Salman plans expansion for Being Human

Superstar Salman Khan is set to expand his charitable organisation "Being Human" by opening up more stores in the country as well as go international with stores in Sri Lanka.

"A lot of people are buying 'Being Human' clothing and we are doing pretty well. This year we plan to open about 40 more stores and we would be in about 1,850 selling points. Plus we have tied up with Sri Lanka," the 48-year-old said here Sunday at a VEER campaign by Thums Up.

"We are doing pretty okay and now we want to start cafes, gyms and all that kind of stuff. All the money we make will go straight back into the charitable trust after paying taxes," he added.

Salman added that they are taking things slow as they want new ventures to be permanent.

"We are trying to start as many permanent things, that's the reason we are slow. It shouldn't be that we start something in a hurry and then it shuts down. We got the clothing line and it's doing really well. Then we will start a few more things," Salman said.

"The important thing is that whoever we want to partner with, we want them to make money. Then it's their call whether they want to give it to charity or keep it for themselves," he added.

"Being Human" is Salman's charitable organisation which works for the underprivileged. Its first store opened last year in Mumbai.

Will film on 1983 World Cup feature Kapil, Gavaskar?

A movie on India's victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup may be incomplete without at least one of the members who made the win a reality -- but filmmaker Sanjay Puran Singh says it's too early to comment on whether Kapil Dev or Sunil Gavaskar will be part of it.

"I am thrilled to direct this film on the 1983 Cricket World Cup. I wonder why nobody has still touched this space before. We are still working on the script and it will go on floors by the end of this year," Singh of "Lahore" fame, told IANS.

"The two prominent faces in this film will be inspired by Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar. As far as Kapil and Sunil coming on board is concerned, it's too early to talk about it. This is not the right time to talk about it," he added.

However, a source close to the film said: "Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar are on board. They are likely to do a guest appearance in the film."

The film is tentatively titled "1983", and it will go on floors by this year-end.

When asked who will be seen playing the then captain Kapil Dev in the film, Singh said: "I don't write the script keeping characters in mind, but my concern is that the actor who will come on board should resemble Kapil Dev."

India won the 1983 Cricket World Cup against the West Indies.

Made on a budget of Rs.6 crore, the film did decent business.

Actors Divya Dutta and Rajit Kapur, who starred in the screen adaptation of Khushwant Singh's "Train To Pakistan", have fond memories of the late journalist and writer, who died in the capital last week.

He passed away quietly at his residence March 20. He was 99.

Divya, who played a key role in "Train To Pakistan", met the writer a few months ago only.

"I've the fondest memories of him! We shared a bond ever since 'Train To Pakistan'. I visited him at his home in Delhi a few months back. We had a heart-to-heart chat. He was full of life. He gifted me a book with a lovely message. It would be my cherished gift for life," said the talented actress.

Divya is now in the process of writing a book culling together the anecdotes she has gathered from Khushwant Singh.

"We discussed life in general.I am writing down his anecdotes. I could never get enough of them," she added.

Rajit said: "If there was one Indian who really spoke his mind and who really had a way with words it was Khushwant Singh. He was a man of letters all the way."

"Train To Pakistan", released in 1998, was directed by Pamela Rooks.

Why would Sonakshi campaign for party, asks Shatrughan

$

BJP candidate and sitting MP from Bihar's Patna Sahib Shatrughan Sinha says neither does his political campaign require star power, and nor does his actress daughter Sonakshi, who is apolitical, need to campaign for any party.

The veteran actor, often referred to as 'Bihari Babu', recently filed his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha polls. But some people waved black flags against him.

Excerpts from an interview where Shatrughan reacted to the protest, and his political plans:

Q. You were greeted by protestors in your constituency on Patna. How come?

A. These so-called protestors looked to me like hired junior artistes from a Bollywood political drama. They looked suspiciously sponsored by some vested interests. And they seem to have a one-point agenda: To get some space in the media by latching on to my name. Having said that, I must admit that black flag protestors are a sure sign of political clout.

Wasn't Arvind Kejriwal greeted with black flags by protestors? I think if black flag protests don't happen, then the politician is not happening (laughs). On a more serious note, if these so-called protestors have a problem with my candidature, they should talk directly to the party high command. The (BJP) parliamentary board has cleared my candidature. Should I listen to my party or to these handful of protestors?

Q. If I am not mistaken, there were protests against your candidature during the last elections as well?

A. Yes, some people from the All India Naukar-Dai Sangh had protested. I was later told that protest too was sponsored. These protestors are too late in their attempts to oppose me. I've already been declared a candidate by the parliamentary board and none other than (BJP president) Rajnath Singh has proposed my name for the Patna seat. Let the majority decide whether I am worthy of being re-elected.

The poll predictions are that I'd win by an even larger majority than the last time by the support and blessings of the people. I forgive the protestors because all said and done, they are misguided elements from my own extended family.

Q. There were also some questions raised within your party about your daughter Sonakshi Sinha not campaigning for the party?

A. She isn't here campaigning for her own father, then why would she campaign for others? She is busy with her career. And she is apolitical. Let her be. Let me reiterate I don't need any star power in my campaign.

Q. Apparently there was a lot of dispute within the BJP about your candidature?

A. Though Patna was my first and final choice as a constituency, I was told to fight elections from the Delhi constituency because they felt I could influence the voting pattern of all the seats in Delhi. But I said no. Only Patna for me. Once a Bihari Babu, always a Biharu Babu.

Q. Strangely, Bhojpuri actor Kunal Singh has been pitched as the Congress candidate against you in the Patna constituency?

A. Kunal says I'm like his elder brother. He has tremendous respect and regard for me, and I've tremendous affection for him. He must have been coaxed into standing against me by his party high command. During the last elections, they had pitched poor Shekhar Suman against me.

Q. There is talk of dissent between you and your party - the BJP?

A. One thing is for sure. The party has become like an action-oriented drama. The action hero has taken over.

Q. Are you talking about Narendra Modi?

A. My tongue is firmly in my cheek. The leadership seems preoccupied with many things at the moment. Who is the leader is for you to decide. The party is fully charged, poised for the leap. As far as my own dissatisfaction goes, I'd rather look at the glass as half-filled than half-empty.

Q. How is your relations with Narendra Modi?

A. Very good! He is a tried-and-tested leader. He has done so well in Gujarat. We share a great professional rapport, though we may not be that close on a personal level. It's become fashionable to declare oneself a close friend of Narendra Modiji or Rahul Gandhi. But sorry, I am neither Modiji's right or left hand. I am who I am without attaching myself to anyone.

But that doesn't mean I'd question his place in the party when it (Modi's place in the BJP) has been verified by the parliamentary board and no less than Rajnath Singh.

Q. Are you supporting Narendra Modiji's candidature for prime ministership?

A. This isn't the right time to answer this. However, I must say that L.K. Advani is a friend, philosopher, guide and guru to me. He is a godfather to the entire party. I am sure the action hero, Narendra Modi has Advani's blessings.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan says that earlier the Hindi film industry had stability, but now every weekend, one gets to see new talent.

Now, it’s so many and so varied and so talented that sentiments keep changing with each weekend,” the 71-year-old posted on his official blog srbachchan.tumblr.com Monday.

“Why just the other week we were talking of Deepika (Padukone) and on came another weekend and Parineeti (Chopra) swung by. Alia (Bhatt) jolted us soon after, as did Vidya (Balan) not so long ago and before it Rani (Mukerji), and before, Kajol and so on,” he added.

The “Don” star further posted that “everyone has their own positions secure as that irresistible Fevicol tube, which just refuses to depart from your skin, once in but each Friday bursts through with a wonder and a lasting applause.”

Facing widespread condemnation for likening Lok Sabha poll frenzy surrounding him to "being raped", Bengali movie star and Trinamool Congress candidate Dev Monday apologised for his comments.

"I m new in politics. My heart is clean. No offence meant 2 any1. I respect Maa, sis al women n brothers. Dint mean 2 hurt any1. SINCERE SORRY," tweeted Dev who is contesting on a Trinamool Congress ticket from Ghatal in West Midnapore district of West Bengal.

Talking to Bengali tabloid Ebela, the actor-turned-politician said: "Eighty percent of the media is now focusing on Ghatal. Dev contesting from Ghatal has become a hot topic. It is nice that a place like Ghatal has also become popular."

Asked if he was enjoying the moment, Dev was quoted as saying: "Enjoy ... it's just like being raped, either you can enjoy or can shout."

Political parties have condemned the "outrageous" comments and are even mulling lodging a complaint with the Election Commission.

If Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Sujon Chakraborty and state Bharatiya Janata Party president Rahul Sinha called for the cancellation of his candidature, Congress' O.P. Mishra demanded penal action, demanding the administration take immediate action.

State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury too slammed Dev for his comments and accused Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee of fielding celebrities as candidates to defraud people.

"His (Dev) comments are indicative of his insensitivity and is highly condemnable... the move to nominate celebrities shows the immaturity and insensitivity of the Trinamool chief," Chowdhury said reacting to the incident.

Filmmaker and actor Nagesh Kukunoor's latest film "Lakshmi", about human trafficking and child prostitution has garnered critics' appreciation. He says he strives to give the audience a choice in films as repetition can bore the audience.

Kukunoor is known for films as different as "Rockford", "Iqbal", "Dor" and "Mod".

"I have always been of the view that the audience should be given choices. If we make the same kind of films, the audience doesn't grow and they don't get to experience different things," he said here Monday at the NRI of the Year award function.

"I have always tried to tell those stories on which I have a perspective, and I go ahead and do that," he added.

The filmmaker had to work hard to get "Lakshmi" to theatres. He now wants to relax.

"Reaching the audience is a tough thing, especially small films, like it took 'Lakshmi' a year. I am very tired and now that it has released, I will take a few weeks' break and then think about my next film," Kukunoor said.

Meanwhile, the lead actress of "Lakshmi", singer Monali Thakur is very happy with the response to her first film as an actor.

"It feels amazing and out of the world. It is my first film and it is getting appreciated all over the world and not just our country is something that we are very proud of," she said.

"Lakshmi" was awarded the best film audience award for Best Narrative at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January.

Veteran Bollywood actress, Nanda, known for hits like "Gumnaam" and "Jab Jab Phool Khile", died Tuesday morning following a massive heart attack at her residence here, her relative said.

She was 72 and is survived by two brothers.

“She breathed her last around 8.30 a.m. It happened so suddenly we could not even call a doctor,” her sister-in-law Jaishree T. told IANS of Nanda’s end at her house in Seven Bungalows in the northwest suburb of Andheri.

Nanda was the daughter of renowned Marathi actor and director Vinayak D. Karnataki and niece of the legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram.

After her big break in V.Shantaram's "Toofan Aur Diya", she graduated to supporting roles with hits like "Bhabhi" and Dev Anand-Waheeda Rehman starrer "Kala Bazar", followed by lead roles in "Gumnaam" with Manoj Kumar, with whom she teamed up again in "Mera Kasaoor Kya Hai". Rajkumar Hirani to direct Sanjay Dutt biopic?

$

0

The story of Sanjay Dutt's life is likely to go on the screen and, if all goes well, director Rajkumar Hirani and actor Ranbir Kapoor would come together for the first time to tell the highs and lows in the 54-year-old star's life.

The decision was reportedly taken around a week before Sanjay returned to Pune's Yerawada Jail after his parole period ran out.

"Maanyata bhabhi (Sanjay's wife) was keen on a film being made on her husband's life for Sanjay Dutt Productions. But the couple wanted only Rajkumar Hirani to direct the film as Sanju sir has created magic with Raju (Hirani) in 'Munnabhai M.B.B.S." and 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai'," said a source.

Hirani, it seems, was busy with "Peekay" and not willing to commit to any other project until he was done with it. Also, the material and the facts regarding Sanjay's life were too vast and controversial. But both Maanyata and Sanjay were adamant.

"Finally, he (Hirani) has said yes to a film on the life of Sanjay Dutt. He will start researching and putting the project together after he completes the post-production of 'Peekay'," the source said.

"Both Maanyata bhabhi and Sanju sir wanted Ranbir to play Sanjay Dutt in Hirani's film. Ranbir is a diehard Sanjay Dutt fan. And he has readily agreed to play the role," the source said.

A convict in the March 1993 Mumbai blasts, Sanjay is currently serving the remainder of his five-year imprisonment at Yerawada since May 2013.
