I love my character in 'What The Fish': Dimple

$

Veteran actress Dimple Kapadia plays a 60-plus grumpy woman in Gurmmeet Singh's "What The Fish" and says she loves her character.

The National Award winning actress says when she heard the script of the fun-filled mysterious drama, she immediately fell for it.

"It has many layers. I love my character in the film. I am sure I was right in accepting this film. At this stage, I am not looking to work just because I must. I don't need to. My life is full," said the 56-year-old.

"There has to be something inviting or something fun for me to give so much time to. How many films have I done in the last ten years? Not more than six to seven, I am sure. Though I am not counting," she added.

She says people tell her that they miss her on the big screen, but she leads a hectic life.

"Look, I know people like you say you miss me on screen. That's very kind. But I have my own life, and very hectic and turbulent life. There are so many ups and downs," she said.

After her superstar-husband Rajesh Khanna died in July 2012, legal troubles over his property cropped up. The "Bobby" star says apart from that, a lot has happened in her life, but doesn't want anyone to tell her life's story through a book.

"Not just that. So much has happened in my life during the past six years. But a book on my life? No way! Every life is special. Every one has problems. Life has to be a roller coaster ride. Otherwise, what's the point of living? Why should I make a song and dance about mine?" asks the mother of Twinkle and Rinke.

"I became a wife at 15 and was a mother of two at 18. So what? Lots of women marry young and become mothers at a young age. The only really special thing that happened to my life was that I married superstar Rajesh Khanna," she added.

She says the "Anand" superstar swept the entire nation off its feet, including her.

"What can I say about him that hasn't already been said? It's my regret that his fans never saw me on screen with him. We did a film called 'Jai Shiv Shankar'. But it got shelved," said Dimple.

I can't imitate mom's designs: Nishka on Neeta Lulla

$

Nishka Lulla has inherited her mother Neeta's fashion designing talent, but the young designer says she can't imitate her National Award-winning mom's designs despite being an inspiration to her.

"I have learned a lot from my mother and one of them is hard work. She said that you have to work hard to make your own mark," Nishka told IANS on the sidelines of the opening day of India Resortwear Fashion Week 2013, Thursday.

"She also suggested that my designs need to have a definition of myself without imitating someone else. For instance, I can't imitate my mother's creation and make my own line," she added.

The designer, whose creations have been flaunted by the likes of Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin, showcased her resort wear line that she designed for an e-commerce site Stylista.com at the fashion gala.

"The line is very easy to wear. It is versatile and comfortable. The high point of the collection is that one can wear it like separates with whole lot of options to mix and match," said Nishka about the collection.

The collection has been inspired by the designer's travelling experiences and boasts of classic patterns and versatile pieces that can be worn to any occasion.

The designs have an eclectic mix of crop tops, dresses, trousers and jackets with fabrics that vary from cotton, crepe to organza.

The pastel colour palette ranges from minty greens and ice cream sundae pinks to muted greys and soft lavender.

Sharing the idea of collaborating with the site, she said that it was an attempt to reach a bigger market of people who shop online.

"I was very excited when I got to hear about the concept by Anjana Sharma (the woman behind Stylista.com). I felt it would be a great platform for my collection to have a wider reach to the market at affordable price points. After all, who doesn't want to shop online nowadays," she said.

'Jackpot'- noire film with boring twists in the tale (IANS Movie Review)

$

0

Film: "Jackpot"; Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Sachiin Joshi and Sunny Leone; Writer-Director Kaizad Gustad; No Rating

So here's the bottom line. Sunny Leone hardly ever strips in "Jackpot". The film is not about skin show. It's more about scratching smooth surfaces to get to the evil avaricious core of the human heart. Everyone is greedy in Kaizad Gustad's film, some more than the others. And every character is an imposter.

If you like films where a briefcase stashed with currency notes is tossed around with the cast in frenetic pursuit (think Guy Ritchie), then this is the film you would probably want to check out.

Noire cinema gets a twist in the tale. Ten years after his controversial and colourful "Boom", Gustad takes us on a Goan caper.

Shot with dexterity by Artur Zurawski in rain-drenched boats and the dockside desolation of Goa "Jackpot" is the kind of wild gambit of one-upmanship where heroes and wimps exchange places so swiftly and suddenly you don't know who is doing what. And to whom.

There are three main characters - let's just call them the Boss (Naseeruddin Shah), his moll (Sunny Leone) and the Boss' right hand man Francis (Sachiin Joshi).

The tightly packed episodes of the spiralling plot leave very little room for porous moments. There is no breathing space in the narration. Gustad piles up 'atmosphere' so aggressively, you fear the narration may collapse.

At 90 minutes "Jackpot" clocks quite a curious yarn, more notable for what it attempts than what it actually achieves. The narration dares damnation with episodes from the lives of the three main characters going back and forth as if time never really mattered to people who are on the road to monetary salvation.

It's all very confounding.

Gustad, who last made the badly received "Boom", does a ritzy take on the noire genre. Admittedly he lends an erotic edge to the game of one-upmanship with the Goan monsoon lending a sizzle and a drizzle that remain sadly unmatched by Leone's voluptuous presence.

Sachiin, toned up physically and underplaying his charlatan's part, and Leone can't seem to keep their hands off one another.

Naseer in an interesting blonde Bob Marley hairstyle brings a wicked gleam into every frame. And yes, he is in almost every frame probably trying to make sense of the plot the way he did while shooting for M.F. Hussain's "Gaja Gamini". There are as many coils, twists and tangles in the film's plot as there are in Naseer's wig, though the plot is not half as riveting as Naseer's hair.

Sadly the stylish packaging and striking cinematography remain unsupported by the plot and characters. Neither are interesting or dangerous enough to be endearing in their immorality.

Sorry, it just doesn't add up.

'What The Fish' sparklingly original, funny and warm (IANS Movie Review - Rating: *** 1/2)

$

0

Film: "What The Fish"; Cast: Dimple Kapadia, Vishal Sharma, Sumit Suri, Mithun Rodwittiya, Deepti Pujari, Manjot Singh and Manu Rishi; Director: Gurmmeet Singh; Rating: *** 1/2

So okay. Comedies are hard to sustain for more than an hour...and yes, this one does over-run its playing time by 20 minutes, although it's just about a 100 minutes in length. And that's a 100 conveying sustained satirical strength. The quality of the humour and the context of the characters' comic tangles is, on the ha-ha-ho-ho whole, adroitly maintained, sustained and executed.

So here goes. A cantankerous old woman in Delhi, Sudha Mishra (Dimple Kapadia, delightfully over-the-top) leaves her home and its two specific properties namely the pet fish and the money-plant, in the care of her couldn't-care-less niece, who promptly hands over the responsibility to her ever accommodating boyfriend.

The rest of this wackily wound-up comedy records the relay race styled exchange of the old woman's home's care from one set of noisy eccentric characters to another.

Besides its immensely warm underbelly, what captures your attention is the originality of the material. Here is a comedy that seeks no reference points from foreign sources, does not lean towards Hollywood for its humour quotient.

No, this is not a take on Chris Columbus'"Home Alone".

Set in Delhi, though not compulsively taken up with taking us on a tour of the capital, the narrative gets its energy from the robust telling of a reasonably sturdy comic situation. The wit is never derivative but constantly probing suburban eccentricities.

The character of the Haryanvi lout Hooda (Mithun Rodwittiya), who plays patron-lover to a Mary Kom lookalike boxer from Manipur, would be a laughing stock were he not so desperately pathetic.

The performances add to the narrative's flavourful texture.

The actors, young and old, are cleverly cast. While Dimple's cranky act is expectedly winsome (when has this actress not been a winner?), Manu Rishi as the neighbourhood lech who seduces his young friend's naive fiancee (Deepti Pujari) when she is home alone puts in the other outstanding performance.

Manu is an actor who knows his character's sleazy underbelly and nails it unabashedly.

There are other interesting characters, like the young vain Haryanvi boxer Rajpal(Vishal Sharma) who likes to crossdress in the night and performs a kathak mujra in the isolation of Dimple's mauled and misused abode.

And Manjot Singh as a pet shop owner, whose sales of a particular variety of pet fish escalate, is also in-sync with the satire.

Come to think of it, the actors are all delightful, careening from the comic to the crazy without losing a beat or succumbing to the pressures of the heated humour.

I found portions of the comedy to be undernourished and over baked. The climactic scream ended up as a shuddering whimper. But that didn't take away from the swing and the sting of the frenetic chuckle-worthy happenings.

Quirky, capricious and cute, "What The Fish" is a warm little concoction with pockets of endearing eccentricity and feyness. The midriff of the narrative sags. But there are ample measures of giggle-inducing characters hiding their own ridiculousness in the garb of urbane casualness.

Gurmmeet Singh keeps the proceedings frothy and even paced.

You may not come away with much of a message to take home. But by jove, you will never ever leave your home in the care of any relative after this.

Actress Madhuri Dixit, busy promoting her forthcoming women-centric drama "Dedh Ishqiya", admits that the world is male dominated and it's up to a woman how she makes a mark for herself.

"The whole world is male dominated, not just this industry," she said when asked whether the option gets narrowed down for an actress post-marriage and does she feel that the film industry is male dominated.

"There will be this difference, but it is up to a woman to make a mark for herself and fight for her rights. Woman has to work two times harder than men to prove herself again and again. That's the reality of life," the actress told IANS.

"But whatever you get in return is much more satisfying," added the star of films like "Dil", "Beta" and "Dil To Pagal Hai".

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, "Dedh Ishqiya" is Madhuri's first full-fledged film in six years and she has teamed up with veteran Naseeruddin Shah in the small-town based thriller.

Talking about Naseer, Madhuri said: "It was not challenging as such, but he is such a wonderful actor that it was delightful to work with him. Besides, each and every scene is written so beautifully that every character looks great."

Arshad Warsi and Huma Qureshi too feature in the movie, which is coming out in January next year.

Even at 46, Madhuri look as beautiful as ever.

When asked about her beauty secret, the mother of two said: "Discipline is the biggest secret. There is no other secret than discipline. My diet, lifestyle, and my habits... I have no bad habits... all these things reflect on your face and body."

The duo was dating for four years before they tied the knot Dec 20, 2000 post the success of Hrithik's debut film "Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai". They have two sons - Hrehaan and Hridhaan.

Actor-producer Aamir Khan would be happy if his daughter Ira joins Bollywood, but says he has no intention of imposing his decision on his children.

"I would love that, but I have no idea. I don't ask them," Aamir told IANS when asked would he be okay if his daughter joins filmdom.

Aamir has two children - son Junaid and daughter Ira with his ex-wife Reena. He also has a son named Azad with his current wife and filmmaker Kiran Rao.

"They should do what they feel like doing. No pressure from me or from any of us. If they decide to come to the films, I would like all my children enter films," he said.

"If they enter a field where I am in, Kiran is in, we will be able to work together, hopefully, and that would give me great amount of joy. So, I would be very happy if my daughter joins the films," said the 48-year-old.

Junaid is already assisting director Rajkumar Hirani in "Peekay", which stars Aamir, who also produces movies under his banner Aamir Khan Productions, which has made films like "Taare Zameen Par", "Peepli Live" and "Delhi Belly".

Will you produce Junaid's film?

"Junaid, why not? If he comes up with a good script and if I have the trust and faith in him as a director, then definitely. He will have to satisfy me like any other director.

"He is working with Raju and he is really happy being on the set that's a good thing and a good starting point. I think he is doing well. It depends on what he wants to do as he has not told me yet what he wants to do."

Rivals can be friends: Aamir Khan (Interview)

$

Aamir Khan, one of Bollywood's top stars who is set for the release of his "Dhoom 3", doesn't believe that rivals can't be friends. He not only adores his contemporary Salman Khan but also believes that Salman is a bigger star for his ability to carry a film solely on his shoulders.

"I don't believe that rivals can't be friends," Aamir told IANS, adding: "I believe Salman and I are big stars and I want both of us to do better and better in our films."

Aamir, who reinvented himself with "Lagaan", has since stuck to one film in a year rule and all his releases - "Rang De Basanti", "Fanaa", "Ghajini", "3 Idiots", and critically acclaimed "Dhobi Ghat" - in the last eight years except for "The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey" and "Talaash", were not only rich in content but they also hit the jackpot at the box office.

Aamir emphasises on content while Salman is for potboilers.

Salman's stakes went up after the success of pan-India action drama "Dabangg", a film that appealed to both masses and classes. In the last three years, all his releases, including last year's "Dabangg 2" and "Ek Tha Tiger", crossed the Rs.100-crore mark, even though they were panned by the critics.

"Personally, I feel he is a bigger star than me. He has the ability to take a film on his shoulders. I see that in him. I don't think I have that. I don't have any hesitation in saying that, because that's the truth," said Aamir, praising his colleague.

"I am fond of him. I love him. I like people doing good work," he added.

It's not only Salman that Aamir appreciates. Any good film starring anyone makes the actor joyous.

"I am not that kind of person. I want to do good work, but it doesn't make me feel bad if someone else does well. I am also an audience and I love to see good work. Good work gives me joy; so I don't have that sort of competitive spirit in me and I am happy about that," he said.

His first and last release of the year, "Dhoom 3", a Yash Raj Films' banner offering, is coming out Dec 20 and Aamir is missing legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, who died last year.

"I share a great relation with the Yash Raj banner. I respect Yashji a lot. Today he is not with us and one of the biggest things I will miss is that Yashji will not be there to see 'Dhoom 3'," said Aamir who was directed by the late filmmaker in 1993 film "Parampara".

"Yashji was part of the planning process and he very keenly followed the progress on the script.

"I was telling (Yash Chopra's son) Aditya that one of the biggest regrets I will have is that Yashji is not here to see the film. We are going to miss him," said Aamir.

He however equally admires and has "very high regards for Aditya as a producer and director. He is very creative".

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, "Dhoom 3" also features Katrina Kaif as well as the duo Abhishek Bachchan-Uday Chopra who were in the first two parts as well.

It is often said that Bollywood is still star-struck but Aamir disagrees.

"I don't think Bollywood is star-obsessed, I think the people are, audiences are. And it's fine! Even I am star-obsessed. I am a big fan of Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan), Dilip Kumar, and Waheeda Rehman. I have been star stuck myself, nothing wrong in that," the 48-year-old told IANS.

Filmmaker Karan Johar says it is wrong to label his forthcoming production "Hasee Toh Phasee" as a romantic comedy. He believes this would trivialise the film's content.

"I think sometimes when we call a film a rom-com, we tend to slot it. I think 'Hasee Toh Phasee' is not a rom-com. It is actually a film about two characters and their journey and the way they find themselves within the world they actually meet in," the 41-year-old said here Friday at the film's first look launch.

"The film has a lot to do with the families, their journeys. By calling it a rom-com, we are trivialising the content of the film. 'Hasee Toh Phasee' is a coming of age story of two people in a very warm environment," he added.

The film's trailer gives a clear glimpse the rustic look of its actors, rugged settings equipped with power packed dialogues and action sequences. Priyanka, in her elegant yet raw avatar of a cabaret dancer, fits well in the love triangle which is reflected clearly through the trailer.

British singer-actress Sofia Hayat, who has filed an FIR against "Bigg Boss Saath-7" contestant Armaan Kohli for hitting her on the show, now plans to also sue Colors channel which airs the reality show.

At a press conference here, Sofia was asked if she thinks that the channel is wrong in not taking any action against Armaan despite having a "no violence" clause in the contract.

To that, Sofia said: "I didn't think practically that I should sue Colors also, I could see only Armaan Kohli. But yes, you are right, I will talk to my legal team also about this."

Sofia said after leaving the house, her only focus was to take action against Armaan and wants him to be taken out of the house. She filed a complaint at the Santa Cruz police station here Wednesday.

"My contract said 'no violence and no personal attacks'. I didn't think of this (suing the channel) before, but my next step will be this. Obviously, my number one priority is that Armaan is taken out of the house and he needs to be accounted for what he has done," she added.

Sofia was evicted from "Bigg Boss Saath-7" last week. During her stay on the show, an argument broke out between her and Armaan which ended with Armaan hitting Sofia with a mop, leaving her hurt.

This part was not aired on television and host Salman Khan also reprimanded Armaan for his action.

Armaan has been in the spotlight for his temper on more occasions than one and he has been seen picking up fights with other inmates as well.

"Bigg Boss" requires celebrity contestants to stay locked inside an isolated house with several cameras recording the inmates' actions every second.
