spells an old world charm. Ranveer sincerely believes Sonakshi was the "best choice" for the part.

"She fits the character. No one can pull off that old world charm and look. She can, with her look and mannerisms, completely transport you into believing that she is from that era," he said.

The going was not so easy for the young actor, who admits he was in a "do or die" situation when he stepped into showbiz.

Ranveer, who had no godfather to fall back upon in the industry, made a successful debut with Yash Raj Films'"Band Baaja Baaraat" in 2010. It's been a rollicking innings ever since - "Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl" and now "Lootera", as well as other plum projects in the offing for the 27-year-old.

"I think I made a strong start and I knew that was important and I knew that I will not get many chances. It was do or die for me. I had to make a good first impression and I managed it," Ranveer said.

He believes that his effortless portrayal of Bittoo Sharma, a street-smart boy, helped him get the visibility he wanted.

"A lot of good work is coming from that perception which people formed of me from my first film. I am happy that I was able to make a mark," Ranveer added.

Having said that, the actor admits delivering good work consistently is vital.

"(I know) It is about delivery after this. Gone are the days of surviving on your persona," he said.

For now, he is doing good - with movies like "Ram Leela" and "Gunday" in his kitty!

Four generations to greet Chandrashekhar on 90th birthday

$

Four generations of family members will gather here Sunday to greet grand old actor Chandraskhar on his 90th birthday and make it a memorable occasion for the legend, known for films like "Kali Topi Lal Rumal" and "Baradari".

Unlike in the past, when his birthdays were big parties with top Bollywood personalities joining to sing "Happy birthday to you", Chandrashekhar has requested a quiet affair this year.

"I can't handle so many guests and would not like to disappoint anybody," Chandrashekhar advised his son Ashok Shekhar, himself a veteran film and television personality for the past four decades.

Born July 7, 1922, Chandrashekhar worked in some 112 movies since his debut with "Aurat Teri Yehi Kahani" in 1954.

Over the years, he was seen in several prominent movies with top directors in various roles ranging from lead to character. Some of his film include "Surang", "Rustam-E-Baghdad", "Street Singer" , "Basant Bahar", "Barsat Ki Ek Raat", "Kati Patang", "Sharaabi", "Shakti" and "Ajnabee".

Later, Chandrashekhar made his own movie, "Cha, cha, cha" with Helen as his leading lady and it went onto become a musical hit. He later made "Street Singer".

He also portrayed the character of Sumantra in Ramanand Sagar's epic tele-serial, "Ramayan", and appeared for his last role in "Khauff" before retiring from Bollywood, son Ashok said.

Since then, he occasionally watched the black-and-white telecast of his earlier movies as a hero on various television channels.

"He regularly chats with people like Dilip Kumar or Pran and reminisces about the good old days... He feels very upset whenever he hears of any of his colleagues passing away, like Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Rajesh Khanna ans others," Ashok said.

Though frail, Chandrashekhar continues to be a disciplinarian in all aspects of life and maintains his good health.

"But, he loves to indulge in a leisurely six-seven course full meal lasting upto 100 minutes, which he savours watching TV or reading," Ashok smiled.

Another favourite hobby is writing letters - postcards, inlands, airmails - to family members, old friends, admirers and even casual acquantainces.

"My father does not use a mobile, and is not comfortable with emails... So, one of our biggest household expenses is on stationery and stamps for his dozen-odd daily letters. Nobody minds as it keeps him happy and 'in touch' with everybody," added Ashok.

Chandrashekhar felt very sad when his wife of 72 years Pushpa died in 2010 and wished she was alive with him to celebrate the platinum jubilee of their marriage this year.

Now, his name in the industry is carried forward by son Shekhar, grandsons Shakti Arora (currently seen as doctor Onir in popular TV serial 'Pavitra Rishta') and well-known ad filmmaker Vishal Shekhar.

During his heydays, Shekhar saab, as he was revered by all colleagues, was one of the industry leaders taking part in various social-charitable-community initiatives during natural or manmade calamities hitting the country.

'Policegiri' over the top ear-splitting fun (IANS Movie Review - Rating: ***)

$
0
0

Film: "Policegiri"; Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Prakash Raj, Prachi Desai; Director: K Ravi Kumar; Rating: ***

Indian cinema is like a massive bouquet of wildflowers of different colours and smells. You really can't judge "Policegiri", Sanjay Dutt's hefty homage to hero-giri completed before serving the remainder of his prison term, against the soft gently-undulating movements of the week's other release "Lootera". If Vikramaditya Motwane's film is soft-petalled rose, "Policegiri" is a wild cactus flower from the desert.

Why cactus? The landscape is populated with pricks, you see.

It's a roaring 21-gun salute to the traditional mainstream cinema's ongoing obsession with the corruption-cleansing cop who goes on a rampage. The anti-establishment figure from Prakash Mehra's "Zanjeer" has been slyly transformed into the khakee-coloured law-enforcer with shades of grey.

Like Ajay Devgn in "Singham", Akshay Kumar in "Rowdy Rathore" and Salman Khan in "Dabangg", Sanjay in "Policegiri" is a morally ambivalent do-gooder who bends rules to restore order in an inherently anarchic lawless town somewhere on the Andhra Pradesh border (hence the thick accents of junior artistes who seem to have seen better 'daze') run by a powerful goon-politician

That the buffoon of a goon is played repeatedly by Prakash Raj is a boon. This talented actor from Priyadrshan's unforgettable "Kanchivaram" plays the same rowdy idiosyncratic neta in almost every Hindi remake of a South Indian cop-on-a-cocky-trail remake. And he revitalises the character each time!

Here in "Policegiri" Prakash Raj is a howl as a music-loving ganglord. In various self consciously staged confrontation scenes with Sanjay, Paraksh Raj is seen playing different musical instruments, from the piano to the tabla, quite badly we may add.

"I don't claim to be Mohammad Rafi in singing, but I am Mohammed Ali in my brute power," brags Prakash Raj's villainous character Nagori Subramnayam in scene after scene.

Well, good for him. Be warned the heroic adversary is formidable. Like Salman in "Dabangg", Sanjay's cop character is quirkily immoral. We are not supposed to judge this bovine cop adverserly just because he collects money wrapped in a newspaper from the gana-wala goon.

Flitting in and out of this tale of the goon-like coop and the gana-gata-goon is a romantic association between Sanjay and Prachi Desai. Age difference be damned, they even have a discreetly-done suhaag-raat scene where Prachi is allowed to make fun of Sanjay's dhalti umar(advancing age).

Ask Sanjay if he cares. He seems to sink into the fun quotient of the barbed jugalbandi with Prakash Raj without bothering with histrionic one-upmanship.

The fun part of "Policegiri" is that no one, not even director K. Ravi Kumar, seems to take the proceedings seriously. Even when gruesome killings happen, they are done in the spirit of a comic-book caper where the hero has forgotten his cape home and he certainly doesn't wear his underwear on top of his khakee pants.

Sanjay seems to revel in the absurdity of a crime drama where the law-maker seems to share an affinity to moral ambiguity with the law-breakers.

It is all fun to watch-loud, rumbustious, over the top, ear-splitting fun provided you are a "Singham"-"Dabangg" aficionado, and a Sanjay Dutt fan.

And provided you don't judge the film by the same yardsticks as "Lootera".

The first look of director Apoorva Lakhia's "Zanjeer" remake has been launched and the director says he is missing jailed actor Sanjay Dutt, who is essaying the role that was played by veteran actor Pran in the 1973 film.

Sanjay is currently serving his three-and-a-half-year jail term in the 1993 Mumbai blast case.

"We are missing him a lot. My film 'Zanjeer' promotions have also started. I am heartbroken that Sanju sir is not here. 'Policegiri' is also a very big film for him and we are missing him a lot," Lakhia told reporters at the preview of the Sanjay-starrer "Policegiri" Thursday.

He added: "Everybody is writing letters to him... what else can we do?"

Lakhia admits that Sanjay's absence during promotional activities is seen as a loss.

"Sanju sir is a very big star. He is liked and respected by the people a lot. There is a loss when he is not there for promotions, but we can't help it. We have to do the best with what we have," said the director, who is also a close friend of the 53-year-old.

"Zanjeer", slated to release Sep 6, features southern star Ramcharan Teja in the role that megastar Amitabh Bachchan played in the original, while Priyanka Chopra has stepped into the shoes of Jaya Bachchan.

Pulkit Samrat stressed after 'Fukrey' success

The success of "Fukrey" has actor Pulkit Samrat stressed as he is now worried about the increased expectations and pressures from audiences.

Directed by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba, the film also stars Manjot Singh, Ali Fazal, Richa Chadda and Vishakha Singh.

"I am stressed as people now have more expectations from us. So all of us in the team are happy about the fact (the success) and realise the responsibility that comes with it. We just promise to be honest and work forward with the same honesty and fun," Pulkit, who made his big screen debut with "Bitto Boss", said here in a group interview.

Pulkit, who played east Delhi boy Honey in the film, says it was tough for him to pick the nuances of an east Delhi boy.

"Thought-wise it was easy because I knew what 'Fukrey' meant. But otherwise, language and body language-wise it was tough to work on the character because all the characters are from east Delhi and the way of speaking there is very different," Pulkit said.

"So it was a bit tough to catch that. But we all just followed the director and that was the easiest way to do it," he added.

Pulkit will soon be seen in comedy film "O Teri", being produced by Atul Agnihotri.

Director Abbas Tyrewala, who worked with music maestro A.R. Rahman for his first two films, says he is not working with the Oscar-winning composer in "Mango".

"AR (Rahman) is not doing the music for the film. He's a dear friend, but there are so many demands the world is making on his music. Every year one more city gets added that wants him," Tyrewala told IANS.

Rahman had earlier composed music for Tyrewala's "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na" and "Jhootha Hi Sahi".

"There are certain realities that come with working with him and those realities sometimes involve a lot of waiting and travelling. A film with a bigger budget can afford that, but a film that is a little tight on time, and clearly because it's all newcomers, so it's a little tight on money, can't.

"Unfortunately it's a luxury I don't have. To work with somebody whom I've done great work with, this time I don't have that option," he added.

Business tie-up will bring new dynamics: Anurag Basu on Ranbir

Bollywood director Anurag Basu, who teams up with Ranbir Kapoor for "Jagga Jasoos" again after "Barfi!", will also be co-producing the film with the star and said their "business partnership" will bring "new dynamics" to their equation.

"The status is that the script is ready. There will be new dynamics this time as Ranbir and I will be partnering in business - we both are producing it. Everyone wants to work with him...so he will have to finish those two films and come to me," Basu told IANS.

He was speaking at the acting workshop - 100 years of Indian cinema: An actor Prepares - conducted by Anupam Kher on the second day of the ongoing 14th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards and weekend here.

Last year Basu's "Barfi", starring Ranbir along with Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz, not only did a brisk business at the box office, but also won him many awards. The director confesses that he did not expect so many honours.

"I was not expecting such a big response at award functions. IIFA has been overwhelming for technical awards that we received. It has been amazing," he said.

"When you don't get an award, you say it doesn't mean anything to us. But when you get it, you feel happy. As a child too, I loved keeping awards on the shelf. It gives inspiration to everyone around you as well. It is great. When I will be old, these awards will have more value," he added.

Meanwhile, the director is set to produce more films this year.

"After this, I will be announcing my next films. I have written many stories, which I will be producing and other directors will direct them. We will start shooting this year itself," he said.

There were reports that the director has bought the rights of popular crime TV series "Prison Break", but he denied it. "That was just a rumour. I have not bought the rights. I don't want to remake it as I don't want to do too much of TV."

Recently seen judging TV reality show "India's Best Dramebaaz", Basu would like to remake some old Hindi shows.

"I want to remake 'Zindagi', I would love to remake 'Tamas' as well," he said.
