Was expressing my terror: Nargis on screaming expletives in video

Nargis Fakhri was seen screaming expletives in a video recording during the shooting of "Main Tera Hero" and she said that she was scared and expressed her terror.

Laughing in embarrassment Nargis explained, "I was in terrible pain and I was on only half a harness. For the rest of the support, I was supported by my co-star Arunoday Singh in mid-air.

"Arunoday is a dear friend and someone I've known from the time I came to India. He's a great guy. I know I can depend on him. I was expressing my terror. Why that was turned into a video for public consumption, I don't know. I don't understand."

Nargis is heard using four letter words in the video.

She protests, "I've heard other actresses abusing. Quite a few of them have interesting mouths. But they make sure there are no cameras to capture their candid moments. I still have to master the image thing. Sometimes I feel I am an alien in Bollywood. I am living the way I want to. I am glad I don't have to lie and pretend."

Salman Khan frenzy hits Warsaw

From being followed by fans everywhere to getting wide media coverage - the filming of Bollywood film "Kick", which stars Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez in the lead roles, has generated frenzy in the Polish capital.

Director Sajid Nadiadwala, who is shooting the film's climax here, had no inkling people would react like that when he parked himself in the city for the shooting.

Wherever he goes to shoot, a mixed crowd of Indians and Polish fans of Bollywood films follow him. They also chant "Salman, Salman" whenever the Hindi movie superstar comes on the set.

Shooting is in full swing for the past 10 days and Gazeta Wyborcza, the largest newspaper here, is giving wide coverage to the shooting. It has put four journalists on the job.

Private Polish TV channel TVN also gives big coverage to the "Kick" unit, which is expected to wrap up the shooting by the end of the month, almost every day.

"The day is not far when Warsaw can be known as Warsaliwood for the Bollywood producers. The locales and natural scenic beauty would prompt Bollywood to select Poland for their outdoor shootings.

"The (production) cost is much cheaper and the civic authorities are cooperating generously. A city like Warsaw has more than 20 five star hotels and there are 30 Indian restaurants. The stars and the crew can have food of their choice anytime of the day or night. Young and beautiful Polish girls are ready to work as extras in the item numbers," wrote Michael Wojytczuk in Gazeta Wyborcza.

Anna Kalata, a former labour minister and vice president of the Indo-Polish Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IPPCI) and J.J. Singh, the president of the IPPCI, believe that once the film releases and if it is a commercial success, many Indians would like to come to Poland as tourists as it happened in Spain after the release of Zoya Akhtar's "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", a few years ago.

"Poland is changing fast and for the better. Cities like Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk, Poznan and Wroclaw have wonderful infrastructure. A city like Lodz has the world famous film institute where Andrezej Wajda, Krzystof Zanussi and many other famous directors had started their film training.

"Polish authorities are keen that Poland should be recognised as an important country internationally," added Singh.

Meanwhile, Pawel, a Polish journalist, in his tongue-in-cheek style has offered a screenplay a la Bollywood movie. He wants to use the same cast as Nadiadwala has in "Kick".

In his proposed story, Salman will act as a chef in an Indian restaurant, situated in the centre of Warsaw and he will bail out a Sri Lankan illegal migrant Jacqueline from the clutches of a Pakistani terrorist, Randeep Hooda.

So far neither Salman nor Nadiadwala have shown any interest.

It seems they have enough on their plate as they want to release the film by the end of July.

IIFA debuts in US - set to enliven Tampa Bay with Bollywood stars

The 15th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards, an annual celebration of the multi-million dollar Hindi film industry abroad, in its US debut this year, is ready to lend Bollywood's colour, glamour and splendour to the city starting Wednesday.

The gala will be "bigger and better" than ever before, said its organiser.

With names like Madhuri Dixit, Shatrughan Sinha, Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Hrithik Roshan, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Farhan Akhtar slated to attend the gala, along with Hollywood celebrities like John Travolta, Kevin Spacey and reportedly Ang Lee, chances are, the conjecture may just turn out to be true.

In a tete-a-tete with IANS ahead of the event, Sabbas Joseph, director, Wizcraft International Entertainment, the event's organiser said: "For a very long time we had the US in mind, but we were waiting for the right time."

"We were very clear that only when we are completely ready, will we go to the US. This time, we are absolutely ready! So I can assure you that the 15th IIFA will be the largest event and it will be bigger and better. We'll be celebrating the event on a very large scale," Joseph said.

The gala will be held for four days. It will begin this year with the introduction of IIFA Stomp, a free-to-all public party offering "a taste of India". With an entertaining mix of Indian food, music and handicrafts, the party will be held Wednesday at the picturesque Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park which overlooks the Hillsborough river.

Then, there's the IIFA Rocks, an exclusive night of music and fashion; IIFA Magic of the Movies and Technical Awards; and the main IIFA Awards night, to entertain the diaspora and fans of Indian cinema from across the globe.

The main awards night, to be hosted by Shahid and Farhan Saturday, will be staged at the spacious Raymond James Stadium, and tickets for it have cost fans anything between $75 and $3,000 per person.

Joseph says the ticket sales have been phenomenal.

"Tickets were being sold in advance and the records have been phenomenal this year. Whichever region IIFA has been held in earlier, there has been an increase of 30 to 50 percent in profit every year. This year, it's only going to get better," he added.

Veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha will be honoured with the outstanding contribution to Indian cinema award.

"Shatrughan Sinha's contribution toward Hindi cinema is huge. His role in the industry is outstanding," Joseph said of the actor-politician, who is known for films like "Kalicharan", "Blackmail", "Dostana" and "Shaan" in his over four decade long acting career.

A highlight of the the awards night will be a livewire performance by dancer par excellence, actor Hrithik Roshan.

"He will be performing in the US after a decade, so it's going to be very exciting for everyone. I can't reveal on which songs he will be performing, but it will certainly be great," Joseph said.

As far as awards are concerned, filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's National award-winning film "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", a biopic on former athlete Milkha Singh, is leading the nominations race with a presence in 10 categories.

Since the IIFA platform goes beyond the dance and drama associated with cinema, there are other highlights like the IIFA Expo, a celebration of Indian art, culture and tradition. According to the official website of the event, it's going to be "like a never before Bollywood shopping experience".

There will also be the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum, where the theme is 'Indo-US Partnership: A Catalyst for Economic Growth', and a Master Class Panel will see Bollywood's very own Vidya Balan share the stage with Kevin Spacey.

The four-day extravaganza has been heavily promoted across the country since the past few months, giving the event a much needed impetus in its first time in the US.

So, with the stage now set, let the celebrations begin!

Chetan Bhagat's 40th birthday Tuesday couldn't have been made more special - Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi not just wished him via a tweet on his special day, but also posted a selfie with the author on an online microblogging platform.

"Dear Chetan Bhagat, many happy returns of the day! Sharing the selfie you took last evening," Modi posted Tuesday.

Bhagat, author of bestsellers like "Five Point Someone", "The 3 Mistakes Of My Life" and "2 States: The Story Of My Marriage", met the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Monday.

After meeting him, he tweeted: "Met #namo. You know a leader has the youth pulse when he can discuss job creation and is still up for a selfie!"

Sharing his excitement upon getting a birthday wish from Modi, Bhagat posted: "When the front-running PM candidate of the world's biggest democracy remembers your birthday and posts a selfie, have to say, it feels nice."

The author is in any case on cloud nine ever since the movie version of his book "2 States" hit the silver screen April 18. Starring Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor, the film tells the love story of a Punjabi boy and a Tamilian girl.

Deepika's retro bun - only six steps away

Actress Deepika Padukone is a sure shot winner when it comes to fashion and beauty, and most women want to ape her style. Grab a comb, clips and serum to achieve her retro bun hairdo, says an expert.

Navyata from Hindi fashion channel FOMO (Fashion on My Own) shares how to create a retro bun inspired by Deepika:

* Start by brushing your hair to detangle it so that it is easier to style. If you have frizzy hair, apply a small amount of serum to detangle and smoothen it out.

* Neatly divide a small portion of the first half of your hair and clip it up roughly.

* Take a bump-it hair volumiser and place it on the crown area of your head and cover up the bump-it by taking sections of hair from the two sides of your head and turn it into a half pony-tail. To keep it steady, secure it with a couple of bobby pins. If you are unable to find a bump-it, you can simply back comb the front half section of your hair to volumise it and then secure it with a good quality hair spray.

* Gently smoothen the surface with a brush to remove the tangles and use hairspray to hold it in place.

* Take hold of the loose hair sections and twist them into a bun. Use hair pins to keep the bun in place and bobby pins to keep fly away strands at bay.

* To complete the look, gently remove strands of hair from the bun to frame the face and create a softer look. Secure the hairdo with a texturising hair spray.

E-voting must be introduced for travellers: Rakeysh Mehra

Reacting to the ongoing hullabaloo about the feasibility of having a Bollywood awards extravaganza during elections, acclaimed filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra says the need of the hour is a system of e-voting.

The Bollywood biggies are set to attend four-day IIFA event, starting Wednesday in Tampa Bay, Florida and voting day for the Mumbai Lok Sabha elections falls Thursday.

"There will be millions of people who will be travelling on and around the date of voting, not just people who are going to IIFA. I feel a system of e-voting needs to be put into place, enabling citizens to cast their vote from wherever they are," Mehra told IANS before leaving for Tampa Bay, Florida to attend IIFA.

Several celebrities are scheduled to fly to the US city for the four-day gala, but some of them have delayed their plans until Thursday when they will cast their vote before they fly to Tampa Bay.

"IPL (Indian Premier League) has gone to the Middle East, and that event is 10 times bigger than IIFA...so, there should be a way to go forward and it is important to introduce e-voting online in a secure way.

"People will be travelling for all reasons - personal, business or professional. It is not about IIFA or IPL, it is about organising ways and making it simpler and convenient for people to cast their vote from any place," he added.

At IIFA 2014, Mehra's National award-winning film "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" has won nine technical awards, and it stands a chance to win awards in 10 more categories.

Mehra is also upbeat about conducting a talk with his "inspiration" Narayana Murthy, co-founder and executive chairman of Indian IT giant Infosys, as part of the business forum during the IIFA Weekend and Awards.

I have not divided Bollywood: Modi

BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi Tuesday refuted allegations that Bollywood was getting divided because of him.

"I am not very familiar with Bollywood. I did meet some people after I became chief minister but that was purely for occupational reasons, though everybody is entitled to their views," Modi told ABP News in an interview.

Last week, an appeal by some Bollywood artistes asking people to vote for a secular candidate created a controversy as supporters of Modi rejected the view, revealing the fissures in the film industry.

Stating that he does not get any time to watch Bollywood movies, Modi said that in the last decade, he had seen only three films.

"I have seen 'Paa', 'A Wednesday' and a film on Swami Vivekananda in the last 10 years," Modi said, admitting that the film on Vivekananda was "very good" and had an inspiring message for the youth.

On his daily routine, Modi said he wakes up at 5 a.m. and sleeps for only about three and a half hours a day.

"I am a workaholic and can't sit idle. I have to keep on doing something or the other. For me, my work is the best form of relaxation," he said.

We need not make violence sexy: Mallika Sarabhai

$

Violence in the mainstream cinema is depicted in such a manner that it looks sexy to children, so does the misrepresentation of "macho" heroism, said social activist and noted dancer Mallika Sarabhai.

Sarabhai has been addressing social issues using the medium of dance and theatre, and speaking at a conference here Thursday on "Arts and Media: Problem or Solution", the 59-year-old said films like "Dabangg" are affecting the psychology of children.

"Banning or censoring is not going to work in our society. What we need is acknowledging problems and finding ways of addressing it," she said.

"We need not make violence sexy through our films. Also the meaning of word 'macho' means someone who is rowdy and loud, and sensitive men are considered to be whining," she added, saying Salman Khan's character in Hindi movie "Dabangg" has created a role model that is eroding the minds of children.

Echoing similar sentiments was Vandana Kohli, filmmaker and photographer, who said "role models are watched by millions and they cross the line of verbal etiquettes several times".

"Bollywood should take responsibility for characters they are creating because they do affect the audience, especially children. As movies have the power to reach out to a larger audience, it leaves a lasting impression on the minds of people," she said.

"Verbal violence is also overlooked in our society and it is the first barrier we need to overcome. We are not looking at the language children are using these days. This comes from the role models when an IPL match is watched by millions of Indians, and a cricketer uses abusive language, people think it is fine to use these abusive words," she added.

According to Kohli, media-created "role models" are keenly watched and observed by their fans, and how they do or behave have a deeper psychological effect on people, especially children.

Recollecting how in several Bollywood movies, the hero confronts the girl in order to woo her, and press her against him and teases her, Kohli emphasised how this situation makes "eve teasing" a cool quotient.

"Mainstream cinema doesn't understand the power it has. When you watch such a scene on the big screen with audio and visual medium lending their support, young boys buy these ideas," she said.

"Many young boys still have no idea how to approach a woman. So these exaggerated, stereotypical ideas of romance and irrelevant love should have no place in our cinema," she added.

Huge potential for animation in India: Experts

$

The animation industry has become a sought after profession with talented animators taking it to the next level. The market is enormous, said industry experts, who gathered here Friday to share their experiences and to prepare a future roadmap for the sector.

A dozen of the country's top animators are in the capital city for the next two days to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Toonz Animation, which operates from the Technopark Campus here, and will be interacting with the students of animation.

Master animator Sekhar Mukherjee says events such as these can give a fillip to the industry.

"Even though the experts who have come for the event are into competition with one another in the animation industry, events like these definitely help the animation industry because only when there is open interaction everyone learns...even the budding talents who seek a career in animation, get to learn from experts," Mukherjee told IANS.

He said "with the first hurdle now crossed, the need of the hour is for industrialists and even the state government to chip in. Every state in the country has a rich culture and these could make interesting topics for stories that could be tapped into and for these funds are required and the industrialists could come for financing animation projects.

"Moreover, the state government should see that the curriculum is revised to bring in animation as this is a combination of art, design and technology besides a fantastic tool for communication also," added Mukherjee, a product of the prestigious National Institute of Design and who now heads the animation department there.

Toonz Animation is an example of a hugely successful story in the animation industry in the country and today all leading cartoon channels have programmes produced by its staff here.

"There is no dearth of stories in our country and that is the most important element in animation. Now with this industry almost completing two decades and with adequate talent in our country, I strongly feel that the investors should trust the creators and invest with confidence. If it happens, the sky is the limit for the animation industry here," said Gayatri Rao, founder director, Animagic India.

Sreeja K.Nair, who joined Toonz Animation in 2002 after her post-graduation in economics, has seen her career grow. She is now a key person in the texturing department where the sartorial designs of each and every character that Toonz Animation creates, are decided.

"The prime requisite for an animator is that he/she should be an artiste, an actor and above all that they should take this profession seriously. Today for an animator, there are numerous freelance opportunities available and also work is there online too," Nair told IANS.

'Revolver Rani': Kangna Goes Beyond 'Queen' in powerhous performance (IANS Hindi Film Review)

$
0
0

Film: "Revolver Rani"; Cast: Kagna Ranaut, Vir Das, Piyush Mishra; Directed by Sai Kabir; Rating: *** 1/2 (3 and a half stars)

Hail the female. Kangna Ranaut plays the quirky queen of all she surveys. She lords over her doomed anarchic and wretched kingdom like a doped and excitable "Pan Singh Tomar".

It is a dangerous world out there in the Indian heartland. Specially for women who have to fight prejudices and betrayals on so many levels.

In a scene straight out of a street play, Kangna, playing what seems like a cross between Uma Thurman in "Kill Bill" and Seema Biswas in "Bandit Queen", Kangna tells the mother of a young girl: "Teach her how to shoot a gun . It's the only way she can survive."

"Revolver Rani" is a deeply satisfying tribute to many things at the same time. Director Sai Kabir (who has previously made an unreleased film) pays a hefty homage to many filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap, Quentin Tarantino, Mehboob Khan and Shekhar Kapoor. And yet for its derivative aspirations, "Revolver Rani" is a fiercely original piece of cinema, crafted with compelling concentration and impassioned intuition. The mayhem is meticulously executed. It serves as the evocative backdrop for the life of an outlawed bandit-politician.

Kangna plays a woman of substance who, going by her high-octane energy level, seems to be guilty of substance abuse. And that's the least of her crimes. Alka Singh, as played by Kangna in her second powerhouse performance this year, is the female goon who speaks most eloquently with the nozzle of her gun. There is an awkwardness to her 'Chambal ki boli' that dissolves when she has to converse with a 'bandook ki goli'.

Kangna's askew personality and her lisping halting dialogue delivery give her character that cutting edge with distinguishes a remarkable performance and takes a potentially powerful performance into the realm of the truly inspired.

I wonder what Alka Singh would have been if Kangna had not played this feisty women! Alka's epic saga is partly cartoonish, partly a documentary on bandit-politics spliced together to make the woman an outrageously endearing outlaw.

At heart, "Revolver Rani" is a heartbreaking love story of a crass, powerful female politician who falls for a sleazy selfish Bollywood aspirant. We can see what a jerk he is. She can't. As she goes through a sham marriage and a very real pregnancy with the certifiable asshole, Kangna's character's blind love turns into frustration and fury in front of our eyes.

Vir Das plays the wannabe star who ends up as a trapped fluttering toyboy to the lusty politician, with an intimacy and incredulity that make the character appear both cheesy and pathetic and yet comic.

In the lust-relationship, Sai Kabir reverses the traditional gender equation making the female hero the sex-hungry predator and the male companion an object of her lust. In the second-half when Alka Singh wants to turn her infernal kingdom into a nursery school of paradisical normalcy, the director indulges and pampers her womanly instincts without mocking the trigger-happy woman's sudden swerve into softness and femininity.

It is a dangerously balanced-out world field with outrageous deceit. Sai Kabir pulls out all stops to let his protagonist swim in the tides of blood and anarchy. Wading through the muck, Alka endeavours to find herself an utopian balance in her unbalanced world. The end is a shocker, as it knocks off the bottom from Alka's world and lets her slide into the abyss without prejudice.

"Revolver Rani" is a film of baffling contradictions and anomalies. It starts with 10 minutes of dreadfully self-conscious political humour and then steers adroitly into Alka's love life with a cocky contempt for conventional signposts of female empowerment. The feminist hoardings all all bypassed in favour of creating untried rules of unorthodox womanhood.

More than the political intrigue, I was enthralled by Kangna's growing love for the thoroughly undeserving "Cham-cham" (yup, that he cheesy nickname for her toy boy). The desperate passion she feels for this cad is so palpable as to make love appear as the greatest crime in Alka Singh's world of pervasive outlawry.

Director Sai Kabir's film is wacky goofy and ultimately acutely tragic. The proceedings in the plot are as unpredictable as its kinky capricious female hero's untameable curls. All steel guns and iron bras, "Revolver Rani" is raunchy, sexy, quirky and fey. Giving a feverish vigour and velocity to Kangna's Phoolan-on-steroids act are Aarti Bajaj's unsparing editing and Suhas Gujarathi's state-of-art cinematography.

Like Kangna's Alka Singh, there is no artifice in the technique applied to the proceedings. "Revolver Rani" is as real as comic book heroines can get.

And if that seems like an irreconcilable merger of two separate worlds, then so be it. Commercial Hindi cinema has come of age.
