After ethnicwear, India offers stylish resortwear: Pria Kataaria Puri

0
0

The Indian fashion industry offers ethnicwear predominantly, but it is also fast becoming a hub for stylish resortwear, says designer Pria Kataaria Puri, who opened the India Resortwear Fashion Week (IRFW) 2013 with her colourful and glamorous collection Lust here Thursday.

"The market in India for resortwear has become huge. I have been part of many international shows and I can say that from international point of view that India in terms of fashion has only two choices - one is Indianwear and the other is resortwear," Puri told IANS on the sidelines of the first day of IRFW 2013.

"Indian fashion is known around the world for its resortwear and Indian designers are also known for their resortwear creations," she added.

Known for her sensuous and glamorous kaftans, Puri impressed the audience at IRFW 2013 with her Lust line. It includes her signature kaftans and swimwear but a unique thing about her designs this time was the use of belts, slits and antique gold lace which added a feminine touch to the garments.

Her silhouettes included saris, tunics, maxis, mini dresses, swimsuits, jumpsuits, crop tops with high waist pants and hippie pants. The designer's colour palette was a tasteful mix of vibrant and vivacious beach off white, neon green, bright fuschia, sunny yellow and turquoise.

Puri believes the collection serves a dual purpose - as beachwear and partywear too.

"The prints are vibrant and exotic with a more floral and Persian look to it. The collection is very glamorous, sensuous and sexy and apt for both beach and party look.

"All the fabrics are silk or crepe, which are usually my choice of fabric for last ten years. The prints are exclusively done and designed by me," said the designer.

The first show of IRFW 2013 here started well with people flocking in from various areas of Mumbai to be a part of the fashion gala. Actress Celina Jaitley added some Bollywood quotient as she was spotted sporting a knee-length dress.

Hottest hair trends for 2014

0
0

The new year calls for new things. Why not try a fresh hairstyle too?

Hairstylist Asgar Saboo predicts the hairstyles which will be in vogue and which ones will be out of fashion in 2014. The Britain-based stylist has suggestions for women as well as men.

For Women:

Windswept up-dos: This look is both casual and dishevelled, yet oozes subtle glamour and charm. For those who are a fan of up-dos, it is recommended letting plenty of loose locks fall around the face, when pinning hair up.

Short hair and cropped pixie cuts: Looking for a drastic change? Give yourself a cropped hair style. If you already have short hair, a great way to make cropped cut more exciting is to add layering. However, it is advised to always consider face shape and hair texture before making any dramatic change.

Braids: For those ladies who are thinking about spring and summer of next year, they can start experimenting with braids. Popular ones include the braid crown, in which a thick braid is wrapped around the crown of the head and the fishtail braid intertwining with neutral coloured ribbons, creating a fun yet sleek and subtle twist.

For Men:

Long hair: Keeping hair long will give you a chance to create numerous styles as per your wish. Static buzz cuts are no longer on trend - long hair, which can be tousled, swept to the side or slicked back in a "Great Gatsby" style is in!

Accessorise: Men can accessorise using a bandana. For those apprehensive, bandana is both masculine and casual and can work extremely well for men who are too lazy to style their hair.

Sharp fringes and varied lengths: For an edgier look, a rise in the short, sharp fringe, is often carried well and emphasised when the sides and crown of the head are cut short. Not only is this a refreshing change but it also works well for those who wish to hide a receding hairline or simply keep their foreheads covered.

Ironical joke in the land of Khajuraho: Onir on gay sex law

0
0

In what is seen as a huge blow to the homosexual community, the Supreme Court's decision makes anal sex a punishable offence. Onir, who is the only filmmaker in Bollywood to have come out of the closet, was disappointed by the apex court's judgment.

The apex court Wednesday set aside the 2009 Delhi High Court judgment decriminalising gay sex among consenting adults.

"This is truly disappointing. We don't know what our next move would be. Right now we're all numbed and dismayed. All of us had hoped to see the primitive law go," he said.

"The lower court had held up the individual's right to choose his partner. The gay community had hoped that the Supreme Court would also uphold this very fundamental right. This judgment is a huge blotch on the Indian record of upholding human rights.

"Once again we are shown to be enslaved by a British law brought into the country more than a century ago. Article 377 doesn't only criminalise gay sex, it also criminalises all sex that is not procreational.

"Now you tell me, isn't this an ironical joke in the land of Khajuraho and Kamasutra? And is the honourable Supreme Court trying to say? That unmarried girls and boys in our country don't have sex, or have it only to have babies?"

The maker of films like "My Brother Nikhil", says sex has never been only for "procreation".

"Be it during the era of kings and queens in the ancient times or now among college kids, sex cannot be for procreation alone. It is a stupid ancient law thrust on us by the Britishers.

"In 2009, the Delhi High Court took such a progressive step by the decriminalisation of gay sex. Now the honourable Supreme Court has not stood by our constitutional right. Our constitution guarantees every citizen the right to equality and protection against discrimination. We don't understand. They don't understand. Why should I be denied the right to love who I want?

"The courts should be more worried about the hatred being propagated in our society on the basis of religion, caste, community and sex.

"Look at Nepal. Our humble neighbour. They decriminalised gay sex 13 years ago when it was still a Hindu state. Nepal has also provided constitutional rights to the third sex. To me, that is real progress. And that's where we're lagging behind.

"I am trying to understand why the honourable Supreme Court has reversed all progress we seemed to make in the area of human rights. Sometimes I wonder if personal prejudices determine the lives of so many people. This is giving in to all kinds of right-wing fanaticism. I was hoping I'd be celebrating after the Supreme Court verdict. We don't know what we'll do now. I am sure our fight for sexual equality would only grow stronger," Onir said.

Aamir said that these films do attract considerable audience.

"There might not be large audience for these international films but I think there is significant audience and I hope with a chain like this even the audience will grow. I think it's because of these festivals we get to watch these wonderful films from all over," he said.

The 48-year old actor-filmmaker, who is awaiting the release of "Dhoom 3", congratulated everybody associated with the festival, which was also graced by southern superstar Kamal Haasan.

Aamir Khan, Kamal Haasan give memorable start to CIFF

The presence of Aamir Khan and Kamal Haasan, India's two finest film personalities, at the opening ceremony of the 11th Chennai International Film Festival (CIFF), turned the evening unforgettable for the audiences and organisers as well here Thursday.

Organised by the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) in association with the government of Tamil Nadu and several luminaries of Tamil film fraternity, the eight-day extravaganza (Dec 12-19) will screen 163 films from 58 countries.

The event began with the musical performances of playback singer Karthik and pianist Anil Srinivasan, who played some of the evergreen Tamil hits of Illayaraja to a packed hall here.

Karthik dedicated a couple of Hindi songs such as "Behka" and "Phela Nasha" to Aamir Khan, who attended the festival as the chief guest.

The musical show was followed by dance performances by TV anchor-dancer Swarnamalya and actress-dancer Shobana. Later, the performers of the evening received mementos from Kamal Haasan and Aamir Khan.

This is the fourth year in a row; CIFF has introduced a special competition section for Tamil films. Actress, writer and dubbing artist Rohini introduced the jury for this section which constitutes R. Sripriya, S. Ramakrishnan and R.V Udayakumar.

As many as 12 films such as "Soodhu Kavvum", "Aadhalal Kadhal Seiveer", "Haridas", "Paradesi" and "Kumki", among others, will battle it out for the prize money of Rs.6 lakh.

Actress Suhasini Mani Ratnam, the festival organiser, mediated a question-and-answer session with Kamal Haasan, who answered select questions from different members of Tamil cine world.

Answering one of the questions by legendary singer S.P Balasubrahmanyam on the need for qualified critics in censor board, Haasan said: "I strongly feel only qualified people should be there in the censor board. Industry should take responsibility of censorship."

"The people we have on our censor board are not qualified. They like cinema, they may be watching films regularly but that doesn't make them experts. All political parties want one of their members to be part of the censor board and that's wrong," Kamal added.

Aamir spoke about the need for a chain of theatres to screen international films in the country.

"I sometimes wish in India we had a chain of theatres which would throughout the year showcase films from different parts of the world. Even films from different parts of our country, films from different languages which we could all get to watch," he said.

The festival was also graced by international film personalities from other countries including Serbia, France, Iran, Ukraine, Poland, and Mexico.

This year, CIFF will have retrospectives of international filmmakers such as Goran Paskaljevic from Serbia (seven films), French filmmaker Claire Denis (five films) and Istvan Szabo from Hungary (three films).

The festival will also have a special section showcasing six films from contemporary Turkey apart from a country focus on Taiwan and Iran as well.

Japanese drama "Like Father, Like Son" opened the fest.

I'm a terrible businessman: Arshad Warsi

0
0

Moviemaking is as tough as running a business, which is tricky and taxing, says actor Arshad Warsi, who tried his hand at production with "Hum Tum Aur Ghost" and ended up burning his fingers.

"Sehar" fame director Kabeer Kaushik wielded the megaphone for "Hum Tum Aur Ghost", which saw Arshad as a guy who can see dead people, but the story failed to connect with either the audience or the critics.

The 45-year-old's experience has taught him that a "producer's job is a thankless job".

"It is one of the most difficult things to do and especially with someone like me - I am a terrible businessman. If I want to produce, I have to get somebody involved," Arshad told IANS.

Nowadays a producer has turned into a businessman and a movie is treated like a product, whose packaging has become essential.

"It's a tough job in today's time when movies are not just films, they have become products. So you are not a producer any more, you are a businessman who needs to sell his product. It's a whole different ball game now. The whole charm of making a movie has gone. Now it's very taxing to do it," he said.

Known for his comic timing in "Munnabhai" and "Golmaal" series, Arshad has put film production on the backburner.

Currently he is busy with his acting projects and he is looking forward to the release of "Dedh Ishqiya", a sequel to "Ishqiya", and "Mr. Joe B Carvalho". Both are coming out in January next year.

Audiences expect to see him in the same avatar as "Ishqiya" in director Abhishek Chaubey's "Dedh Ishqiya", which also features Madhuri Dixit in a pivotal role, he said.

"With 'Ishqiya' the audience expects to see Naseer saab and me fighting, they expect to see me going outrageous and nuts, they expect this sensuous, seductive scene in the film," he said.

A small town-based thriller, "Dedh Ishqiya" will see Arshad locking lips with co-star Huma Qureshi. Shooting the intimate sequence was not tough, he says.

"It was wonderful because I am usually nervous with such scenes, but Vidya (Vidya Balan, his 'Ishqiya' co-star) has made me a solid guy now. Now I can go though it happily," he said.

Interestingly, his wife Maria Goretti doesn't like him getting cosy with co-stars on the screen.

"Maria doesn't like it at all. There are no two ways about it and I can totally understand," said the actor, who has two children with Maria.

"I don't like it myself. There was no hint of me ever becoming an actor. It was by default that I became an actor. Poor thing, she didn't know what she was getting into," he added with a hint of humour.

"This is the most tricky profession. This is the most bizarre profession. I don't think I would marry an actor. Marrying somebody is one thing and marrying an actor is a different ball game. It's the most difficult thing for a man or a woman to marry an actor," he said.

Survival is not easy in filmdom, thanks to tough competition, but Arshad is not insecure.

"I am not competitive. A lot of people say that 'number game doesn't matter to me', but very few mean it.

"When I do a film, for me, every person in that film is important. I don't feel insecure at all. I want my film to do well. It becomes easy to work with a person like me. I improvise for everybody on the set," he said.

"Ishqiya" struck the right chord with the audience and Arshad is confident about the second part as well.

Shaking a leg with megastar Amitabh Bachchan once is not enough for actress Madhuri Dixit. She hopes to act with him someday and is keeping her fingers crossed for that.

"There were nearly three films which we did together, but they never happened. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Maybe, something will work out," Madhuri told IANS.

But at the moment, she is busy promoting "Dedh Ishqiya".

"It's crazy. It needs a lot of energy. Everybody is doing it and it seems to be the part of whole thing. I don't know how much benefit we'll get from promotions, but we are doing our best," said the star, who will be seen on the silver screen after seven years.

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, "Dedh Ishqiya" also features Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi and Huma Qureshi, among others.
