'Ragini MMS 2': Just Porn Horror

$
0
0

Film: "Ragini MMS 2"; Cast: Sunny Leone, Divya Dutta, Pravin Dabbas; Directed by Bhushan Patel; Rating:**

At least the first "Ragini" film gave us a sparkling performance by Rajkummar Rao, then called Yadav. This was the time when Rajkummar's Shahid was not even conceived. He was a "despo", much like the character of "Ragini MMS 2".

What did I come away with from "Ragini MMS 2"? A sinking feeling that the horror genre has run its course. Boredom is a beast that director Bhushan Patel is not up to fighting. Sex is brought in to liven up the semi-dead spirits. Steamy scenes are stuffed into this scare-fest since Sunny Leone top-lines the cast.

The script has been tailored to accommodate the lewd...sorry, lead's porn backdrop. So when the film crew visits the same haunted house where the first "Ragini" film unfolded (why make the same mistake twice?!), Sunny, all voluptuous and popping all over the place, fakes an orgasm and tells an obnoxious fellow actor that porn actresses too can act.

They sure can. Sunny, in her third Bollywood film, puts in quite an effort to look possessed by an evil 'chudail'. To be fair to this fornicating fraulein on an image-mending binge, the last half-hour finds her going into convulsions of terror. It's a climactic performance that pines to tell us that porn stars can act.

Point made. Sunny is always good with climaxes. We can now move to the rest of the film which slithers through the hall of absurdity with a terrifying nonchalance. We have characters deliberately moving deeper and deeper into the darkest shadows of the haunting house inviting sure death. If you are so dumb as to go into empty rooms with creaky doors, then you might as well be dead.

Why are the characters in our horror films so intellectually challenged? "Ragini MMS 2" is specially suffused with morons. There is a hammy television actor who takes a naked shower with Sunny (once a porn star) and then later jerks off in bed. He is so gross because guys in the "Ragini" series are destined to be just that.

In "Ragini MMS 1", Rajkummar Rao dragged his girlfriend to a haunted house to shoot a dirty MMS with her. In this instalment, there is an over-the-top film director (the talented Praveen Dabas) who wants to make a 'horrex' (a blend of horror and sex, much the same as the director of "Ragini MMS 2") .

He barges into Sunny's bedroom and barks: "Say you want me to f...k you"

Really! Is this the way directors talk to their leading ladies while making 'horrex' films? No wonder the Ramsays were savagely pulled up in Ashim Ahluwalia's "Miss Lovely".

"Ragini MMS 2" is so enamoured by its luscious leading lady's lusty past that it doesn't know what it wants to be. Neither horrifying nor sexy, the film is like a conflicted schizophrenic seeking a closure to his identity crisis blocking out the sunlight from all the windows in his home and running around in circles all over his darkened home.

Watching "Ragini MMS 2" is like playing Russian Roulette with the lights off. You know someone is pulling the trigger and trying to fire random shots at unidentified victims. Every trick from the horror genre is brought into use. By the time Divya Dutta is brought in as the latest avatar of Max von Sydow from "The Exorcist", the devil is too far gone to be tamed.

And I don't mean the chudail in this film.

Telugu actor Harshvardhan Rane, who is making his Bollywood debut with John Abraham's upcoming production "Satra Ko Shaadi Hain", says he is excited and pleasantly surprised to be launched in this way.

"I'm excited as well as pleasantly surprised to have got this opportunity to be launched in Bollywood by John, who is known for introducing new talent. He did that in 'Vicky Donor' and has continued with his latest project," Harshvardhan told IANS.

"They have had me in the scanner for a long time but things materialized only now. I believe in John and the work he produces as a producer. It's a Bollywood debut I couldn't have ever asked in my life. I'm extremely happy," he added.

"Satra Ko Shaadi Hain", which has gone on floors, also features television actor Barun Sobti. It is being directed by Arshad Sayed.

Harshvardhan feels the love of his fans landed him this project.

"I know I got this opportunity because of each and every person who asked me when will I go to Bollywood. Somehow their wish went into the universe and this became possible," he said.

"I'm a believer of the concept secret. Sometimes I think it's what others wish for you more than what you wish for yourself," he added.

The actor was earlier supposed to make his Bollywood debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Ram-Leela", but he let go of it.

"I was asked to dedicate 10 months for a small role in the film. I finished three Telugu films during that time period. Bhansaliji once told me that I should choose the right films and I applied it to his offer only," he said.

He is currently awaiting the release of Telugu psychological thriller "Maaya".

Actor Aadi Pudipeddi, who is awaiting the release of romantic-comedy "Pyaar Mein Padipoyane", says he agreed to work with director Ravi Chavali because he gave his father Sai Kumar a much needed makeover in 2006 Telugu film "Samanyudu".

"I believe in Ravi and agreed to work with him because I'm still in awe of the makeover he gave my dad in his film 'Samanyudu'. He had the faith in my father and portrayed him in a negative character in that film. This was one of the main reasons that I agreed to work with him," Aadi told IANS.

Sai Kumar won Nandi award as well as a Filmfare award for his role in the film.

Aadi says he's trying his hand comedy in the film.

"All my films so far had comedy in a few scenes. The scope for comedy in this film is higher. I have tried full-length comedy for the first time. I was little nervous about doing comedy, but Ravi made me believe that I could pull it off," he said.

The film, which also features Shanvi Srivastav in the lead, is slated to release around end of April.

Bilal Amrohi, who is making his debut with "O Teri", says it's a huge responsibility to be an actor.

"I always wanted to be an actor. It's a huge responsibility to be an actor as you become a public figure. That's why I took a little long to come here (in the film industry) and prepared myself before I joined the industry," Bilal, the grandson of legendary filmmaker Kamaal Amrohi, said here.

The actor says he is very close to superstar Salman Khan's family, and if there's one thing that he has learned from Salman, it is the virtue of honesty.

"Salman told me to be myself and be honest. That's one of the most important thing I have learnt form him. Salman and his family fulfilled my dream to be an actor. I am very close to his family. His charisma and aura is on a different level," he added.

Bilal admits he was nervous facing the camera.

"I was very nervous facing the cameras. We did lot of workshops for this film," said the actor, who features in the movie with Pulkit Samrat, Sarah-Jane Dias, Sara Loren and Mandira Bedi.

Directed by Umesh Bist and produced by Atul Agnihotri, "O Teri" also has a special song featuring Salman.

'Cuckoo' - blinded by love

$

Film: "Cuckoo"; Cast: Dinesh, Malavika Nair, Murugadoss and Somasundaram; Director: Raju Murugan; Rating: ***1/2

Ears become the eyes of Tamizh (Dinesh) and Sudhanthirakodi aka Kodi (Malavika) in "Cuckoo", which revolves around the love story of a blind couple united by love.

If the approaching footsteps of Kodi can bring a bright smile on Tamizh's face, it's the latter's impromptu singing that can make the former skip a heartbeat. When you can't see your beloved with your own eyes, but can still feel his or her love with the remaining four senses, the bond strengthens.

Debutant director Raju Murugan's "Cuckoo" is a mostly endearing and occasionally sad film exploring love and hope with intermittent humour.

"Cuckoo" instills hope in the relationship of two blind characters, so blinded by their love for each other that they are unaware of the fact that there are forces among them that wishes to see them separated for personal reasons. To what extent Kodi and Tamizh will go to protect each other from being separated?

The reason I think "Cuckoo" is one of the better love stories of modern-day cinema is because it never takes advantage of its lead characters. It never expects or forces the audience to sympathize with Kodi or Tamizh at any given point in the film.

The director doesn't completely ignore the sympathy factor and introduces us to Vinoth, who happens to be Kodi's reader at a private institute. He helps her out of sympathy but not out of personal interest to help a visually challenged person. This entire episode is merely to reiterate the fact that people like Kodi and Tamizh need our support more than relentless sympathy.

"Cuckoo" is narrated through the eyes of Raju Murugan, who started this project during his days as a reporter with a Tamil publication. This style of narrative helps us understand how dear this film is to Raju, who takes the pain in underling the point that love is superficial when it is coloured by what we see of each other. He puts forth his point without sounding preachy or melodramatic, but in a fashion everybody can relate with and appreciate.

Very few Indian filmmakers have successfully executed a film featuring differently abled characters in the lead. Usually such films are highly emotional and dramatic, forcing us to like it out of compassion. The last such film that I think didn't force the audience to sympathize with the characters was Gulzar's "Koshish".

Raju's "Cuckoo" respects the audience as well as its blind lead characters and takes us on a journey to explore love from the perspective of Kodi and Tamizh.

Dinesh is probably the next Kamal Haasan of the industry, while Malavika is an equally talented actress. They make you fall in love with Kodi and Tamizh neck deep. Dinesh reproduces every little detail of a visually challenged person to perfection in a highly optimistic role.

With a strong supporting cast, the film doesn't miss a single opportunity to entertain with a host of dupes of film stars such as Chandrababu, Vijay and Ajith.

The congregation of the blind, the physically challenged and the eunuchs in some scenes of the film are not merely to provide entertainment, but also to give us a peek into their lives that are equally as colourful and enjoyable as ours in their own way.

Besides love, "Cuckoo" also explores friendship. In a standout scene, Tamizh asks his best friend, who is also blind, to have a good look at Vinoth, and tell him how he looks. He looks around, takes a few seconds and tells him that Vinoth is hideous. Both laugh in jubilation and so do we, the audience.

The last half hour of the film may appear a tad melodramatic, but it's still believable. Santosh Narayanan's life-affirming music makes you ignore fewer flaws you may across in the film, which is mostly sincerely written, acted and executed.

"Cuckoo" proves that love is not blind.

I hope people change mindsets about my acting: Sunny Leone

$

Indo-Canadian adult film actress Sunny Leone, whose latest Bollywood project "Ragini MMS 2" has hit the screens, hopes that her performance in the movie will help people change their mindsets about her acting skills.

"I don't know if I would be able to shut the mouth of those who criticize my acting, speak bad about me, but I hope they watch my this film and hopefully change their mind about my acting," Sunny told reporters here Friday at Gaiety Galaxy theatre, where she was present to seek audience's response to her film.

Sunny made her Bollywood debut with erotica "Jism 2" in 2012, and then featured in "Jackpot" last year. While both the films failed to do decent business at the box office, her performance was hardly lauded.

However, she feels that with "Ragini MMS 2", she has improved as an actor.

"I believe that my acting in this film has got better. I am more comfortable now in front of the camera," Sunny said.

Talking about the difficulty she faced while shooting the climax scene for the film, Sunny said: "I can't tell you what all I had to do to shoot that (climax) scene. My whole body was exhausted.

"I didn't have a body double to do bends and all that stuff. I was bruised, cut and bleeding," she added.

Meanwhile, "Ragini MMS 2", produced by Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Productions and directed by Bhushan Patel, has got a good start at the box office and Sunny has so far received a mixed response for her performance in the film.

Alisha Chinai misses love in her life

"Kajra re" crooner Alisha Chinai, who turned 49 earlier this week with a quiet birthday at her residence in Alibag with only her dad for company, finds it tough being "companion-less". Nevertheless, she's "happy being the queen in my own castle".

"I've been on my own for many years now. And I'd be pretending if I said I didn't miss that someone special in my life. It's been very tough on me to be companion-less," Alisha said.

"Lekin love meri fitrat aur kismet mein nahin (Love is not in my nature and destiny). It's better to accept the karmic truth than to keep searching for something that destiny has not willed for you and hurt yourself repeatedly by trying to get it," she added.

Alisha was married to Rajesh Jhaveri in the 1980s. They separated after her career took off. In 2003, she was in a serious relationship with a Canadian musician-entrepreneur Romel Kazzouah. The two of them almost made it to the altar before they broke up.

Singer of several numbers of the past decade, Alisha says she's a giver in any relationship. But it all goes in vain.

"I gave everything I could to make my relationships work. But fate had other plans. I'd be lying if I said I don't miss love in my life. Of course I do. But after so many years, love has become an fantasy in my head rather than a reality on my bed.

"Reality bites. And I've to admit I am better off alone. Love sounds better in a song. I am happy being the queen in my own castle," she added.

Today with the slump in the music industry and the fight over royalty with a leading recording company, Alisha is happy crooning a song once in a while. The last time she sang for a film, it was for composer Rajesh Roshan in "Krissh 3".

But Alisha is now poised to cut her own album.

"I am still smiling and I am read for a comeback," she said.

Looking back, the "Made in India" singer is grateful for all that she has received.

"Some people crib about the thorns in the roses. I am grateful there are some roses in a bouquet of thorns! My life has not been a bed of roses. My failures have inspired me more than my success," she said.

Alisha was delighted to be inundated with birthday wishes on Twitter.

"It was exhausting but very satisfying. I didn't realize I had so many diehard fans! It feels good. Yeah, life is beautiful."

Actor Deepak Dobriyal has been cast in a role closely modelled on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal in political satire "Lollypop Since 1947".

Deepak will an 'aam aadmi' (common man) who becomes a political force to reckon with.

"I play a salesman who becomes a member of parliament. It's role that every supporter of Kejriwalji would immediately recognize," said the talented actor, who has featured in films like "Omkara", "Gulaal" and "Dabangg 2".

Deepak, who went through a ghastly eye accident last year, says the role required immense preparation especially since it's directed by a member of a political family.

"It's directed by Anirudh Chautala who is the former Haryana chief minister Devi Lal's grandson. The film has a very clear wake-up message for the masses...very close to what Arvind Kejriwalji has attempted to put forward," he said.

Next, Deepak goes into Sooraj Barjatya's "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo", where the actor says he has a substantial role.

"Salman Bhai's (Salman Khan) company is lucky for me. I had just a few scenes with him in 'Dabangg 2'. Commuters to this day stop my car at the traffic signal and call out for me with my name 'Gainda bhai' from 'Dabangg 2'."

Will direct commercial films in future: Santosh Sivan

Known for directing path-breaking films such as "Tahaan" and "Malli", cinematographer-filmmaker Santosh Sivan, says he will direct commercial films with stars when he runs out of scripts that are close to his heart.

"Because I make films close to my heart doesn't mean I don't enjoy other kind of films. When I'm not shooting films, I work as a cinematographer for 'mass' films. When I'm done with all the scripts that are very close to my heart, I'll make commercial films with stars," Sivan told IANS.

He finds them fun.

"It's great fun to enter into commercial films' narrative. I think commercial films are interesting because it's somewhere an extension of our old way of storytelling with songs and dances. Everything has that charm," he said.

However, Sivan says commercial films are time-consuming.

"I still have a few small films I want to make. Moreover, commercial films take too long to be completed and I can't afford to spend so much time on a project. So before I start making commercial films, I should ensure I have ample time," he added.

The filmmaker is currently working as cinematographer for Suriya-starrer Tamil actioner "Anjaan" and he is awaiting the release of his forthcoming directorial "Inam".

"Inam" revolves around a group of orphans during the Sri Lankan civil war.

Anurag Kashyap to present 'The World Before Her' documentary

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has come on board to present award-winning documentary "The World Before Her", joining others like Shimit Amin, Nandita Das, Deepa Mehta and Lisa Ray to raise funds for the movie's nationwide campaign ahead of its April 25 release.

"I love this film and had heard about it a long time back. I want to make sure it gets to as wide an audience as possible. That is why I decided to get behind it. It is the first documentary I have launched and it feels like a narrative film," said the acclaimed director, who supports offbeat projects.

A six-month nationwide campaign for the movie was launched March 8, International Women's Day, with the support of Nandita, Lisa and Deepa. The trio believe that the documentary is a must watch for every Indian.

"'The World Before Her' is powerful, insightful and poignant. It's very telling of our times and the complexities we need to deal with, especially in the area of gender empowerment," Nandita said in a statement.

"Chake De! India" director Shimit Amin raved about the documentary, by which he was "blowna way", saying: "I was scared and moved at the same time. This film is the only true portrait of anything that is going on here."

Apart from the theatrical release in metro cities, the makers aim to reach out to the wider audience by screening the film in educational institutes across the country and in parts of India where female infanticide and foeticide is high.

Joining the campaign are women's rights activists and former Miss India Pooja Chopra, who was a near victim of female infanticide. Pooja, who featured in the film "Commando", plays a key role in the documentary.

The makers of the film have set a goal of raising $50,000 in 40 days with the help of a crowdfunding organisation, Kickstarter and have managed to raise more than 40 percent of the amount in just over two weeks.

"The World Before Her" writer-director Nisha Pahuja says the idea of launching a crowdfunding campaign came up "because we wanted to ensure the film and its message travels far and wide and reaches people who normally would not have access to a film like this".

"Stories have the ability to change the way people think about an issue because they are non-threatening. In order for women's rights to really take hold in india, trying to get people to 'see" differently is key," she said.

The award-winning film, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival (TFF) in 2012 has been screened at more than 125 International film galas and has won 19 awards and distinctions including best documentary feature at TFF.

Pooja Bhatt was left aghast Saturday morning. A woman knocked at her door for a meeting fixed by a "casting agent", who the actress-filmmaker conjectures is "masquerading" as her on online social networking platform to exploit young Bollywood aspirants.

"A young lady and Bollywood hopeful arrived at my house at 5.30 a.m. saying a certain Rajeev Malhotra, who claims to be my casting agent, sent her. She went on to insist she also 'spoke to me' on FB (Facebook) and I confirmed the same.

"This is dangerous as obviously, someone is masquerading as me on FB," Pooja, daughter of acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, posted on her Twitter page.

Clarifying her stance on the matter, she added: "No agent or co-ordinator represents me. This man claiming to be 'Rajeev Malhotra - 9667882304' is attempting to use my name and mislead young women."

"More than 50 percent of the co-ordinators out there have no access to people who actually launch stars. They lie to young aspirants and exploit them. It concerns me that innocents, with stars in their eyes will be taken advantage of by sharks who scour the shallow waters of fame for a kill," added the filmmaker, who has directed movies like "Paap" and "Jism".

Can't just dump my kids and go off to work: Kajol

$

For actress Kajol, who is set to feature in her husband and filmmaker-actor Ajay Devgn's home production, her priority is her children and she can't "dump them and go off to work".

Kajol and Ajay, who got married in 1999, are the parents of two children - daughter Nysa and son Yug. After the birth of her daughter in 2003, she has done very few films such as "Fanaa", "U Me Aur Hum", "My Name Is Khan", "We Are Family" and "Toonpur Ka Superrhero".

In an exclusive interview, Kajol told IANS: "My only reason why I am not doing films is my children. My children need my attention and it's my duty to give them my time. I have not given birth to them to just dump them and go off to work. I am not that kind of a person."

"I have my kids and I want to see them growing up and turn out the way I always wanted them to be. Even kids expect that kind of time from you, and my husband is always working. He does four films in a year, so at least I have to be with them."

A strict mother, Kajol felt that certain guidelines should be laid down to discipline children.

"Of late I have not been shooting; so I have been busy spending time with my kids. I am a very strict mother and as a mother it's my responsibility to guide my kids and tell them to go how far and no further. There should be rules and guidelines for the kids and they should know their limits," she said.

Aware of the fact that she has a fan following that wants to see her on the screen, the actress said she likes to have her space.

"I know my fans are waiting to see me on the screen, but I like my space and I like to do one film in a year or so and not more than that. I was always choosy but now I have become more chooser and picker when it comes to scripts," said the actress who has been active in front to the camera since 1992 and has about 40 films to her credit.

The celebrity couple came together on the screen in "Gundaraj", "Ishq", and "Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha", "Raju Chacha" and "U Me Aur Hum", which was their last film together.

When asked about teaming up again with Ajay, Kajol said: "Frankly speaking, Ajay and my tastes don't match when it comes to films. We are poles apart when it comes to films. We don't agree with the same kind of films; so it is very difficult that we agree on same films and it only happens once in eight or nine years."

Meanwhile, the actress is also associated with "Help A Child Reach 5", which aims to eradicate preventable deaths like diarrhea by teaching lifesaving hand washing habits.

She said: "I am spreading this awareness and taking it nationally. I am pushing this campaign to other countries this year. We hope to bring the change."

In an ensemble cast, loss is borne by all: Meera Chopra

Southern actress Meera Chopra, who teamed up with a host of actors in her Bollywood debut "Gang Of Ghosts", says there is an advantage of working in a multi-starrer - the onus is on everyone if the movie doesn't work.

Released Friday, the comedy revolves around ghosts. It has been directed by Satish Kaushik who pulled off an impressive cast that includes Sharman Joshi, Parambrata Chatterjee, Mahie Gill, Anupam Kher, Saurabh Shukla, Rajpal Yadav and Jackie Shroff. It has got a lukewarm respone at the box office.

Meera said: "Before this film ('Gang of Ghosts'), I had signed Vikram Bhatt's film, which is a supernatural love story. So first, I signed that, but first this film released. So I feel it's an advantage for me...even if it's a flop, the entire burden will not be on me as the film has an ensemble cast."

"If a film has an ensemble cast, the loss is borne by all the actors and I am glad I am debuting with the film. My next film is a solo project," she added.

Meera started her acting career in southern film industry and her first few releases include her hit debut Tamil film "Anbe Aaruyire" and Telugu movie "Bangaram".

When asked why did she start her career with southern cinema, she said offer knocked on her door.

"I was working in NDTV, did modelling projects and got opportunities down South. So, I did South film and my debut film became a huge hit and I started getting good offers after that. Had I got opportunities from Bollywood I would have definitely done that. The dream was to work in Bollywood."

Actress Nargis Fakhiri, who is still struggling to speak Hindi fluently, has dubbed in her own voice in her forthcoming film "Main Tera Hero" and says the language is not blocking offers.

"There is no less offers because of my language problem. If I get a script, I understand it when I read it," said the actress and added that script reading sessions with co-stars help too.

"You get time to sit with your co-actors and prepare, but to improvise in Hindi is tough. (Initially) I had to stick to my lines, but now I can understand and that's a great progress," said the actress who entered the Hindi film industry with "Rockstar", a musical hit.

In her her first film her voice was dubbed by someone else due to her poor Hindi diction, but Nargis proudly says that "it's my own voice in 'Main Tera Hero'."

"It was hard, but it was fun. I am proud of myself because it's difficult. It's not easy to learn a new language," she added.

Directed by David Dhawan, the fun film will see his actor son Varun romancing two beauties - Nargis and Ileana D'Cruz - when it hits screens April 4.

When asked did Ileana's presence make her insecure, Nargis said: "Why would anyone be insecure with someone else if you know who you are? There is no need to fight or being insecure. I am blessed my co-actress is a lovely lady. We got along well. The experience was lovely and no cat fights.
