Oscar favourite: 'The Wolf', 'Gravity' tops Bollywood directors' list

$

0

Oscar is round the corner and Indian filmmakers have their list of favourites ready and "The Wolf Of Wall Street", "Gravity" and "12 Year's A Slave" top the list.

The best picture nominations for 2014 are "American Hustle", "Captain Phillips", "Dallas Buyers Club", "Gravity", "Her", "Nebraska", "Philomena", "12 Years a Slave", "The Wolf of Wall Street" and the final result will be announced at the March 2 gala in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, the Indian filmmakers take their pick:

Sudhir Mishra: My Oscar for best film would have to go to Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf Of Wall Street". It’s Scorsese’s best film since "Good Fellas". People, who have objected to the tone of the film don’t understand it’s the world that Scorsese has depicted that’s squirmy, and not the way it is portrayed. It’s a world of corruption and depravity and the film goes at it full-on.”

Sujoy Ghosh: I want Stephen Frears’ "Philomena" to win. There’s no way it’d win. But that’s the one I love the most. She is the one who stayed with me.

Shoojit Sircar: It’s a toss-up between Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" and Scorsese’s "The Wolf Of Wall Street”.

Amole Gupte: My choice is "Gravity". It’s the 21st Century Solaris

Ajay Bahl: I loved "The Wolf Of Wall Street". I think it’s Leonardo DiCaprio’s best performance to date.

Raj Nidimoru: Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" hands-down. It’s a spectacular achievement where unprecedented craft meets beautiful human emotions. A spectacle we experience only once in a while. What is interesting is that the principal actors have not been nominated. But the film on the whole shines over the others.

Bejoy Nambiar: "Gravity" is my choice, though I loved "The Wolf Of Wall Street" a lot more. But I still think "Gravity" is a path-breaking cinematic experience. It will almost surely take the best picuture Oscar.

Prawaal Raman: "12 Years A Slave". It beautifully portrays the spirit of survival against all odds.

Santosh Sivan: “Gravity" is awesome. It touches a new cinematic level.

Ananth Mahadevan: Steve McQueen’s "12 Years A Slave". The depiction of the dilemma of a man unjustly sold as a slave captures a regrettable chapter of American history. McQueen paints a heartrending picture. I prefer the human drama to the other nominees.

Sahil Sangha: As a diehard Scorsese fan I’d want to see "The Wolf Of Wall Street" win. "Gravity" is another favourite because it is a rare exception that given the technical boundaries it has pushed, it still touches us as a human story. Jean-Marc Vallée’s "Dallas Buyers Club" and "Philomena" are also excellent.

Admitting her love for black and white hues, fashion designer Masaba Gupta Thursday said she would love to dress her father, former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards, in a bandhgala crafted by her.

"I would love to put him in a bandhgala, that I have made from one of my prints, not a regular one. I think he will look cool because he has maintained himself pretty well," Masaba told the media here at the opening of the first 'Masaba' store in eastern India.

On her illustrious father who loves the city, Masaba said he "doesn't understand fashion".

"He always tells me how well the women in Kolkata dress. He says the women here are very fierce and they dress very well," she said.

On the other hand, she said her actress-mother Neena Gupta has influenced her design sensibility and aesthetics.

"Growing up, I always saw her dress like this... in Ikkat, Kanjeevarams, handloom stuff. She always had this eclectic style and she used to pick up sarees and cut it up and do things herself.

"So she was a designer on her own and seeing her like that... my sensibility and design aesthetics have become like that," she said.

Masaba said she would love to see Neena in a combination of red, white and gold.

Excited at the opening of her first franchise store, fashion designer Masaba Gupta Thursday said endorsements by Bollywood stars were "important" to help boost a brand's image.

"It is important (for a designer to be sported by actors)... absolutely. Because it's very clear that the whole country runs on cricket and Bollywood.

"You either have a cricketer endorse your clothes or you have a Bollywood star endorse them and its instant popularity... it's instant connect because people want to dress like their favourite stars," she said.

"I think it's something we consciously like to do... it really helps our brand," she told the media here at the opening of her first 'Masaba' store in eastern India.

Masaba, daughter of West Indies cricket legend Vivian Richards and actress Neena Gupta, has carved a niche for herself at a very young age.

The 24-year-old launched her label in July 2009 and three years later, she was appointed fashion director at Satya Paul.

She said the style of her clothes caters to the cities she brings her collections to.

"Delhi is a market where people experiment much more and Mumbai people are more casual and Kolkata is most quirky and outlandish," she explained.

Curl up your locks in creative ways

Curls can make hair look voluminous and stylish. Reach out for papers and tongs to make your hair curly.

Ishika Taneja, make-up expert and executive director of ALPS cosmetic clinics and academies, shares how to curl your hair in different ways:

* Tong curls: Wash your hair and let them dry completely. Create sections and put a heat protection spray and comb out. Wrap a section over the tong and let the steam out, keep it for around 20 seconds. You can set the tong on the temperature between 180-220 degrees. Then take a second section and wrap it in opposite direction over a tong. This will give a bounce to the hair. When done, settle it with a fixing spray.

* Paper bag curls: Wash and towel dry the hair and spread mousse evenly on the strands. Cut thin long strips of paper and wrap sections of your hair in the inward direction. After folding all the sections, tie the edges of strips to keep them intact. Paper strips will soak the wetness, making hair completely dry. Open the knots to get spiral curls.

* Slicked out curls: Apply mousse on washed and dry hair. Brush them out and make thin sections. Twist your hair and put a rubber band on the tip or twist it till you get a tiny bun, secure it with the bobby pin. Blow dry or let them dry till you take a nap. Remove the pins when dried completely.

* Out-of-the-bed curls: Wash your hair. Take equal amount of serum and mousse and mix them well. Apply the mixture evenly on head and comb properly and then scrunch your hair.

Mallika’s thought process didn't match 'A Little...': Director

Indo-Canadian director Keshav Panneiry says his film "A Little Heaven In Me" focuses on the “fighting spirit of Indian women” and, therefore, he chose model Pragya Jaiswal over Mallika Sherawat to play the lead.

"The main reason we refrained from casting Mallika was that her thought process didn't match the subject of our film, since she had given the statement that 'India is a regressive and depressive nation for women',” Panneiry said in a statement.

"Our film shows the positive side and fighting spirit of Indian women, and her screen and public image didn't go with the character of the film," he said.

Produced by Purnima Mead under her Bibia Films banner, "A Little Heaven In Me" is about a woman, who makes an exceptional journey from being a small town girl in Rajasthan to becoming one of the best known writers in the world.

The makers zeroed on Pragya because they found her "promising" and her onscreen presence "charismatic".

Panneiry said that once they decided to avoid familiar Bollywood face, "we decided to have a fresh and talented face."

"We conducted auditions. They were held in a real shoot like environment where we found Pragya very promising and her on screen presence was charismatic," he said.

The movie will be going on floors by first week of May.

'Highway' is Alia's 'Arth': Mahesh Bhatt

Not one to be blinded by parental affection, he is yet to give an acting break to his son Rahul, but filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt is clean-bowled by his youngest daughter Alia Bhatt's performance in Imtiaz Ali's "Highway".

He said: "I saw Alia in 'Highway'. Alia overwhelms you with her heartbreaking sincerity. Her journey has begun. This is Alia's 'Arth'. Highway is a film that will sparkle in Alia's filmography."

Alia's mother and actress-filmmaker Soni Razdan is set to direct the youngster in a film based on the notorious Nanavati murder case that shook Mumbai's beau monde way back in 1959. Pooja Bhatt will produce it.

The original plan was to cast Alia with Randeep Hooda, but they were already doing "Highway" together, therefore, a hunt is on for another leading man to be paired with the actress.

Interestingly, while conversing with Karan Johar on the latter's talk show Bhatt had described Imtiaz's “Rockstar” as the most overrated film.

But he seems to have liked the director's “Highway” a lot more.

He said: "It is an outstanding film. Imtiaz Ali staggers you with his simplicity. It is bare, harsh and truthful."

A court here Thursday told Bollywood actor Raghubir Yadav to pay monthly alimony of Rs.40,000 to his estranged wife.

Additional Sessions Judge Anuradha Shukla Bhardwaj dismissed Yadav's plea challenging a magisterial court order asking him to pay the maintenance.

The court said it finds "no infirmity or illegality in the order of the trial court".

Yadav had informed the court that he was earning Rs.2.25 lakh annually.

His wife, however, opposed it by saying that being a person of high status and stature, it could not be believed that his income is too low.

The sessions court upheld the order, where the magistrate had assessed and presumed Yadav's income to be Rs.1.25 lakh per month.

The sessions court said the magistrate had done nothing wrong in making an assessment regarding the income of the actor on the basis of the work which he has been doing.

Yadav has worked in various movies, including "Lagaan" and "Peepli Live".

'Highway' - elegiac excursion into know-man's land (IANS Rating: ****)

$
0
0

Film: "Highway"; Cast: Randeep Hooda, Alia Bhatt; Director: Imtiaz Ali; Rating:****

Being in the world this enchanting film inhabits is like being in the state of a waking dream. The world is fatally flawed. But it's also beautiful in spite of the deep flaws, or maybe because of them?

Imtiaz Ali's new intriguing work takes us into the heartland of India, much in the same way that "Jab We Met" and to a lesser extent "Rockstar" did. Imtiaz loves his India. With all its gigantic contradictions, anomalies and aberrations.

And Veera, the arresting protagonist of "Highway", is an anomaly herself. A misfit, akin to the one that Parineeti Chopra played so aptly in "Hasee Toh Phasee" recently. Alia's performance nails Veera with a persuasiveness that belies her two-film old history.

Veera is a girl ridden with complexities and contradictions. Wealthy and spoilt, in a superbly staged highway drama, she is kidnapped on the eve of her wedding by a hood, played by Hooda with his habitual clenched intensity.

The rest of the narrative is pretty much in character with what we expect in a film that constructs its wistful fable out of the harsh reality of the ailment known as the Stockholm Syndrome. Going by the book of "How To Fall In Love With Your Kidnapper", Veera promptly falls for her scowling kidnapper whose associates (played effectively) conveniently fall off the plot's radar to leave the lovers alone.

Whether Veera genuinely feels a love or whether that love is born out of defiant rejection of the life of luxury and affluence, we will never know. As played majestically by Alia, Veera appears to be a bundle of snarled contradictions, some compelling, others purely annoying.

At times we feel she is doing what she is doing and behaving in that gratingly headstrong manner only to get even with the life that she wants to leave behind.

"Highway" is riddled with ironies, not necessarily intentional. Veera falls in love with Mahabir's angst-laden past, but is aware she has no future ahead with him. So the tragic ending, when it comes, is no surprise. A responsible director can't be accused of glorifying a life of crime. Hence in the end, the entire premise of the love story, constructed with painstaking intensity, falls apart all of a sudden, leaving us with a sense of emptied-out expectations.

But the journey, while it lasts, is exhilarating and even inspiring. No Bollywood filmmaker shoots the Indian heartland with the aesthetic affection of Imtiaz Ali. On this occasion, he has cinematographer Anil Mehta to capture the sand and the snow, the angst and the ecstasy in enrapturing welters. Mehta is the magician behind the film's textured feel.

Many passages in this voyage through North India are sheer poetry.

No other actress could have played Veera with such infectious passion as Alia, who breathes fire and life into every moment of her screen time. Luckily, she is there almost across the entire length and breadth of the narrative imbuing the canvas with tender glory and slender strength.

A lot of the film's blemishes - for example, the predictability of the plot and the rather strained attempts to introduce an element of grim social realism, are covered up by the sheer spontaneity of the main performance.

Matching Alia's fearless portrayal is the director who steals up into her darkest secrets and then allows the character to smell the air's freedom in a world where the stench of decadence is a given. You can't escape corruption and violation except when thrown together with someone who is as violated as you are. This is what Veera's tale of road romance seems to say.

In some vital ways, "Highway" resembles Gyan Correa's Gujarati masterpiece "The Good Road". One sequence where the kidnap victim helps her kidnappers to escape detection by the police at a check-point on the highway is almost inter-changeable in the two films.

In Correa's film you could empathize with the child protagonist's growing attachment to the truckers. In "Highway", it's really hard to be one with the wayward Veera's heart.

Randeep Hooda is in fine, if somewhat typecast, shape. Though his accent is distracted from his performance, the character's pain made itself apparent through its mawkish mother-fixated past-history.

It's tough if not impossible to make a politically correct film about a rich girl falling in love with her kidnapper. To a very large extent, "Highway" manages to travel a credible road, letting the sleeping dogs lie by simply believing in Veera's truth (for whatever it may be worth).

Admirably, Imtiaz Ali is not afraid of silences. The sound design by Resul Pookutty is rich in the sounds of nature. The bubble of the brook, the chirp of a bird, the groan of a tired soul and breaking of a heart....are all tangible. A special mention must be made of the texture of incidental noises on the soundtrack and the quality of the folk songs that play in the background as Veera and her kidnapper traverse a spectrum of cultures in search of...what??? We really don't know!

At the end, we are left with a deeply dissatisfying film whose very incompleteness lends a sense of beauty to the narrative. "Highway" is a sprawling stretch of splendour, created by a director who shoots every frame in a painter's vein. Layered, luminous and evocative, this is a world that M.F. Hussain would have created if he were a filmmaker.

Is this really a film? Or is it a poem that spills out metres of magnificence in a road journey where you measure life's worth not in years, but in kilometers.

Ayushmann Khurrana, who is part of Shoojit Sircar's ambitious football-based period drama "1911", says he isn't a fan of the game, but he will learn the ropes of the game from his brother.

The movie, based on the popular football clubs - Mohun Bagan and East Bengal - will be made mid-2014, and Ayushmann hopes to nail the act right.

"My brother has this amazingly dramatic name Aparshakti. He is the real footballer of the family. He is as passionate about the game as Shoojit is. I am not really into football," the "Vicky Donor" actor said here.

"I've played football as a child. But I wouldn't say I can play the game well enough to look convincing while playing it on screen," he added.

Ayushmann has requested his brother, who is a popular radio jockey, to coach him in football for the movie, which will also feature actor-producer John Abraham.

"I have requested my brother to spare some time to help me look like a footballer on screen. The problem is, he is busier than I am. Besides being a passionate footballer, Aparshakti is also a radio jockey and a theatre actor," he said.

Aparshakti is also making his acting debut in a film titled "Saat Uchakke", produced by Neeraj Pandey, said Ayushmann. "I've to bend my time table to shoot his schedules. But it's finally worth it."

"Both John Abraham and Shoojit Sircar play football like professionals. I've to look convincing with them on screen."

Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zafar, who is gearing up for the release of his next Bollywood venture "Total Siyapaa", has said that he is writing the script for a film. He hopes it shows his native country in a new light to the world.

"I am writing a script now and I wish it represents Pakistan at an international platform and people get to see that side of Pakistan which usually is not shown to them," Ali said here in an interview.

He wonders why Pakistan is "always shown in bad light".

"Pakistani people are good...it has its own kind of colour, culture, art, it has its history...people are so bubbly. Moreover, there is so much of scenic beauty there, then why such things about Pakistan are not shown in the international media?," he added.
