Evening on beach - Sidharth's pick on romance

0
0

Sidharth Malhotra's idea of real life romance would be an intimate setting on a beach with an "interesting partner".

The model-actor, who made his Bollywood debut with "Student Of The Year" and romanced Alia Bhatt, will now be seen in romantic comedy "Hasee Toh Phasee" with Parineeti Chopra.

Asked about his idea of real life romance, he said: "My romantic evening will be intimate - probably two people and not in a very crowded place. I would like to go to a secluded place somewhere, hopefully on a beach."

Sidharth spoke on the sidelines of the unveiling of the signature "Hasee Toh Phasee" love seat here Thursday.

He says he has a special connect with the sea.

"I like sea. My father was in the merchant navy, so I have travelled a lot on the sea. So, hopefully my romantic evening will be on a beach with an interesting partner," he added.

In "Hasee Toh Phasee", Sidharth plays the role of Nikhil, and he finds a personal connect with the character.

"He (character of Nikhil in the film) is very ambitious. He wants to do well. He is a bit confused in terms of doing what his family wants and what he wants. I think it is very true to all the youths today.

"Sometimes they get pressurised (by things like) 'My mom wants me to do this, my father wants me to do this'. And this boy (Nikhil) is equally confused in that sense.

"He sticks by his commitments if he has made to his girlfriend or his lover, and that is very interesting as well. So, this character is pretty much close to me when I was in college," he added.

Produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions and directed by Vinil Mathew, "Hasee Toh Phasee" is slated to release Feb 7, 2014.

Great cinema will emerge from Pakistan, Bangladesh: Naseeruddin Shah

0
0

Seasoned Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah says "we are too happy with ourselves" but the future belongs to SAARC nations like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka in terms of good cinema.

Naseer, who has been part of Pakistani director Shoaib Mansoor and director duo Meenu Gaur and Farjad Nabi's "Khuda Kay Liye" and "Zinda Bhaag", respectively, says the political relations between the two neighbouring nations may not be ideal, but the commoners on the other side of the border are "curious about us (Indians)" and "look at us with admiration".

"I have been visiting Pakistan quite frequently since I did 'Khuda Kay Liye', but I have not met anybody in India who can say that I have a Pakistani friend. I think it's really sad," Naseer said in a group interview.

"...They (Pakistanis) are, in fact, very curious about us. They look at us with awe and admiration," added the 63-year-old, who feels helpless due to the political scenario.

"I am not a politician, so I can't do a damn thing about it. All I can do is that when I go there, I do classes with university students in Lahore.

"I have a feeling that great cinema will emerge from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, definitely not from us. We are just too happy with ourselves. But these are the countries from which great cinema and art will emerge in the next 50 years or so," said Naseer.

Known for his impressive oeuvre that boasts of films like "Nishant", "Aakrosh", "Sparsh", "Mandi", "Ardh Satya" and "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro", the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan winner recently gave acclaimed performances in "Firaaq", "Ishqiya" and "A Wednesday".

Currently busy promoting his film "Dedh Ishqiya", Naseer describes "promotions as waste of time".

He said: "Promotions can't make an unsuccessful film successful. Promotions can only make a Rs.100 crore movie into a Rs.200 crore movie. I don't know why they are not satisfied with Rs.100 crore."

He also feels that promotions are not fruitful for him.

"In my case, where I didn't do any promotions, those films worked. I didn't promote 'Ishqiya', 'A Wednesday' and 'The Dirty Picture'. And whichever films I promoted have flopped."

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, "Dedh Ishqiya", coming out next month, has Madhuri Dixit in the lead role. Arshad Warsi and Huma Qureshi will also be seen in pivotal roles.

Didn't sign Honey Singh for monetary purpose: Vishal Bhardwaj

0

Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, who has roped in rapper-singer Honey Singh to sing a song for his forthcoming production venture "Dedh Ishqiya", says he didn't sign the singer for monetary gains.

Written by lyricist Gulzar, the song has been picturised on Arshad Warsi's character Babban in the film helmed by Abhishek Chaubey. Singer Sukhwinder went behind the mic with Honey Singh for the song.

"Dedh Ishqiya", a sequel to 2010 film "Ishqiya", is a rustic drama set in a small town in Uttar Pradesh.

"As a producer and director (Chaubey), it is our choice. Nobody has forced us to sign Honey Singh for the song," Bhardwaj said here at the music launch of the film and added that he doesn't need "any singer for any monetary thing".

Considering the theme of the film and the kind of music that Honey Singh is known for, the two don't blend together. But Bhardwaj, who has composed music for the film, describes the song as a heady cocktail.

"I think the contrast of Yo Yo Honey Singh, my music and Gulzar saab's lyrics can be a very good cocktail for the film," he said adding that "the song will come out soon".

Featuring Bollywood diva Madhuri Dixit in a pivotal role, "Dedh Ishqiya", set for Jan 10, 2014 release, also features Naseeruddin Shah and Huma Qureshi.

After a serious health scare, poet-writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar's life has been brightened with some joyful tidings. He has been awarded the Sahitya Akademi award, the country's highest literary honour, for his poems in the anthology entitled "Lava".

Happy to be on his feet again, physically and creatively, Akhtar said: "Mazey ki baat yeh hai ki eek parivaar mein teen sadasyon ko Sahitya Akademi award se samnanna gaya hai (Interestingly, three people from the same family have been honoured with the Sahitya Akademi award)."

"My father (poet-lyricist Jan Nisar Akhtar) got the Sahitya Akademi in 1976 for his collection of poems 'Khaak-e-dil'. My father-in-law Kaifi Azmi got the Sahitya Akademi award in 1973 for his collection of poems 'Awara Sajde'. Now it's me," added the prolific writer, who is married to actress Shabana Azmi.

Akhtar can't stop marvelling at the beauty of the coincidence.

"It may be possible for an awardee's father or his father-in-law to win the same award. But for all three to win the same honour seems a bit difficult. I feel honoured that I am the recipient of an award that two such distinguished members of my family have received."

His lower back ailment, which led to his hospitalisation in Delhi, is healing fast.

"I still feel some stiffness in my lower back. But the pain is now gone. God has been kind to me. He has given me so much. I can't be complaining about a few days of pain and immobility," he said.

Bollywood box office verdict: Story as powerful as stars

0
0

The year enjoyed its big-ticket movies like "Chennai Express" and "Krrish 3" at the Bollywood box office, but it also welcomed small wonders. High on content and performances, acclaimed films like "Ship Of Theseus" and "The Lunchbox" not only exhibited the zest and zeal of filmmakers, but also showed their fearlessness in trying new genres and unique treatments.

IANS picks up 10 such refreshing small wonders from 2013, which were not gold spinners, but whetted the appetite of viewers looking for meaningful content:

"ABCD: AnyBody Can Dance": The 3D dance film "ABCD" not only introduced the Indian audiences to a new genre but also gave budding choreographers a platform to display their skills. Directed by choreographer Remo D'Souza, it starred a host of choreographers including big names like Prabhudheva and Ganesh Acharya along with upcoming ones. Even though the film, made on an approximately Rs.12 crore budget, received a lukewarm response, it garnered Rs.19.5 crore ($3.127 million) in its opening weekend and wowed everyone with its dance sequences.

"Kai Po Che": Based on friendship, "Kai Po Che" won many hearts. The Abhishek Kapoor-directorial saw the big screen debut of TV actors Sushant Singh Rajput and Amit Sadh as best friends. Rajkumar Rao also featured as the third friend. Not only the film, a big screen adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's "The 3 Mistakes of My Life", was loved by many, it helped freshers in getting good projects. The film grossed approximately Rs.43.50 crore in the domestic market and its overseas collection was Rs.12 crore.

"Mere Dad Ki Maruti": A laugh riot, "Mere Dad Ki Maruti" was a light-hearted refreshing comedy revolving around the bantering between a father and his son. Although Saqib Saleem as the son and Ram Kapoor as the dad entertained the viewers, its box office business wasn't satisfactory. Those who saw the film however appreciated the dialogues.

"Aashiqui 2": Sequels are a gamble as they often fail to match up to the original, but "Aashiqui 2" turned out to be an exception. The love story, featuring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, was lapped up by the masses and collected approximately Rs.78 crore at the box office. Directed by Mohit Suri, the film's music was a big hit as well.

"Fukrey": Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's small budget production "Fukrey" proved that hero-heroine-based love stories are not the only ones that click at the box office. Directed by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba, it did a business of over Rs.30 crore with names like Richa Chaddha, Vishakha Singh, Pulkit Samrat and Priya Anand carrying the film on their shoulders.

"Bhaag Milkha Bhaag": A biopic on legendary athlete Milkha Singh, sports-based "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" hit the bull's eye at the box office. For the viewers it was a delight to watch well-trained Farhan Akhtar as the Flying Sikh on the big screen. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, it also had stellar performances by Sonam Kapoor and Divya Dutta. It reaped gold at the box office and crossed the Rs.100 crore mark.

"Madras Cafe": It was not a typical entertainer. Set against the backdrop of the Sri Lankan civil war, the film was a mix of fact and fiction. It's not easy to involve movie lovers in such a serious drama, but Shoojit Sircar nailed it with "Madras Cafe". The political thriller, starring John Abraham, was made on a budget of less than Rs.10 crore buted collect Rs.24 crore in the first four days of its release itself.

"Ship Of Theseus": Debutant director Anand Gandhi struck the right chord with his thought-provoking "Ship Of Theseus", made on a shoestring budget of Rs.2.5 crore. Filmmaker Kiran Rao released the poignant and original drama in collaboration with UTV Motion Pictures in select few cities, but the film that revolved around an experimental photographer, an ailing monk and a stock broker, enjoyed a satisfactory run in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata.

"Shahid": Based on the life of slain human rights activist and lawyer Shahid Azmi, Hansal Mehta-directed critically acclaimed "Shahid", starring Rajkumar Rao in the title role, received ample support from the film industry and also enjoyed a good run at the box office. It collected Rs.2.05 crore in its opening weekend.

"The Lunchbox": After being appreciated at various international film festivals, "The Lunchbox" proved its mettle on the domestic front too. An unconventional love story of a married woman, who is unsatisfied with her life, and an elderly man, who lost his wife many years back, collected approximately Rs.1.25 crore on its opening day. If viewers and critics raved about director Ritesh Batra's film with universal appeal, they were equally overwhelmed by Irrfan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Nimrat Kaur's performances in the medium budget movie.

Armaan was arrested Monday night for allegedly assaulting Sofia in the "Bigg Boss - Saath 7" house. Her complaint was the result of an argument that broke out between the two and Armaan ended up hitting Sofia with a mop, which left her injured.

However, he has resumed his stay in the reality show after completing legal formalities Tuesday.

'Soodhu Kavvum' to 'Lucia': 10 southern films that wowed audience

0
0

Out of the 400-odd films released in four southern languages - Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, the following films may not have earned a robust box-office number but still managed to elicit positive response from the audience and critics alike.

IANS lists 10 best southern films of 2013:

"Onayum Aatukuttiyum": It's the most underrated Tamil film of the year from filmmaker Mysskin, who also featured in it with a bevy of newcomers. Fittingly titled "Onayum Aatukuttiyum", which translates to "The Wolf And The Lamb", it is a touching story about the redemption of an ex-assassin (wolf) on a mission to amend his past with the help of a medical student (lamb). Maestro Ilayaraja's background score breathed life into the masterpiece.

"Lucia": The film changed the way how others looked at the Kannada film industry, usually popular for producing loud commercial films, mostly remakes of its southern counterparts. Not only did "Lucia" earn critical as well as commercial acclaim but also introduced the concept of crowd-funding and paved the way for aspiring filmmakers. A story set against the backdrop of lucid dreaming, the film is already being remade in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi.

"Mumbai Police": Contrary to how cop flicks are made in Indian cinema, this Malayalam crime thriller is a cut above several films in the same genre across industries. "Mumbai Police" is a well-narrated and well-performed realistic picture backed by the support of an apt cast, to which you don't mind rooting for.

"Soodhu Kavvum": Dark Tamil comedy shows it means to make a film is just to make audiences laugh. Unarguably the funniest film of the year, "Soodhu Kavvum" is powered by the presence of poster boy Vijay Sethupathy. A box-office blockbuster, it revolves around four misfit kidnappers who try something way out of their league. Imran Khan will feature in the Hindi remake of the film, which will be produced by Rohit Shetty.

"Anthaku Mundu Aa Tharavatha": A rare Telugu film that proves it is possible to make a modern-day romantic tale sans sex and vulgarity. With Indraganti Mohan Krishna at the helm of it, "Anthaku Mundu Aa Tharavatha" doesn't dare to experiment, but questions the spate of romantic films that reek of cheesy one-liners and respects the intelligence of a viewer. And what a comeback film for "Roja" fame Madhoo!

"Neram": A story that revolves around the events that take place in a single day in the life of the protagonist, the Tamil thriller-comedy focusses on the importance of time in one's life and its subsequent repercussions. "Neram" was one of the few films in the language that pleasantly surprised everybody who watched it. Alphonse Putharen, who directed the film, will soon remake it in Hindi.

"North 24 Kaatham": An endearing story about the meeting of three strangers on a hartal day and their journey. Debutant director Anil Radhakrishna Menon's Malayalam drama "North 24 Kaatham" is about life's randomness and hope. Packed with intermittent humour, this is one of the best films of actor Fahadh Faasil, who had 10 more releases this year.

"Swamy Ra Ra": A simple story about fate, the Telugu crime-comedy revolves around three friends who rob for a living. Laced with humour and occasional thrills, "Swamy Ra Ra" is a welcome change for the industry plagued by mindless commercial outings. The film's music was one of the best soundtracks of the year.

"Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi": A Malayalam road movie that more or less could be termed as a coming-of-age story of two friends, who hit the road and along the journey learn about politics, friendship, family and religion. It's a whiff of fresh air for moviegoers. Strong performances by an ensemble cast and apt music make it nothing short of spectacular.

"Mallela Theeram Lo Sirimalle Puvvu": A clean and dignified Telugu film about a woman's search for love, liberation and self-respect, "Mallela Theeram Lo Sirimalle Puvvu" is one of the finest works in the family genre albeit melodrama and emotional outbursts. It's a shame that such a beautiful film had to release only in fewer cinemas.

Sanjay Dutt out on parole, second time in three months

Incarcerated Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was released on a month's parole from Yeravada Central Jail here to look after his ailing wife Manyata, official sources said Saturday. Dutt, 54, left for Mumbai immediately.

He had sought parole early this month from the Pune divisional commissioner which was granted.

However, the issue became controversial with most opposition parties opposing the "preferential" treatment to Dutt.

Denying the opposition charges, Home Minister R.R. Patil even said he would seek details of Manyata's illness.

The release came a day after the Maharashtra legislature's winter session ended in Nagpur Friday.

Earlier, well known cardiologist Ajay Chaughule, who had examined Manyata, revealed she was suffering from heart and liver problems which were "causing concern".

Manyata had complained of chest pain and sudden weight loss a few weeks ago and tests detected irregular heart beats and a large tumour growth on her liver, according to Chaughule, who is attached with Global Hospital, Mumbai, and specialises in heart and liver problems.

This is the second time the actor has come out on parole in the past three months.

Dutt was granted parole Oct 1 for a fortnight on medical grounds which was extended by another fortnight and he returned to jail Oct 30.

He was convicted and sentenced to five years in jail for his involvement in the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and has been in jail since mid-May this year to serve out the remaining 42 months of his sentence.

'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' a completely fake film: Naseeruddin Shah

0
0

Seasoned Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah says he didn't like "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" and feels it was a completely fake film.

"It's a completely fake film. Farhan has no doubt worked very hard but building up muscles and growing your hair is not exactly working hard on your acting.

"At least he should have tried to look like Milkha. Milkha is mighty pleased by him and he imagines that this was his life, he imagined he looked like that. Doesn't he have photographs of himself from 1960s Olympics," Naseer told IANS.

"Bhaag Milkha..." was a biopic on the life of former athlete Milkha Singh, portrayed by actor Farhan Akhtar. Released July 5 this year, the film did a whopping business of over Rs.100 crore and also found acceptance from the audience of all age groups and strata.

Naseer however feels that "Farhan was made to look like Rocky and not Milkha".

"All the girls screamed for him when he appeared and so on which is lovely. He looked terrific but he did not look like Milkha. It's was just too fake a film. Yes it was very beautifully shot which makes it technically an excellent film," said the actor.

Naseer will next be seen in "Dedh Ishqiya" that also features Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi. The film is set to release Jan 10.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is in a nostalgic mode on his mother's death anniversary Saturday and says that she was "the most beautiful woman in the world".

His mother Teji Bachchan passed away in 2007 in Mumbai's Lilavati hospital.

"It is hard to reminisce those moments and hours at the hospital when she breathed her last, my mother. The 71-year-old also said that his mother fought like a tigress during her ill health.
