Yashpal brings new life to character in 'Manjunath'

0
0

Yashpal Sharma, known for playing characters with grey shade, will again be seen as a villain in forthcoming film “Manjunath” and director Sandeep Varma says the actor's involvement in the script helped to improve his on-screen character.

Viacom18 Motion Pictures’ project "Manjunath" is based on the real life story of young IIM-Lucknow graduate Manjunath Shanmugham, who was killed Nov 19, 2005, allegedly after he threatened to revoke the licence of a Lakhimpur Kheri petrol pump owner for selling adulterated fuel.

On receiving the script, the "Gangaajal" actor impressed Varma with his understanding of the villain’s role.

“He told me that the character needed some enhancement and together we rewrote Golu’s journey, envisioning the integrity of a villain’s character who is a central part of the film,” Varma said in a statement.

Yashpal plays petrol pump owner Golu who lives in Lakhimpur Kheri. He is a family man with great ambition, but is impatient about life. He thinks everyone and everything can be bought, until he meets Manjunath.

The film will release May 9.

Actor Ronit Roy, who plays a drunkard father in the recently released "2 States", says if it weren't for producer Karan Johar's conviction, he may have not even done the movie.

Ronit, who features in a key "special appearance" in the film, has been getting praise galore for his performance as Krrish's (Arjun Kapoor) father.

"And to think I almost didn't do '2 States'! It's all Karan Johar's conviction I went with. Credit goes to him," Ronit posted on his Twitter page.

"I'm overwhelmed by all the appreciation you have showered on me for my performance and the film '2 States'. Thank you sooooo much. Wow! What a tremendous reaction to me in '2 States'. Never would have thought. Can't thank you guys enough," he added.

The actor, who has had a successful transition from the small to the big screen, also featured in Johar's "Student Of The Year".

"2 States", co-produced by Johar's Dharma Productions and Sajid Nadiadwala's banner, is directed by Abhishek Varman. Starring Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor, the movie tells the love story of a couple belonging to two different states.

'Revolver Rani' to battle it out with 'Kaanchi', 'Samrat..' for top slot

0
0

After “Queen”, Kangana Ranaut is back at the box office as “Revolver Rani” and she would battle it out with musical “Kaanchi” and thriller “Samrat & Co.” for the top honours when the threesome hit the screens Friday.

Kangana loves to push the envelope by stepping into unconventional roles and she continues the trend with “Revolver Rani”, which sees her in a never-seen-before avatar of a don shooting guns and mouthing dialogues in profane language.

With her brilliant performance in “Queen”, Kangana not only raised the bar for her contemporaries but for herself too thus raising fans' expectations from her. Debutant director Sai Kabir describes her character as “ugly” and non-glamorous.

Kangana will face stiff competition from Rajeev Khandelwal, another brilliant actor, in “Samrat & Co”. A lot is riding on the film -- it is the first feature film as a producer by Kavita Barjatya, known for making TV shows. Besides, Rajeev too needs a big hit.

The flavour and setting of the two films are completely different -- Tigmanshu Dhulia-produced “Revolver Rani” is set in the backdrop of the notorious Chambal area, while detective movie “Samrat & Co”, featuring Rajeev as a suave investigator, has been shot in the scenic Himachal Pradesh and director Kaushik Ghatak has used VFX to make the plot interesting and engaging.

Subahash Ghai is all geared to give them a tough competition with his directorial venture “'Kaanchi”, the third film in the fray. Sans big names, the film, starring Kartik Tiwari and Mishti Mukherjee, has a rural set up and has been shot in hill station too. Its tone and tenure is serene.

The film marks Ghai's comeback after five years.

'2 States' collects Rs.38.06 crore ; Emerges Biggest Hit of 2014

Abhishek Varman's debut directorial "2 States" managed to collect Rs.38.06 crore in its opening weekend. The audience is loving it for its slice-of-life portrayal of two lovers from different states of the country.

While it made Rs.12.42 crore on its opening day April 18, "2 States" managed a business of Rs.12.13 crore and Rs.13.51 crore on the next two days, according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

The movie, distributed worldwide by UTV Motion Pictures, released in nearly 2,400 screens worldwide. In India, "2 States" released in over 2,000 screens and internationally, it released in close to 350 screens in 30 countries.

Starring Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor as the couple in love, with Ronit Roy, Amrita Singh and Revathy in supporting roles, the movie was not just marketed aggressively, but is also getting good footfalls in theatres due to positive word-of-mouth.

Co-produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala, the film tells the story of a couple belonging to two different states. It is based on Chetan Bhagat's bestseller "2 States: The Story Of My Marriage", and also shows the coming together of two families from distinct cultural backgrounds.

It appears to be doing well in international circuits too.

Noted trade site Box Office India reported, "The film has emerged the biggest hit of 2014 and has the potential to be the first SUPER HIT film of the year depending on how well it can sustain over the next ten days or so."

An ecstatic Karan shared his thoughts on his first outing with producer Sajid Nadiadwala, ''Touch wood, there were no glitches whatsoever throughout the making. The journey on 2 States was seamless and another reason is the fact that debutant director Abhishek Varman, who got his break with this film, is from Dharma’s core team. My faith in Chetan Bhagat’s book and in Abhishek’s adaptation stands validated.I had an instinct on Abhishek right from from the start. And now that he has delivered, I feel like a proud parent."

Subhash Ghai roots for film artistes contesting polls

Coming out in support of film personalities throwing their hat into the ring for the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, renowned movie director Subhash Ghai Monday said the fraternity has produced some good political leaders.

To buttress his point, Ghai referred to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa and late Congress MP Sunil Dutt's contribution to politics.

"People can come from all spheres. Members of parliament include engineers, doctors, and artists and so on. Politicians work for social cause. Jayalalitha is an example of a good leader who is from the film fraternity. Then Sunil Dutt ji was also there," Ghai told IANS to queries about celebrities contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

Asked whether he has plans to direct any movie centred on politics in the near future, Ghai said: "As a storywriter I react to the situation. Kal civil war hogi ya Swaraj hoga I don't know. Jo hogi shayad uss par film banaunga. (I don't know what is in store for future, whether a civil war or self rule. Depending on the scenario, I might make a film.)"

Ghai was in the city to promote his upcoming film "Kaanchi".

All films are a reflection of times: Tanuj Virwani

0
0

One-film-old Tanuj Virwani says all films are a reflection and product of the times that "we live in".

The youngster, who made his debut in 2013 with Joe Rajan directed "Love U Soniyo", which sank without a trace at the box office, will now be seen in "Purani Jeans", which talks about friendship and the protagonist believes that "friendship is like a pair of old jeans - the older it gets, the better it becomes".

The 26-year-old feels that the theme of love, family and friendship is "universal", "but the treatment meted out to the film ('Purani Jeans') is quite different."

"At the end of the day, whether it is we as human beings or films that we make, it is the product of the times that you live in. The films made in 1970s, 1980s and 1990s were all diversely different. We all are in now 2014," Tanuj told IANS in a telephonic interview.

"This is my second film. There is no college or campus in our film. It's a film that salvages life and youth," he added.

Directed by Tanushri Chatterji Bassu, "Purani Jeans" also stars Aditya Seal and Izabelle Leite in the lead roles. It is set to release May 2.

Talking about his camaraderie with his co-stars, he said: "Most of us are newcomers and it was important for us to share a good screen chemistry. I got along with everyone, be it Izabelle, Aditya and all the others in the film. If you are genuinely involved with someone that translates on the screen. You cannot fake that on the screen."

The actor, who worked as an assistant director in "Aao Wish Karein" and "Chance Pe Dance", also shares the screen space with his mother and actress Rati Agnihotri "Purani Jeans".

Although he has so far done only two films, he feels an actor should not get stuck with the same kind of roles.

"I'd like to do a nice thriller, something edgy, something racy, because it is important to keep surprising and exploring yourself. Otherwise the audience will get bored of you easily," he said when asked about his choice of roles in future.

He takes inspiration from Aamir Khan and believes that an actor needs to reinvent himself.

"Whether it's a commercial or a feature film, Aamir Khan constantly reinvents himself and that is very inspiring for me personally."

He has a few films in his kitty.

"I have been signed by Eros Entertainment for a three-film contract. 'Purani jeans' is the first of the three films," he said.

Although he has started his journey in filmdom as an actor, but his long term dreams include going behind the camera to say "cut".

He said: "I have always had this 'keeda' of wanting to be a director. I have made a lot of flop films, which I had written, directed and even acted in some. Not in the near future, but at some point I would like to explore filmmaking."

I missed Yash uncle terribly: Rani on wedding

It's been a fairytale life for Rani Mukerji, and it continues to be so for the newly married actress, who exchanged vows with filmmaker Aditya Chopra in a "beautiful" ceremony in Italy. She says she missed having her husband's late father and filmmaker Yash Chopra around for the D-day.

The wedding took place Monday with only the couple's close friends and family in attendance, said an official announcement from the Aditya-led Yash Raj Films (YRF) banner.

Rani, who has maintained silence on her relationship with Aditya for several years, has now opened up about the "happiest day" of her life.

"I would like to share the happiest day of my life with all my fans all over the world whose love and blessings have been part of my journey all these years. I know that all my well-wishers who have waited for this day will be really happy for me," Rani said in a statement.

Talking about the ceremony, she said: "It was a beautiful wedding in the Italian countryside with just a few of our close family and friends with us. The one person I missed terribly was Yash Uncle, but I know he was there with us in spirit and his love and blessings will always be with Adi and me."

For the 36-year-old, it's like a fairytale.

"I have always believed in fairytales and with god’s grace, my life has been exactly like one, and now as I enter the most important chapter of my life - the fairytale continues," she added.

Rani started her acting career with "Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat" in 1997, after which she featured in movies like "Ghulam", "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Hadh Kar Di Aapne", "Saathiya", "Chalte Chalte", "Hum Tum", "Veer-Zaara", "Black", "Bunty Aur Babli", "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna".

In more recent years, she has been seen in projects like "No One Killed Jessica", "Aiyyaa", "Talaash" and the actress is due to feature in "Mardaani".

My next a departure from children's films: Nitesh Tiwari

0
0

After co-directing "Chillar Party" and directing the recently released "Bhoothnath Returns" - both with children at their core - Nitesh Tiwari is getting ready to try his hand at a completely new genre.

"It's just a coincidence that my first two films featured kids in a central roles. My next film would be a complete departure from these two films," Tiwari said.

He is happy that "Bhoothnath Returns", starring Amitabh Bachchan and Parth Bhalerao, has been warmly received by the audiences.

"We were working on a concept that wasn't time-tested. We could've lost the audience. But they've accepted the film so warmly. It feels good," said Tiwari.

Tiwari, who earlier worked with a bevy of child actors in "Chillar Party", feels connecting with children without patronizing them is of utmost importance.

"It would've been suicidal to bring Parth into the project unless I was sure about him. God forbid if after shooting I realized he wasn't right for the role. It would've been impossible to replace him," he said.

Tiwari has earlier gone through the heartbreaking process of asking child actors to leave while shooting.

"It's happened a number of times while I was shooting my ads. Children who sparkled when I met them, froze in front of the camera. It was very painful to replace them. During this film or my earlier feature 'Chillar Party', I couldn't afford the luxury of working with kids who couldn't deliver what I expected them to.

"In 'Bhoothnath Returns', we were working on a very tight schedule. Any glitch would have been destructive," he said, adding that Parth was not the first choice for the part of Akhrot in "Bhoothnath Returns".

"After many auditions I had zeroed in on two kids. One of then Owais lost the role by a narrow margin. I offered Owais another role in my film as I didn't want him to feel left out. Rejection at that young age can be an awful burden to bear on those little shoulders," he said.

Tiwari says he chose Parth as he he already had a Marathi film behind him and knew how to occupy camera space in a feature film.

"Also more importantly, Parth wasn't intimidated by Bachchan saab. That was very important. The boy Akhrot and the ghost had to share screen space throughout. The child actor had to be relaxed in Bachchan saab's company. Parth performed without the least self-consiousness," he said.

The director also gives the Big B full credit for taking the child under his wings.

"He treated Parth like a friend."

Tiger's stunts are for real: Makers have recorded proof

0
0

Sajid Nadiadwala, who is not one to take risks when it comes to risky stunts, has decided to make elaborate videos of all of Tiger Shroff's stunts in "Heropanti" - just to prove they are real.

A source close to the project said: "The very first time when Sajid saw Tiger doing his martial arts, Sajid knew it was beyond anything the Indian audiences had ever witnessed. Sajid decided to let Tiger choreograph some of his own stunts.

"Every action sequence has been videographed to show a frame-by-frame breakup of the stunts so that the audience doesn't think the action is staged for the camera."

These action videos will be released one after the another closer to the film's release, much in the same way that song sequences are put out.

The source added: "Tiger has contributed substantially to the action scenes. Though Sajid has offered to put Tiger's name in the credits along with the stunt directors, Tiger has politely declined the offer.

"He doesn't want the action department to feel he has muscled into their territory. The truth is, Tiger could've taken the action to an even higher level. But the stunt co-ordinators made sure that the audience remained convinced about the action scenes."

While Tiger refrained from commenting on this, his proud mother Ayesha Shroff said: "It took a huge effort to make the action sequences look effortless. Tiger has worked really hard. We're overwhelmed by all the feedback."

Nadiadwala said: "Besides the recorded videos, we'll be taking Tiger to reality and dance shows including 'Comedy Nights With Kapil', where Tiger will perform some of his stunts live. We hope he will convince audiences his stunts are not just too good to be true, but also too honest to be untrue."

Make `Bhootnath Returns' tax free, poll panel urged

0
0

Amitabh Bachchan-starrer “Bhootnath Returns” -- a movie that emphasises the importance of voting -- should be made tax free so that its message reaches a wider audience, the Election Commission has been urged.

In a petition to the commission, a media organisation here said that tax free status for the film, which is doing well at the box office, would only be appropriate as the country is in the middle of a general election.

"The state governments should support the strong social message that emanates from the film. Granting tax-free status to this film would make people aware about their rights as voters like making voter ID cards or not treating polling day as holiday,” the petition by U4U Voice said.

In the film, a ghost (played by Bachchan) gets friendly with a child and then contests elections against an evil and greedy politician.

"Declaring the film tax-free at this stage would only mean that more people can watch it and, thus, help spread the message across,” the petition noted.

The film details how the duo - the ghost and the child - realise the depth of issues like corruption rooted in the country and how the slum kid coerces "Bhoothnath" to fight an election.

Haven't shot with Jude Law yet: Nargis Fakhri

0
0

Nargis Fakhri has returned from the US after shooting her first international film entitled "Spy". Directed by Paul Feig, the film will see Nargis in her first action role.

Apparently, Nargis kicked some serious ass in Los Angeles.

Speaking about her role and the film Nargis said, "I don't know why some sections of the Indian media have written that I've shot with Jude Law. Because I haven't! He is in the film, but I haven't shot with him yet."

"There are also Jason Statham and Melissa MacCarthy in 'Spy' with me. I can't reveal what I am playing until the producers make their announcement. But I can tell you they're planning a global campaign with actors from various parts of the world. I'd be representing this part of the world," added the actress who made her Bollywood debut with musical blockbuster "Rockstar".

Nargis loved working with Paul Feig.

"He's directed 'Bridesmaid' and 'Heat'. He was amazing to work with. I've to go back for about a week's work. All I'll tell you about my role is it's action-packed."

Nargis says Bollywood and Hollywood are completely different experiences. "I am not saying one is better than the other. I enjoy both. But Hollywood is far more organised than Bollywood."

Nargis returned from Hollywood to the heartening news that her Bollywood film "Main Tera Hero" is a hit.

Nargis is cautious in her enthusiasm. "I'm a little weird that way. I don't really know how to express my happiness. I am happy people liked the film. But I'm more happy for Varun Dhawan than for myself. He has been very supportive. And it's his film. From first frame to last.

"As for me,I got a nice feedback on Twitter. But I got mixed signals about my own performance. Some critics have been very harsh. That's okay. I like honest criticism. I know I'm not the consummate Bollywood heroine. But I'm working hard on it."

Everyone on Twitter is commenting on Nargis's comments in "Koffee With Karan" on her "butt cheeks".

Nargis said, "I said Nargis' in Spanish means 'butt cheeks'. So my name has become a butt of many jokes. I am used to jokes about name. Let me tell you it's not easy growing up in the ghetto area of New York with a name like 'Fakhri'. I didn't grow up with Asians who could perhaps know what a beautiful surname I had. All my friends were Americans and non-Asians. They had a whale of a time with my name."

Nargis feels it's very important to not take oneself seriously.

"It's important to be able to laugh at oneself. I don't think too many do that around here.I am still taken aback by how much people comment on others. And though I may say I don't care there's always that tiny percentage of self-doubt within me created by people's perception of me. At the end of the day I do care about what people think of me. I am human."

One complain against Nargis within the industry is that her team is too interfering.
Nargis defends her team. "When I came to Mumbai I had no one to support me. My team is all that I had. It still holds true. I am struggling to find my bearings."

"2 States" has minted Rs.44.23 crore in the first four days of its release and the makers are elated. The film’s co-producer Karan Johar is ready to throw a success party but not without Sajid Nadiadwala, who is currently busy shooting "Kick" with Salman Khan in Poland.

Nadiadwala has co-produced the Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer.

It was apparently Nadiadwala who first bought the rights to make a film on Chetan Bhagat's bestseller "2 States: The Story Of My Marriage” and Karan had approached Nadiadwala to be his partner in the film.

So, Karan had called Nadiadwala to congratulate him on their partnership as well as to mention that the success party of “2 States” will not happen till he is back from Poland.

“Karan did call me and told me that the party won’t take place till I am back,” Nadiadwala said in a statement.

I'm a mamma's boy: Tanuj Virwani

Bollywood's newcomer Tanuj Virwani, who will be next seen in forthcoming film "Purani Jeans", says he is a "mamma's boy".

Directed by Tanushri Chatterji Bassu, the film releases May 2 in Indian theatres.

The 26-year-old said he's the only child and gets pampered at home by his mother and actress Rati Agnihotri who makes him his favourite chocolate Oreo milk shake when he comes home after a tiring day.

"I think I'm quite a mamma's boy. I don't have a sibling. I'm the only one. So I get spoiled and pampered at home," Tanuj said in a telephonic interview with IANS.

"It always feels nice when you come home at the end of a tiring day and mom gives me something nice to eat or she'll make my favourite Oreo cookie shake. It feels really special. It's the thought that counts," added the actor.

His mom not only pampers him, she also helps him in the promotion of his film.

Meanwhile Tanuj clarifies that his mother didn't feature in his debut "Love U Soniyo" and things have been wrongly reported in the past.

"Purani Jeans" is the first film in which Tanuj is sharing the screen space with his mother.

"I started shooting the scenes of my film 'Purani Jeans' with my mom. I was a bit nervous with the shoots, but I reasoned with myself and thought that I can use this off screen chemistry I share with my mother as an advantage and boss up the scene. I tried to treat my mother like I would any other co-star in the movie."

When asked whether he will be seen with his mother again in films, he said: "This isn't my last film. There is no hard and fast rule that she has to be in every film of mine. I'll sure be doing a lot of films where she is not going to be a part of it."
