"Instead, it was very comfortable," for Ali.

"She is easy going and there was no awkwardness that she is a married woman and such a senior actress. Maybe it was because of the workshops that we did together before we started shooting," he added.

The Eden Gardens' green turf here was deluged in a sea of purple as nearly 30,000 fans waited to welcome home team Kolkata Knight Riders, winners of this year's Indian Premier League.

A troupe of dhaakis (drummers) and tribal dancers added to the frenzied atmosphere inside the arena. Fans clad in KKR jerseys matched steps to the beat of drums and waved around flags and flyers.

Widow remarriage relevant everywhere: Mahesh Manjrekar

Filmmaker-actor Mahesh Manjrekar, who shot and completed the Hindi-Tamil version of his Marathi film "Kaksparsh" while contesting the Lok Sabha election as a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidate, says that he remade the film becuse the issue of widow marraige is relevant everywhere.

"It was tough. But I am first and foremost a filmmaker. Even if I had won the elections, I would've continued to make films. Even while I was fighting election, I was a filmmaker first," said Manjrekar who lost the election.

"Kaksparsh" is Manjrekar's first Hindi film in four years.

"To me making films in Marathi was every bit as exciting and challenging as Hindi. The only reason I decided to remake my 'Kaksparsh' into Hindi was because the issue it addresses of widow remarriage is relevant in every language," said the director of Hindi films like "Astitva" and "Vaastav".

He has replaced his favourite actor Sachin Khedkar from the Marathi original with actor Arvind Swamy in the Tamil remake.

"I needed someone with no fixed image. Someone who would look convincing as a idealistic patriarch in a Brahmin family. I've cast Vaidehi Parshurami as the widow. She has done a part in one of my earlier Marathi films," he said.

"I've remade 'Kaksparsh' in Tamil because the Kokani culture and the Tamilian backdrop are similar," he added.

Ilayaraja has composed the music for the Hindi and Tamil versions of "Kaksparsh".

"Raja sir saw the original 'Kaksparsh' and he was on. No one said no to me. Theme-wise 'Kaksparsh' is among the most emotionally rich films in recent times. I haven't remade it for its commercial potential. I just felt it was a story that needed to be told to a wider audience," says Mahesh who has no regrets about losing the Lok Sabha election.

"We all wanted the BJP to win and to that extent the elections were a success for everyone," said Manjreka adding that he would continue his association with MNS chief Raj Thackeray.

After making a promising start with "Filmistaan", Nitin Kakkar is hopeful of materialising his plans of making a black and white movie on Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto's stories and finding producers for his dream project.

"I wanted to make my debut with a black and white film but unfortunately that script never took off. I wanted to adapt Manto's stories. There were five short stories which I wanted to adapt in one story."

He hopes that the "Filmistaan" buzz will help him find producers for the project.

Still determined to make the film, Kakkar said, "As and when things will happen, I'd love to make them as those stories are very close to me."

"Yes, the entire film will be in black and white that's the big criteria and that is why I was not getting producers also. People thought it's a very festival thing to do and may not work commercially. I hope 'Filmistaan' helps me to make this film. But, you never know what will happen," he added.

Meanwhile, Kakkar has been signed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra to direct his next film and he says he will take forward the Manto project after that.

"Yes, I am doing Mehra's next film and I am not allowed to talk about it. So that's my next project and post that I will think about Manto."

His "Filmistaan", featuring Sharib Hashmi in the lead, is coming out June 6.

Filmmaker Vipul Shah attributes his success to his wife Shefali Shah and says that they don't mix their personal and professional life.

When asked when do we see him directing Shefali, a versatile actress, he said: "I will approach her only if I have something that will justify her as an actress. Besides, we both don't mix our personal and professional life."

"I think that unless and until you have a strong support system, you can't achieve what you are set out to. She has been very solid with me, she stood by me. Had she not supported me, I don't think I would have been able to do whatever I am trying to do. Her contribution has been immense," he added.

Right now Shah is busy promoting his "Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty".

Directed by R. Murugadoss, the film featuring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles will hit the screens Friday.

As far as future plans go, reports indicated that Shah will be directing the "Namaste London" sequel soon.

When asked about the same, he said: "I am not too sure about 'Namaste London' sequel or some other film will go on floor. This year or early next year I will be starting my own film."

Title was suggested by Dilip Kumar: Biographer

Bollywood thespian Dilip Kumar's biography finally has a title and it will be released by singing legend Lata Mangeshkar at a grand event here June 9.

Said author Uday Tara Nayar: "The title 'Substance & The Shadow' was suggested by Dilip saab. The 'substance' refers to the actual person behind the legend and the 'shadow' is the mythical image that has come to surround his persona."

"Substance And The Shadow" would be released in the presence of all the biggest actors and directors of Hindi filmdom.

Born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan, he entered filmdom with the 1944 release "Jwar Bhata" and after that he went on to give classics like "Madhumati", "Shaheed", "Devdas", "Andaz", "Amar", "Mughal-E-Azam", "Ram Aur Shyam", "Karma" and "Saudagar".

His last film was "Quila" in 1998.

The long-awaited biography, which traces the 91-year-old's life from birth, will be released at the elaborate function by Lata, who is likely to sing a few lines of Dilip Saab's favourite song "Allah tero naam".

"It's the song that Yusuf saab would ring up Lataji and ask her to sing whenever he was restless. She would always oblige her Yusuf Bhaiyya. Lataji came to visit Dilip saab recently. He immediately recognised her and exclaimed, 'Meri choti bahen mujhse milne ayee hai'.

"She fed him his evening meal with her own hands. Sairaji (Dilip Kumar's wife and yesteryear actress Saira Banu) just watched the historic moment. We both feel no person is as worthy of releasing the book as Lataji."

Joining Lata on stage to release the book, would be Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan.

Shah Rukh Khan, whom Dilip saab and his wife regard as a son, won't be able to attend.

Aamir will recite a poem on Dilip saab's honour written by Prasoon Joshi.

Amitabh, who worked with him in "Shakti", is expected to speak about his regard for the thespian.

Lata and Madhuri Dixit will light the inaugural lamp, while Shaan and Javed Ali will sing a medley of Dilip Kumar hits arranged by composer Lalit Pundit.

Another highlight of the evening would be the audio-visual showing rare never-seen intimate moments of Dilip Kumar's life with his wife and family.

Shedding light on the event, Nayar said: "It's been a 10-year journey to put together the authorised biography of Yusuf saab. We've finally done it. It couldn't have happened without the active support of Yusuf saab and Sairaji. They helped me piece together the life of a man who is not just the greatest actor in the country but also a father-figure for me."

Dilip Kumar was crowned the Tragedy King of Bollywood for playing doomed lover in films like "Andaaz", "Baabul", "Mela", "Deedar" and "Jogan".

Amid a shower of pink confetti and deafening roar, superstar Shah Rukh Khan Tuesday lauded the tremendous love and support of the city's fans for the Kolkata Knight Riders as he partied and threw kisses during a grand felicitation ceremony at the Eden Gardens here.

The home team, flanked by team owners Shah Rukh and Juhi Chawla, paraded the golden Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy for the over 50,000 sports buffs in the historic arena, while around 1.5 lakh people stood outside, unable to make it to the stadium.

The crowd went wild as King Khan, donning a hat, blew kisses, waved and did a few steps of his popular song "Lungi Dance" atop an elevated podium.

An exuberant Juhi walked with the players as KKR's anthem "Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo" was sung in the background by singer Usha Uthup.

"I don't think any other state or any other country in the world has this kind of support or love for sporting heroes. So thank you Kolkata for supporting us through thick and thin.

"I thank you on behalf of the team. We will keep up the hard work. We enjoy your claps as well as your admonitions," said the Bollywood Baadshah, who reached the venue nearly three hours late due to a technical snag in his flight yet drew tremendous applause from the adoring crowd on his arrival.

Parodying his famous dialogue from the film "Don", the superstar said in his inimitable style: "Don ko agar koi pakad sakte hain toh woh KKR supporters hain (Only KKR's supporters can catch the elusive Don)."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who virtually conducted the show, hugged and congratulated SRK for the team's stellar performance. "Thank you for the marvellous win," she said.

"We thank Mamata-di for being kind to us always. You make it feel as if it is our own house," SRK said as he touched Banerjee's feet and later planted a kiss on her hand.

Dressed smartly in a white KKR jersey, a ponytailed SRK cut a giant cake - modelled on the Eden Gardens - accompanied by Chawla, KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir and Banerjee.

Stars from the Bengali film industry, including actors Prosenjit, Soham and actresses Srabonti and June Maliah, upped the glamour quotient even as Shah Rukh took centrestage.

Singers Uthup and Anik Dhar belted out a steady stream of chart toppers. The crowd joined in and matched steps. A troupe of dhaakis (drummers) and tribal dancers added to the frenzied atmosphere.

The Baadshah shook hands with the folk artistes and took bows. Chart toppers from his films like "Don 2" and "Chennai Express" kept up the tempo.

SRK shook a leg to the hit "One Two Three Four" from "Chennai Express" as the damsels of the Bengali film industry including June Maliah joined the impromptu performance.

A standout fashion trend dominated the red carpet of the 2014 CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Fashion Awards: Fringe cut dresses, gowns and tops.

It seems fringe details are the current favourite with celebrities like Olivia Wilde, Jaime King and Olivia Palermo wearing them, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Wilde showcased her amazing post-baby body in a black one-shouldered gown that fitted her perfectly and had a black fringe overlay all over.

King chose a white Calvin Klein number for the fashionable evening, which featured fringe tiers and sheer panels. White sandals and a sleek updo completed the look.

Palermo too opted for a fringed top and skirt from Ann Taylor.

However, she accessorised the look with a mix of gold cuff bracelets, gold drop earrings, a gold choker necklace, Lulu Guinness lips clutch and black feathered strap heels.

So, will you be taking inspiration from this red carpet fashion trend and trying the look yourself?

Bengal felicitates KKR, SRK, Juhi at Eden, seven injured in stampede

$

Bollywood, cricket and politics united in a lavish ceremony Tuesday, giving a royal salute to 2014 Indian Premier League champions, the Kolkata Knight Riders, and team owners Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla at a crowded Eden Gardens here.

Amid heightened security cover, the stadium's green turf was deluged in a sea of purple as nearly 50,000 fans, decked up in sports merchandise, and waiting with bated breath since morning, erupted in joy to get a glimpse of the players flanked by SRK, Juhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

However, the scenes of merriment in the historic ground did not match the chaos outside, as seven sports enthusiasts were injured in stampedes as they clambered over police barricades to gain entry into the arena. While some fell down, others were baton charged by the vastly outnumbered security personnel.

Police denied any cane charging, but claimed six of its personnel were injured.

Though entry was made free, passes distributed were far less than the huge demand. Passes were even sold at high prices by blackers.

But the gala affair on a 64x32 foot dais at Eden was nothing short of a major Bollywood event. Confetti rained down across the arena as Banerjee entered the stadium, and King Khan's arrival after a three-hour delay due to a technical snag in his flight drew tumultuous applause.

Dressed smartly in a white KKR jersey, a ponytailed SRK cut a giant cake - in the shape of a stadium iced with the words KKR - accompanied by Juhi, KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir and Banerjee.

Shah Rukh was - as expected - the centre of attraction - as he partied and threw kisses towards the galleries.

The Knights flanked by Shah Rukh and Chawla paraded the golden trophy for the sports buffs in the stadium, while around 1.5 lakh stood outside, unable to make it inside.

The crowd went wild as Shah Rukh, donning a hat, blew kisses, waved and did a few steps of his popular song "Lungi Dance" atop an elevated podium. An exuberant Juhi walked with the players as KKR's anthem "Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo" was sung in the background by singer Usha Uthup.

"I don't think any other state or any other country in the world has this kind of support or love Asporting heroes. So thank you Kolkata for supporting us through thick and thin.

"I thank you on behalf of the team. We will keep up the hard work. We enjoy your claps as well as your admonitions," said Shah Rukh.

Parodying his famous dialogue from the film "Don", the icon said in his inimitable style: "Don ko agar koi pakad sakte hain toh woh KKR supporters hain (Only KKR's supporters can catch the elusive Don)."

The chief minister, who virtually conducted the show, hugged and congratulated SRK fot the team's stellar performance.

"Thank you for the marvellous win," she said.

"We thank Mamata di for being kind to us always. You make it feel as if it our own house," SRK returned the compliments, touching Banerjee's feet and later planting a kiss on her hand.

The splendid affair - jointly organised by the state government, Kolkata Police, Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) - was attended by a number of state ministers, former cricketers and other sports personalities and cultural icons from the state.

Stars from the Bengali film industry, including actors Prosenjit, Soham and actresses Srabonti and June Maliah, upped the glam quotient. A troupe of dhaakis (drummers) and tribal dancers added to the frenzied atmosphere.

The crowd soaked in earthy tunes of Bengali folk rock songs by Bangla band Bhoomi as slogans of "Ab Ki Baar KKR" and renditions of team anthem "Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo" reverberated across the arena.

CAB chief Jagmohan Dalmiya felicitated each of the players, in addition to team owners Juhi and husband Jay Mehta. He presented the team with gold rings weighing over 11 grams.

This was followed by Kolkata Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Paurkayastha and celebs handing over mementoes, scarves and trays of Alphonso mangoes to the team.

Apologising to the supporters who could not witness the spectacle, Banerjee announced that in future such an event would be held at the sprawling Brigade Parade Ground - reserved for mega political rallies where lakhs or even millions take part.

Online dance academy to become on-ground: Madhuri Dixit

$

She has impressed Bollywood buffs with her versatility and acting ability through the years, but it is dance that keeps Madhuri Dixit going. The actress, who gave a new dimension to her passion by launching an online dance academy, says its success has now encouraged her to plan an on-ground institute.

"We do have plans to take the online dance academy on-ground. We decided to go digital first as it was a way to reach out to a whole lot of people from around the globe. We're in the planning stages of coming up with an on-ground dance institute," Madhuri told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Her online dance academy DancewithMadhuri.com was launched in February 2013, and it was gradually launched as a mobile App.

The actress, a trained Kathak dancer, was happy the platform has emerged as a "community".

"We realised we could spread the joy of dancing easily via the digital medium and as many as 100,000 people are enrolled. Besides, it's easy - you can be carrying a smartphone always and learning dance at any time of the day and anywhere.

"You can be sharing and uploading your videos, and earning incentives and badges. It's a community, really," added the mother of two, who became Bollywood's box office queen in the 1990s courtesy films like "Dil", "Saajan", "Beta", "Khalnayak" and "Hum Aapke Hain Koun!" and "Dil To Pagal Hai".

Where there is dance, there is Madhuri.

While the plans for extending her dance-based venture are still on her mind, what's keeping her occupied is the new season of dance reality show "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa", where celebrities, paired with a professional choreographer each, compete with one another.

Judging the show for the fourth time in a row, the 47-year-old is excited about the new twists, additions, innovations and the contestant line-up this season, which will be co-judged by filmmaker Karan Johar, choreographer-director Remo D'Souza and for the first time, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Ukranian dancer and winner of "Dancing With The Stars 2014".

"We will be strict this time! Getting eight, nine and 10 on the scoreboard won't be easy any more! But I will give my opinion on whatever good I see.

"Also, since we have a new judge Maksim, a Latin ballroom dancer, it will be interesting to know his take on the contestants' dance," she said, sounding upbeat about the show, which goes live Saturday on Sony Entertainment Television.

Madhuri says viewers should watch out for some interesting challenges and surprises that will be thrown at the contestants, which range from former cricketer S. Sreesanth to a dancer par excellence a la Shakti Mohan. The line-up also includes a host of actors.

"They will dance with holograms, with cutting-edge technology; we'll switch choreographers some day; we may have a vertical wall...all of that...and a Lie-o-meter on the sets for fun," she said, barely able to contain her excitement.

What about the film front?

After her comeback projects "Dedh Ishqiya" and "Gulaab Gang", her fans want more of her.
But Madhuri says: "It's all 'Jhalak...' for now. Everything else, later."
