Amitabh Bachchan delivers insightful lecture in capital

Indian cinematic icon Amitabh Bachchan Friday took to the Penguin Annual Lecture 2013 podium, much to the joy of an eclectic audience of almost a thousand, and left them more star-struck as he spoke about empowering the country's women, Indian cinema, poetry and more.

The 71-year-old, looking handsome in a black formal suit, reached the venue, the Thyagaraj Stadium here at the scheduled time. The sound of the audience's applause took over the netball court at the facility and Big B, as humble as he is, responded by flashing a smile and folding his hands to gesture a "Namaste".

He touched upon his memories of his father, the late legendary poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, whose birth anniversary happened to be just "two days ago" on Nov 27.

"A decade without him," sighed Amitabh as he shared some of his conversations with his father during the lecture, the seventh edition of the annual event organised by Penguin Books India.

Past lectures were delivered by eminent personalities like writer-journalist Thomas Friedman, diplomat-writer Chris Patten, economist Amartya Sen, historian Ramachandra Guha, the Dalai Lama and former Indian president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Big B tried to convey a connect for his presence at the event by saying the invitation for him to address the gathering has to do with the growth that the Indian cinema has witnessed over the years.

"Cinema was looked down as something infra dig 50 to 60 years ago," he said, and pointed out Penguin Books India's decision of inviting a film actor like him to deliver a lecture that he had earlier described as a "prestigious and of novel importance".

Amitabh, also a UN ambassador for the girl child, spoke of female foeticide and infanticide, of gender bias and of the country's dismal female literacy levels.

"Everyone can watch a Hindi film, but they cannot read a book," he rued as he presented hard facts about state-wise literacy rates.

"I'll try again to build a girl's school," Big B said as he appealed to the audience that "true equality will only emerge when the whole culture embraces the importance of girl child education".

He spoke of trafficking, prostitution, acid attacks, dowry deaths, bride burning and more, questioning: "Whose blood is this?"

He ended his lecture by reciting lines of his father's poem "Khoon ki chhaap" (Imprints of blood"). An applause followed again.

Big B also sat down for a tete-a-tete with TV host Rajdeep Sardesai and spoke about a range of things. He also patiently answered some questions from the audience, for whom the icing on the cake was his recital of his father's most widely known work, "Madhushala".

For Amitabh, the experience of the event was as exciting as it was for his fans.

"What an enlightened audience, and what an honour to be with them," he posted on Twitter after the lecture.

Kareena reinvented in 'Bombay Samurai'

Actress Kareena Kapoor's career seems to be heading to an exciting new level with Dev Benegal's film "Bombay Samurai".

Post-marriage, she seemed to flounder in her choices with her half-hearted crusader's role in Prakash Jha's "Satyagraha" and the totally inane social activist's role in "Gori Tere Pyaar Mein". With "Bombay Samurai", Kareena finally seems to have got her post-marriage formula right.

According to sources, the film is "a crazy zany rollicking roller coaster ride with amazing twists and turns. There are seven to eight pivotal characters. But Kareena and Farhan (Akhtar) preside over the show".

"They play a couple like no other seen before in our films. They are wacky and unpredictable. The two actors will have a ball playing their outgoing zestful characters," the source added.

Both Kareena and Farhan were keen to work with one another.

Says Farhan: "I've seen Kareena's work. She is consistently excellent. I was keen to work with her. Dev's film gives us a chance to try something different."

Kareena expressed the highest admiration for Farhan: "I admire Farhan for being multi-talented. Which other director has done so well as an actor? Farhan took my breath away in 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'. I am really looking forward to working with him."

The Farhan-Kareena film starts after Kareena's annual holiday in Switzerland in December.

Incidentally, she goes on this annual Christmas-New Year holiday in Switzerland without fail every year with husband Saif Ali Khan.

'Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham' offers only minutes of laughter

0
0

Film: "Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham"; Cast: Jai, Sathyan, VTV Ganesh, Niveda Thomas, Subbu Panchu, Rajkumar, Devadarshini, Manobala and Venkat Prabhu; Director: Chandru; Rating: **

In the 21st century Kailash, lord Ganesha is busy running on the treadmill while his brother Karthikeya is hooked to Temple Run on his iPad. Goddess Parvati and lord Shiva await the arrival of Vedic sage Narada, who now carries a guitar instead of a tanpura because he can't bear its weight. With a creative and humorous initial set up, you expect "Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham" to be a laugh riot but all that it manages to deliver is a few minutes of laughter.

Four friends head for a bachelor's party to Bangkok, two weeks before the wedding of the film's protagonist. There, after a night of debauchery, they wake up on an island surrounded by water. As they try and figure out a way to leave the island, its revealed to the viewers that lord Shiva is pulling the strings in this game which was designed to teach the friends the importance of life as they are reckless.

The problem with "Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham" is that it doesn't capitalise on the premise it is built on. Instead, it steers away to produce yet another cheesy entertainer. I thought the first fifteen minutes of the film were funny, made audiences laugh and guaranteed entertainment, but what followed after that was downright awful and proof of bad writing.

En route to the Bangkok trip, one of the characters in the film says that it all looks like a scene from "The Hangover". He is silenced by his friend who in defence of the film asks him not to evoke such ideas in the first place because their film is not inspired by the Hollywood flick. Likewise, in another scene when on the island, he refers to a scene from Tom Hank's "Castaway". If the intention of the makers was to stop the audience from drawing comparisons with Hollywood films, they only succeeded in encouraging the audience to do exactly the opposite.

In another scene, Narad asks lord Shiva what he plans on doing next with the four characters on the island as he starts to feel that the film is not picking up momentum and audiences are likely to get bored. In a way, the makers are to be blamed for constantly reminding us of the film's shortcomings instead of concentrating on entertaining viewers.

The humour is stale and has been used for years now while the music and songs are not worth discussing. The film meanders at a snail's pace and becomes extremely tedious in the second half. It's not the characters who get lost on the island, but director-writer Chandru who doesn't have a clue about how to complete the film. He throws in what are supposedly a few funny incidents that hardly evoke any laughter, forget entertainment.

This is not even a film you can force yourself to watch because you have paid money. It's god's way of punishing us for all the bad we have done in our lives.

Tamil actor Ajith Kumar, who hasn't romanced on screen or even danced to a duet in his last three films, will put on his dancing shoes and groove to a folk as well as romantic number with co-star Tamannah Bhatia in his upcoming Tamil action drama "Veeram".

"He will be seen in a mass-appealing avatar in 'Veeram'. We are bringing forth a side of the actor that his fans haven't seen in a long time. He will dance to romantic numbers with Tamannah, romance her on screen and also match steps to a fast-paced folk number," the film's director Siva, told IANS.

Ajith's last three releases were action flicks "Mankatha", "Billa 2" and "Arrambam". He played a suave urban character in all these films.

"Unlike his last few films, Ajith will be completely seen as a dhoti-clad character and boast a rural look throughout the film," he added.

"Veeram" slated to release Jan 10, 2014, also features Avinash, Vidharth, Suhail Chandhok, Pradeep Rawat, Vidyullekha Raman and Manochitra in important roles.
