It is a ‘must have’ in your closet to dress up or dress down depending on your desired style or special event. Step out in stilettoes for the evening or go from brunch to cocktail teaming it with either a fitted tee or a satin blouse with pearls.

Taslima Nasreen slams TV serials for 'glorifying submissive women'

Foraying into television with the Bengali serial "Dusahobas", based on her story, exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen Wednesday slammed certain serials for "glorifying submissive women" and not portraying women in strong characters.

She felt the makers of such small screen ventures do not see women as figures of authority and emphasised "Dusahobas" will portray women in strong roles, fighting against oppression and demanding their rights.

"Some women-based serials portray women being submissive and glorify submissive women. I will not show the women in my serial like that...I will not glorify submissive women," she told the media here during a video conference to launch the serial.

"Women are so decked up (in some Hindi and Bengali serials)...the way they are shown to serve their husbands, in-laws as if they are meant to do this.

"I think people, who are misogynist who see women in bad light probably, make these serials. They do not show women as doctors, engineers or philosophers...in majority of Hindi and Bengali serials, women are relegated to the role of housewives," she said.

The celebrated feminist writer rued that audiences are deprived of thought provoking content on the telly.

"I do not agree that one has to make serials according to what's popular with the audience. Why can't you give them the choice of something better? You can influence them and give them something better, which is thought provoking," said the author of controversial book "Lajja".

"Dusahobas" will be screened Monday to Saturday at 10p.m. on Aakash Aath, beginning Dec 19.

"I hope it will make the audience, including housewives, think. TV shows women being oppressed, but I will tell the tales of brave women who take stands."

On Rajinikanth's 63rd b'day, dialogues popularised by him

$

Every time southern superstar Rajinikanth delivered a dialogue in his own trademark style, audiences have cheered and rooted for him in unison.

On his 63rd birthday Thursday, IANS lists some dialogues that were made famous by the actor in his over three-decade long career:

- "16 Vayathinile": Rajini as the film's antagonist introduced us to one of the popular catch-phrases of a long forgotten era - "Idhu eppadi irukku?" (How's this?). This line was so admired that even after three decades since the film's release, it still lingers in the minds of the actor's fans.

- "Murattu Kaalai": Rajnikanth as a villager in the film popularised the dialogue "Seeeviduven" (I'll chop off your head).

- "Baasha": As long as auto rickshaws ply in Tamil Nadu, the line "Naan oru thadava sonna, nooru thadava sonna maadiri" (Anything I say once is equivalent to saying it a hundred times) will be remembered. Rajinikanth as an auto driver delivered a knocker of a performance in this commercially successful outing.

- "Arunachalam": His dialogue "Andavan solran. Arunachalam seiran" (God commands, Arunachalam acts) from the film will be recalled as one of the shortest yet powerful line mouthed by the superstar in his career.

- "Padayappa": Another highly successful film that's remembered for the actor's line "En Vazhi, Thani Vazhi" (My way is my own) and actress Ramya Krishnan's brilliant portrayal of greedy Neelambari in the film.

- "Muthu": One of Rajinikanth's popular films that enjoyed a successful run even in Japan, the line from the film "Naan eppo varuven, epdi varuvennu yarkum theriyathu. Aana vara vendiya nerathile vandidven" (Nobody knows when or how I will come, but I will come when the time is right) has a strong recall value even today.

- "Sivaji": Contrary to the other films of the superstar, "Sivaji" had two popular dialogues - "Summa pere ketta athrudula" (Doesn't the earth shatter at the calling of my name?) and "Kanna, panni than kootama varum aana Singam single than varum" (My dear, pigs always come in an army but a lion always walks alone).

Actor Arshad Warsi is very fond of veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, with whom he has worked in "Dedh Ishqiya". He says one reason they gel well is both of them hate retakes.

"I'm very fond of Naseer saab. Why Naseer saab and me get along well with each other or why we are fond of each other is purely because I hate retakes. After my third take, I get fed up and start losing my patience, it becomes monotonous and I think so is the case with Naseer sir," Arshad told IANS.

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, "Dedh Ishqiya" also features Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi.

Arshad says if not acting, he just likes to sit and and do nothing.

"I am the laziest man in this world. I don't like to do anything. I do a lot of internet shopping. I like to do nothing, it's so beautiful to do nothing. Movies take up a lot of energy, it's difficult and pressurising," said the 45-year-old.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari Thursday criticized a Pakistani court's order to stop the screening of Indian content on TV channels, saying that films and serials are ideas that can't be stopped.

In a tweet, Tewari said: "Pakistani jingoists should know Films & TV serials are ideas & ideas can't be barred/ banned Pak govt must remove them from negative list ASAP."

The Lahore high court Justice Khalid Mahmood Khan Tuesday stayed the beaming of foreign content and ruled that Indian films and television serials were included in the "Negative List" under the current bilateral trade regime.

He also directed the federal government and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to submit a detailed reply in this regard.

The order was issued in response to a petition filed last month by TV talk show host Mubashir Lucman, a former film producer who had contended that Indian films and TV serials were being imported in violation of Pakistani regulations.

The court move came days after 10 entertainment television channels in Pakistan were slapped with Rs.10 million fine for airing excessive Indian and foreign content.
