Amrita Singh is spontaneous: Arjun Kapoor

0
0

Actor Arjun Kapoor is all praise for Amrita Singh, who plays his mother in the forthcoming film "2 States" and describes her as being "naturally gifted".

This is his second film with Amrita after "Aurangzeb" and he said: "She is the most spontaneous actor in the world. Before shooting she will be nervous…

"Once the camera is on, she delivers the best, and we would wonder how she did that. She is naturally gifted and she doesn't care so much."

Arjun made a fantastic debut with "Ishaqzaade", but his last two releases "Aurangzeb" and "Gunday" received a lukewarm response at the box office.

Talking about his performance, he said: "I am confident about my acting. The insecurity is that I hope I don’t slip and fall. But we are young and it’s going to be a long race. It’s a great time to be in this profession.”

Dad is possessive, doesn't want me to get married: Alia

0

Actress Alia Bhatt says her father and filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt is possessive about her, but adds that he has taken her on-screen kissing with Arjun Kapoor in the forthcoming film "2 States" practically.

"Like every father, who don’t want their daughters to get married, even my father is the same,” Alia said in a group interview.

“Recently, my father told us (Alia and her sister Shaheen) you all can’t go anywhere, I will lock you up in a room. He is honest and blunt about the fact that he doesn't want us to get married.

“He is not saying just like that, he means it. He is very possessive and he doesn't want me to get married. If my sister’s boyfriends get me some present, he would say - even I can get presents, I will get you two," she added.

Currently, the actress is looking forward to her forthcoming film “2 States”.

She has a kissing scene in the film and when asked about her “possessive” father’s reaction on the same, she said: “But he knows I am acting …but, if I kiss my boyfriend in front of him, he will slap me.

“It’s in the scene and I am not doing it to irritate him. It’s a family film and the scene is just for three seconds.”

Directed by Abhishek Verman, “2 States” is an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller of the same name and the actress has read the book three times.

She said: “I have to be as natural as possible. I read the book three times before we started shooting.”

Alia says that when she read the book for the first time, she felt it could be made into a good film.

“I knew Arjun was on board… but I never thought I will be part of the film. I got a call for a look test and the point being that I should look good with Arjun. I was hoping it comes to me and it did. It’s a big achievement for me," she said.

The actress, who garnered rave reviews for her performance in her last release “Highway”, says there was a reason behind doing “2 States”.

“After ‘Highway’ I wanted people to say I am an actor and that I am not here to be a star. I would not like to be five or six films old …so I want to make sure I am an actor," she said.

Honey Singh bags song with Miss India Koyal Rana

Rapper-composer Yo Yo Honey Singh, who is currently exploring the West for musical opportunities, will be composing and recording a song for Femina Miss India 2014 Koyal Rana.

The "Blue Eyes" hitmaker has been roped in to shoot a music video with Koyal.

"That is a commitment I made before my current paschim-yatra (westside journey) started. I was a judge at the Miss India pageant and after the winner was selected I'm doing a song and music video with her," he said.

Honey Singh's song for Miss India would be his only original track in recent times.

"Even the song that I did for Sanjay Leeela Bhansali's 'Gabbar' is an old number. But working with Bhansali was a dream come true," he said.

Honey Singh has written a rap number about his new association with Bhansali.

"When I was a child, I saw the Ram Leela performed on stage. Now, there is the film 'Ram Leela' ('Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela') and its maker actually wanted me to do a song for Akshay Kumar in 'Gabbar'. Akshay was one of the first Bollywood A-listers to believe in me. We gelled before we jammed together," he said.

For now, there is only the song with Koyal.

Apparently, the number that he plans with her would be completely cleaned out. It would not have any hint of naughtiness, not even one suggestive word.

V.K. Murthy source of inspiration for many, say cinematographers

0
0

The passing away of cinematographer V.K. Murthy signals almost the end of the golden phase of cinema represented by actor-filmmaker Guru Dutt. Cinematographers like Santosh Sivan, Anil Mehta and Ajay Bahl say Murthy inspired many people.

Murthy, Dada Saheb Phalke award recipient, died at the age of 90 in Bangalore.

Murthy was not a mere cinematographer. His black-and-white images in Guru Dutt's monumental masterpieces created a play of light and shade which cinematographers to this day are trying to analyse. It was Murthy who made actress Waheeda Rehman look so beautiful in "Chaudvin Ka Chand" that Shakeel Badayuni's lyrics comparing her beauty to the moon seemed perfectly justified.

Born in Mysore in 1923, Murthy began his illustrious career as cinematographer with "Baazi" in 1951. Murthy and Guru Dutt went on to collaborate in several masterpieces: "Jaal", "Aar Paar", "Mr. & Mrs. 55" and "CID", among others.

But it was Guru Dutt's "Pyaasa" and "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam" followed by "Kagaz Ke Phool" whose visual images linger to this day.

"Kagaz Ke Phool" was the first Indian film to be shot in the Cinemascope format.

Murthy's play with light in one particular song sequence "Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam" inside a near-empty film studio is to this day considered a textbook of lucid cinematography.

Till Guru Dutt was alive Murthy worked with no other filmmaker. After Guru Dutt's death (1964), Murthy did some extraordinary work in Kamal Amrohi's "Pakeezah". He also shot Govind Nihalani's historic television series "Tamas".

"Murthyji was one of the many formidable cameramen who contributed his skills in capturing 'Pakeezah'. There were other camerapersons on board - R.D. Mathur, Fali Mistry, Jal Mistry, Nariman Irani, Keki Mistry, B K Lad and others," said Amrohi's son Tajdar.

Sivan, who is also a filmmaker, felt sad on hearing of Murthy's death.

"His cinematography was always a source of inspiration for all students of cinema. His work inspired many generations. His visuals have a timeless quality," he said.

"The simplicity of the man and the greatness of his art were a source of personal inspiration for me. For a man who started as a violin player for background scores, his achievement in cinematography is a testimony to the fact that all art is basically intuitive. We've lost a true artiste," added Mehta.

Ajay Bahl, also a filmmaker, considers Murthy an abiding influence.

"The strong and magnificent imagery he created is yet to find an equal after almost half a century of evolution of the cinematic technology and image-enhancing tools. He continues to inspire and humble in equal measure," said Bahl.

Acting takes precedence for Tigmanshu Dhulia

0
0

For the next one month and more, filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia will completely turn into an actor. He will be shooting for two projects every day.

"I am reviving the days of Shashi Kapoor and Govinda who did more than one shift per day. No actor does double shifts any more. I guess I am a unique actor in every sense," said Dhulia.

"Yes, I am completely into acting for the next one month. Though that doesn't make me a complete actor! I'll be facing the camera in two mediums - cinema and television for the rest of April and half of May," he added.

While in Nikhil Advani's film “Hero”, Dhulia plays a sympathetic character, in Endemol's soap about the ups and downs in an influential business family, he is featured in a negative role.

"It's not a routine villain's role. I play a smooth operator," confides the director, who says he is nervous about the impending screen time with Amitabh Bachchan.

"I shot with Amitabh Bachchan saab for four days. Now I've to shoot regularly with him for a month. It isn't easy for even veteran actors to face the camera with this legend. So you can imagine my plight," said the director of films like “Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster”, “Paan Singh Tomar”, “Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns”.

No direction for Dhulia until the end of May.

"I start directing ‘Yaara’ from from June. The main cast is in place now," said Dhulia.

For a while, it seemed Irrfan Khan would not have the dates for “Yaara”.

"But we've managed to accommodate one another," said Dhulia.

Child actor Parth is hero of ‘Bhoothnath Returns’: Big B

0
0

Amitabh Bachchan is himself a part of “Bhoothnath Returns”, but the megastar says child talent Parth Bhalerao is the film’s hero. He calls the little boy a “commensurate performer”, who left even seasoned professionals behind with his performance.

In an interview, Big B spoke about the movie, his experience and his future projects. Excerpts:

Q. Another film “Bhoothnath Returns” (BR) is on release. This time your co-star is a child actor. From the time you sang “Mere paas aao” in “Mr. Natwarlal”, you've shared a very special rapport with your young fans.

A. 'Child is the Father of the Man', said Williams Wordsworth, and not without reason! Yes, working with children has been a wonderful experience. They are unpredictable and spontaneous, completely innovative and a joy to be with. Parth, who plays the little boy in “Bhoothnath Returns” is a commensurate performer, a mature artist and the hero of the film. Even seasoned professionals sometimes are unable to convincingly go through the gamut of emotions that this boy has in BR. He is an exceptional young man.

Q. What was Parth Bhalerao like to work with? How different is it to work with a child co-star as compared to working with an adult co-star?

A. As I just said, his performance does not look like that of a child. He performs as an adult, mature and confident and full of self-belief, completely uninhibited, a rare quality.

Q. Your association with B.R. Chopra's banner goes back to 'Zameer'.

A. Ravi Chopra (son of late B.R. Chopra) has been unwell for several years now and bed-ridden. It has been painful to see him in such a condition. Not for me or for the film or for any other, I hope that the film does well. It would give him some respite.

Q. How do you manage to keep the faith alive for so many decades?

A. I think 'manage' is a rather harsh word when we talk of relationships. In creative processes what matters is the value of the content, and of course the confidence that each party has in the ability of the other. Ravi Chopra made his directorial debut with "Zameer" and has remained a friend since then. We may not have worked together for a long time since, but the relationship has been constant. Then when he came with "Baghban" we readily agreed, followed by "Baabul" and "Bhootnath" and now BR.

Q. You're about to start “Piku” with Shoojit Sircar where you share screen space with Irrfan Khan for the first time. He expresses immense excitement at the prospect of working with you?

A. Shoojit and I have worked together very often, first in commercials that he directed, and then in a film that lies unreleased with the producers. There is a mutual respect that we share. We have discussed many subjects for feature films on and off, and now finally he wishes to make “Piku”, which we start in a month or so. I look forward to working with him again. Irfan is a talent most rare. I have loved all his work immensely. Even the work he does in commercials. I am equally excited to be in the same frame as him.

Q. Besides “Piku”, which are the other film projects that you've agreed to take on?

A. I start R. Balki's film this month and shall go on with that for a couple of months along with Shoojit's “Piku”. There is simultaneously work being concluded on the TV serial that I am doing with Endemol, Anurag Kashyap and his team for Sony Entertainment Telvision.

That shall be followed by “Kaun Banega Crorepati” and by the end of the year there will be Vidhu Vinod Chopra's production with Farhan Akhtar, being directed by Bejoy Nambiar. Sudhir Mishra's “Mehrunissa” and a few others are also on, and shall take shape early next year.

Filmmaker Karan Johar is furious over reports related to the cast of his production venture “Shuddhi”.

Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor were finalised as the lead pair of the film, but later Hrithik announced that he is not a part of it anymore.

Karan says a news report that the “Krrish 3” star is asking for a profit of the film is false.

“Article insinuating that Hrithik asked for a large percentage of profit for ‘Shuddhi’ is baseless, untrue and completely uninformed,” the “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” director tweeted Wednesday.

He was also angry over reports saying that he himself is playing the lead in the film.

“I am playing the lead in ‘Shuddhi’! Sounds ridiculous? Well as ridiculous as some of the news reports making the rounds!,” Karan posted on Twitter Thursday.
