'Raanjhaanaa' - celebrates pain of heartbreak(IANS Movie Review - Rating: ****1/2)

Film: "Raanjhanaa"; Cast: Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar, Mohammed Zeeshan; Director: Aanand L. Rai; Rating: ****1/2

This enormously-enriching film about the pain of love has four heroes: Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, A.R. Rahman's music and the city of Varanasi. Not necessarily in that order. But then 'orderly conduct' is hardly a given in a film about raging unrequited love.

He loves her to death. Cross his heart and hope to die. And it's their wedding day. But they're not getting married to one another. As he returns exhausted from messing up her marriage to another man, the slumbering band-baaja wallahs at his own wedding hasten awake and begin playing a wedding song wearily.

It's a brilliant defiant moment defining the contradictions and savage ironies of romantic associations.

"Raanjhanaa" tells us it's not so cool to fall in love. Unless you're ready to slither on the ground for love, if the need arises.

Ever wondered why we FALL and not rise in love? Just looking at this unforgettable dazzling and non-derivative take on unrequited love set amidst the bustling river-bank politics of Varanasi, we know all over again that love can kill your spirit, soul, self esteem and finally, your physical presence as well.

Angry, aggressive, passionate, temperamental, moody and quite simply majestic, "Raanjhanaa" is an opulent, epic, seductive, raging and rippling ode to love. The script, by Himanshu Sharma, journeys from the loverboy Kundan's childhood when he first sees his object of adoration doing her namaaz, and follows him to adulthood, much in the same way as he follows Zoya around.

In seductive spirals of song-filled rhapsody, we see Kundan pursuing his lady-love through the robust gallis and mohallahs of Varanasi. It's a beautifully charted journey, much less foul-mouthed and belligerent than Habib Faisal's "Ishaqzaade" and far more mature and relevant than Ayan Mukerji's "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani". It is also made vastly enjoyable by the director's confident and unhurried control over his lover's uncontrollable passion. It's as though Rai knows that the heart is more prone to betrayal than redemption.

The film celebrates the pain of heartbrokenness. She slaps him? That's fine. He loves her all the more for it. She turns his proposal down? That's okay. He'll do it again...and ... again. It's the protagonist's single-mindedness that navigates this enchanting love story through a series of circumstances that make Kundan look as brazen as they make destiny look cruel.

Throughout, Kundan's self-destructive odyssey into the heart's darkest regions, we are made privy into his agony and ecstacy. We know exactly how his heart beats. Maybe partly because it beats to the sound of A.R. Rahman's evocative songs. We see Zoya just the way Kundan does: tall, creamy-complexioned, warm, seductive and unattainable.

Dhanush, as the worshipping loverboy, lets his face become the map of his heart. So transparent are his feelings for the girl that every kind word or gesture from her brings a response of teary gratitude in his eyes.

This is not love as we see it in today's day and age. It's the kind of adoration that Radha had for Krishna. In many ways, "Raanjhanaa" is a gender-reversed take on the Radha-Krishna myth that takes the adoring heroine-worshipping Varanasi boy through some exceptional unacceptable circumstances.

Towards the second movement of his extraordinarily well-crafted screenplay, Rai takes Kundan's destiny to the University of Delhi campus. Bringing campus politics into a film about compulsive love may not seem like the easiest of marriages to implement. It is to Rai's credit that he doesn't lose hold of his characters' collective and individual destiny even while moving out of their home turf.

The characters dither, stray, falter and lose focus. The narrative never does. There is scarcely a single false note in this love liaison.

Hats off to Rai's actors for getting it right. Every performer, including a bit-player like Rahul Shankliya whom the forlorn hero encounters at the river ghat, seems to have come into the picture knowing not only his or her own lines, but everyone else's as well.

There is an air of unrehearsed preparedness in the way the actors pitch their characters. Dhanush's performance would go down in cinematic history as one of the most consistent and compelling portrayals of single-minded ardour.

As for Sonam Kapoor, she is a complete revelation! In a born-again performance she sparkles and shines creating a kind of sunshine-girl who is so taken up with herself that she doesn't get the chance to see what affect she has on the other until it's too late.

Swara Bhaskar as Dhanush's devoted ill-treated girl-pal and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as his loyal friend, once again prove themselves natural-born scene stealers.

"Raanjhanaa" is a very simply-told story of a love so intense, durable and destructive, that it hurts. The inner turbulence, tumult and tensions of the central alliance evolves from the vibrancy of Varanasi, from each fluent note of Rahman's music, and from every pore of director Anand L. Rai's transparent honest passionate treatment of that much-misunderstood emotion called love.

Looking back on this deeply-satisfying film, I search for flaws. And I come up with one. Would anyone every want to fall in love with a girl so selfish that she allows the man who worships her to be destroyed right in front of her eyes? Is love, then, only about giving and not expecting anything in return?

If Rai's remarkable love tale seems so richly sublime and vibrant it's partly because Sonam and Dhanush have submerged themselves into their characters until we see only their love... rather, his love.

Now we know why we fall, and never rise in love!

Telugu filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli is happy with the response that his commercially successful revenge-drama "Eega" is receiving at the ongoing 16th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF). He says a dubbed version of the film will be released in China soon.

SIFF began June 15, and will end June 23.

"It was a great feeling to see that the theatre playing 'Eega' is 75 percent full and the reactions of the audience were exactly the same as here (in India). Even Sudeep's dialogue 'animals revenge theerchukuntaaya? (do animals take revenge?)' was met with huge applause," posted Rajamouli on his Twitter page.

"Eega", starring actors Nani and Samantha Ruth Prabhu is the story of how a man rechristened as a housefly, avenges his killers. It was dubbed in Tamil and Hindi as "Naan Ee" and "Makkhi", respectively.

Rajamouli says the film has been temporarily named "Kung fu Housefly" in Chinese.

"If all goes well, we might release the dubbed version in China by year end. They temporarily named the film as 'Kung fu Housefly'," he posted.

Overwhelmed by the response he received from the Chinese audience, Rajamouli says that the emotions of the audiences are same irrespective of the language they speak.

"This trip to China reconfirmed my belief that people might be of different race, culture and language but their emotions remain the same," posted Rajamouli.

Rajamouli is simultaneously trying to find a potential buyer for his upcoming Telugu period-drama "Baahubali".

"Meanwhile, Shobu garu (Shobu Yarlagadda) was busy trying out different distributors and potential buyers for 'Baahubali'. Of course it is too early to finalise any deals," he said.

Shobu Yarlagadda is one of the producers of "Baahubali", which features Rana Daggubati, Prabhas and Anushka Shetty. It is yet to go on floors.

Dhanush an effortless actor: John Mahendran

Southern writer-director John Mahendran, who has written the dialogues in "Ambikapathy", the Tamil version of Hindi film "Raanjhanaa", says the movie's leading man Dhanush is effortless in his performance.

"He doesn't follow any particular formula to act. He allows himself to sink in to the skin of the character and perform. I have seen him perform over the years and one thing that I noticed is that he performs with ease. He's an effortless actor," Mahendran told IANS.

He says Dhanush's transformation from a Tamilian to Banarasi for the film is outstanding.

"It's tough to believe that you are watching the same Dhanush from Tamil films. For someone, who is playing a Banarasi for the first time, the transformation he has undergone to turn in an impeccable performance is exceptional," he said.

Mahendran says he fell in love with the script.

"I was lucky to have got this project at the last minute. As I read the script once before translating it, I fell in love with it. Himanshu Sharma (writer) has breathed life into it with his story that will touch the core of your heart," said Mahendran.

Known for writing Tamil films such as "Settai" and "Sachin", Mahendran says writing for "Ambikapathy" was a fun experience.

"I had to write keeping in mind Dhanush's local fans and therefore, the overall experience was fun. There was lot of scope for some funny lines and I made them as funnier as possible," he added.

While "Raanjhanaa", directed by Anand L. Rai released Friday, the Tamil version, "Ambikapathy" is scheduled to release June 28. The film is produced by Eros International, and has music by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman.

Define eyes with homemade kohl

Kohl or kajal is the basic thing required to highlight eyes, and several national and international brands are catering to those who use it. But how about giving it a personal touch and using homemade kohl?

Priti Mehta, founder and director of non-toxic lifestyle brand Omved, explains how to make that black beauty stick sitting at home.

- Take a lamp and fill it with oil or ghee.
- Keep aside a teaspoon of it.
- Make a wick with cotton, soak in ghee and place it in the lamp. Light the wick.
- Place blocks on either side of the lamp and ensure there is no breeze.
- Keep a silver plate upside down over the lamp, resting on top, between the supports.
- Place the plate about half an inch above the lamp with the flame tip touching the plate.
- Let the lamp burn overnight to collect the soot from the flame on the inside of the plate.
- Remove the plate after the flame is extinguished.
- Scrape the thick coating of carbon, black powdery residue collected on the cover into a clean container.
- Cool and add the ghee drop by drop to make the soot smooth.
- Close the jar and keep in the refrigerator for two hours. You can store at room temperature thereafter.

Homemade kajals have a good shelf life. Mehta advises to prepare it fresh at least once every four months to be on the safer side.

Since homemade kajal is very dark, Mehta suggests a way to use it. Apply it overnight and wash face in the morning or after bath. The remaining kajal leaves a beautiful and natural tint on your eyes.

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar is glad that a TV reality show like "Police Dial 100", which will showcase real life investigations carried by the police teams, is being brought out. He feels it is an attempt to bring the common people closer to the police department.

Real life policemen investigating real cases - like that of a missing two-and-half-year-old boy or illegal land acquisition, et al. Cameras have captured the proceedings of a few cases without interfering in the investigations.

Appreciating the unique concept, Neeraj Kumar said: "When the show was brought to me, I liked the concept and I knew it will be done well."

The show, made in cooperation with Delhi Police, will go on air on Life OK starting June 22.

Congratulating the Delhi Police team for doing such a great job on camera, Neeraj Kumar called them "great actors".

"After watching the show, I believe we have great actors in our team," he quipped. "These people did a great job on camera, which is very difficult to do. I am sure we will come with great episodes in future."

At a launch event held here Thursday, three audio-visuals or samples of the episodes were shown to the press.

In reference to one of them, Neeraj Kumar was asked if the police force solved the case so soon because of the cameras, he said: "Camera or no camera, if we get clues and breakthroughs, we can get the cases solved even quicker."

"The show is (just) an attempt to bring the citizens closer to the police team and their investigations," he added.

The conference saw the presence of some other police officials as well, apart from Life OK general manager Ajit Thakur and Deepak Dhar, managing director and CEO of Endemol India, which is producing the show.

The show starts with a focus on Delhi Police, and it will gradually move to other cities. The grapevine had it that some or the other actor would be roped in to host the show, but it has now been clarified that only a background narrative will support it.

"India as a country is changing in terms of the kind of shows that are shown on TV and this real reality show is a new concept brought on the small screen. The show is 100 percent real," said Thakur.

Dhar said he is proud "to pioneer something like this", and added: "I am very excited to be a part of the show. This is not a reality show, this is real television. We are going to be at the epicentre of all the investigations that are being carried out."

'Amazing Spider-Man' costume designer keen to work in India

Hollywood costume designer Kym Barrett, who had a major hand in redesigning the webslinger's costume for "The Amazing Spider-Man", says she would love to visit India, but not as a tourist. She wants to explore work options in the country.

"I would love to shoot a film in India. I don't want to travel to India as a tourist," Barrett told IANS in an email interview.

"I like to live and work in different countries where I can really experience life and the culture of the country," she added.

Her body of work includes projects as varied as romantic drama "Romeo + Juliet", sci-fi classic "The Matrix", supernatural thriller "Gothika", rom-com "Monster-in-Law" and superhero project "The Amazing Spider-Man".

How difficult is it to come up with innovative designs for iconic characters like Spiderman, who has a fan following stretching back decades?

"These characters are difficult to design as they are already so dear to the people's hearts," admits Barrett, who designed a slicker and smarter spandex-based attire for actor Andrew Garfield, the on-screen Spiderman.

"You need to re-imagine the costume and then try to create a new atmosphere around the character - a design that retains his or her original characteristics, but lives a new life in context with the new story," she added.

The 2012 film "The Amazing Spiderman", which will be aired on Sony Pix June 26, was a character Barrett enjoyed working on because she likes "projects that are adventurous and full of fascinating characters".

Barrett was just 28 when filmmaker Baz Luhrmann asked her to design costumes for the 1996 film "Romeo + Juliet". Before that, she had studied costume and set design at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.

Barrett's first tryst with costume designing was in the world of theatre. How different is it to design for the cinema and theatre?

"Theatre is very immediate and everything evolves constantly through rehearsals and into the run of the show, the costume, the character and the makeup. (It is) different in film, where once a scene is shot, you must adapt your continuity around that first scene," she explained.

"I never intended to pitch against Dhanush because I like him and his father is very well-known to me. Basically, we were already on June 21 and they were on June 28. Kolkata celebrates World Music Day in tune with history

Savouring fests that blended tradition and trend, and juxtaposed the old and the new, music lovers from the city ushered in the World Music Day Friday, days after a landmark music store decided to wind up after being unable to stand up to piracy and internet downloading.

In a testament to Kolkata's indomitable spirit, 70 city-based bands spread the sound of music across the eastern metropolis, whose music industry was jolted last week when the Music World store on fashionable Park Street decided to down shutters.

The fete, organised by Alliance Francaise, brought in the bands to perform at nine hotspots in Kolkata, including malls, popular clubs and arenas.

As a tribute to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's musical genius, a truck converted into a mobile stage playing music, started its journey from Rabindra Bharati University (Jorasanko Campus) and enlivened locales across the city.

Nineteenth century Bengali theatre actress Binodini Dasi, popularly known as Notee Binodoni, was remembered through enactments of selected songs and scenes from nine of her plays, including "Lilabati", by students of Rabindra Bharati University.

Noted percussionist Bickram Ghosh captivated audiences with his project Rhythmscape as part of 'Engage 2013', eastern India's largest digital media summit.

Actor Emraan Hashmi who drew plaudits for his role in "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai", says that the risks he took in his career have paid off.

"I always wanted to play versatile characters, it's just that I got slotted. I was only taking up films that were offered to me," Emraan said on the sidelines of a promotional event for the forthcoming film "Ghanchakkar" at the Park Hotel here Thursday.

"But when filmmakers start taking risks seeing the versatility... after seeing the turning point... the turning point in my career being 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai', people started thinking beyond the image... that I can do other films beyond the typical noir cinema of 2009... things really changed," said Emraan.

After a spate of films like "Murder" and "Gangster" that earned him the title of Bollywood's 'serial kisser', Hashmi received critical acclaim for portraying a variety of characters in movies like "Awarapan" (2007), "Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai" (2010), "The Dirty Picture" (2011) and "Shanghai" (2012).

Foraying into comedy with the forthcoming movie "Ghanchakkar", which releases June 28, Emraan was last seen in the unconventional flick "Ek Thi Daayan".

Calling it a "rebirth" in his career post-2009, the actor admitted that breaking through stereotypes in films like "The Dirty Picture" and "Ek Thi Daayan" have brought him success.

"There was almost a rebirth of kind in my career after 2009 and I got to do the work work I really wanted to do. In any decision, you have to be slightly cautious but but you have to take risks. Because in my career, risks have already paid off," he added.

“I love food. I love gol gappa. I don’t care how many people are around, I just run to eat gol gappe,” she said on the show.

With such love for food and pani puri, one wonders how the actress manages to maintain her figure.

“I believe that one must eat the right amount of food at the right time. And god has been very kind to me that he has given me a small appetite. But I eat everything,” she said.

The episode featuring Aditi will go on air Sunday.
