More singers, few legends due to technology: Sonu Nigam

$

0

Technological innovations come with their pros and cons, and the Indian music industry is witnessing it all, says popular singer Sonu Nigam, who believes more singers are cropping up thanks to technology, but very few "music legends" remain.

"Earlier, singers like Lataji (Lata Mangeshkar) and Ashaji (Asha Bhosle) used to sing their songs in one take. The whole song used to be recorded from start to finish, and even if one instrument went awry, they used to start recording from the start."

"But now anyone can sing lines of the song in their voice, and you can correct each note to tune through the computer. So, anyone whose texture of voice is good, is now getting a chance to become a singer," Sonu said at the India Today Group's conclave Agenda Aaj Tak here Tuesday.

Whether this is right or wrong is not something that Sonu, a successful playback singer as well as live performer, wants to comment on.

"I am no one to take a stand. Every new technology has its plus and minus points. But all I can say is that when people like Suresh Wadkar and Hariharan or Talat Aziz and Pankaj Udhas come anywhere, we still stand in respect for them because they are legendary. Legends are real singers, and they are only few."

"What technology does is make 'doodh ka doodh and paani ka paani' (separating milk from water) about who can sing and who can't, but what it is also doing is giving the industry many singers," he added.

My unsuccessful films are my 'biggest learnings': Aamir Khan

In a career of almost 25 years, Aamir Khan has seen successes and flops. But it is his failures that he credits for his life's "biggest learnings", saying that it doesn't matter to him if his films make Rs.100 crore or more but he gets "upset" if people lose money from a film which rides on his name.

"There are a lot of films I did that didn't make me happy, but it is also true that you don't always get success despite all efforts. When I look back and see these films, I feel that I've learnt a lot from my unsuccessful films. Those are my biggest learnings," Aamir said here.

"My failures have taught me as much as my successful films, and they are equally special to me," the 48-year-old said at the India Today Group's Agenda Aaj Tak Conclave here Wednesday.

The ace actor-filmmaker opened up about his efforts to juggle between films and a TV show, his "guilt" over not being able to spent time with his family, the Khan rivalry in Bollywood and more.

Aamir, who dabbles in films of different kinds, says he undergoes just one pressure when he signs a project - and it has nothing to do with numbers.

"I feel that whoever buys a ticket to my film, doesn't go back feeling that it was a waste. The audience should feel entertained. That's all. I don't get into numbers. It has to touch hearts what money it makes, that doesn't matter to me," Aamir said and explained how he remembers his favourite movies "Pyaasa" and "Mughal-e-Azam" for their craft and not for how much money they made.

But does it upset him when his films don't do commercially well?

"I don't like it if anyone suffers loss," he said.

"I feel upset as I feel people should get their money back from a film, and make at least 10 to 15 percent profit at least. Whether they make Rs. 200 crore or Rs. 400 crore, I am not interested in it. But I like my films to be commercially viable," he said.

On the Bollywood front, Aamir currently awaits the release of "Dhoom: 3", which stars him as a villain. The much-awaited film, the third in the popular franchise of Yash Raj Films, releases Dec 20.

Having fond memories of visiting Peshawar as a teenager with his father, Shah Rukh Khan harbours a hope to take his three children to visit his family's hometown, and hopes ties between India and Pakistan become "friendlier" and "family-like".

The Hindi film superstar spoke fondly of Peshawar when Pakistan's former foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar asked him about visiting her country, at India Today Group's Agenda Aaj Tak Conclave here Wednesday.

"I'd love to! My family is from Peshawar and few of them still live there. I would love to come to Peshawar and bring my children over because my father took me when I was 15 or 16. I still have some of the greatest memories of the time I spent with my father in Peshawar, Karachi and Lahore. I want to take my kids there," said Shah Rukh.

The 47-year-old was born in Delhi, but his late father, Taj Mohammad Khan, came from Peshawar. He was a freedom fighter.

Shah Rukh, who is married to Punjabi girl Gauri, has three children - Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. AbRam is their baby through surrogacy.

Shah Rukh hopes that the two countries forget their differences and join forces to have "the greatest of things possible for each other".

"I hope with whatever issues and stresses we have... I hope we become friends, we become friendlier, we become like a family and one together," he said, adding how he learnt the true essence "mehmaan-nawaazi" during his last visit to Pakistan.

The actor believes the people of both nations harbour no ill-will for each other.

"When I travel abroad, I notice it even more, because sitting in your nation you can't make out. But when I go to London, Dubai or US, you don't even get to know who is from where - there's no cultural difference. I think people should forget (the past) and continue to be what we used to be," he added.

AbRam now healthy, has dimples: SRK

AbRam, Shah Rukh Khan’s third child, who was born through surrogacy and prematurely by several months, is now healthy, says the superstar. In fact, he has dimples like his father too!

Shah Rukh had confirmed the arrival of AbRam in July. Since it was a premature birth, the baby had to battle health issues, but all seems well now.

“AbRam is very handsome mashallah, healthy now, and spreads a lot of happiness. He has dimples also, so yes, it is nice to have people who have dimples,” said the 47-year-old, whose dimples add charm to his million dollar smile.

He spoke at India Today Group’s Agenda Aaj Tak conclave Wednesday.

A doting father, Shah Rukh also has a son named Aryan and a daughter named Suhana. Both are teenagers.

What drove Shah Rukh and Gauri’s decision to have a child after so many years?

“My elder son is 16, and my daughter is 13. But since the past four to five years, they started moving out more, went to school. Earlier they used to stick to us like monkeys like children are used to doing, and I spent lot of time with them. We are like a nuclear family and we like it like that.

“But in the past few years the environment was such that the children used to be in their rooms with their friends. We didn’t even sometimes realise if they were at home or not. So we started missing the fact that we could spend time with the children. Now my son has gone to London to study and Inshallah, my daughter would also like to go.

“We are free-thinking parents and let them do what they want. But we started missing the presence of children,” he admitted candidly.

SRK said, the baby keeps Gauri busy and brings a lot of happiness in their lives.

Happy time to be in films: Farooque Sheikh

Veteran actor Farooque Sheikh praises changes in the film industry and the theatre world. He says this is a happy time to be in the movie business and adds that one can lead a respectable life by being a full time theatre artist.

"As a theatre person, I feel it's a labour of love. Things have changed and the scenario is not the same. One can be a full time theatre person and still have a respectable life. I think the positive change is finally coming," said the 65-year-old outstanding performer.

The actor, who has been in showbiz for more than 30 years and featured in films like "Noorie", "Saath Saath", "Umrao Jaan", "Bazaar", "Katha" and "Biwi Ho To Aisi", says filmdom is enjoying its best phase.

"As an actor I feel it's an interesting phase as about 400 films are being made in a year and the actors are flooded with numerous options. I think this is the happy time to be in the film industry and this excites me the most," he said.

When asked what motivates him to sign on the dotted line, Farooque replied:
"For me, even today if anything excites me to be part of a film, it's the script."

He however seems unimpressed with the quality of writing in movies.
"One thing which is very disturbing is the writing part. Writing can be given a second look and there is room for improvement on that," said Farooque.

Why is the "Chashme Buddoor" star not as active as Amitabh Bachchan or Rishi Kapoor in front of the camera?

"I adore Bachchan and Rishi Kappor; they are outstanding actors. In fact, they are stars. You see them more often because more producers want them to be part of their projects. I don't enjoy working every day," he explained.

"I am kind of a person who doesn't like to work every day. I am happy in my own space and I should be thankful that I have the privilege to sit at home and I want to make the best of it," he said, adding: "I think I am too boring to be controversial."

After a gap, he will be seen in "Club 60", paired with Sarika for the first time.

"I regret that I didn't work with her before. We never had that opportunity. She is one of the finest actors we have today. There are not too many lines for Sarika in the film, but she has played her part so well that it's commendable," said the actor who has worked with the likes of Deepti Naval and Rekha.

Directed by Sanjay Tripathy, "Club 60" also features Satish Shah, Tinnu Anand and Raguveer Yadav. It is slated for a Friday release.

The actor says they had a blast shooting for the film.

"Unfortunately, we all don't have enough time to catch up with each other, but this film was fun. We spent a lot of time on the sets, we met every day and it was so much fun. We shot in Mumbai and outside Mumbai as well," he said.

'A Little Poland in India' maker honoured in Warsaw

$

Indian filmmaker Anu Radha was felicitated in this Polish capital for "A Little Poland in India", a heart-warming documentary about a historical bond between India and Poland, getting a standing ovation from the audience when it was premiered and receiving rave reviews from critics.

"It is one of the toughest films of my life, but I thoroughly enjoyed making it. To deal with a historical matter is a very challenging job.The beauty is that I could use five survivors of that period and they turned out to be real heroes of the film. They are in their 80s and they still have vivid memories. One person could travel to the location in Gujarat where he had spent four years as a child," Anu Radha told IANS of the two-year project, a joint venture between Doordashan and National Polish Television (TVP).

The 52-minute film is based on the true story of what happened to 1,000 Polish children who were given shelter by Jamsaheb Digvijaysinhji, the then maharaja of Jamnagar in Gujarat. They had to leave their motherland during World War II. They escaped via Uzbekistan and Iran and finally landed in Gujarat.

From 1942 to 1946, these children, mostly orphans were looked after by the maharaja, who became their adopted father. They were given proper education and proper Catholic religious training at Balachadi, near Jamnagar, so that they would not forget their Polish roots.

Since 1947, these children are known as the "Children of Jamnagar" and a book was written a few years ago describing their life and experiences.

To express their gratitude, the Warsaw city authorities earlier this year named a Maharaja Square very close to a school named after the maharaja. Apart from Polish children, this school now also has orphans from Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Tibet and Chechyna as also some African countries. It is regarded as a true tribute to Jamsaheb's memory.

"The legacy of kindness experienced by Polish children in India is still in the hearts of the Polish nation. This moving documentary reminds us what we owe to India," observed Janusz Krzyzowski, president of the India-Polish Cultural Committee.

"Anu Radha's film will open new frontiers of understanding between the two countries. For a very long time we were dreaming of collaborating for the film as Poland is known for its art and classical movies. Directors like Andrezej Wajda, Krzystof Zanussi and Roman Polynski have impressed Indian film directors in the past. It is high time we collaborated in commercial movies as Poland has become an important destination for Bollywood movies," said Indian ambassador to Poland Monika Kapil Mohta.

In the film, five survivors share their experience of how they got a new life and second homeland in India.

"Our relationship with India stretched back to World War II when India opened her heart to the Polish refugee children and offered them both home and human warmth. We shall never forget the generosity of spirit," Piotr Ktodkowski, Poland's Ambassador to India, said at a screening in New Delhi last month.

It's like being in a horror movie: Javed Akhtar on back pain

$

Last month lyricist Javed Akhtar woke up to the most terrifying experience of his life - simply put, he just couldn't move. It was due to back pain and he is now on the road to recovery.

It happened on Nov 29 here.

Recalling the horror of having lost the power of his limbs Javed, now on the way to recovery at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre here, said: "On that fateful morning I got up as usual."

"I had been suffering from a nagging back pain in my lower back for some time, which I had been ignoring. You know how it is. We tend to play down our body's warning signals until it is too late. Suddenly, I realised how fragile the human body is when I simply lost the power to move."

Contrary to reports the inertia attack did not happen in the bathroom.

"I came out of the loo, went to the bedroom and sat on the bed. It was then that it happened. I couldn't move! I was transfixed on the spot. I couldn't get up from bed or lie down. I had the most acute pain in my lower back. The pain was so unbearable that I shrieked out in agony," he said.

He had locked the bedroom door from inside.

"So no one could come to me to help. I sat there screaming in pain. Finally, my man-Friday had to break down my bedroom door to reach me," said the lyricist known for penning hits such as "Sandese aate hain, ki ghar kab aaoge" and "Ek ladki ko dekhaa to aisa laga".

"I had to be rushed to the spinal hospital where I am now 80 percent recovered. I can move, go to the loo, talk to friends, read and write without pain," he added.

But the experience has put the fear of god and mortality in the poet.

"We tend to take out body for granted. Because of the pain in my lower back for some time I had stopped doing all exercise. Now I intend to follow a strict regime."

His wife and actress Shabana Azmi, who is by his side, calls it "a traumatic time for both of us".

"Luckily Jadoo (Javed Akhtar) is now recovering fast. But anything could've happened. I felt so helpless because I could do nothing to relieve his pain. I was very tense. He was in such pain that he couldn't bear it. And to see him crying in pain was unacceptable to me. He couldn't even move and had to be taken out on a stretcher to the ambulance."

Shabana is all praise for the doctors at the hospital and said that the two doctors, who are looking after her husband "are absolutely world-class".

"We get the best medical treatment in India," she added.

Dimple Kapadia remembers her late husband Rajesh Khanna, best known as the first superstar of the Hindi film industry, as a great star and says there's no one like him.

Rajesh Khanna, also known as Kaka, starred in hit films like "Aradhana" and "Kati Patang". He died in 2012, aged 69, after battling health issues.

Recalling the last days of Rajesh Khanna, Dimple said: "I want to say something - he (Rajesh Khanna) was not feeling too well and he had to come to the balcony and wave to the press.

"So I gave him a shawl and my sunglasses and I said, 'Kakaji aap na thoda profile dijiyega, straight mat dijiyega, profile looks better'.

"He looked at me and said, 'Aacha ab tum mujhe sikhaogi (Now you will teach me). And I was like - no, no sorry, sorry!"

"What a star, what a star he was! There is no one like him," added the actress who is gearing up for the release of her new movie "What The Fish", coming out Dec 13.

She may have worked in over 60 films, but the 56-year-old actress says even now every shot is like a matter of life and death for her.

"I never enjoy working. I am too honest, so I have problems with myself all the time. So I am always cribbing and nervous. Sometimes I am fully prepared and suddenly I get blank - I forget my lines. Every shot is a matter of life and death for me, so I don't enjoy that process," said the "Bobby" actress.

Interestingly, Dimple is central to the plot of "What The Fish", a fun filled mystery drama.

Salman Khan hit-and-run case for fresh trial

$

In relief of sorts for Bollywood actor Salman Khan, a Mumbai court Thursday ordered a retrial of his high-profile hit-and-run case of 2002, with all evidence and witnesses to be re-examined, officials said.

Sessions Court Judge D.W. Deshpande, while accepting Khan's plea for a retrial after he was charged under Section 304(2) of the Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), has ordered that the trial start Dec 23. The maximum punishment under this section is 10 years in prison.

"At this stage, I cannot say how long the fresh trial will take. It will depend on various aspects like the number of witnesses the prosecution decides to examine. I hope it does not take too long," Khan's lawyer, Shrikant Shivade, told IANS.

Khan, 47, had earlier pleaded that the evidence produced before a magistrate's court should be discarded since he would face a more serious charge, but the prosecution had opposed the fresh trial, terming it a delaying tactic.

Shivade argued that Khan had not been given an opportunity to cross-examine the witnesses on the enhanced charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder pinned by the sessions court June 24.

The actor was previously charged and tried by a Bandra magistrate's court under Section 304(A) (rash and negligent driving), which attracts a light sentence of two years in jail.

However, nearly 10 years later, the magistrate held that a case under 304(2) had been made out against Khan and sent the case to a sessions court for trial.

Besides Section 304(2), Khan also faces charges of causing death by negligence, causing hurt by an act, causing grievous hurt and damage or mischief to property and also charges under the Motor Vehicles Act and the Bombay Prohibition Act.

On Sep 28, 2002, an allegedly inebriated Khan, while driving his Toyota Land Cruiser SUV, ran over some pavement dwellers near a bakery in Bandra (West). While one person was killed, four others were injured in the incident.

The trial started September 2005. Nearly four years after the incident, on Oct 6, 2006, the magistrate's court framed 10 charges against the actor.

Almost 10 years later, the magistrate's court ruled that a case was made out against the actor under Section 304(2) and transferred the case to the sessions court. This was challenged by Khan.

The sessions court June 24 upheld the magistrate court's order and ordered a fresh trial in the case, and fixed July 19 for starting the retrial.

Now, the fresh trial is set to start Dec 23, four days before Khan turns 48.

At the Agenda Aaj Tak Conclave here Thursday, Bollywood's eligible bachelorette was asked why she has never stood up and spoken out against dating rumours.

"It's not because I am being politically correct. It's just that I'm a private person," said the 31-year-old.

"I believe that I am putting 90 percent of myself and my family life out in front of the public, I have every right to keep 10 percent of it for myself," she added.

Priyanka, who is also an active member of online social networking platforms, says women always know "how much you want to tell".

"I am a girl and I have the right to keep my personal life personal," said the star of films like "Dostana" and "Barfi!".

A session with Priyanka will be incomplete without a question of her marriage plans, and the story was similar at the conclave.

She said: "When somebody who is worth asking me asks me about marriage, then I will see."

The actress, who is also making a name for herself as a singer on the international music scene, is sure that she wants two key things in her prospective partner - "he should be my best friend and I should have 'aankhon ki sharam (a degree of respect)' in front of him".
