Actor-turned-director Atul has directed two films so far - "Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha" and "Hello" and both had Salman, but none could entice the box office.

However, when Atul teamed up with the superstar for his production venture "Bodyguard", it reaped gold at the box office.

"We will be starting the promotions soon, but the first promotion starts with Salman's 'Jai Ho'," Atul, who has roped in his brother-in-law for a guest appearance in the film, told IANS.

According to a film critic, a story of aging and despair dappled by dashes of warmth and humour, "Club 60" is a treasure house of veteran actors at their luminous best lending to the film a kind of emphatic excellence.

Tripathi wrapped up the film in just Rs.5.5 crore and hopes the makers recover the cost.

"It is a very small budget film. We made the film on a budget of Rs.5.5 crore and we are hoping to recover the cost. The response has been encouraging, so I feel we will do well," he said.

Akash Chopra turns filmmaker

Producer-director Ramanand Sagar's grandson Akash Chopra, who made his acting debut with "Rabba Main Kya Karoon" under his father Amrit Chopra's direction, has now helmed a short film.

Just months after his disastrous debut, Akash has sprung a surprise by making a thought-provoking, haunting and topical short film entitled "The Interrogation Of Kartaar Singh".

Recreating an incident from the Khalistan movement of the Sikh community, Akash gives a riveting performance in the title role and manages to create a powerhouse aura in just 13 minutes.

The shy young actor said: "I guess that angry Kartaar Singh was there inside me. He couldn't come out in my debut film. This short film is a shock to those who don't know what happened during the anti-Sikh riots in 1984."

Since the film's content is volatile, Akash plans to send his short film to international film festivals.

"It's a little abstract in its cinematic appeal. Those who saw me in my debut film can't believe that's me as Kartaar Singh. This is definitely a new side to my personality, and it was challenge to bring Kartaar Singh out."

Talking about the project, he said: "It was a play that I did around two years ago. The honest intention at the outset was to simply give the play a cinematic treatment. But as we shot it, the film became very different from the play."

Delhi's music scene has evolved, become broader: Anoushka Shankar

0
0

Sitarist Anoushka Shankar, who grew up playing the stringed instrument with her father, the late Indian sitar legend Ravi Shankar, in the city and across the globe, believes the music scene in the Indian capital has come a long way.

Anoushka presented her musical skills on the stage at the Siri Fort auditorium here with her late father when she had just entered her teen phase. She says there have been changes for good since then.

"Sometimes, they are willing to pay for tickets and support, which is a change. That wasn't the case earlier. I think the music scene has become a bit broader and evolved here over the years which is wonderful," Anoushka, 32, who will perform here at the Talkatora Stadium Dec 14, told IANS in an interview.

"I've always enjoyed playing in Delhi. It's my second home," added the wife of popular British director Joe Wright. She considers London as her first home.

Another growth she has noticed is in the non-film music sector.

"In non-film genres, there's been a growth in these years. With all these festivals like NH7 Weekender, new faces are introduced to the music scene," she said.

The musician, on a Mumbai-Delhi tour put together by Bliss Entertainment, says every city has a good audience.

"It depends on venues. In the same city, I can play for classical audience, young electronica, hippy, jazz audience. Each will be different from each other. In Delhi you've got classical crowd, young rock lovers, electronica or Bollywood lovers. Every city has a good audience," said Anoushka.

According to her, India in general should have more growth of space and opportunity for different genres.

"If you compare with London and other cities, they have more venues. You've got opera houses, concert halls, jazz bars, and nightclubs. There is room for everybody.

"The audience knows where to go and support different kinds of music. We (Indians) have less auditoriums and less places; so people compete with each other a bit more," she said.

Film music dominates the India scenario. She feels that classical music shouldn't try to compete with popular genre.

"To make classical music compete with film music for the same airwaves doesn't make any sense. It will obviously not do well," she added.

However, she doesn't believe that there is any threat to classical music.

"People talk about how classical music is in danger. I don't think it's in danger. It has a strong audience, but it doesn't need to compete with something that's naturally going to be much bigger," said Anoushka, who is emotionally connected to her latest album "Traces Of You" much more than her previous six albums.

It took the Grammy nominee a year to put the album together and it is inspired by her personal experiences.

"The album was kind of a journey of life - there was a lot of love, pain, beauty, loss but also kind of hope. For instance, when my father passed away (Dec 11, 2012), I was also busy with my two-year old son. So, there was a lot of beauty, so the album had an amazing balance," said the musician.

Anoushka teamed up with half-sister and Grammy winner singer Norah Jones for the second time for "Traces Of You". The two had collaborated in 2007 for Anoushka's "Breathing Under Water" album.

She says working with Norah was her most meaningful experience.

"We worked for the second time, but it was a much more elaborate experience this time. She has sung three songs instead of one and there is personal content in the album; so it was sweet and lovely to work with her," said Anoushka.

Southern actress Trisha Krishnan, who has predominantly worked in Telugu and Tamil films, is making her Kannada movie debut. She will be seen in yet-untitled Kannada remake of Telugu blockbuster "Dookudu".

"We have zeroed in on Trisha for the leading lady's role. I have seen her work and since she hasn't worked in Kannada film industry so far, I was even more interested to cast her. She instantly agreed to be a part of the film when I approached her," the film's director Madesh told IANS.

Mahesh Babu-starrer "Dookudu" catapulted the image of Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Madesh hopes that the same happens for Trisha with the remake.

"I'm hoping that with this role, Trisha will find a strong foothold in Kannada industry as well. Our audiences are quite familiar with Trisha's work as most of her films from other languages have released here and have been appreciated," he said.

Trisha is paired with superstar Puneeth Rajkumar in the remake, which will also introduce composer S.S. Thaman, who composed the tunes for "Dookudu", to Kannada film industry.

Meanwhile, Trisha is awaiting the release of Tamil thriller Boologam and Telugu romantic drama "RUM".

Arshad Warsi extols Vidya Balan's bold act in "Ishqiya" and admits that he missed her presence in the sequel, but adds that "Dedh Ishqiya" demanded a different cast.

Bollywood's dancing diva Madhuri Dixit has replaced Vidya in the second part, which also stars Naseeruddin Shah, who was in the original, as well as Huma Qureshi.

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the hinterland drama is coming out Jan 10.

"Yes, I did miss her (Vidya) in the sequel. She had done a great job in 'Ishqiya', but the sequel demanded for a different star cast," Arshad told IANS.

"And I must say I had a great fun shooting with Madhuri and Huma in the film. But yes I did miss Vidya," he added.

"Ishqiya" was an unconventional film, which presented Vidya as a small town-based scheming seductress Krishna, who has Khalujan (Naseer) and Babban (Arshad) wrapped around her finger. Despite being unconventional and being told in a rural setup, the film scored high at the box office and even wowed the critics.

However, Arshad who had locked lips Vidya in part one praises Huma too.

He said: "When I was shooting with Huma, I realised her screen presence is wonderful. She looks gorgeous on screen...I don't mean to say that she doesn't look nice off-screen, but she looks damn beautiful on screen."

Apex court's anti-gay verdict misjudgement, say celebs

0
0

Celebrities like Madhur Bhandarkar, Kunal Kohli and Shruti Haasan have strongly disapproved of the Supreme Court's verdict that holds same-gender consensual sex as an offence. The verdict, they feel, has pushed people to the dinosaur era.

The Supreme Court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice S.J. Mukhopadhayay, Wednesday setting aside the Delhi High Court verdict of 2009, said there was no constitutional room for change in the Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Section 377 of the IPC holds that same-gender sexual relationship is against the order of the nature and is an offence. The apex court upheld the constitutional validity of the section.

The verdict has left many stars unhappy. Here's what they had to say:

Madhur Bhandarkar: Just when we thought we are looking into the future, comes a judgment that treats us like we are in the stone age. The disappointment is justified.

Chetan Bhagat: What?! Consensual gay sex ruled illegal in 2014? Shows you how badly India needs new young leaders with a modern outlook.

Shruti Haasan: 11.12.13 a day that reminds us how blatant regressing and oppressing someone has become - plan b move bedroom to another planet and time.

Sudhir Mishra: The decision declaring gay consensual sex illegal betrays a primitive Victorian mind. It is certainly not Indian.

Kunal Kohli: On 11-12-13 Supreme Court goes back to the medieval ages with Section 377.

Anupam Kher: We obviously don't believe in equal rights even in the times when we send Mangalayan to Mars.

Kalki Koechlin: Supreme Court's job is to uphold the right and freedom of every individual, not to decide what is culturally acceptable or not. In this case they failed.

Shruti Seth: So while the world is trying to legalise gay marriage, here's what we're doing as a nation. Such a disgrace!

Riteish Deshmukh: Supreme Mis-judgement.

Nikhil Advani: Welcome to the medieval ages! It was only a matter of time.

Neha Dhupia: How can love be illegal?

Rahul Bose: So much for those believing the judiciary is 'the last bastion of common sense' in this country.

Vinay Pathak: Supreme Court - Straight or scared!

Milap Zaveri: Nothing supreme about the court's decision. Shocked and disappointed at the anti-gay verdict.

Shirish Kunder: Personally, I've no problem with same-sex relationships, as long as it's not compulsory.

Vir Das: Today is 11.12.13. Unless you work in our Supreme Court, in which case it's the year 1826.

Sandhya Mridul: The courts are unfortunately only following the law of the land, which are as old as the dinosaurs. Blame the legislature more than Supreme Court!

Hansal Mehta: Does India not have a single gay judge? Or does being gay mean that you can only be unfairly judged?

Siddharth: India is a bigot nation. I pray that every person who tries to deny another person their rights gets IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome). Bigots beware.

Richa Chadda: The Supreme Court criminalises love, again. Sad day.

Nachiket Barve: The problems of this world are because of what happens 'without consent' rather than what happens between 'consenting adults'! wake up!

Celina Jaitly: I cannot believe Supreme Court's decision. I have been in shock since it came. Such a contradiction of democracy.
