In 3 days, 'Dhoom: 3' crosses Rs.100 crore; likely to cross Rs.250 crore-mark

0

Aamir Khan-starrer "Dhoom: 3" has grossed Rs.107.61 crore in the first three days of its release and the collection of the sleek action thriller includes earnings from the Tamil and Telugu versions. Trade pundits predict that it will amass Rs.250 crore by the end of this week.

"Dhoom: 3", which came out Dec 20 on about 4,000 screens, earned Rs.36.22 crore on the first day, followed by a slow Rs.33.36 crore on Saturday. It minted Rs.38.09 on Sunday, an official statement said.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the third instalment of Yash Raj Films' popular "Dhoom" franchise opened to mixed reviews. The movie, which also features Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and Katrina Kaif, is expected to get more footfalls in the coming week, thanks to Christmas and New Year holidays.

"The movie is still doing good business. Dec 25 is Christmas, so the demand for the tickets is more. But the movie is doing well on weekdays too. It surely has the potential to cross Rs.250 crore this week," Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines told IANS.

Spice Cinemas Delhi has already booked 4,000 tickets for Christmas.

"The movie has done really well and is expected to do good business in the coming weeks as well. For Dec 25 alone we have sold 4,000 tickets that means we have already sold 50 percent of our tickets as our capacity is of 8,000," said Punit Sahay, senior manager programming, Spice Cinemas.

Advance booking is certainly encouraging.

"For 26th we have sold 1,500 tickets in advance booking. The schedule from Friday onwards will be released tomorrow (Tuesday), so the status of advance booking can be known then. But, it's expected that the movie will earn Rs.250 crore in the first two weeks," Sahay added.

"Dhoom: 3" won't face any big competition at the box office till "Dedh Ishqiya" comes out on Jan 10, next year.

Gautam Dutta, COO, PVR Cinemas, says their pre-booking status for the week is worth Rs.3.5 crore.

"The movie is expected to do good business this week with Christmas holiday that will be followed by a weekend. We've got Rs.3.5 crore worth pre-booking," Dutta added.

Manoj Desai of Gaiety Galaxy in Mumbai said the matinee shows for the movie has gone down, but the other shows are going houseful and added: "We can only give details about the advance booking on Wednesday."

Along with the Hindi version, the dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions of "Dhoom: 3" were released in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, respectively.

Interestingly, in Chennai, more than 50 percent of the shows are sold out for the next three days at major multiplexes.

"Since its the Christmas weekend, the film is expected to do equally good business. We have approximately about 10-15 shows over the next three days, including Monday. Tickets for half of the shows have already been sold out," a representative of Satyam Cinemas in Chennai, told IANS.

"We will only open bookings for this week's releases on Wednesday. Therefore, until then 'Dhoom: 3' is expected to continue its good run. Even after that it depends on how the new releases are received by the audience," he added.

Rakki Cinemas sold about 1,200 tickets for the Tamil version of the film in the opening weekend.

"This is the highest number of tickets we have ever sold for a dubbed Hindi film. In fact, we released with equal number of shows in Hindi and Tamil, but the latter superseded by a large margin," Manoj Kumar, a representative of Rakki cinemas, told IANS.

"We have about 40-50 percent bookings for the next few days in this week. I don't think it's increase but I feel this is a pretty good number for a dubbed Hindi film. Aamir Khan's presence made a lot of difference," he added.

X-mas fashion: Carefree styling is the mantra

0
0

Are you stuck with traditional red and white for Christmas dos? Fashion experts say it's time for a makeover - stay fierce and indulge in carefree styling. Dress in fresh green, muted ivory and cherry coloured outfits to flaunt your refined balance of taste.

Designer Aniket Satam suggests that instead of deadly green white and red combination, select "fresh green and play with analogous shades to green".

"Be matured and use intense palette like bottle green, ox blood, and cherry. If you want to wear red and white, add a dash of graphics and make sure they are not fresh but muted ivory and cherry," Satam told IANS.

If that's not tempting, take references from timeless Hitchcock look, 1950s glamour and Victorian dolls.

"Dress up like a grown up high street fairytale lead or intense Victorian doll. One can also invest in pajama dressing, coats with slinky slip dresses or silk pajama suits.

"Festivities are all about reliving childhood and so stay fierce and indulge in carefree styling," added Satam.

Stylists offer options galore.

For instance, red jacket teamed up with green shift dress can help break the monotony of red and white look.

Doling out styling cues, designer Monika Arora said: "Go for shift blouses and bodycon dresses in colours such as deep greens, blues with different shades of reds."

"Also, one can go for western separates such as beige jumpsuits or dresses teamed up with red shrugs or jackets. Try green lowers such as pallazo's with black top," she added.

It's winter time, so it's okay to indulge in leather, tweed and furs, feels designer Vandy Mehra.

"Christmas as a festival is perfect to adorn furs to get into the festive spirit," Mehra told IANS, adding: "One can pick them as a whole garment or accents of fur and leather."

What are the don'ts for Christmas dressing?

"Avoid flashy satins and luminous sequins sheath, instead opt for dainty foiled chiffon, lurex and light brocades. Metallic is trendy and it will continue as a big trend, so go for that," said Satam.

Also, avoid coordinating your look. Simply merge various elements for a unique makeover. Team up black with brown when it comes to leather and gold with silver in the context of shine but do maintain a refined balance of taste.

Party look is incomplete without the right accessories, isn't it?

A vibrant scarf or a cute clutch bag in a bold colours, or oversize necklaces, statement cuffs and dramatic chandelier earrings are perfect match for your renewed wardrobe.

Charm bracelets and layered pearl strands are classic and iconic for festive dressing.

Hair accessories are huge, so invest in a heavily embellished baroque head band or embroidered combs to get a Russian princess look.

"B.A. Pass" director Ajay Bahl, who is ready to roll his next film, an adaptation of Akimitsu Takagi's Japanese novel "The Informer" has decided to cast Abhay Deol as one of the leads in the thriller.

Abhay may be seen as one of the protagonists along with the Sikkimese model-turned-actress Geetanjali Thapa.

Bahl says he owes Geetanjali one project.

"After I opted out of the Bhatts' project 'City Lights', Geetanjali also opted out. She didn't have to do that. In fact, from what I know of the equations in the entertainment industry, no one turns away from a project for the sake of showing solidarity."

"Geetanjali left the Bhatts' project after I did. I owe her a role in the film that I am doing now," he added.

Actress Shilpa Shukla, who gave a sterling performance in Bahl's "B.A. Pass", is also back in "The Informer".

"What Shilpa brought to 'B.A. Pass' was incredible. I wanted to cast her in my second film, but when I started work on 'City Lights' for the Bhatts, we needed a protagonist who was 26 years old. I couldn't sign her for 'City Lights'."

"Now I can work with Shilpa in 'The Informer'. I have just the role for her," he said.

'Prisoners' to 'Rush': 10 Hollywood films that wowed Indian audiences

0
0

From a father's desperate search for his missing daughter to the true story of rivalry between two Formula One car drivers, Hollywood's topography this year was rich with films that went beyond entertainment and provided a wholesome cinematic experience.

IANS lists the 10 best Hollywood films of 2013 released in India:

"Prisoners": A story that revolves around the search for two missing girls, Denis Villeneuve's "Prisoners" is one of the finest thrillers to come out of Hollywood this year albeit blood and corpses. Is it acceptable to do the wrong to get to the right? The film presents an opportunity for us to find answers to these questions, which in essence form the premise. Hugh Jackman as the grieving father chips in a career best performance.

"Gravity": Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" is a visually stunning film that literally makes you float as you leave the cinema hall. It is the most successful Hollywood flick of the year in India, making a whopping Rs.40 crore and successfully completing 50-day runs in several cities. The film is about a space shuttle that is destroyed and its medical engineer and a veteran astronaut who are stranded in space.

"Mud": No actor across the globe had a better year than Matthew McConaughey, who proved why he is the most talented in the business with films such as "Magic Mike" and "Dallas Buyers Club". In "Mud", a coming-of-age story, Matthew plays a drifter who lives in a boat on a tree. The film explores the unlikely friendship between him and two 14-year-olds.

"Monsters University": You don't have to be a fan of animation films to like "Monsters University", a prequel to highly successful "Monsters, Inc". The story tracks the college days of two most lovable animated characters Mike Wachowski and James P. Sullivan, who from being worst enemies grow on to become best friends. All that you want to know about team work is imbibed in the film with a dash of humour.

"Django Unchained": Who doesn't love a Quentin Tarantino picture? In this brilliant and brutal spaghetti western, Tarantino paints an atrociously violent tale of revenge against the backdrop of slave plantation of pre-civil war America. Featuring Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, "Django Unchained" is the most ruthlessly violent film to come from the factory of Tarantino.

"Warm Bodies": Can love bring someone from the dead? Well, it does in "Warm Bodies", about an unusual zombie falling in love with a beautiful young girl. It's a simple yet powerful film about human connection and love even during an apocalypse.

"Captain Philips": A riveting recounting of a true story, director Paul Greengrass took on a terrain very few filmmakers would dare to and succeeded in it. "Captain Philips" focusses on the 2009 hijacking of an American cargo ship by Somali pirates. The film, at heart, is about the victims of globalization and what they do for a living.

"About Time": Known for churning out memorable romantic flicks such as "Love Actually" and "Notting Hill", filmmaker Richard Curtis tugs at yours hearts with "About Time", a surprisingly thoughtful romantic-comedy and a coming-of-age story of a young man with a special gift to go back in time. Domhnall Gleeson is a perfect successor to Hugh Grant, who was popularised by Curtis many years ago.

"Rush": You don't have to know about Formula One racing to watch Ron Howard's "Rush", which captures the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda with an adrenaline pumping narrative. Greed, ambition, focus and attitude are explored in detail in the film, which was powered by the performances of Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl and Hans Zimmer's electrifying score.

"Pacific Rim": To save the world from monstrous sea creatures, filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro created giant human-controlled robots in his magnum opus "Pacific Rim", which was visually grand and entertaining from the get go. If you thought the visuals weren't enough to blow you away, then you should listen to the soundtrack by Ramin Djawadi.

It took 7 years to make 'Mahabharat': Amaan Khan

0
0

Amaan Khan's 3D animated film "Mahabharat" is coming out on Christmas Day and the director says it's a result of seven years of hard work.

Khan has pulled up a casting coup for the film as big names like Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Sunny Deol, Vidya Balan, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher and Manoj Bajpayee have lent their voice for various characters in the film, which is based on the epic "Mahabharat".

"It's a time consuming process and we started working on the film in 2007. We started with scripting and then dialogue writing," he said and added that they had to finish the dubbing first as it was an animated film.

"So we had to get the stars on board for the voiceover. Once the dubbing was done, we started working on the visuals. So technically, it took seven years to complete 'Mahabharat'," Khan said.

According to a report by FICCI-KPMG, the estimated size of the Indian animation industry is around $200 million (about Rs.1,100 crore), but Khan says that the genre has not been explored the way it is being done in Hollywood.

He said: "As a filmmaker I want to break all the barriers. We hope more filmmakers make animated film and we will have more audiences to watch it. From the producers' point of view, it's a huge risk though.

"I want to attempt something that has not been done before. Animation in India has not been explored as much as in Hollywood."

Indian men fancy platinum jewellery: Survey

Indian men like gold and silver jewellery, but nowadays they prefer platinum, reveals a survey.

The survey was conducted by Platinum trade body Platinum Guild International (PGI) in cities such as Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Delhi to have an understanding of men’s lifestyle and mindset towards purchasing and wearing jewellery especially platinum.

The survey focused on men in the age groups of 25-31 years and 33-45 years. The common factor in both the age groups is that they want financial security that leads to an increase in jewellery buying sentiments, said a statement.

“Quality time is spent on evaluating the highest quality hallmarked jewellery that is of great value and offers differentiated designs,” said Vaishali Banerjee, country manager India, PGI.

She added: “Through the ages, the most discerning of men have preferred platinum when it came to their jewellery. Young men today are not only looking at bands in platinum, but are also taking to platinum chains, and bracelets. The look of platinum and its weight appeals to men as it is understated, yet sophisticated and elegant and those who own it are considered ahead of the curve.”

As per the survey, investment purchase in precious metals is prevalent across all age groups.

Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai ranked at the top as the consumers in these cities buy more jewellery, while in Gujarat, men prefer gold coins, biscuits and then jewellery.

Young men consider wearing jewellery as a symbol of adulthood, a trend noticeable in Delhi.

Priyanka Chopra would be best to play Mehrunisa: Anubhav Sinha

Author Manreet Sodhi Someshwar, whose "The Hunt for Kohinoor", the second book on Mehrunisa trilogy, has hit the stalls, and filmmaker Anubhav Sinha feel that if the literary work is adapted for the big screen, actress Priyanka Chopra would be apt to play the sleuth.

"No one fits the bill better than Priyanka Chopra with her strong feminine presence. With a combination of vulnerability and head-strong nature, Priyanka would portray Mehrunisa perfectly," Sinha said said in a statement. He launched the book recently, and is currently busy with the production of his women-centric drama “Gulaab Gang”, which stars Madhuri Dixit in the lead role.

The book follows a 96-hour journey of Mehrunisa, an Indian female Sherlock Holmes. It is a hunt through the world's most dangerous terrain in order to retrieve the precious diamond - Kohinoor.

Someshwar would love to turn her books into the film.

"Looking at the current set of Bollywood actors, Priyanka comes closest to my perception of Mehrunisa, and I would love to make this series of books into a movie one day," said the author, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.

Her first book in the Mehrunisa series was titled “The Taj Conspiracy”.

Censor ordered 157 cuts for 'Miss Lovely': Director

Ashim Ahluwalia’s internationally acclaimed film "Miss Lovely" is ready to hit the Indian screens with an ‘A’ certificate, but the director says the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had initially asked for 157 cuts to make it suitable for viewing in India.

Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Niharika Singh in the lead roles, "Miss Lovely" competed in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

Talking about his tryst with the Indian censor board, Ahluwalia said: "It actually took me a year to get it passed, there are cuts.”

Set in the 1980s, "Miss Lovely" talks about the world of C-grade cinema. Ahluwalia said the film, ready to release in the country Jan 17, next year, was reviewed “four times” by the censor board.

“I don't think anybody has gone through a review four times. I started with being given 157 cuts and that was like killing the film, and there was no point in showing it," Ahluwalia said Monday at a press meet of the film here.

"So we went back, argued and the foul language cuts were removed. These are C-grade film producers (in the film) and they won't speak family language. So the cuts were gradually reduced and finally we were down to three to four major cuts ... those were nude scenes and they are not allowed,” he added.

Ahluwalia also said that there are some blurred scenes, “but for the most part I am quite satisfied”.

He says “Miss Lovely” is for a niche audience, therefore, while getting distributors, he ensured the film reaches the right viewers.

"A film like this is not a mass level film. We are not releasing 5,000 prints. It is a very gritty film, a real film. So it's just hard to get people (distributors) to understand how to release it. I just wanted to get it right and get to the right audience," Ahluwalia said.

"I don't want to trick someone. I want people to watch the film because they want to know what that world is like. That's why it took me a while. The film releases in the US in March," he added.

I want to be directed by my father: Alia Bhatt

0

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan's youngest-born Alia Bhatt has gone from the baby of the family to the babe of Bollywood in no time at all. The 20-year-old now has an impossible dream.

"I want to be directed by my father (Mahesh Bhatt). But I don't think he will ever direct again,” said Alia.

Bhatt, the director of “Arth”, “Saaransh”, and “Zakhm” among others, quit direction in post “Kartoos” and “Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan” in 1999. Now he focuses on production part of his banner Vishesh Films, which he co-owns with his brohter Mukesh Bhatt.

“But yes, I want to work for my home company (Vishesh Films). I am not intimidated by my father. I am only intimidated by his intelligence. He may be a lot older than me. But at heart he's as young as I am. At home, he's more energetic than all of us," said Alia.

She debuted in 2012 with “Student of The year”, and this year she didn't have any relaese.

Talking about her 2013 experience, she said: “It has been a pretty tumultuous year for me. Yes, it was a decisive year. It was a year that I'd remember mainly for shooting 'Highway'. Sometimes I forget I am just one film old. I am working on three projects. I've three films with Dharma Productions. It all seems unreal.”

‘Highway’ helped me to connect with myself, says Alia Bhatt

0
0

From sleeping under the tree to sitting on the road and eating - Alia Bhatt did all for Imtiaz Ali's "Highway" and says that the film helped her connect “with the person within me”.

"It helped me to connect with the person within me. My father always said the day an actor finds oneness with the person within is the day he or she becomes a true actor. I think I found that person during 'Highway'. I don't know how much it helped me to grow as an actor, but the film got me to know things about myself that I didn't know," said Alia.

Having played a fashionable airhead in her debut film "Student Of The Year", Alia has now completed a gruelling, gut-wrenching physically and emotionally exhausting film with Ali.

"It was very difficult," she said and added: "I realise other actors probably come to something like Imtiaz Ali's 'Highway' after maybe six to seven films behind them."

"When Imtiaz offered me the role, I was surprised. I've had no training in acting at all, and that in a way proved an advantage. Imtiaz was able to mould my personality in the way he wanted. So a lack of training proved an advantage for the film," she added.

Alia roughed it out on the "Highway" project, travelling on road, eating at roadsides, living a nomad's existence during the film's shooting.

She said: "I never thought it would be what it turned out to be. 'Highway' has helped me to evolve as a person and an actor. It was...therapeutic! I felt so connected with the surroundings. It was both physically and emotionally challenging.

"The role made me push boundaries within myself, which I didn't know existed. Until you push yourself, you don't know how tough you are. By the end of the shooting, I was comfortable sitting on the road and eating, and sleeping under a tree. By the end of the film, I didn't miss my comfortable bed at home."

Alia has so far led a pretty sheltered life.

"I'd say the girl I played in 'Student Of The Year' was closer home. ‘Highway’ took me to a different world. I've been to boarding school where we didn't lead sheltered lives. And I've been for trekking with my mom. But nothing prepared me for the life that I experienced in 'Highway'."

No time for the 20-year-old, daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan, to be with her parents and friends.

"Yes, I guess my life has changed. I am suddenly working hard. To be honest, I missed spending time with my family. But now after a year of shooting I am trying to again spend as much time as possible with my family. During the beginning of the year after 'Student Of The Year' was released, I couldn't have time of my own. Now I make sure to take time off," she said.

It has all changed: Big B on award functions

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan says the format of the award function was different earlier as in those days the winners were declared before the event itself.

"In those early years, the winners were not announced by envelope at the last minute ... they were announced much earlier, and the anticipation used to be the actor that would present them ... such was the format ... until it all changed," the 71-year-old posted on his blog.

"Once that particular venue changed and became this great big monster of an event, held at stadiums, with hundreds of visitors and live performances ... all this never happened then," he added.

He recalls that it used to be "a very sober and controlled affair", adding: "I remember when at this venue (Shanmukhananda Hall) for the first time they introduced the concept of TV inside the foyer of the hall as you walked in, with a very hesitant anchor almost making an apology of a venue bite for perhaps the only channel then - the state run DD, we all felt most awkward and almost abhorring the idea of saying anything. But look what has transpired since."
