"Be focussed on being a better human being, better sports people for tomorrow," he told IANS.

The "Madras Cafe" star has bought the Guwahati franchise of the Indian Super League and his home production "1911", to be directed by Shoojit Sircar, will see him reprise late Indian footballer Sibdas Bhaduri on the big screen.

Want to position myself as good looking hero: Freddy Daruwala

0

A.R. Murugadoss'"Holiday: A Soldier's Never Off Duty", a film on counter-terrorism, gives a brand new and exciting face to evil - Farhad, aka Freddy Daruwala, the winner of the Mr India World pageant and a well known fashion model. But he says he was hesitant in accepting the negative role and wants to play a "dashing man-of-the-world kind of hero".

Directed by A.R. Murugadoss and produced by Vipul Shah, the film starring Akshay in the lead role of an army officer came out last Friday. It earned about Rs.50 crore in four days of its release.

"'Holiday' was god-sent. It's a terrorist's role. And I must admit I was hesitant to do it. I didn't want to start on a negative note," said Freddy.

"But when Murugadoss sir and Vipul sir told me about the role of the terror mastermind, I was blown. The guy was an absolute normal working class type. Looking at him, you'd think he worked in a multi-national firm or as a computer engineer. They wanted to show how terrorism is nurtured in an absolutely normal working class atmosphere. I liked that. I decided to take it on. Not that I had much of a choice," he said.

Farhad is very clear on where he intends to position himself in the film industry.

"No more negative roles after 'Holiday'... My next role would be that of the leading man. I want to position myself as a good looking dashing man-of-the-world kind of hero.

"I want to be the regular guy who hangs out with friends on Saturday nights and is yet every woman's fantasy," said the actor who is married to Crystal, an American. She's a doctor and lives in the US.

"So ours is a long distance marriage. We met through our fathers who are friends and fell in love. We've been married for three years," he said.

Farhad says the distance serves his purpose well at the moment.

"Right now, I need to focus completely on my acting career. If she was here I wouldn't be able to give her the attention I want to. But she's coming here this week .We'll watch Holiday together. I am eager to know her opinion on my performance."

He feels that filmdom is not an easy place to survive for outsiders.

"When the role of terrorist was offered to me, I wasn't exactly spoilt for choices. Out here no one takes you seriously until you are from a film family, or you have big hits. I didn't qualify on either count," he said.

"I was nervous. Because I've gone through my period of false starts when I was knocking on producers' doors. They don't open doors or even a window for you out here just because you are a known face in the modelling world. I had to start from scratch," he added.

"I did an embarrassing little film which I don't want to name. I got roped into it because I had no choice. By the time the long delayed film got completed and released I had a certain name in the modelling world. They tried to cash in on my name by projecting me as a prominent part of the cast when, in fact, I had a cameo role. Luckily, the film came and went."

Farhad was also part of the ill-fated "Sher".

He trained hard to be prepared for the hand-to-hand combat with Akshay in the climax, but he is not into athletic acting at all.

"I know I won't be able to be as agile with my stunts as Vidyut Jamwal or Tiger Shroff. Besides, I am not keen on stunts and hardcore action scenes. I had to work very hard to prepare for my climactic fight in 'Holiday'," he said.

Parineeti excited about working with 'crush' Saif

0
0

Parineeti Chopra has so far not worked with any of the Khan superstars. That's about to change as she's doing a movie with Saif Ali Khan, on whom she has a crush since long.

Saif's wife Kareena Kapoor reportedly likes Parineeti's spontaneity and she thought the "Ishaqzaade" actress to be ideal for the part in the film that her husband would co-produce and play the lead in.

According to sources, the film is a romantic comedy about two vastly mismatched people who find love under extremely trying circumstances.

"I've been a Saif Ali Khan fan for years. He makes me go weak in the knees," said Parineeti.

"Even as I say it I find it hard to believe (that I'm doing a film with Saif). It will be produced by Saif's production house Illuminati. What is most interesting is that Saif's partner Dinesh Vijan will turn director with the film starring Saif and me. So I've double reason to be happy and excited."

Adding to her pleasure is the fact this would be her first film with a Khan.

"So far I've only worked with the younger heroes, practically all of them from Ranveer Singh to Sushant Singh Rajput to Aditya Roy Kapur. This is my first film with a Khan superstar. Hopefully, I'll get to work with the other Khans after this."

'Bobby Jasoos' a female-oriented commercial entertainer: Dia Mirza

0

Dia Mirza says the attempt with her new production, the forthcoming detective comedy "Bobby Jasoos", is to create a commercial entertainer that revolves around a female character.

"We've tried to make a mainstream, commercial film with a female protagonist, and which is a family entertainer...We've always noticed that a girl's character in a film is either a catalyst or just a dressing..." the 32-year-old said here Thursday at the music launch of the film at Radio Mirchi studio.

She agrees that there have been many woman-centric films recently, but all on serious subjects.

"We have seen very few Hindi films in today's time where a girl is the centre of action in a commercial, family entertainer," said Dia.

"Bobby Jasoos" stars Vidya Balan in the lead while Ali Fazal plays the male lead. The film is directed by Samar Shaikh and hits theatres July 4.

Anees Bazmee won't clash with Rajkumar Hirani, Aamir

0
0

Anees Bazmee's "Welcome Back", which is scheduled for a release Dec 19, will no longer be released that Friday now that Rajkumar Hirani's Aamir Khan-starrer "P.K." is releasing on the same date.

Bazmee is not interested in creating an unnecessary and unhealthy competition.

"My producer Feroz Nadiadwala wants us to stick to our Dec 19 release date. But I see no point in a box office tussle. I'm going to convince him to opt for another release window," he said.

It isn't as though Bazmee is not confident of his film.

"I've my own audience. But why get into an unnecessary tussle at the box office? It is bound to damage one or the other film. I'd rather wait for another opportune Friday."

"Raju Hirani is a very fine writer and director. On top of that, he is back with his '3 Idiots' leading man Aamir Khan. So there's bound to be fireworks at the box office. Why take the risk of getting burnt?"

The director is currently recording an additional song for the film which he will film in due time when the film's entire cast - from Anil Kapoor and John Abraham to Naseeruddin Shah and Nana Patekar - is available to him.

"I am in no hurry. I have no ambition to create a dhamaka (blast) for Christmas. Any Friday will work as long as another big film is not lined up for the same day," he said.

'Indian viewers looking for quality cinema'

0
0

Be it commercial entertainers like "X-Men" and "Godzilla" or a biographical drama like "Foxcatcher", there's room for a mix of all genres of Hollywood movies in India, just as there's an audience for every kind of Bollywood movie, says PVR's Sanjeev Kumar Bijli who is set to treat movie buffs with international quality cinema.

"Everything is co-existing in Hollywood and Bollywood. There's a market for everything. Just like there's room for a 'RA.One' and 'Holiday...' at a time when people appreciate 'Kahaani' and the like. It is nice and comforting," Bijli, joint managing director, PVR Limited, told IANS in an interview.

As an exhibition company with over 428 screens spread across the country and with plans to expand by 80 screens per year, the focus is to provide a variety of content - and that which whets the appetite of viewers with commercial and art house or alternative cinema.

Bijli, who manages the cinema acquisition and distribution business and programming activities of the company and also oversees the operations and the marketing, attended the 67th Cannes International Film Festival in May.

Apart from having a dekko at "great films" there, Bijli acquired "Foxcatcher", a film based on the real-life murder of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz, for PVR Pictures, the distribution arm of PVR Limited.

Other titles acquired include "Alone in Berlin", "Our Kind of Traitor", "Equals", an untitled Lance Armstrong biopic, "Legend", "Civilian", "Inversion", "American Express", "Hologram for the King", "London Fields" and "Visions".

Indian viewers are looking out for "quality", and as a distributor, PVR Pictures wishes to bring films with an "Indian sentiment" to the country.

That explains their decision to bring star-driven Hollywood films like "American Hustle" and "The Wolf Of Wall Street" at the same time that they "pushed the envelope" for movies like "12 Years A Slave", "Her" and "Nebraska" - catering to the new class of cine-goers keen on content-driven films.

Is there a growing market for Hollywood films in the country's tier-II and tier-III cities?

"No, not as much. It's more a city phenomena. We do get one or two odd requests from places like Dehradun, Bhilai and Indore...but we know audiences all over are accepting different content.

"Five years or so ago, audiences didn't have a choice of cinema, so we're trying to create that demand and cater to it by getting in a variety of content," said Bijli, pointing out the "evolved consumer interest" in Hindi movies like "The Lunchbox" and "Queen".

The next big thing on PVR Pictures' platter is "Expendables 3". The movie has been slated to release on Independence Day (August 15), and the Sylvester Stallone-starrer is likely to cash in on the extended weekend.

'Chal Bhaag' - running into deadends (IANS Movie Review, Rating: **1/2)

0
0

Film: "Chal Bhaag"; Cast: Deepak Dobriyal, Varun Mehra, Tarun Bajaj, Keeya Khanna, Sanjay Mishra and Yashpal Sharma; Directed by Prakash Saini; Rating: **1/2

To come across a film with so many talented actors all under one roof is a delightful experience. "Chal Bhaag" is one of those hectically plotted adventure stories where the fast flowing fund of ideas and words indicate the presence of minds that understand the grammar of commercial cinema.

Prakash Saini's thriller about a threesome of petty crooks wrongly framed, booked and nearly 'encountered' by desperate cops, scores high on bustle, but finally collapses under the weight of low-brow preoccupations.

The film is shot on location on the crowded streets of Delhi. In the chase sequences, of which there are plenty, we see onlookers staring startled at the actors as though trying out if these are actors or just desperadoes on the run. The film does wear a rugged outdoor feel. Hence, the camaraderie among the male actors works better than the romantic dalliance between a sullen loverboy (Varun Mehra) and a mafia don's mistress (Keeya Khanna) that is thrust into the plot.

There are some mildly amusing incidents involving cops on duty. Yashpal Sharma as a harassed cop with a nagging wife on the phone is entertaining. The very talented Deepak Dobriyal as a big-talking petty criminal with a razor-sharp tongue gets a hang of his part and has great fun with it. Debutant Varun Mehra as the sulking Romeo is adequate.

But the very talented Sanjay Mishra, so brilliant recently in "Aankhon Dekhi", is again wasted. He is one of the many characters who add to the hustle and bustle.

An interesting and original plot which moves at a hurling tempo "Chal Bhaag" has its interludes that work. But too many characters and a constant quest for a quick-wittedness makes this an exercise in breathless one-liners of the kind that comedians exchange on television.

Sample this: a distressed woman says to a cop, "My husband left home last evening to buy potatoes and he hasn't returned as yet."

To this, the cop on duty (played by another gifted character actor Mukesh Tiwari) says, "That's okay. Cook another vegetable."

Giggle during times of gore.

Neil Nitin Mukesh, who is the grandson of famed singer Mukesh, says that despite being from a film family, he had to "beg" for work in showbiz.

The actor was present at the launch of spot girl-turned-author Komal Mehta's book "Spot Girl" when he disclosed his share of hardships in the filmdom.

"When I came in the industry, I have been to every single door. I have been to every producer's door. I literally beggged them for work," the 32-year-old said here.

"Anyone I used to meet, used to say, 'Hi, hello' or 'Oh! You are Mukesh's grandson.' But nobody really gave me work. I was 22 years old at that time but I started struggling and finding work at the age 19," he added.

Neil made an impressive debut with "Johnny Gaddar" in 2007 and went on to be part of many films, including "New York", "Jail", "Lafangey Parindey", "7 Khoon Maaf", "Players" and "Shortcut Romeo".

'Bobby Jasoos' and its 'Karamchand' connect

The famous detective TV show "Karamchand" has inspired Vidya Balan's character in the detective-comedy "Bobby Jasoos," says the National Award winning actress.

"I think that in India, if we became familiar with the word detective, then it was because of (the character) Karamchand. My character Bobby is also inspired by him. But it would not be right to say it is a dedication (to Karamchand)," the 34-year-old said here Thursday on the set of reality show "Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega".

Dia Mirza, co-producer of "Bobby Jasoos", said that although the forthcoming movie has an independent thought behind it, "Karamchand" is a bit of an inspiration.

"Bobby is a completely independent thought. But yes, 'Karamchand' is one of the first detective shows we have all grown up watching and even Bobby must have...then yes, it can be called an inspiration," Dia said here.

The film, directed by Samar Shaikh, hits theatres July 4.

"Hate Story 2" is already a bold step in terms of content. Now, former adult movie star-turned-Hindi film actress Sunny Leone is set to add extra dose of oomph with her item song "Pink Lips" and the film's director Vishal Pandya is confident that her presence will help promote the film.

"It's a very special item song with Sunny Leone, which we will shoot next week. The song is called 'Pink lips'. It's a nice dance number and I am sure Sunny will certainly help to promote the film in a big way," Pandya told IANS.

In terms of boldness, "Hate Story 2" has a lot of steamy love scenes featuring lead pair of Jay Bhanushali and Surveen Chawla.

Pandya's film is a sequel to 2012 erotic thriller "Hate Story", which was directed by Vivek Agnihotri and produced by Vikram Bhatt.

The film's trailer packed with raunchy and titillating sequences hit the web space June 6 and it has already got close to 20,00,000 hits on YouTube.

Pandya admits his creation is bolder than the original movie, which starred Paoli Dam, Gulshan Devaiya and Nikhil Dwivedi.

"The feedback has been great so far. The film is bolder than 'Hate Story'. I hope the audience accepts the film the same way as 'Hate Story' was accepted," he said.

Tiger Shroff dedicates 'Heropanti' success to parents

He has made it right with "Heropanti", which minted over Rs.21 crore in its opening weekend. And now, Tiger Shroff has dedicated the success of his debut film to his father and Bollwyood star Jackie Shroff and mom Ayesha.

"I dedicate this success to my parents. My father is so overwhelmed. He has not been happy for so long and that's what my goal was to make my parents happy," said the 24-year-old whose agility in action scenes bowled over viewers.

Directed by Sabbir Khan, "Heropanti" saw Tiger with another newcomer Kriti Sanon. And everyone is enjoying the film's success.

When it comes to choose between critical acclaim and box office numbers, Tiger feels that the purpose of making a film is to provide full on entertainment to the movie buffs. So box office is his priority right now.

"I am leaning more on to the box office over being critically acclaimed because that's the true gauge on how your film is doing. At the end of the day, if more tickets are sold, if audience are coming to watch -- these things matters. Audience should enjoy the film and that's what we intended for 'Heropanti'," he said.

'Machli Jal Ki Rani Hai' - horror of horrors (IANS Movie Review - Rating: None)

0
0

Film: "Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai"; Cast: Swara Bhaskar, Deepraj Rana; Director: Debaloy Dey; Rating: None

The horror genre in Bollywood suffers because of its inability to reinvent itself over the years.

Linda Blair played the girl possessed in William Friedkin's "The Exorcist". Forty years later the very talented Swara Bhaskar gives the devilish avatar a try. She works hard on getting the twisted and contorted face and body language right. But Swara, bless her possessed soul, is let down by a tacky script and the director's inability to take the spooky genre where it hasn't been before.

It's all familiar, and not done in any way that can be considered even reasonably original. The supernatural murders attempt to be so gruesome that they end up being unintentionally funny.

A maid (more made-up than her 'maalkin') is pierced in her eyes with a hanging on the wall.

Later the hanging reappears on the wall, the blood and gore all washed away.

Admittedly "Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai" has some genuinely scary moments. There is a sequence where his wife serving him fish for dinner surprises Swara's screen-spouse.

Until his eyes fall on the fish tank and he sees their pet fish missing from the tank...

Then towards the end there is a twist in the tale, which is bound to send a chill up your spine, regardless of whether you believe in ghosts or not.

The payoff comes too infrequently, and too late.

Most of the plot is covered in what appears to be an occasion to give idle housewives and aspiring actors a chance to play out their acting fantasies.

The dialogues are delivered in unnecessarily loud voices and the sequences pile up one on top of the other without creating any coherent scheme of storytelling. The narrative follows the weather-beaten track of raising scares through shadows and sound effects.

These are punctuated by bouts of.... err, comic relief that leave you hankering for relief from the comic relief.

As stated earlier the last half-hour when the ghosts go amok as well as the preamble when the exorcist (Deepraj Rana) chases the devil across a dangerous terrain is mildly engaging.

If you enjoy watching films about ghostly possessions in normal households then "Machhli Jal Ki..." might of some interest to you.

But the horror genre in Bollywood needs a revamp.

Fast.
