Superstar Pawan Kalyan has decided to supervise the script of his upcoming Telugu actioner "Gabbar Singh 2". The film's director Sampath Nandi has no qualms about his interference.

"This is a very special project for Pawan sir. He will supervising the script with me and I don't have any issues with it. After all, at the end of the day a film is not a one-man show. It's a team work and I'm happy that we are working together," Sampath told IANS.

Pawan, who has been a successful actor for nearly two decades, donned the hat of a script supervisor a decade ago with his film "Gudumba Shankar".

Sampath clarifies that the film will not be an extension of Telugu blockbuster "Gabbar Singh", which was a remake of Bollywood blockbuster "Dabbang".

"Although it's a sequel, 'Gabbar Singh 2' is not an extension of 'Gabbar Singh'. The regular shooting will commence from May onwards and we plan to release the film for Dussehra. We are still in the process of zeroing in on the rest of the cast," he added.

Pawan will co-produce the film with his close friend Sharath Marar, while Devi Sri Prasad will compose the music.

Former Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad, who is making his cinematic debut in upcoming Kannada-Telugu bilingual "Sachin...Tendulkar Kadu", will be essaying an important role of a coach, says its director S. Mohan.

"Prasad's role is very important in the film. We haven't roped him in to capitalize on his popularity, but because of the story. The story revolves around an autistic boy who aspires to become Sachin Tendulkar. Venkatesh plays his coach in the film," Mohan told IANS.

"Since the story revolves around cricket, I thought having real cricketers would make it even more authentic," he added.

Child actor Snehith will play the role of the autistic boy, while actress Sushasini Maniratnam will be seen in the role of his mother.

"We have already started shooting with Prasad. His camraderie with the boy will be one of the highlights of the film," said Mohan.

'Aaha Kalyanam' - faithful remake sans creativity

0
0

Film: "Aaha Kalyanam"; Cast: Nani, Vaani Kapoor, Badava Gopi and Simran; Director: A. Gokul Krishna; Rating: **1/2

"Aaha Kalyanam", the southern remake of Hindi entertainer "Band Baaja Baaraat", is a faithful attempt by debutant director A. Gokul Krishna. But the biggest problem with it is that it's a frame-to-frame copy of the original and that too sans creativity.

For all those who have watched the original, the film will turn out to be unsatisfying, while for the rest it's a decent one-time watch with humour that crackles at regular intervals. Despite solid performances by the lead cast, "Aaha Kalyanam" misses the soul of the original and that was to be embraced the most.

Sakthi (Nani) and Shruti (Vaani) are two fresh college graduates, who partner up to start a wedding planning venture. It turns out to be successful in a very short span of time. Having championed the art of the business with small-budget weddings, they move to the next level, where they have to lock horns with Chandrlekha (Simran), a prolific wedding planner in the industry. With honesty and dedication, they beat her hands down.

When Sakthi and Shruti began working together, they swore not to mix finance with romance and that there will be no room for love in their relationship. But that rule gets overridden when an incident which brings them intimately close. Subsequently, Shruti falls in love with Sakthi, who is worried that he has broken her trust, and, therefore, tries to avoid her. When Shruti comes to learn that Sakthi is avoiding her for reasons she fails to understand, she kicks him out of the company, triggering off rivalry between them.

The problem with most Indian remakes is that they try to live up to the standards of the original, when ideally they should be concerned about the reaction of the audience. In its attempt to recreate the original for Tamil audience, "Aaha Kalyanam" merely reproduces scenes from the former with a different cast. Even with a new cast, some scenes of the film give you the feeling of watching the Tamil dubbed version of "Band Baaja Baaraat".

The only likable aspect of "Aaha Kalyanam" is the wedding sequences, which reek of colour and southern flavour, breathing life into the film.

Although the music is passable, one song in particular stands out for bringing out more than 20 wedding cultures to perfection. These are some of the best moments of the film you even remember long after walking out of the theatre. But again, most of the wedding is portrayed through songs and you seldom get to experience the joy of wedding through the characters.

Nani is impressive as Sakthi and there couldn't have been a better actor to play his role. He also takes the effort to dub in his own voice in Tamil, and he earns some brownie points for the same. Vaani makes an excellent southern film debut, but she seems to be too good for the role and also lacked the southern connect. Ideally, the makers should've opted for a familiar face such as Tamannaah Bhatia or Shruti Haasan, who are popular with the Tamil audience.

The fact that the makers dubbed the film in Tamil instead of shooting it simultaneously, is such a turn off. On the contrary, dialogues by Rajiv Rajaram manage to evoke laughter even in the most serious scenes. That's a bonus that the film rightfully deserves.

Overall, "Aaha Kalyanam" is like going to a colourful wedding and being served tasteless food.

Actress Madhuri Dixit is impressed by the content of Marathi films. But she isn't sure if she will ever follow in the footsteps of some Hindi movie stars and produce a film in the regional language.

"I have not seen recent Marathi films, but yes I have seen 'Natrang' (2010) and 'Jogwa' (2009) and I was impressed with the kind of films they are making," Madhuri, who comes from a Marathi-speaking family, told IANS.

"The Marathi film industry has evolved over the years. As far as producing Marathi films are concerned, I have not thought about it," she added.

The dancing diva has also not yet been approached to produce a Marathi film.

Hindi stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh and Akshay Kumar have produced films for the regional film industry.

Embarassment has no space in actor's life: Rahul Bagga

0
0

Actor Rahul Bagga, who has been cast as Mastram in a movie on the Hindi pornographic literature's resident-guru, says there's no space for embarrassment for an actor like him. He had apprehensions about the movie turning out as a C-grade entertainer, but not about feeling embarrassed.

The film, directed by Akhilesh Jaiswal, focusses on the country's well-known porn writer Mastram.

Rahul describes the film as a "fictional biography of a real guy, whose pen name was Mastram. He wrote porn".

"The film speaks about how our society corners and forces a non-conformist to go against his dreams," he added.

Having read "enough of Mastram's porn" during his theatre days in Delhi, Rahul didn't have to go out of his way to prepare for the role.

"I had read Mastram for many years, so the words and subject were close to my life... basically relatable. So, preparation for my character was going on for the past 10 years," he said.

Was there any embarrassment in accepting the role?

"There was a thought about how the script would turn out. When my director Akhilesh Jaiswal told me the idea that he wants to make a film on Mastram, I was excited. Then it sunk into me that the film was about a porn writer.

"What kind of scenes would there be? How were they going to shoot the porn angle? Would the end product come across as a C-grade film as it had no big name attached to it?

"These were the concerns which came up after the initial excitement, but embarrassment doesn't have space in an actor's life. An actor like me cannot afford the luxury of embarrassment.

"I'm glad that the people whom I am answerable to are only my parents and a couple of close ones. The rest of the society and people stopped existing for me the day I started doing theatre," added the actor, who was seen in "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana".

The Mastram movie required Rahul to perform a lovemaking scene, but he clarifies that "it's a film about a porn writer and it is dealt with in an intelligent way".

"There is no vulgarity or sleaze or skin show or cleavage or bikini. Considering the fact that this film is inspired by a real-life person who revolutionised and brought out hidden emotions of a man and woman in Hindi porn literature, if there are sex scenes, they are an integral part of this story and not by the demand of any producer or for some commercial reasons," he said.

Wherefore film associations: Pooja Bhatt

0
0

Filmmaker Pooja Bhatt, who is caught in a title tussle with Vipul Shah over his "Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty", says she is in a situation where "it's like paying hafta (protection money) and still being beaten up" by film associations.

Earlier this month, the actress-turned-filmmaker had shared how she was not happy with the title of the Akshay Kumar-starrer as she too had released a film titled "Holiday" in 2006.

Now, Pooja may initiate legal action against Shah and his co-producers UTV for the alleged infringement of copyright.

Pooja claims the title belongs to her, but Shah protests that he not only revised the original title, but he also got it approved by the Indian Motion Pictures' Producers Association (IMPPA).

Explaining the matter, Pooja said: "Vipul Shah wrote to me asking for the title
'Holiday'. I said no. He approached the (Film and Television Producers Guild Of India. The Guild rejected his application. He then went to IMPPA and registered the same title with a tagline attached."

"I want to know, why should I bother to become a member of any of the film associations, pay them for the privilege, register and re-register my titles for a fee and still get copyright-challenged by any producer who wants to take my title? It's like paying hafta and still being beaten up," said the miffed filmmaker.

She wants the film associations to get their act together and their procedures in place.

"A producer like Vipul Shah exploits a loophole in a rotten, outdated system where the film associations violate one another's rules and interests and then pass on the buck," she said.

Meanwhile, she says her title "Holiday" remains registered till 2016.

"Yet if someone else can use it what is the point of film associations," she questioned.

Giving his side of the story, Shah said: "Pooja thinks I've used the title when I don't have it. This isn't true. I had requested her to give me title 'Holiday'. She did not and I had to go for the title 'Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty'.

"I've gone through the legal process and got it registered. Only then have I used it. Pooja should be taking on IMPPA who gave me the title."

Lizzy and I are together: Priyadarshan

Reacting to rumours of a rift in his marriage, acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan has said that he is "very much together" with his wife Lizzy. He says arguments are a part of every couple's life, but "no one has the right to put our marriage on display".

The prolific filmmaker, who made Bollywood film "Rangrezz" last year, suddenly surfaced in the news this week with reports of a rift with his wife, former actress Lizzy.

Breaking his silence on the matter, he says he has sorted out the problems with his wife.

"I was shooting in the interiors of Kerala completely oblivious to the growing whispers about my marriage. Let me assure everyone, Lizzy and I are very much together," he said.

Not that the National award winning filmmaker of "Kanchivaram" fame is denying differences with his better-half. He says they are normal domestic issues.

"Come on, which couple doesn't argue and fight? Sure, Lizzy and I had some difference of opinion. It all started over a recent Celebrity Cricket League (CCL) match. But the argument was between us.

"Like any marriage, there are things that happen between a couple that should remain private. No one has the right to put our marriage on display without our knowledge," said the co-owner of CCL team Kerala Strikers.

He says he is in the dark as to who leaked out the information on his marital discord to the press.

"Somebody definitely played dirty with us. And I suspect it is someone who is close to us," he said while sharing his suspicion that "one of our so-called friends has spread this lie about my marriage".

Next year, Priyadarshan and his wife will complete the silver jubilee of their marriage.

"We've been married for 24 years. Next year we plan to have a grand silver jubilee celebration," he said.

Shocked by the divorce rumours, he says that "maybe in the entertainment business some people come together and separate as and when they wish", but "our marriage is built on a solid foundation".

"Lizzy gave up her acting career to be my wife and to look after my home. She has given me a wonderful son. I can't express enough gratitude for her presence in my life.

"It's shocking to even mention 'divorce' in our marriage."

Film industry is more organised: Madhuri Dixit

0
0

In the three decades that Madhuri Dixit has dedicated to entertaining Hindi film buffs, the hugely talented and enduringly beautiful actress saw herself evolve as a performer and as a person. She feels that the new crop of artistes in filmdom comes prepared to handle the increasing "pressures" in a more organised industry.

"The industry is more organized now, but of course, there is too much pressure and people are less forgiving. The new generation is completely prepared and they are well-groomed today...that was not there before," Madhuri told IANS in an interview here.

"We started and learned (the art) as we worked. But today, the new actors are confident. It is wonderful. Of course, there is a lot of pressure to deliver good performance," she added.

During her prime, Madhuri was compared to many of her contemporaries, but she "can't say if the competition has become bitter now".

"It's a creative world. Everybody is doing what they do best and they are trying to make their space. It's not that just one person is going to dominate the industry because in that case, we would not have had names like Madhubala, Meena Kumari ji, Nargis Dutt ji...all of them were shining at the same time," the 46-year-old thespian and dancer said.

After having started an acting career with the 1984 film "Abodh", Madhuri went on to cement her space in Hindi movies with entertainers like "Tezaab", "Ram Lakhan", "Tridev", "Parinda", "Dil", "Sailaab", "Khalnayak", "Hum Aapke Hain Koun" and "Dil To Pagal Hai".

If acting came naturally to her, it was her fluid dancing skills, elegance, enigmatic smile and her charismatic personality which were a bonus for her. She got plum roles in with the best of banners, directors and actors. And she continues to court them.

But she remains as grounded as ever. How?

"This credit goes to my parents because of the way they have brought me up...their values. My mother has always stood by me and even through all the ups and downs, she always had encouraging words to say to me.

"Even after marriage, I found a family where my in-laws have a thinking like my parents," said the actress, who married Sriram Nene, a US-based doctor, in 1999.

She says even though she was treated like a star everywhere she went, "I always had a reality check at home waiting for me".

"I am an actress and I have so many fans who adore me. But when I go home, I am a mother, daughter, wife...and I forget everything else," said the mother of two boys.

After her wedding, Madhuri had shifted base to Denver, and she gave the big screen a miss to realise her dream of having a family and children.

"I had never dreamt to be an actress, but when I became one I wanted to be the best. I wanted to dance and act the best, but that was on the professional level. On the personal front, having a family, kids... it was a big part of my dream because I come from a big family," said the doting mother.

She says visiting glitzy Bollywood parties that are a norm for actors was a pain for her.

"I never liked it. It was a baggage which I had to carry with me. But this (having a happy family) was something that I always wanted. When I was in Denver and raising my kids, it was part of the dream I was living," said the actress, who will soon be seen in "Gulaab Gang", perhaps a career defining role in which she portrays the leader of a gang that fights for women's rights.

Kannada actor-cum-minister Ambareesh's health stable

Kannada star and Karnataka Housing Minister M.H. Ambareesh is recovering from a breathing problem caused due to lung infection, a senior doctor at a private hospital here said Sunday.

"Ambareesh's health condition is stable and improving, though he is still on ventilator to help him breathe easily and avoid strain," Vikram Hospital's chief pulmonologist K.S. Satish told reporters here.

The 61-year-old was admitted to the hospital late Friday after he felt feverish and uneasy and complained of difficulty in breathing.

"Ambareesh's lungs were infected due to change of weather and less immunity level at his age. Diagnosis and tests showed he was unable to breathe normally due to respiratory problem. He was put on ventilator to support breathing and stabilise his condition," Satish said.

A 10-member team of doctors, including specialists, is monitoring the veteran actor round-the-clock and treating him.

"Ambareesh, under observation in the intensive care unit (ICU), is responding to medication and is better than he was Saturday. His vital organs are functioning normally and health parameters are improving," Satish noted.

The "Antha" actor will be in the ICU for the next 24 hours and will be shifted to ward Monday if he resumes breathing normally.

"He is on sedation to ensure total rest and faster response to medication through intravenous drip. He is on liquid diet and fed through Ryles tubes," said Satish.

Following reports about Ambareesh's ill-health and anxiety over his welfare in the fraternity, his actress-wife Sumalatha asserted that her husband was fine and there is no cause to worry unduly.

"Ambareesh is better and conscious. He is expressive and responding to treatment. I appeal to his fans not to spread false information about his health," Sumalatha said on the occasion.

Seeking privacy and space for her family to take care of Ambareesh, the actress assured the hundreds of fans thronging the hospital since Saturday that their annavaru (elder brother) would return home soon and appear before them.

Ambareesh's nephew Madan, who was at the hospital, also assured the fans across the state that their icon would return home early after recovering from breathing problem.

"We thank all his fans across the state for their well wishes, appreciate their concern for his welfare and join them in prayers for Ambareesh's good health," said Madan.

About 100 fans have, however, decided to stay put in front of the hospital till they see the star appear and leave only after he talks to them.

At his home town Mandya, about 100 km from here, special prayers and pujas (rituals) were conducted for Ambareesh's speedy recovery and long life with good health.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali turns 51 sans fanfare

Acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who turned 51 Monday, says he enjoys being "on my own" on his birthday and that he is now more creatively fulfilled than he was at 40.

"Last year, my sister arranged a big surprise 50th birthday party. This year I am in a quiet space," Bhansali said.

"I just want to think and write. I never believed in birthday parties. During childhood my sister and I had no birthday parties. We would take a packet of sweets to school and distribute it to our classmates. That was it.

"We never had birthday parties. Nor were we allowed to go to parties. Now it has become a habit to be on my own on my birthday," he added.

The filmmaker, whose "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela" was appreciated last year, feels more creatively fulfilled now than he ever did.

"I feel I am at that stage of my life when all my hardwork, all the knowledge and experiences that I've gathered over the years, have come to fruition. I feel more fulfilled and complete today than I did when I was 40," he said.

He is also rejuvenated.

"I'm more adventurous now. I am more fearless as an artiste. I am working with various kinds of talent. I directed an opera in Paris in 2008. Now I want to do more of the things that I can do if I have a team around me.

"Today I am working harder than I did five years ago. I put in nearly 20 hours every day. And I am enjoying every bit of it," said the filmmaker, credited for films like "Black" and "Guzaarish".

At the moment, Bhansali is producing a massy masala movie titled "Gabbar".

"I've grown up in Bhuleshwar. I'd pass through the red light area every day looking at those theatres with those eccentric names. I've grown up with the rowdies and the Gabbars all around me. I loved those movies of the early 1970s near Alfred Talkies.

"The humour in my life even in my in own family was filmy. It's a wonderful thing to go back to these titles," he said.

Of his life so far, the bachelor said: "All the pain, suffering, love passion and conflict have made me what I am.I make passionate love stories because I don't have love in my life. My art completes my life. My life may be unfulfilled. But it isn't unhappy"
