What flag hoisting means to B-Town celebrities

$

As India prepares to celebrates its 65th Republic Day on Sunday, Bollywood veterans like Ramesh Sippy and Subhash Ghai recall what hoisting the national flag means to them:

Ramesh Sippy (Filmmaker): When the flag is hoisted, we feel that we are Indians. That flag reminds us that because of it, an Aam Aadmi Party is born, which brings new things and the old parties also tighten their belts to do something. Time has come to fulfill the increasing demands of the public.

Sudhir Mishra (Filmmaker): Hoisting the flag means responsibility, you should know this is your Republic. Many people in the industry say that keep your brains at home while watching certain films. But I would say if you make a habit of it you would never elect the right leaders. It's cool to be political and the kids are realising this today.

Prasoon Joshi (Writer-Lyricist): The flag has an emotional value. The flag is not only a piece of cloth, it is an emotion for your country. I get goosebumps when I see the flag hoisting. There is a history to the flag...the struggle of freedom fighters.

Subhash Ghai (Filmmaker): Jan 26 is an important day for all of us, it is when we prepared our constitution, wrote our destiny. Bhasrat Bhagya Vidhata was created then. We should also think whether we are interpreting the constitution correctly or not.

Anu Malik (Music composer): Flag hoisting is a big thing, it is an emotion which cannot be described. When you hold the flag, you recall all kinds of sacrifices made by the freedom fighters, the army and all. You must have noticed that all my songs have a hint of India, right from the time I did 'Judwaa'. Then be it 'Border', 'Refugee' or anything else. I salute the greatest country ever.

'Malini 22 Palayamkottai' - woman with a vengeance

$

Film: "Malini 22 Palayamkottai"; Cast: Nithya Menen, A.C Murali, Naresh, Krish J. Sathar, Chandra D. Janagi, Kovai Sarla, Kota Srinivasa Rao and Vidyullekha Raman; Director: Sripriya; Rating: **1/2

Sripriya's "Malini 22 Palayamkottai" is what Jodie Foster's "Accused" was 20 years ago. It's an underrated gem that falters predominantly because of its very slow proceedings and the absence of commercial toppings. Critically raved and celebrated when it was made in Malayalam, the remake fails to leave an impact as the original.

Malini (Nithya), 22, a nurse awaiting her visa to Canada, falls in love with Varun, who deceives her with his charming looks. He moonlights as a pimp for affluent Prakash (Naresh) and has cheated several women in the past. Prakash is introduced as Varun's boss to Malini, and initially he portrays himself as a very friendly and respectable man. But when the moment arrives, he turns into a monster and rapes Malini twice. The duo team up and scheme a situation that eventually lands Malini in jail. Upon release from prison, Malini seeks vengeance.

As we are constantly exposed to news about rapes of innocent young girls and helpless women in the country, this film may appear to be like an extended footage of such incidents. But it's not because it achieves what many films that ever featured rape scenes didn't in Tamil cinema.

In "Malini 22 Palayamkottai", rape is not depicted from the perspective of the doer but from the victim's side. We usually hear the screams of a woman in rape, but never get to see or feel her pain. This film is an exception because it shows everything from the perspective of women, and, therefore, stands out.

If you're not patient, you're unlikely to enjoy this film or at least appreciate its effort. Sripriya addresses the subject with guts, proves that a woman at the helm can deliver an equally powerful and intelligent film. But what she doesn't realize is that her audience is not as intelligent as she would expect them to be.

Sripriya, who was once a successful actress, played a rape victim in Tamil drama "Aval Appadithan". It's probably because of that role and the effect it had left on her, she handles this subject with great care and understanding that most of her peers would lack.

The film is not your wake-up call against the atrocities happening against women in the country. It merely shows us that the ability to perform in bed doesn't make someone a 'man'. But its love, care and affection towards women that truly makes one a man. There are examples used in the film to reinstate this statement so that it gets registered in our thick skulls.

Nithya Menen plays Malini with a layer of emotions. Her transformation from the hunted to the hunter is commendable and she stands testimony to women power. She is strongly supported by debutant Krish and Telugu actor Naresh, who essay negative characters to perfection.

Dealing with a subject like rape, it's surprising to find that there's no room for sympathy in the film. All the sympathy is gathered up and presented as motivation for revenge. Despite a powerful climax sequence, the film struggles because of its meandering first half.

Actor Ashok Selvan's last release Tamil horror-thriller "Pizza 2: Villa" catered to fans of the horror genre but he says his forthcoming release "Thegidi" is for everybody.

"Another coincidence is that all the three films have the same producer. I think it's because of my producer I got to work with these young directors. I have to thank my producers," he added.

Ashok's "Soodhu Kavvum" and "Pizza 2: Villa" were produced by C.V. Kumar, who has also co-produced "Thegidi" with his brother.

Rajya Sabha nomination not ornamental: Mithun Chakraborty

Actor Mithun Chakraborty, who has been nominated by the Trinamool Congress for a Rajya Sabha seat from West Bengal, doesn't believe he has the "traits of a politician". However, he is aware that his nomination cannot be treated as "ornamental".

Here are excerpts from an interview with the 61-year-old, who is Bollywood's original 'disco dancer':

Q. Mithunda, are you formally entering politics?

A. I can't say that at all. You know me for so many years. Do I have the traits of a politician? No. This Rajya Sabha nomination is more for Didi (Mamata Bannerjee) than myself. I don't know if you know this, but ten years ago she had offered me a Rajya Sabha seat. At that time I had to say no to her because I just didn't have the time. Out of 365 days, I was working for 465 says (laughs). That didn't seem like the right time to take up such a big responsibility.

Q. So you see the Rajya Sabha nomination as a big responsibility?

A. Of course! I'm being given the job of looking after the welfare of people. A Rajya Sabha nomination should not be treated as ornamental. In any case, I don't take on any responsibility half-heartedly. I either do it with full sincerity or not at all.

Q. What made you change your mind about Mamataji's offer this time?

A. I told her to think it over, whether I'm capable of handling it or not. She told me to fill the Rajya Sabha papers while she thought it over. I did all the formalities. Then after Suchitra Sen's death, I was in Kolkata. That's when Didi told me that she had made up her mind about my capability. But do you know how I got to know I was selected for the Rajya Sabha?

Q. How?

A. I was at the Kolkata airport waiting for a flight when my daughter called to say Didi had already announced my nomination on Facebook.

Q. Mithunda, do you feel that now your life taken a swing away from acting?

A. Well, I'd like to say one thing very clearly. I am now two people. One is an actor and I'll never quit being an actor. As long as I get good roles I'll do them. If I take on bad roles my fans would be deeply offended. I've to play characters that justify my presence.

Q. And who is the other person that you've become now?

A. Yes, the second Mithun Chakraborty is the man who has been given this responsibility by Didi. Just as the characters I play have to justify my presence I've to make sure my role in the Rajya Sabha is not a letdown.

Q. Does the Rajya Sabha seat give you more scope for charitable work?

A. Yes, I want to carry my responsibility as a citizen forward by using the money that I get as a Rajya Sabha member to help the needy. I want to use the Rajya Sabha funds for the collective good. I want to make sure that the funds from the Rajya Sabha are put to optimum use. I will speak to Didi about this.

Q. Would you now cut down on your television appearances as reality-show judge?

A. No no. I remain committed to that. My fans want to see me on television.I can't let them down. Just as I've balanced many of my obligations in the past, I'll add Rajya Sabha to my many duties. Like I said, I am two Mithun Chakrabortys now.

Q. Which films are we going to see you in this year?

A. Subhash Ghai's 'Kaanchi' is coming. Then I've 'It's Entertainment' with Akshay Kumar. I'm also in Sajid Nadiadwala's 'Kick'. Then there's a big film called 'Bombay Fairytale' directed by Vibhu Puri. Then I'm doing two Bengali films. Actually it seems like a crowd of films because some projects got delayed.

Q. Mithunda, any final thoughts?

A. Pray that I continue to do good work. I've never asked anyone for any favours. I hope to remain honest to myself in anything I do in life.

Don't make mistake of writing me off: Neil Nitin Mukesh

$

Year 2013 wasn't the best for Neil Nitin Mukesh. Three of his films - "David", "3G" and "Shortcut Romeo" led to many thinking that he has exhausted his career opportunities, but the handsome actor says he's just six years old in the industry and he shouldn't be written off just like that.

"Please don't make the mistake of writing me off," said the well-spoken Neil, who turned 32 on Jan 15.

The fact that his three back-to-back films bombed at the box office in a year full of big screen gems triggered speculation on his box office status and future in cinema.

But he laughs off speculation about his exit from movies.

"Tell me, which showbiz personality doesn't face ups and downs in his career? My grandfather, the great singer Mukesh was out of work for five years until the songs of 'Kabhi Kabhi' brought him back with a bang. People want to portray me as a poor loser? So be it. Let them be happy at my expense," he said.

Neil knows he doesn't sell as a solo hero.

"Sure, I did three solo-hero films in 2013. But ensemble casts have never been a problem for me. If they were a problem, I wouldn't have done 'New York' with John Abraham or 'Players' with Abhishek Bachchan. The character, and not footage or billing is my thing. In 'Players', I took on the role of a sleazy villain. Which other leading man would do that?"

Besides, he has no regrets about being a part of his three under-performing films in 2013.

"Bejoy Nambiar's 'David' is a film I will be proud of for as long as I live. So what if it didn't work? My performance was deeply satisfying to me. Then, '3G' was a horror film. I had never attempted that genre before and I think it didn't lose any money for its producers.

"As for 'Shortcut Romeo', it was designed as a massy film with plenty of oomph and music. Bad marketing did the film in," he said in his analysis and added: "I know it's easy to look for scapegoats and do post-mortems about unsuccessful films. But I genuinely feel I didn't make a mistake with my films so far".

"Look, I am only six years old in the film industry. And I've worked back-to-back with nine national award winning directors. Now it's time for me to work with the newer directors," he said.

His forthcoming films "Ishqeria" and "Dussehra" are with new directors and he is aware he needs to "buck up".

In the wake of the gang rape of a 20-year-old woman at the behest of a kangaroo court in West Bengal's Birbhum district, acclaimed Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar Saturday expressed dismay that political parties do not have the "will or courage" to act against such violent incidents because of "vote banks".

"Political parties do not have the will or courage to condemn or speak against it (acts of violence) because of vote banks," he told reporters on the sidelines of the Kolkata Literary Meet here.

"It (violence against women) is happening all over India."

Akhtar was attending the session 'As if Women Matter' at the meet where American activist Gloria Steinem was one of the panelists. The deliberation veered towards feminism and women's movement across the world.
