Moon Moon Sen hits campaign trail

Former Bollywood actress Moon Moon Sen Tuesday launched her campaign as the Trinamool Congress candidate from the Bankura Lok Sabha constituency.

The daughter of Bengali screen icon Suchitra Sen, who passed away early this year, the Oxford educated Sen sought blessings at a mosque as well as a temple in Metia Narayanpur village in Bankura district.

Known as "Suchitra Sen er meye (Suchitra's daughter)" in the interiors, her calm demeanour was in sharp contrast to the aggressive body language of battle-hardened politicos as she interacted with residents in her constituency.

Sen made head turns as she stepped out of the vehicle ferrying her and Trinamool workers.

"I will try be closer to the people of my constituency," she said, attired in white and sporting glares.

The actress had earlier stated she was familiar with the area.

"Actually, I have done lot of films and jatras (folk theatres) in that part (Bankura) of the state. I have travelled a lot. I used to break into songs whenever I saw the red soil of the region," she said, reacting to her nomination earlier.

However, the actress recently courted criticism for her comments regarding campaign preparations in the summer.

"It's very difficult to look glamorous in summer but I'll see what I can do. There's no harm in that. I've done theatre and I know to combat heat. I've been to Bankura to shoot for films. I know people will accept me," she told a TV channel.

Once a sex-siren who mesmerised legions of male fans with her oomph and charisma, Sen will be fighting CPI-M heavyweight Basudeb Acharia in her constituency.

It remains to be seen whether her star-power can garner votes.

But for the people in the sleepy hamlets of Bankura, a bit of stardust is a welcome respite.

Singing their way to voters' hearts in West Bengal

$

Musicians-turned-politicians in West Bengal, who have been crooning their way to glory and entertaining people, are now using their creations to drum up support for their election campaigns.

Campaigning in the state is getting a new dimension with as many as four singers/musicians in the fray for the Lok Sabha polls.

If Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates "Disco King" Bappi Lahiri and singer Babul Supriyo are belting out their hit Bollywood numbers, Trinamool Congress candidates singer Soumitra Roy of the Bengali band "Bhoomi" and Rabindra Sangeet singer Indranil Sen are harping on the son of the soil image to reach out to voters with their Bengali tracks.

Contesting from the Sreerampur Lok Sabha constituency in Hooghly district, Lahiri has been crooning his hits ranging from Mithun Chakraborty starrer Disco Dancer to Lahiri's recent rage "Ooh la la" from The Dirty Picture.

The famed composer, credited with having synthesised disco music in Bollywood, is also working on developing a few songs to promote both his party and himself.

"Music is my soul and naturally my campaign has to be musical," said Lahiri, who ruled the charts in the 1980s and 1990s giving tunes to mega hit films like "Disco Dancer", "Namak Halaal", "Dance Dance", "Commando", and "Sharaabi" among others.

It's not surprising that hits like "Dil Ne Dil Ko Pukara", "Pari Pari Hai Ek Pari", "Hum Tum" and "Chanda Chamke" have been reverberating from all nooks and corners of Asansol where Supriyo, the voice behind the mega hits, is in the fray.

Supriyo, who wants to pay back his admirers by working for their welfare, has been humming all his memorable songs in Hindi and Bengali as he canvasses for votes.

Pitted against Congress strongman Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Sen's electoral fight from the Baharampur constituency is being dubbed as "Gaan (Bengali for song) versus Gun".

"It's easier to reach out to the people through music than to deliver hate speeches and talk ugly about the rivals," said Sen, who holds the Guinness World Record for singing the maximum number of title songs, 213, for television serials.

Much like his songs which enshrine the connect with the earth, Roy has tweaked a few of his unforgettable songs to impress the voters in Malda North constituency.

With former actor and BJP candidate Shatrughan Sinha facing a four-cornered contest for the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha seat, party workers and supporters say it will be great if his daughter, Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha, campaigns for him.

"Unlike last time, it is not going to be a cakewalk for Shatrughan. He should invite his daughter Sonakshi to campaign for him. Her star power will help him tide over the odds against him in the polls," said Bharatiya Janata Party worker Rupesh Kumar.

Mahesh Prasad, another BJP worker and fan of Shatrughan, said just a road show by Sonakshi for her father will change the situation in the sitting MP's favour.

"Her visit to the constituency is bound to change the equation," he said.

Fruit vendor Arjun Singh said Sonakshi Sinha was a big star, like her father was in the past.

"Her appeal will make a difference. We want Sonakshi to campaign for him," he said.

BJP leaders close to Shatrughan also said party workers want Sonakshi to campaign.

"It is a natural demand because star power matters. But for now, there is no such plan to invite her for campaigning," senior BJP leader Nand Kishore Yadav said.

Shatrughan's elder son Luv has been giving him company during the campaign.

Sonakshi has not been able to find time because of her shooting commitments but has taken to the social media for the purpose.

Sonakshi has seven million followers on Twitter to whom she has been sending messages in favour of her father, her mother Poonam Sinha said.

The Congress has fielded Bhojpuri superstar Kunal Singh and the Janata Dal-United a reputed doctor, Gopal Prasad Sinha. The Aam Aadmi Party's candidate is Perween Amanullah, a former minister and an RTI activist.

Patna Sahib will go to polls April 17.

Actors Jackky Bhagnani and Neha Sharma visited the Siddhivinayak temple here to thank god for the success of their film "Youngistaan".

"This is a prayer to just thank god for everything. May more people watch the film and it becomes a bigger success. We always come to god before a film's release but we have come to say thank you (now)," Jackky said here Tuesday.

Jackky, the film's lead actor, is happy with the audience's appreciation of the movie.

"It's been great...we have received good reviews. The biggest thing is that people are enjoying the film because we make films for them. If they like the film, we feel really happy," the 29-year-old actor said.

Directed by Syed Ahmad Afzal, "Youngistaan" also stars late actor Farooque Sheikh.

The film released March 28 and seems to have broken the dry spell for Jackky who has been struggling to make a place in Bollywood since his first release "Kal Kissne Dekha" in 2009.

One of the reasons why southern actress Disha signed upcoming Kannada entertainer "Bombay Mittai" is that the film offered her opportunity to travel to some never seen before places in Karnataka.

Disha is making her Kannada debut with the film.

"I love travelling and have always been fascinated by historical monuments. When I got to know that this film would require me to travel to different, unexplored places within Karnataka, I didn't want to miss the opportunity," Disha told IANS.

"Secondly, the story of the film is very fresh and close to reality. I play a character interested in travelling and photography. I felt this character would help me instantly connect with Kannada audiences," she added.

Directed by Chandramohan, the film features a host of debutants. Disha says working with them helped her pick up the language.

"I feel there's something to learn from newcomers as well. In my case, it's the language. They are highly talented and they keep me focused and always on my toes," she said.

Having worked in Hindi, Telugu as well as Tamil films, Disha feels blessed to have been accepted across multiple film industries.

"I can't differentiate my love for any particular industry. But what's keeping me going is the love of people who have accepted me in all the industries I have been associated with. I feel extremely blessed about it," she added.

Pornography should not be for the sake of it: 'Mastram' director

$

Akhilesh Jaiswal has embarked on a filmmaking journey with "Mastram", a fictional biography of the well-known Hindi erotica writer. The director, who has tried to strike the right balance with adult content and aesthetics, hopes the censor clears his directorial debut with A-certificate without any cuts.

"I am hoping that there won't be any sort of problems with the censor board. And, hopefully, the film will get an A-certificate without any cuts," Jaiswal told IANS in an email interview.

Popular in the northern part of the country for his erotic novels, the author hid behind his pen name Mastram and his real identity is still a mystery.

Asked whether the film would have a mystery element to it, he said: "For that you will have to wait till May 1 (when the film releases)," adding: "My film is a fictional account of the writer's life. Even I am curious to know who the real brain behind the book is, or the real face behind the author, as you put it."

Reasonably familiar with Mastram's work, Jaiswal who has "read a lot of" his original books, says his prime concern was that the film's content should not leave a bad taste in the viewers' mouths.

"I was clear from the writing stage itself how I want the film to look. Things can easily go wrong if you don't have your thoughts clear and in place," said the director who hails from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

"Yes, it's a fictional biography. It is very important to find the right balance and maintain it, because pornography should not look overused in the film. It should not look as if it is put just for the sake of it. It should fit in properly, as a part of the story telling."

Recently erotic thrillers like "Jism 2" and "Ragini MMS 2" did well at the box office and Jaiswal says that the genre sells at the ticket window.

"If you go through the statistics, you will find that the answer is yes," he said when asked "Does sex sell at the box office?"

He however added: "I think the film should be good and entertaining at the same time, for it to work at the box office."

Starring Rahul Bagga, who was seen in TV show "Powder" in a pivotal role as the mythical porn writer "Mastram", shot in and around Manali for a period of a month, has been in the news ever since it was announced and Jaiswal is confident about his cinematic offering finding a right connect with the audience. Tasha Berry also features in the movie.

"The highlight of the film would be that everyone will be able to relate to the characters in the film. Though it's a fictional story, it's set in the real world and the characters are relatable," he said.

Talking about the cast, which doesn't boast big names, he said that his film stars some of the finest actors from NSD (National School of Drama) and other theatre groups.

"We were making a film in a limited budget. My producers and I believed that the film could make its mark without any big stars in it. So we didn't go that route," he said, but didn't reveal the budget or release plans.

Jaiswal, who co-scripted crime saga "Gangs Of Wasseypur", chose "Mastram" as the subject for his debut film because of the curiosity surrounding the author and his personality.

"The thought of knowing the life of a person, who is so famous all across the North, crossed my mind a lot of times. Despite being so famous, no one has ever seen him or met him," he said.

"I always used to think what does the author feel and how does he react to this popularity? Was he proud of the fact that he is such a good creator of erotica or was he ashamed of the fact that he writes erotica and therefore does not want to come out in public as Mastram? These thoughts and curiosity to know about him became the base of "Mastram", the film," he added.

Slovenia to get its first Bollywood flashmob

Marion Trotté, a French filmmaker based here, is not just an Indophile but a Hindi movie buff who has been, since a year, collecting videos about events related to India, especially on the happenings in Bollywood.
Trotte' wants to host a first-of-its-kind Bollywood flashmob in the Slovenian capital to bring fans of Hindi cinema together for a documentary he wants to make. Trotté says there is a huge community of Bollywood lovers in Slovenia, a small country of just two million people in Central Europe.

A flashmob is a group of people who gather suddenly in a public place, perform an act for a brief time and then quickly disperse.
He will shoot the flashmob and and finish his movie with the event, further information on which will be soon available on the Facebook page .

The filmmaker has even uploaded a tutorial on online videosharing platform YouTube for those who wish to learn the dance steps for the flashmob. The video, posted online March 17, has already been viewed 480 times.

Slovenia has a market for Indian cinema. However, commercial distribution is now hampered by the small market size and the legal requirement that any foreign film in public exhibition must be dubbed or at least subtitled in the Slovene language. Nevertheless, film festivals and cine clubs in Ljubljana, Koper and Maribor, give screen to Indian films to listed members only.

Acclaimed film "The Lunchbox" was shown in the Ljubljana International Film Festival 2013 and in theatres around Slovenia thereafter, and some Slovenian distributors have expressed interest in tying up with Indian cinema exporters.

The RTA Agency of Slovenia is focussed on facilitating shooting of Indian productions, particularly from South India, in Slovenia locales. Five such film shoots have been done so far, while five more are planned in 2014.

"An annual Festival of Indian Cinema is being planned for 2014-2015," Sarvajit Chakravarti, Indian ambassador, told IANS. He said Bollywood dancing too is gaining popularity nationwide and several groups have evolved.

'Ragini MMS 2' has gone beyond our expectations: Sunny Leone

Indo-Canadian adult star Sunny Leone is in seventh heaven. Her new film "Ragini MMS 2" opened to a positive response that left her bewildered and stunned.

"To be quite honest, I didn't expect this kind of a response. 'Ragini MMS 2' has gone beyond all our expectations. That feels good. I feel I've been accepted by audiences. It'd a nice feeling," Sunny said before leaving for the US to be with her family.

"Ragini MMS 2", an Ekta Kapoor's production ventured helmed by Bhushan Patel, came out March 21 and earned Rs.45.88 core in two weeks at the Indian box office.

In 2013, Sunny entered Indian showbiz with controversial reality show "Bigg Boss 5" and graduated to film roles with erotic thriller "Jism 2".

However, her entry was not taken lightly by the moral police who reportedly campaigning against her presence in Bollywood, but she is not overly perturbed or hurt by the attack by the moral police.

"Hurt would be a strong words. But yes, I am surprised by how vehement the naysayers are in their opposition. I have nothing against them. But I want them to know I am working hard to make a career, just like everyone else in every profession. And 'Ragini...' is the answer to all those who thought I could do only one thing."

The "one thing" is a sportingly self-deprecatory reference to her past history as a adult-content star that Sunny is not denying.

"Everyone has a past. We all grow from one level to another. I don't understand why it is so difficult for some people to accept that I've made a natural progression from one phase in my life to another.

"Now I'm working very hard on my career as a Bollywood actress, though I am a long way from getting a hang of it. I only wish some elements would be more open-minded about my intentions."

Sunny's next level is her language.

She said: "Did I sound like I had dubbed for myself in 'Ragini MMS 2'? Congratulate the girl who dubbed for me. She made a very honest effort to sound like me.

"I did want to dub my own lines in 'Ragini...', but there were too many things happening at the same time. We all took a call that it was best to let it go and to let someone more skilled with the Hindi handle my lines."

She promises to dub in her own voice in her next film.

"In Deepak Tijori's 'Tina & Lolo', you will hear me speak in my own voice. I promise you my Hindi would be acceptable. It is very important for me to keep growing. I am constantly working towards improving myself. The effort shows in 'Ragini MMS 2', I think," she said.

However, the actress is comfortable in the Bollywood environment.

"Mumbai and Bollywood are my new home. I have my own residence, my own car and my own staff in Mumbai. Now when I go to the US, I don't feel I am going 'home'. It's like I'm going for a holiday and I'll be back home in no time at all."

"I feel we need to celebrate a success of this magnitude. How to celebrate, I'll decide when I am back from the US. But I have to confess I am not much of a party goer. You will hardly ever find me at parties in Bollywood. So far I've been too busy working on improving myself to bother with interacting with people. Maybe after my Hindi I will work on improving my social skills," she said.

Actor-producer Riteish Deshmukh, whose upcoming Marathi production "Yellow" deals with children with special needs, says films with unique concepts gain wider acceptance among Marathi audiences compared to Hindi.

"I had not seen any film on such subject and I felt that I must make the film, so we made it in Marathi," Riteish said here in an interview.

"Yellow" is Riteish's second Marathi production venture, after hit film "Balak Palak".

"I think we were able to justify this (the subject of 'Yellow') more in Marathi," the actor said.

"If we have to remake it in Hindi, then we will have to work on it or do something else," he added.

"Yellow" features Gauri Gadgil, whom the film is based on, in the lead.

Sooraj Pancholi and Tiger Shroff are poised for an an early debut, but an unlikely friendship has burgeoned between the two biggest rival debutants of 2014. They have become so close that Sooraj has borrowed Tiger's gym trainer to help get the right body tone for his action sequences.

Jackie and Ayesha Shroff's son Tiger's first film is "Heropanti", directed by Sabbir Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala.

Said Sooraj, "Tiger is fantastic with the martial arts and other forms of physical combat. I can't wait to see his stunts in 'Heropanti'. We sometimes train and work-out together. And I've trained for some of my stunts with Tiger's trainer Zile Mawai Sir.

"It's all very warm between us. We are nowhere close to being rivals. Although we are very different individuals we get along very well. Both of us are basically loners."

Interestingly, Sooraj, actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab's son, makes his debut with a remake of Jackie's big career-making film "Hero".

Says Sooraj, "I don't think that matters between us. If Tiger had made his debut with his dad's film he would have been endlessly compared with his dad."

Tiger said:, "Yes, I am friends with Sooraj. In fact, I know both Sooraj and Athiya Shetty (actor Suniel Shetty's daugther) very well. I am sure they will do a fab job in 'Hero' (remake)."

"Hero" is being produced by Salman Khan and directed by Nikhil Advani.

"I am very excited as I am walking with Mr. Bachchan. My wish to share a platform with him has come true now. Though it is not a film, but I am happy that I am sharing a platform with him," the 29-year-old told reporters Tuesday at the Mijwan Fashion Show.

A supposedly funny line in David Dhawan's "Main Tera Hero" where Raju Kher takes a dig at Katrina Kaif's lack of command over the Hindi language had the affable director being confronted with lots of righteous protest.

The director says the actress will take the "bantering quip" sportingly.

"It is just an off-the-cuff remark, a bantering quip in the film, and Katrina is a girl I've known for many years. In fact, she did her first big film 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?' with Salman Khan and me. She can never be offended with what I do. She knows it's all in fun," said Dhawan.

For the first time Dhawan has directed his son Varun in "Main Tera Hero", which also stars Nargis Fakhri and Ileana D'Cruz. The film is coming out April 4.

He was recently quoted as saying that his son Varun won't get married until Salman does.

Laughed the filmmaker, "I was just doing some 'masti' with my son. I don't see any likelihood of Salman getting married. So. I was kidding about Varun staying a bachelor."
