Independent artist Shankar Tucker, who collaborated with Shankar Mahadevan for the first time on stage at the third edition of Storm Music Festival, says he was honoured to share the stage with the Bollywood playback singer-composer.

Storm, India's one-of-its-kind camp-out music festival, which brought forth over 60 artistes to perform under one roof this year, kicked off Friday and the two performed Sunday.

"It's my honour share the stage with Shankar Mahadevan. I have been his fan since his first album and I think it's truly a dream come true to perform with him on stage," Tucker said during the performance.

Initially, Tucker and his band performed some of their new compositions along with independent singer Vidya Iyer, while Mahadevan joined on stage later.

Mahadevan said Tucker is truly a path-breaking artist.

"I have worked with very few path-breaking artists and Shankar Tucker happens to be one of them. While rest of the world was thinking of creating a revolution with digital medium, Tucker spearheaded that movement and turned out to be a sensation on digital platform," he said.

Tucker, clarinetist and music composer, launched his debut album "The ShrutiBox" featuring cover version several popular Indian songs on YouTube in 2011. That album went on to get over 10 million hits in a very short period of time.

Tucker and Mahadevan mesmerized thousands of audience with a memorable jugalbandi performance. The latter crooned several of his own hits such as "Maa" (Taare Zameen Par) and few more songs.

The highlight of their performance was Mahadevan's fast, faster and fastest version of the song "Breathless", which catapulted him into the big league in Indian music industry many years ago.

Sunday also witnessed the performances of bands such as Anthony Daasan and Yen Party and Indiva as well as independent artists Suheela Raman and Raghu Dixit Project., while spinners such as Pearl, Tuhin Mehta and international DJ artists such as Danny Rampling and Kid Creme also performed.

Over 3000 people from different parts of Bangalore as well as the rest of the country gathered to celebrate the spirit of music.

During the closing ceremony of the fest, DJ and independent artist Nikhil Chinapa announced that the next edition of Storm will take place in December in Coorg later this year.

After IIFA, US city hopes for more tourists from India

0
0

A 30 percent rise in tourists from India is what Tampa Bay, the host of the 15th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards in April, expects this year, an official said.

Tampa Bay is the first city in the US to host the Weekend, which has earlier traversed to destinations such as Sun City, Macau, Singapore, Toronto, Amsterdam, Colombo and Johannesburg.

Come April, Bollywood glamour and glitterati will light up the picturesque city, which is waiting to welcome fans and tourists from across the globe.

"We’re expecting now to be recognised in India and across other parts of the world as the ‘City that hosted the IIFA’ among the many great cities over the last 14 years,” Santiago Corrada, President and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay, told IANS in an interview here.

The city expects to attract over 30,000 visitors during the IIFA Weekend April 23-26, but Corrado is confident of “a spike in tourism” in the year after the extravaganza.

“We would be happy with an increase of 30 percent in our tourism from India. It has been that high and higher in other cities in the world. I believe it was around 35 percent in Singapore.

“I want fans of Indian cinema to say: ‘IIFA was in Tampa, now I want to go to Tampa. I want to experience what my idols experienced, I want to go to the beaches, the venues, dine where they dined’.

“We also want more people to visit us from other parts of the world as a result of the IIFA,” he said.

From the restaurants to hotels and the venues to the people - the buzz for IIFA seems to be warming up here.

The event celebrates the magic of Hindi cinema with dance, music, seminars, film premieres, parties and master classes.

Some of the top stars travel to the chosen international destination every year and they not just get to walk down the red carpet and perform, but also mingle with their fans.

What’s interesting is that Bollywood is as new to Tampa Bay as Tampa Bay will be for Bollywood. Yet, people are putting together all forces, literally, to facilitate a well-organised and memorable show.

There are no cinema halls that play Hindi films here, but Corrado says Tampa Bay’s “large Indian community has done a good job of bridging the cultural difference”.

Which is also why the main IIFA awards night April 26, when leading Bollywood stars will take to stage at the spacious Raymond James Stadium, is likely to be a sell-out. The tickets for the culminating night, mind you, start anything between $75 and $3,000 per person.

The city’s wonderful venues - the scenic Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, University of South Florida’s state-of-the-art Sun Dome, the one-of-a-kind MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre and the Raymond James Stadium, have been reserved for each large scale event of the four-day weekend.

That IIFA is a “powerful brand” was something Corrado knew, he told IANS during a chat amid the bright red seats at the breezy Raymond James Stadium.

“We knew that it would expose us not just to India, but to the rest of the world. For us, that was key,” he said.

The event’s organiser, Wizcraft International Entertainment, is also getting the support of the government here.

“We’ve had great government support as far as providing in-kind aid is concerned. In terms of money, they have helped to offset some costs. We have all forces behind to make it the best IIFA ever,” Corrado said.

Infuse red creatively this Valentine's Day

As we inch closer to Valentine’s Day, a large number of women sport red outfits as it is the colour of love. Try ruby jewellery with little black dress or red high heels with monochrome apparel to stand out, says an expert.

Jasmin Kerawalla, owner and creative director of COCO boutique doles out tips on how to avoid blending with the crowd on Valentine’s Day:

* Red jewellery: Opt for some sparkly ruby jewellery - drop earrings, a cocktail ring or cuff - with your little black dress. These red gems will spruce up your look.

* Red stilettos: If you want to follow the season’s monochrome trend, pair some red stilettos with your black and white ensemble.

* Red pants: Wear a pair of red pants that fit you well. Pair them with a neutral tube top, leaving your shoulders bare. Add a chunky neck piece and ballet flats to that look.

* Red maxi dress: Bold ones can slip into a red maxi dress. Neutral stilettos with minimal to no accessories at all, will complete the look.

* Red accessories: A red clutch or belt is also a good option.

Rhea Kapoor scouts for locations for next in Tampa Bay

0

It is still a few months before Tampa Bay hosts the 15th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards, but the city seems to have already opened its doors to Indian filmmakers. Rhea Kapoor is scouting for locations here for her next production venture.

Rhea was here last week with her father, actor-producer Anil Kapoor and their team to look for locations suitable for their upcoming project "Saat Hindustanis", a youth-based drama.

IANS caught up with Anil at the Hilton hotel here when he discussed his banner's plans to shoot in the city, which has welcomed him and his team with open arms.

"We are planning to shoot a film over here. It's our next production and it is called 'Saat Hindustanis'," said the suave actor, who calls himself a "Friend of IIFA" and who has been promoting the Weekend whole-heartedly for quite a while.

He was here earlier in January for a three-city US tour to spread awareness about IIFA and Hindi cinema.

"When I came here, I felt this city has a soul. There is an innocence and warmth in the people, who have a combination of professionalism, hospitality and warmth.

"I came here earlier in January, but I got back here again because, thanks to IIFA, I got that kind of encouragement and support for my making a film here. Such events open more doors for filmmakers to shoot at new locations," said the 57-year-old, whose banner, Anil Kapoor Film Company, has churned out movies like "Gandhi, My Father", "No Problem" and "Aisha".

Anil, who has had a taste of American showbiz with a role in the eighth season of TV show "24" and a part in the movie "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol", truly believes in the power of cinema in driving tourism for a place.

"Look at what 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' did for Spain and how everybody suddenly knew about the Burj Khalifa with 'Mission: Impossible'. I think cities and countries are gradually getting more aware of the impact that cinema can have on tourism, and it can do wonders," he said.

Back home, he is gearing up for two back-to-back sequels - "Welcome Back" and "No Entry Mein Entry". He also hopes to begin work on the second season of his popular show "24", the Indian version of the American television series.

Anil is also upbeat about returning to Tampa Bay again in April for the main IIFA Weekend and Awards, which is scheduled for April 23-26.

No felicitation can match Sachin's achievements, says B-Town

0
0

Sachin Tendulkar, who will be conferred the Bharat Ratna by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan Feb 4 has Bollywood celebrities like Dia Mirza, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh rooting for him. But they feel that no honour will ever match what the master blaster has achieved in his 24-year-long career.

The 40-year-old cricketer retired from international cricket Nov 16 last year.

Here is what B-town has to say:

Dia Mirza: There are some people, who, no matter how many awards they are given, give you the impression that they deserve more. Of course it is fantastic that he is being conferred the Bharat Ratna. But we have always known that Sachin Tendulkar is Bharat's (India) Ratna. Every cricket fan, every Sachin fan is going to be ecstatic and thrilled for him.

Deepika Padukone: He deserves it. He deserves every sort of appreciation that anybody can get. But I think more than anything he is a brand, he is a legend. No matter how many times you felicitate him or the biggest honour that you give him, I don't think anything will sort of live up to what he has achieved for himself.

Ranveer Singh: I feel some other award must be invented for him, he is such a legend.

Juhi Chawla: He has made millions of his fans proud. For years, he has been playing consistently. He is an icon and an inspiration for all. He deserves it. I am very happy for him.

Javed Akhtar: He deserves it.

Sonakshi Sinha: He (Sachin Tendulkar) deserves it. I am really glad.

Parineeti, who has always sported a plump, girl-next-door image in her films, looks fitter in her latest film. Siddharth is also said to have impressed many with his performance in the film, including filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.

Actor Shekhar Suman's directorial debut "Heartless" is another interesting option for the weekend. The medical thriller features Shekhar's son Adhyayan Suman along with Deepti Naval and Om Puri in lead roles. Shekhar has gone all out to make the film a success. He spent Rs.1 crore for the movie's title track that has been sung by Sonu Nigam.

Waiting to watch Priyanka's 'Gunday': Parineeti

0

Actress Parineeti Chopra is eagerly waiting to watch her elder sister Priyanka Chopra's forthcoming movie "Gunday" that will hit theatres Feb 14.

The 25-year-old, whose rom-com "Hasee Toh Phasee" will hit theatres Friday, says there is no competition with Priyanka.

While, this time their films have a gap of a week, in 2013, Parineeti's "Shuddh Desi Romance" and Priyanka's "Zanjeer" released on the same date, Sep 6.

"No, there is no competition with her (Priyanka). Infact I am just waiting to watch 'Gunday'. I just wish I get to see the movie at a screening before it releases on Feb 14," Parineeti told reporters during the promotion of her film here.

The actress will be seen essaying a mad scientist in the movie and she says portraying the character was "physically very exhausting" for her.

"The character that I am playing is very quirky. It is different from the ones I have played before. Usually in movies, either an actress plays a normal girl or a mentally challenged, but my character in the movie is between the two. It was physically very exhausting for me to play it," she said.

"The character is a bit off (mentally), she makes faces, she doesn't blink her eyes, she keeps her tongue out, so getting all that in a shot was very difficult. It was quite challenging for me," Parineeti added.

"Hasee Toh Phasee", which is directed by Vanil Mathew, also features Sidharth Malhotra in the lead role.

'Drama queen' a positive word for me: Parineeti

Actress Parineeti Chopra is seen grooving to the beats of "Drama queen" in her new movie "Hasee Toh Phasee" and she says that she takes the word very positively.

"The word 'drama queen' is very positive for me, because I am like that. I am very outspoken, I talk loudly, I am always happy and smiling...I do a lot of dramas and I don't think it's a bad thing," Parineeti told reporters during a promotional conference of the film here.

The 25-year-old says coming to the sets of the movie, which also features Sidharth Malhotra, was not new to her because she has always done medium budget films.

"For me, to play the character was a challenge, but coming to the sets of 'Hasee Toh Phasee' was not new because I have always done medium budget films. You know, I have always done movies with restricted budget, so shooting was fine with me but the character came to me as a challenge," she said.

Parineeti, who made her Bollywood debut with "Ladies vs Ricky Bahl", says she had a lot of personal pressure while shooting for the movie.

"I wanted to do something different and I got this movie. The role is not like 'Ishaqzaade' or 'Shuddh Desi Romance' because in those two I played very Indian characters. This was completely different, I am off (mentally) in the movie and because of that I really had to do a lot of work" she said.

"I used to try and make the dialogues easy by continuously repeating it so that it's there on my tongue and I get very depressed if I feel that I have not given my best in a shot, so that way I had a lot of personal pressure," Parineeti added.

"Hasee Toh Phasee", directed by Vinil Mathew, releases Friday.

I have improved as an actor: Sidharth Malhotra

Actor Sidharth Malhotra, who made his Bollywood debut with "Student of the Year" and is geared up for his second release "Hasee Toh Phasee", says that he has improved as an actor.

The 29-year-old says after the success of his first movie, he felt a lot of pressure doing "Hasee Toh Phasee".

"There is definitely pressure from the business point of view. After 'Student of the Year' I have become more responsible, more aware about what is happening around. I guess I have improved as an actor, both in terms of quality and quantity, in terms of performance," Sidharth told reporters during a promotional conference here.

Sidharth says his latest movie is completely different from a typical Karan Johar movie.

"'Hasee Toh Phasee' is completely different from a typical Karan Johar film. We had a restricted budget, there was nothing like luxurious cars or anything. We used to pack up early, there were restrictions. I realised how spoilt I was in 'Student of the Year', but it was quite exciting," Sidharth told reporters during a promotional conference here.

Talking about his character in the movie Sidharth said: "He is lost, not successful and sentimental. He is not a typical hero kind of character. He is under pressure and is the most stressed out character of the movie."

Directed by Vinil Mathew, "Hasee Toh Phasee" also features Parineeti Chopra in the lead role.

Different concept led to poor performance of 'One By Two': experts

0
0

Bollywood actor Abhay Deol’s debut production “One By Two” failed to excite the Indian audience due to the unusual content, less buzz and lack of exciting promos, say trade analysts.

Directed by Devika Bhagat, the film was made on a budget of about Rs.15 crore and hit 1,000-1,200 screens all over India.

"The film has not done well. The opening weekend has made between Rs.1.25 crore and Rs.1.5 crore. The concept was very different and didn't get accepted. The hero and heroine meet only at the end of the film, which is something that the traditional audience will not accept," trade analyst Komal Nahta told IANS.

Starring Abhay and Preeti Desai, the movie has been co-produced by Viacom 18.

"There was less buzz, promos were not exciting and music was not well promoted. It's done pretty bad," said Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines.

Puneet Sahay of Spice Cinemas also said that the occupancy was not good.

"On the opening day (Friday), the occupancy was only 15 percent. Saturday was slightly better. It increased to 21 percent. But it dropped on Sunday to 15 percent. The content was not catchy," said Sahay.

Have been gifted some life altering films: Tillotama Shome

0
0

She might not have joined the list of stars garnering gold at the box office or those whose glitzy appearances drive the audiences crazy, but actress Tillotama Shome feels privileged to be a part of some wonderful films in not only India but abroad too.

Starting with her role as a maid in Mira Nair's "Monsoon Wedding", she has a part in many Hindi and Bengali as well as international films.

The actress said that she was not yet "satisfied" but was not "restless" for success as well.

"I am never satisfied but I am not restless either because I have been gifted some life altering films...I want to endlessly surprise myself and not get lazy," Tillotama told IANS in an email interaction.

The actress will be next seen in film "Children Of War", which is based on the formation of Bangladesh. With what can be safely referred to as a hard hitting plot, the film promises to provide food for thought.

Tillotama portrays the sturdy role of a rape victim who is fighting the independence struggle.

It was the script that made the actress want to be a part of the film.

"The script is what made me say yes to being a part of this film," she said.

The movie is not independent of controversies and reports suggest that it might be banned in Pakistan. However, this is of no importance to the actress, who was prepared for such consequences.

"Controversy is a very blunt tool and often has no real teeth. So we shall cross the bridge when we are there," she said.

She has not only managed to create a niche with Indian films like Qaushiq Mukherjee's "Tasher Desh" and Dibakar Banerjee's "Shanghai" but has proved her mettle in international films like "Shadows of Time" and "The Waiting City".

The actress never planned these projects, which never came to her when she was studying in New York.

"Life is beautifully strange. These international films came to me not in the four years that I lived in New York but after I moved back to Bombay (Mumbai). I want to act; that is the only plan I have for now. How do you even begin to plan life?" asked the actress, who will soon be working on two more international projects - "Sold" by Jeffrey Brown and "A New Life" by Andreas Kleinert.

She however refuses to put international directors on a "pedestal".

"Every director has a different style. There is no international style of direction. So, there is no need to romanticize and put international directors on a pedestal," she said.

"The directors in our country that I have worked with have an incredibly sophisticated way of working which is uniquely their own," Tillotama noted.

Growing up with "a stammer", the actress wanted to do the "impossible". Challenging herself to go beyond what seemed realistic to her, Tillotama chose to act in films, be it commercial or non- commercial.

"The commercial vs non-commercial is a very limiting dichotomy. I grew up with a stammer and I made a conscious choice to do the one thing that felt impossible for someone like me: To Act! I challenged that self perception and wanted to see how far I could take that challenge," she said.

The script is principal for the actress while choosing to take on a role.

"I do read the script. If I like it, then I re-read the script and ensure that it was not a figment of my imagination. I meet the director and that's where the dance starts," she said.

With her father serving in the Indian Air Force, the actress often changed locations as a child and adhering to a new life every few years was something which taught her acting.

"My father was in the air force and every few years, we went to a different part of India and I learnt a new language and forgot the one before. Acting was a continuation of that kind of traveling I guess...from one life to another," she said.

Ranveer, Arjun are true friends: Priyanka

Actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, who act as friends in their forthcoming film "Gunday", are also good friends off screen, says co-star Priyanka Chopra.

The movie, set to release Feb 14, is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar.

"It's amazing to see their friendship. I have done a lot of two-hero films and you can make out whether it's true friendship or just show off," the 31-year-old, accompanied by Ranveer and Arjun, said here Monday on reality show "Dance India Dance."

"But these two are actually good friends which is nice to see, especially in a two-hero film, made the film for Ali also very easy," she added.

However, Priyanka says the two are poles apart in real life.

"They are poles apart, very different people. They are completely opposite to their characters in the film. Ranveer is instinctive, Arjun is calm and steady and thinks before doing something. But they both know how to have a lot of fun," she said.
