Actress Soha Ali Khan says that contrary to the reports she did not participate in Saifai Mahotsav cultural event at the ancestral village of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

"Just for the record, I was not performing at Saifai as stated by some news reports," the daughter of veteran actress Sharmila Tagore tweeted Thursday.

The event, which concluded Wednesday, drew flak for the enormous money spent on it.

BSP leader and former chief minister Mayawati's aide Satish Chandra Mishra said the state exchequer's money was being wasted in Saifai while people were dying from severe cold in Muzaffarnagar relief camps.

Film stars Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit were said to have performed at Saifai.

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai has finally locked a release date for his new movie "Kaanchi" - it will hit the screens April 11.

The film, which stars Ghai's latest find Mishti and actor Kartik Aryan along with veterans Mithun Chakraborty and Rishi Kapoor, is about inner power of a woman who represents millions of suppressed youth against injustice in the country, said a statement issued by the filmmaker's banner Mukta Arts.

The film is directed and produced by Ghai, and its musical score is done by Ismail Darbar and Salim-Suleiman with lyrics by Irshad Kamil.

Ghai, known for movies like "Ram Lakhan", "Saudagar", "Khalnayak", "Pardes" and "Taal", was earlier in no hurry to announce a release date for "Kaanchi" - a mistake, he said, he had made with his last film "Yuvvraaj".

The filmmaker, who has earlier discovered talents like Manisha Koirala, Jackie Shroff and Mahima Chowdhary, is extremely upbeat about "Kaanchi" and about launching Bengali girl Mishti in Bollywood.

Kiran Uttam Ghosh's latest range, an ode to simplicity

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, feels ace designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh, whose latest collection personifies her ideology with designs that are dramatic and beautifully embellished but not over the top.

"Have you ever been to a wedding and felt 'Oh my god! Isn't every one looking like everyone else?’ I often have. To me it feels like a sea of over embellished gota sequin and more gota. Call me old-fashioned or bored, but I miss the freshness and high drama of simplicity."

“As a designer, it is my job to simplify. My collection presents strong evening wear. The ensembles are dramatic, with a lot of detail, bling yet not over embellished. It’s my answer to understated trousseau chic,” Ghosh said in a statement.

The collection comprises of wedding and evening wears in fabrics that vary from georgette, chiffon to crepe and jersey.

Colours like deep rich wine red, sapphire, indigo, gold, coral, emerald and deep purple with metallic hues like silver, and copper highlight the silhouettes.

The designer feels that the collection is ideal for all those women who want to look glamorous without going over the top.

“The collection is targeted to every woman in India who has a wedding to attend or be a part of a wedding, regardless of age. Our clients range from a new born to grandmothers,” she told IANS.

When Parineeti Chopra stayed away from her favorite food

Shooting for Dharma Productions & Phantom Films’ cucking frazy Hasee Toh Phasee was no easy task for Parineeti Chopra, as the actress was given strict instructions to stay away from her favorite foods especially chocolates, cupcakes and pizza which turned out to be quite challenging given that Parineeti is a complete foodie.

If sources are to be believed, certain scenes in the film required Parineeti Chopra to sport a lean look and director Vinil Matthew, who makes his big Bollywood directorial debut with the film, took personal interest in her diet and supervised her meals.

So impressed was the director with her dedication and discipline that he gifted the actress a huge box of her favorite cupcake treats on the last day of the shoot.

Says director Vinil Mathew, “Yes I had banned Parineeti from eating junk food which is her favorite as I wanted her to maintain her look in the film. However, I felt bad about depriving her from her comfort food and rewarded her with a box of cupcakes on the last day of shooting”.

Dharma Productions & Phantom Films’ Hasee Toh Phasee starring Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra hits theaters 7th February 2014.

Popularity no indication of a good film: Shyam Benegal

0
0

Towering box office collections are not the right parameter to declare that a movie is good, says filmmaker Shyam Benegal, known for his masterpieces like "Ankur" and "Mandi".

"Popularity does not indicate that a film is good. It just shows that it is popular. It does not indicate anything else," Bengal said Thursday at a press conference to launch a month long festival dedicated to his films on Zee Classic.

A film's objective is decided by its director, he said.

"The film that one makes is based on the director's perspective. What he wants from the film is very important. If he wants popular success at the cost of everything, then he will make a certain kind of film," he said.

Known for working with seasoned actors like Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Benegal regards stars as "magnets" who can pull the audience to the theatres.

"A star is like a magnet who pulls an audience. They help subjects, which otherwise might not interest the audience," he said.

"Dyslexia, a sujbect shown in Aamir Khan's 'Taare Zameen Par', might not have many films made on it. But it worked when a well-known star acted and presented it," added the National Award winner, who teamed up with mainstream stars like Karisma Kapoor and Rekha in "Zubeidaa".

He further added that not all stars use their image to promote such subjects through their films.

One of the highest paid actors of Hindi cinema, Salman Khan says his NGO Being Human has committed to fund 200 paediatric heart surgeries in Uttar Pradesh, and on behalf of the stars who performed at the Saifai Mahotsav, Rs.25 lakh have been donated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital in Aligarh.

The "Dabangg" star, who is under fire for participating in Saifai - the home village of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav - Wednesday, says whenever he travels for performances, his aim is to aid healthcare and education in the country.

"Whenever I visit a place for a performance or a promotion, I see it as an opportunity to help the locals in the areas of healthcare or education," Salman posted on his Facebook page Thursday.

Talking about his contributions, he posted: "In Nagpur, on Sunday (Jan 4), Being Human pledged to fund 100 paediatric cardiac cases in Maharashtra state.

"And in Etawah, Being Human, on behalf of all artists who performed yesterday, has committed to fund 200 paediatric heart surgeries in UP (there is already a wait list of 81 children we have received who are being moved to Fortis Hospital, Gurgaon and their surgeries will get done by month end and Being Human is in touch with local NGOs and hospitals for their lists also)."

"We have also contributed Rs.25 lakh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital for the purchase of an echo machine, paediatric and neo-natal ventilator and a portable X-ray machine for their paediatric cardiac ICU," added the 48-year-old.

Salman, Madhuri Dixit and some other Bollywood stars reached the native village of the Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in a chartered plane Wednesday.

Their presence at the event was not taken well as Bahujan Samaj Party leader Satish Chandra Mishra said the state exchequer's money was being wasted in Saifai while where people were dying from severe cold in Muzaffarnagar relief camps.

'Hasee Toh Phasee' music expressive, impressive and perfect

Film: "Hasee Toh Phasee"; Composers: Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravijiani; Singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Benny Dayal, Shreya Ghoshal, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Nupur Pant, Chinmayi Sripaada, Sanam Puri, Shipra Goyal, Vishal Dadlani; Rating ****

A young film starring young actors Sidharth Malhotra and and Parineeti Chopra, director Vinil Matthew's "Hasee Toh Phasee" album boasts of six tracks and musical duo Vishal-Shekhar have ensured the songs capture the right essence to woo the young crowd.

"Punjabi wedding song" marks an energetic start to the album. Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Benny Dayal, the song's lyrics go like "I toh go crazy, ki jab wajde, Punjabi wedding song", and listeners will definitely "go crazy" over the beats. Replete with Punjabi flavour, it will be a must have during the upcoming wedding season.

The second number "Shake it like Shammi" starts with drum beats. A youthful and peppy song, it is sung by Benny Dayal. The song will surely make you want to "shake it" in whichever way you want to.

The third track "Drama queen" represents the the new-age girl in every sense. Sung by the versatile Shreya Ghoshal and Vishal, this one is fun, naughty and a complete entertainment package.

Next up is Shafqat Amanat Ali and Nupur Pant's "Manchala". It is a romantic song and is undoubtedly expressive, but there is nothing new to it. The song loses its effect after a while.

Another romantic offering is "Zehnaseeb", sung by Shekhar and Chinmayi Sripaada. It starts on a very slow note but quickly grows on the listener. It is expressive and imaginary - in short, how a romantic song should be.

The last track is "Ishq bulaava". Sung by Sanam Puri and Shipra Goyal, it is a very soothing and rhythmic number. A perfect song to wrap up the high-on-energy album.

All in all, the songs of "Hasse Toh Phasee" are youthful, peppy, entertaining and enthralling.

Shah Rukh plans special performance at Zee Cine awards

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan will put up a special performance with some of his co-stars at the 14th Zee Cine awards to be held here Feb 8, and he is very excited about it.

SRK was on mini world tour when he conceptualised the idea.

"This is a very special performance. I was doing a mini world tour and that time I got this idea of putting up an act with my co-actors. We haven't started anything yet and it is still just a thought. But I hope the item that we put up will be very interesting. I think everyone will like it," the 48-year-old said here Thursday at a press conference of the awards.

Shah Rukh, who has hosted the award function earlier too, would want to chip in here and there in the hosting department this time as well.

"As a matter of fact, I would even love to host sections. Zee Cine is a kind of comfort zone for me. I would like to host also but this time I would like to keep something special for the performance, work harder on it because hosting is a big job," Shah Rukh said.

Many allege that actors who perform at awards shows are majorly the ones who also walk away with awards. To this SRK said: "Those who perform are mostly those who have had a good year. Those who haven't had a good year are not normally invited to perform."

"So, if they have had a good year, they will obviously get the awards. So, there is a logic, but some people look at it cynically," he added.

Zee Cine awards will he hosted by Abhishek Bachchan who will have a few other actors joining him on stage in between.

The awards will be telecast Feb 23 simultaneously on zee TV, Zee Anmol and Zee Tamizh.

'Dedh Ishqiya' majestic ode to life, love, lust, er, Sex (IANS Review-Rating:**** 1/2)

0
0

Film: "Dedh Ishqiya"; Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Madhuri Dixit, Arshad Warsi, and Huma Qureshi; Director: Abhishek Choubey; Rating: **** 1/2

Just to hear these roguish, duplicitous characters walk the talk is a pleasure beyond the ordinary. Make no mistake. "Dedh Ishqiya" walks many extra miles beyond your highest expectations. It negotiates a nawabi era long gone, or perhaps never in existence. And it does so with a bracing bewildering beguiling blend of aristocratic arrogance and ironic humility.

Welcome to the world of quaint contradictions. This is Mehmoodabad, a place close to yet far from Lucknow where time stops still. Where mushairas and mujras jostle with very contemporary preoccupations, like making fast bucks.

The one thing that can be said with supreme certainty about "Dedh Ishqiya" is that you've never seen such a marriage of old-world charm and new-world subterfuge before.

Who in his right mind except the utterly wacked-out Babban (Arshad Warsi) would say, "Tumhari saari nawaabi, tumhare pichwade mein ghused dunga," and get away with it? Yup, nawaabi gets its twinkle-eyed comeuppance in this tale of the fading Begum (Madhuri Dixit) and her besotted suitors.

There is a delightful sequence in Madhuri's mysteriously-lit inner chamber where Naseeruddin Shah and Madhuri exchange courtly confidence while their respective sidekicks discuss the pluses and minuses of latest I-Phones.

A sequence such as this draws out the dynamics of the old and the new world, and the ideological clashes that define life in certain cultures which are defined not so much by contemporary existences as by nostalgia.

This is a world that exists only as an idea. Director Abhishek Choubey gives a tantalising tangibility to the non-existent world in this boudoir-based burlesque where autumnal characters filch resplendent Urdu poetry from their peers and pass it off as their own to gain brownie points with the beauteous patroness of the fine arts, who incidentally is not quite what she seems. But hush!

Without giving away the plot I'd like to say nothing is as it seems.

The roguish deceptions of two of the four principal characters, Khalujaan (Naseer) and Babban are known to us from the first film "Ishqiya", in which the Naseer-Arshad duo more than met their match in the spunky Vidya Balan.

The location has now changed. And so have the female protagonists. The rustic cow dung compulsions of Balan's burlesque in "Ishqiya" are now replaced by the decorous ambrosial but decadent tragic aristocracy of Madhuri's character - Begum Para.

When we first meet Begum Para, she strikes us as a beautiful anachronism. Honestly, this is a 'Para'-normal situation! Madhuri's lahja, tehzeeb, adaas, aahen gile-shikwe remind us of Meena Kumari in "Pakeezah". But the lady has a past, and a future. She is no walkover, although she pretends to be one.

Her lady-in-waiting (a very Shakespearean touch, that) is played by the exorbitantly sexy Huma Qureshi, who is growing into one of our more engaging contemporary actresses.

I really can't imagine anyone but Huma bringing the same spirit of libidinous chutzpah to the character. She is in many ways superior to the film's main attraction, Madhuri who I felt struck some wrong notes in her character's faltering firmament.

But when Madhuri dances to Birju Maharaj's choreography we tend to forget and forgive all the false notes in the characterisations.

We revel in the raga of a romance long gone-by.

The writing in "Dedh Ishqiya" and the Urdu dialogues are among the best we've heard in Hindi films of recent times. The language is a ravishing blend of the sublime and the smutty. Never experienced, never felt...

The actors are supremely in characters. Naseer with his wizened face and twinkle eyes conveys the full weight of delayed ecstasy felt by a man belatedly in love. If recently you've forgotten this actor's calibre, here's your chance to re-discover it.

The inimitable Gulzar has a load of fun writing the songs. This is a world of poetry and music where there is room for both Begum Akhtar and Yo Yo Honey Singh.

Giving Naseer tit for tat in every scene is that bundle of implosive talent Arshad. Kohl-lined eyes, and a sweeping vista of mischievous expression qualify Arshad's performance. Indeed there is more ice and fire, courtship and lust, in Warsi's scenes with Huma than there is in the temperate toned-down mock-tragic togetherness of Naseer and Madhuri.

Indeed, the film is more about same-gender bonding than about heterosexual love. I saw more chemistry between Madhuri and Huma than I did between Madhuri and Naseer.

The film is outstandingly photographed by Setu and edited by Sreekar Prasad. Both technicians here turn into artistes, who must bring into play the thumris of Begum Akhtar and the thumkas of Huma...a task easier said than done.

"Dedh Ishqiya" is at least 'dedh times' more delectable, saucy, audacious and amorous than "Ishqiya". It constructs the dynamics of love and redemption from the rubble of a lost world.

It gets its indomitable storytelling power from the writing and dialogues. The four principal actors, as well as Vijay Raaz and Manoj Pahwa, imbue broad and bright shades to their fey characters. Here's a world of poetry and parody that never co-existed anywhere else.

The world created by Choubey is at once archaic and immediate, frozen in time and yet laden with molten emotions. This is a work suffused with a sighing splendour, giggly groans and yes, a zingy 'zubaan' that yokes 'shayari' and colloquialisms.

What an enticing start to the year!

'Dedh Ishqiya' Lucknow premiere called off

0
0

The star-studded premiere of Madhuri Dixit-Naseeruddin Shah starrer "Dedh Ishqiya" in the city was all of a sudden cancelled Friday.

Officials of a multiplex, where the premiere was scheduled, said Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and members of his family were scheduled to attend the premiere at a multiplex in Gomtinagar in the evening, but the event has since been cancelled.

He declined to give any details.

Sources, however, said that the chief minister, annoyed by the adverse publicity of the Bollywood Nite at the Saifai Mahotsava where Salman Khan and Madhuri participated, decided not to attend the premiere.

Officials also said that the team of the film, along with director Abhishek Chaubey and other star cast, was informed of the cancellation of the programme when they were about to board a flight at Mumbai for Lucknow.

The red-faced crew aborted the flight and cancelled their travel plans thereafter.

The Akhilesh Yadav government gave a Rs.1 crore subsidy to the film as it was shot 75 percent in the state, entertainment department officials said.

But the negative publicity following the performance of Madhuri at Saifai forced the state government to cancel the film's premiere.

The Saifai glitz has invited sharp rebuke from the media and opposition parties as they accused the Samajwadi Party (SP) government of being insensitive to the plight of the riot survivors of Muzaffarnagar and busying itself in merry making.

"Dedh Ishqiya" released Friday and it has opened to rave reviews.
