Nandita Das finds it tough to pick Saroj Khan's moves

Actress Nandita Das, who will be seen with husband Subodh Maskara in upcoming Spanish film "Traces of Sandalwood", finds it tough to keep pace with ace choreographer Saroj Khan for one of the songs of the film.

After 23 years in the film industry, Nandita has finally got a chance to do a typical Bollywood dance with Anna Soler-Pont's film.

She would be performing the full-on filmy dance for the first time in her career and the director has roped in the formidable choreographer to teach Nandita her dance steps.

Rehearsals are on full-swing for what promises to be the biggest challenge of Nandita's career.

Apparently Saroj Khan, known to reduce the likes of Raveena Tandon to tears with her exacting instructions, is giving Nandita sleepless night over the filmy gyrations.

Speaking shyly of her first steps at Bollywood dancing, Nandita exclaims: "Can you believe it, in all these years I've never danced on-screen, probably because I've been seen in a particular image both off and on-screen. But hey, I also enjoy dancing! And I'll prove it."

Known to be a hard task-master, Saroj Khan is spending considerable time coaching Nandita on the "latka-jhatka".

Apparently the actress is not too comfortable with some of the gyrations, but she is getting there.

Sunil Varma is known as one of the popular Telugu comedians, who is currently enjoying the status of a lead actor. But actor-filmmaker Tanikella Bharani, who has roped him in his upcoming Telugu period-drama "Bhaktha Kannappa", feels he will do total justice to the title role.

Sunil will essay the role of Kannappa, Lord Shiva's ardent disciple.

"Sunil is no more a comedian. I mean he can still make audiences laugh but he has evolved as an actor over the years. He has the potential that he can use to play any role with ease. I'm confident that he will do justice to the role of Kannappa in my film," Bharani told IANS.

Bharani, who has started working on the pre-production of the film, will revisit classics on the same story.

"There have been a few films on Kannappa already. I will be revisiting them and see if I can learn from them. I also intend to read some literature on the character and see if it can help me with my development of the character," he said.

"It will be an out-and-out period-drama set against the backdrop of 14th century. We plan to start shooting soon," added Bharani.

Sunil, meanwhile, is busy completing upcoming Telugu romantic-comedy "Bheemavaram Bullodu".

Actress Upasana Singh, who plays the popular character of "bua" (paternal aunt) on "Comedy Nights With Kapil", says nobody can replace Sunil Grover as Gutthi on the show.

The show is aired on Colors TV.

"Nobody else other than Sunil (Grover) can play Gutthi. Only he is Gutthi," Upasana Singh told reporters here at the red carpet of Colors Golden Petal Awards.

Reportedly, the actor left the show recently as his contract was getting over and the show's producer and host Kapil Sharma was not ready to give him a hike he had asked for.

But now it is believed that Sunil is set to come up with his own show soon.

After Sunil left the show, actor Gaurav Gera was roped in to play another character Dulari on the show, and Upasana says all the new entrants in the show are doing good but Gutthi is irreplaceable.

"But yes, new characters are coming in the show and they are performing good, but nobody can replace Gutthi. Not even Colors wants to replace Gutthi," she added.

Sunil's character Gutthi won the audience's heart with her brilliant introduction sequence and also her signature song "Aap aaye hain hamare ghar mein, phool khile hain gulshan gulshan...". Then there were other Gutthi specials like "Juice me!".

Upasana, who has become a household name with her dialogues like "Bittu, Kaun hai ye aadmi?", says she misses Sunil aka Gutthi and wants him back on the show.

"I miss Gutthi a lot because our team is like a family. We all miss Sunil a lot and I want him to come back to the show," said Upasana.

Accessories have become prime attraction

$

The accessories market in India has evolved with men demanding more colour and style, and with women looking at something more than just what holds their keys and mobile, says Dilip Kapur, president of Indian leather goods manufacturer Hidesign.

"Accessories have moved base from function to prime attraction. You don't need suspenders or belts to hold up your pants anymore and you certainly don't need a pocket square to wipe your brows. The past 10 years have seen a healthy exchange between women and men's fashion," Kapur told IANS.

"Men now love more colour and more interesting shapes," he said adding that for women "bags are not seen just as necessities for carrying keys or mobiles anymore. Modern Indian women increasingly insist on handbags that express both their personality, sense of style and most important, the well-defined interiors."

There are options galore - and the idea behind it is to keep up with the changing lifestyle.

"Men's briefcases have become sleeker. Messengers and city bags are more prevalent as work wear gets more relaxed. Man-bags and totes have made a lasting impression with the stylish, urban male across cities. We create new styles every season and keep updating new shapes as the consumer's needs change. All our new city bags and messengers now come with iPod holders," said Kapur.

Hidesign was started in Auroville in Tamil Nadu in 1978. With as many as 84 exclusive stores and a distribution network in 23 countries as well as a strong online retail presence, it has a current turnover of Rs.150 crore (approximately $25 million).

The brand experienced a strong growth of 213 percent in e-commerce in the first half of 2013-14, and Kapur expects the online growth to be at least three-fold in the next two to three years, Kapur said.

The brand's quality lies in its handcrafted, natural bags, made from eco-friendly vegetable tanned leather, and it caters well to customers of both the genders. Women, especially, have become conscious about their choice of handbags as over the past decade, they have increasingly become a part of the working demographic.

"We see a demand for Hidesign bags for their work and day requirements. We have begun making laptop compatible bags and sleeves, while our new collection is iPad compatible.

"Our latest work wear collection presents a wide range of shoulder bags and totes, and some of our new styles have features like well-organised interiors, long handle drop lengths and beautiful combination leathers which makes them a smart option for the corporate look and perfect companion on transit and business trips," said Kapur.

The variety is an active response to the "lifestyle of young women". Depending on the occasion and age group, there are various handbag preferences and options for today's woman.

"Some prefer organized interiors with two to three compartments along with organizer pockets and inner zip pockets for which we have our work totes. There are cross bodies and long slings as all day options and party wear. On the other hand, our cosmetic day bags are perfect for those women who prefer large single compartments and goes well with casual attire.

"Increasingly, women on the move opt for cross bodies and sling bags that are comfortable to use throughout the day and at the same time look trendy. We have observed that while younger women like small shoulder bags or hand held clutches for evening outs, older women choose the practicality of a mid-size bag for daily use and larger bags for weekend trips," he said.

Prabhu Solomon spends more time on VFX for 'Kayal'

Director Prabhu Solomon, who is currently busy shooting for upcoming Tamil romantic-thriller "Kayal", has decided to spend more time on the visual effects and complete it before he starts shooting other portions of the film.

"There are about 15-20 minutes of visual effects-facilitated scenes in the film, especially towards the climax. I have already shot them because I felt I may run out of time if I do it in the end, closer to the release of the film. I didn't want to do a shoddy job and, therefore, already worked on it with visual effects designers," Prabhu told IANS.

"In essence, we shot the climax first and now are busy working on the rest of the film. Most filmmakers shell out very less or limited time for VFX and that's why the output is not outstanding when we see it on the big screen," he added.

Starring newcomers Chandran, Anandhi and Vincent, the film is currently being shot in different locations such as Kanyakumari, Ladakh and Rajasthan.

TV actress Kanika Maheshwari, who is married to businessman Ankur Ghai, is having a tough time managing between the schedules of "Nach Baliye 6" and "Diya aur Baati Hum."

"Reality shows are real and we have to prepare our act in five days. It is very tough, I shoot 'Diya aur Baati Hum' also. So for me to give 12 hours to that, then the performance and also give time to him (husband Ankur Ghai) is making things really tough," Kanika said in an interview.

Apart from a tough hectic schedule, Kanika find all other pairs on the reality show very inspiring.

"There are a lot of jodis like Gurmeet-Debina (Gurmeet Choudhary-Debina Bonnerjee), Rakesh-Riddhi (Rakesh Bapat-Riddhi Dogra), and Raju-Shikha (Raju Srivastava-Shikha Srivastava) who are very inspiring. Some of them are dancers but some are non-dancers," Ankur said.

However, for Kanika, Vinod (Thakur) and Raksha are the most inspiring of them all.

"For me, Vinod and Raksha are very inspiring. That man is handicapped and to see him perform gives me inspiration that if he can then I can do a lot more," Kanika said.

"Nach Baliye 6" is a dance reality show featuring real life celebrity couples. Director Sajid Khan, choreographer Terence Lewis and actress Shilpa Shetty are the judges of the show.

In Bollywood's mixed year, 'Chennai Express' shines

$
0
0

This year, the Rs.100-crore ($16 million) club was overhauled and swamped, as "Chennai Express" did super-fast record collection of Rs.216 crore (approximately $35 million) at the box office. In what trade experts called a mixed year for Bollywood, the estimated turnover so far has been Rs.2,633 crore (approximately $424 million), and "Dhoom 3" is expected to add to the gains.

Around 166 films released so far and the total collection of the year 2013 is already higher than last year's Rs.2,423 crore, but 2013 lags behind in number of blockbusters.

Last year, as many as nine films - "Agneepath", "Housefull 2", "Rowdy Rathore", "Ek Tha Tiger", "Barfi!", "Jab Tak Hai Jaan", "Son Of Sardaar", "Bol Bachchan" and "Dabangg 2" - joined the Rs.100 crore club.

In comparison, only five films - "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", "Chennai Express", "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", "Krrish 3" and "Ram-Leela" managed to surpass the Rs.100 crore collection mark this year.

Regardless of few bumper hits, Rajesh Thadani from Multimedia Combines defines it as "a decent" year. "2013 has been a decent year. In fact, it was a mixed year. There were a few big films and a few average films that did well," Thadani told IANS.

Trade analyst Komal Nahta is on the same page and feels that the business has been "nice so far".

"We had some of the biggest films like 'Krrish 3' and 'Chennai Express' and several other films that did exceptionally well. It has been a mixed year with a variety of films in different genres. We had almost all kinds of films," said Nahta.

Though the number of films grossing Rs.100 crore was few, they set a new record.

Thadani said: "Last year we had nine films crossing the Rs.100 crore mark. We hardly have four or five films which crossed into Rs.100 crore club this year, but it has managed to compensate this with last year's collection."

"Chennai Express" collected Rs.216 crore, "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" Rs.185 crore, "Krrish 3" close to Rs.200 crore, "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" Rs.109 crore and "Ram-Leela" Rs.110 crore", Thadani said and pointed out that "we didn't have Rs.175 or Rs.200 crore collection in 2012".

Komal Nahta said: "Total five films have crossed the Rs.100-crore mark and among them, two have even touched Rs.200 crore club, which is fantastic."

Manoj Desai, executive director of G7 multiplex and Maratha Mandir, says that "Ram-Leela" was a surprise entry into the Rs.100 crore bracket.

"I feel compared to 2012, the year 2013 is better. A lot of unexpected films turned out well and did well. We were not expecting 'Ram-Leela' to hit Rs.100 crore, but it did. It came as a surprise."

This year, though small budget films didn't do as good business as in 2012, the experts claim it was a decent year for small fries as well.

Ashish Saksena, chief operating officer, BIG Cinemas, said: "The year has been good, but 15 to 20 percent lesser compared to 2012. I will say it has been a mixed year. As far as small films are concerned, 'Aashiqui 2', 'ABCD - AnyBody Can Dance', 'Special 26' and 'Grand Masti' did wonderful business."

Thadani too feels that in the small budget films segment, the four films did "exceptionally well".

Sources said that "Aashiqui 2" collected about Rs.79 crore, "ABCD" makers pocketed Rs.36 crore, "Kai Po Che" earned Rs.49 crore, "Fukrey" took home Rs.32 crore, "Special 26" earned Rs.67 crore, "Chashme Buddoor" grossed Rs.42 crore, "Madras Cafe" Rs.40 crore and "Go Goa Gone" Rs. 25 crore.

The much-awaited "Dhoom 3" is coming out Dec 20 and with Aamir Khan in the film as a grey character, it has raised the expectations of the people and the trade guru feels it will be a game changer.

Nahta said: "'Dhoom 3' will certainly be a game changer. It will break all the records and set a new record. A lot of craze and excitement is building up with 'Dhoom 3'."

In fact, advance booking for "Dhoom 3" will start Dec 18, said Desai and added: "I am very sure it will cross Rs.300 crore and will set a new record for 2014."

In a nutshell:

- Around 166 films have hit the screens so far.
- The estimated turnover of the industry so far has been Rs.2,633 crore.
- "Chennai Express" led the race with a collection of Rs.216 crore.
- As of now, five films have entered Bollywood's Rs.100 crore club in 2013.
- Unexpected films made it big.
- Trade experts believe it has been a mixed year overall.
- Small budget films did decent business, but not as much as last year.
- Hopes are high from Aamir Khan-starrer "Dhoom 3".

Actress Preity Zinta and filmmaker Karan Johar have urged the media to respect the privacy of their friends, Hrithik Roshan and his wife of 13 years, Sussanne, who have announced their split.

Hrithik released an official statement on Sussanne's decision to part ways with him after a relationship of 17 years - the duo dated four years before tying the knot Dec 20, 2000.

At the red carpet of the Colors Golden Petal Awards, Preity was asked to comment on the news.

She said: "I have one thing to say to the media with lots of humbleness...these are very personal moments for people, and please don't slander either him (Hrithik Roshan) or her (Sussanne). It is a very personal matter."

"I think you have to give them that space. It is very sad when everybody has their own personal comments," she added.

Karan, who shares a friendly bond with Hrithik and has worked with him in films like "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" and "Agneepath", also refrained from commenting.

"It is too personal to them (Hrithik and Sussanne) and, therefore, personal to us. So, I feel very uncomfortable talking about, especially anything too personal to close friends on a national platform," he added.

However, actor Anil Kapoor is hopeful about the couple's re-union in future.

"Hrithik is a family friend. He is like a younger brother to me, even Sussanne. I am very very fond of both of them. But I think these are the things that really happen in a relationship," Anil, who shares a friendly bond with the couple, said.

"I am very optimistic and hope they get back together," he added.

On Dec 13, Hrithik announced his wife Sussanne's decision to split from him after 13 years of marriage.

Together, the couple has two sons - Hrehaan and Hridhaan.

Remove make-up with care

Pop colours can brighten up your face, but to improve your skin ensure that you clean it with mild face wash once you get back home from your outings.

Makeover expert Aashmeen Munjaal shares how to go gentle on skin after exposing it to a heavy dose of make-up:

- Wash your face with mild face wash according to skin type. Clean your skin properly because the new kinds of make-up like high definition and air brush have granules which go deep in the pores.

- To remove the eye make-up, always use a remover with less number of chemicals. To prevent patchy and dark skin under your eye, apply aloe vera gel and massage it with ring finger in clockwise or anti-clockwise manner. To get a refreshing feeling you can put green tea ice bags.

- While cleanser removes make-up and dirt, you then need to use a toner to close the pores.

- Women have started using lipsticks that last for about nine to twelve hours. Use wet tissues to remove the lip colour. After removing the make-up, massage them in uplifting manner then apply a coat of glycerine to make your lips soft.

Naseeruddin finds fascination with Oscars 'laughable'

Actor Naseeruddin Shah, a veteran in the Hindi film world, says Indian filmmakers' fascination for the Academy Awards is "laughable". He believes "we are never going to win any".

The 63-year-old, who has featured in films like "Masoom", "Sarfarosh", "Iqbal" and "The Dirty Picture", was asked what he makes of the current scenario of Indian filmmakers fighting with each other to make it to the Oscars.

"The fascination with the Oscar...I find it laughable, because we are never going to win any. I mean those who are hoping about it just forget about it, because it's never going to happen. It's like chasing the rainbow," he said.

This year, Gujarati film "The Good Road" is India’s official submission for the foreign language film category at the 86th Academy Awards.

Naseeruddin says the fascination for an Oscar is futile.

"It's just a yearning for worldwide recognition and we feel that Oscars guarantees us that, so that's why there is this hankering for an Oscar. It's ridiculous. I think everybody should just keep making the kind of films they want to make," he added.

Meanwhile, the actor is currently busy promoting his film "Dedh Ishqiya". He shares the frame with Bollywood's dancing diva Madhuri Dixit and sets the record straight about his reported "steamy scenes" with her in the movie.

"There are no such scenes in the film. I think people just enjoy talking about this kind of stuff, so I am assuring those who want to see 'Dedh Ishqiya' that there are no steamy scenes between Madhuri and myself. It's all poetry but its good poetry," he said.

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, "Dedh Ishqiya" also features Arshad Warsi and Huma Qureshi.

No luck for 'Jackpot', 'What The Fish' at box office

Neither veteran actress Dimple Kapadia’s "What The Fish” nor adult films star-turned-actress Sunny Leone-starrer “Jackpot” managed to pull in audiences to theatres over the last weekend. Both films failed to meet expectations, say experts.

Puneet Sahay of Spice Cinemas says both the films didn’t do good business.

“We thought the films will at least have an occupancy of 50 percent, but even during weekend, the percentage didn’t go beyond 15. ‘Jackpot’ had 12 percent occupancy and ‘What The Fish’ got only 10 percent,” Sahay told IANS.

Co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, Kumud Shahi Malik and K.R. Harish's "What The Fish" was made within Rs.7.5 crore approximately. Directed by Gurmmeet Singh, the quirky comedy was released in about 500 screens in India Dec 13.

“It didn’t do great business. It earned around Rs.60 lakh. ‘Jackpot’ raked in about Rs.3 crore in three days,” said Rajesh Thadani from Multimedia Combines.

“Jackpot”, which also stars Naseeruddin Shah and Sachiin Joshi, was reportedly made between Rs.15 crore and Rs.20 crore. Directed by Kaizad Gustad and produced by Raina Sachiin Joshi, the film released in about 1,000 screens.
